5 out of 5 stars Terrific and a real blast!!!! Oh & Simon said I could review them!!!.......2006-04-20

Along with The Ohio Express came The 1910 Fruitgum Company and gee am I glad they did.Another Bubble Gum group with a vast list of very popular and catchy songs. The cd is very inexpensive and well worth the money. The songs are all the originals but remastered.Great sound quality and the cd consists of 16 songs which are.....1) Simon Say 2)May I take a Giant Step 3)Please me, Tease me 4)Sweet Lovin' 5) Play Our Sog Mr.Music Man 6)1,2,3 Red Light 7)Candy 8)Liza 9) Indian Giver 10) Dee-Licious 11) 1910 Cotton Cany Castle 12)Bubble Gum World 13) Special Delivery 14) Goody Goody Gumdrops 15) The Train 16) Reflections from the Looking Glass.A very catchy and upbeat compilation of songs that make you smile and the memories can be over powering if you listened to 1910 FGC growing up as I did.I splendid collection of pop and fun songs with that Bubble Gum sound.Try it you'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars Fond Childhood Memories.......2004-12-30

when i was thirteen i wore out 3 copies of Indian Giver. i bought the others in the 3 for a dollar bin. these included Simon Says, 1-2-3 Redlight, Goody Goody Gumdrops, Special Delivery, and May I Take A Giant Step. the sound is the best ever and album tracks like The 1910 Cotton Candy Castle, and b-side Reflections Of The Looking Glass are welcome additions. unfortunatly, i wish they included the single versions of Simon Says, Goody Goody Gumdrops and Special Delivery. they are all vastly different. Simon Says is available through the verese bubblegum series. still, you can't go wrong with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Sixties bubblegum at it's best.......2002-09-15

Bubblegum pop was never meant to be anything more than lightweight, fun music. Despite the critics, people bought the music because the songs were very catchy and well performed.

Perhaps the best of the bubblegum groups was the 1910 fruitgum co, who's biggest hit was Simon says - it was #4 in America and #2 in Britain. I remember being a little boy in the fifties playing the game Simon says, and I remember being a teenager hearing the song Simon says played at teenage parties and everybody dancing to it.

There were several other hits in America, but not in Britain where they remain a one-hit wonder. All their American hits are here, the two biggest apart from Simon says being 1 2 3 red light and Indian giver, both of which peaked at #5. Two others (Goody goody gumdrops and Special delivery) just made the top forty, and they had two other minor hits, these being May I take a giant step into your heart and The train. The rest of this collection is made up of the best album tracks and B-sides.

Music like this is not meant to be taken seriously, but it's very catchy and great fun.

5 out of 5 stars Essential bubblegum classics.......2001-12-11

Admit it - you dug the 1910 Fruitgum Company in the fifth grade and you want to hear those great, naughty-but-silly double-entendre bubblegum hits again. Delight, then, in this beautifully-produced anthology. Excellent remastering, excellent liner notes, all the tracks you remember and then some. I'm not saying this is "Abbey Road" or something, but it's certainly essential in its own way, and if your friends and family make derogatory comments, tell them how the Talking Heads used to faithfully cover "1-2-3 Red Light" in concert! Recommended also is the Ohio Express collection and, to a lesser extent, the Lemon Pipers.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bubblegum lasts forever!.......2001-08-10

Yes,yes, yes! The 1910 F.C. had some of the catchiest, fun pop music EVER!Sure,it's debatable who played/sang on what, but who cares? The great songs are what matters and this is a top-notch collection of "their" best stuff!Rock on,Bob PS:INDIAN GIVER is one of the best songs of all time!

3 out of 5 stars Is this the same Simon Says???.......2006-10-24

I'm strongly disappointed. I bought this album expecting the music of Simon Says but it sounds like I got a watered down version of FenixTx. They went from a heavy metal band to a weak punk. I applaud bands for trying new things, but if Simon Says ever reads this...GO BACK TO "SHUT YOUR BREATH"!!!

2 out of 5 stars middle of the road.......2003-01-26

i must not be listening to the same record as some other reviewers. i see four and five stars but the record i listen to is not that good. it is good heavy rock with good melody but held down by weak production. there are many styles such as emo and metal being the obvious choices but there is a little punk and some other stuff. i like the voice which is beautiful and intense but the music is weak. there are some songs that just rock but for the most part this cd is weak. their second album holds better production and the song writing is more consistant with less weaker material than this album but this band is far from the saviors of rock or the great band that other reviewers see fit to call them but that is just my take.

5 out of 5 stars MELODIC MELODY METAL.......2002-12-15

Actually, i dunno if id even go as far as sayin this cd was metal. Its more like a fusion of punk, rock, "emo", and a little bit of metal. Its soooo tight, its great to listen to when you want some up-beat, melodic music to sing along to. Unfortunely, this band changed its name to "key to Arson" and now play a sorta plain metal. But this cd will never cease being played, at least not in my house!!!! I LUV this cd!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best album i've ever bought in my entire existance!!!.......2002-07-12

This album inspired me more than anything in the world to write music. They have the coolest sound in the world!!!! It's almost startling that they aren't HUGE! i can't even express my emotion for this album. if you like sweet music than definatly look into this album. now their newer album isn't as great. unless you like the F word, and lots of screaming. but these guys aren't simon says anymore. they dropped their record co. and got a new drummer along with a new name..... greatest band ever, they go back to the more mellow sound.

4 out of 5 stars Don't forget Shut Your Breath.......2002-03-11

These guys are so talented it's unbelieveable. It's also unbelieveable how most of the people I know have never heard of this band, which is sad because they are missing out on some great music. My personal favs on this cd are "Slider" and "Life Jacket." I gave this cd 4 stars because, while I love this band to death, most of the songs kinda sound the same. Shut Your Breath is much better (and btw it is NOT just a "screaming cd for the Ozzfest crowd), but if you can't stand cussing get this cd first.

The Cali combo Simon Says serve up their own style of Ozzfest-friendly hard music on a strong sophomore outing of melodic nu metal without the rap and with strong vocal melodies. Singer Matt Frank's vocals are dramatic but not overwrought on creepy-cool songs such as "Syphon" and on the portentous yet gentle "Tourniquet," while Simon Says's musicality boasts just enough heavy riffage on the mostly midtempo selections. The songs have room to breathe as the simple, solid-rock production sets Simon Says apart from nu-metal brethren who cram too much into a tune. Shut Your Breath is a cohesive, impressive effort from a band clearly coming into their own. --Katherine Turman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Definition of Heavy.......2006-08-01

I don't know what happened to these guys between their first album, 'Jump Start,' and this one, but whatever it was, it made them angry. 'Shut Your Breath' hits hard from the first track to the last. In terms of originality and quality, I'll say this: I don't compare 'Shut Your Breath' to anything, I compare other things to 'Shut Your Breath.' This should be the gold standard for heavy metal. I'm not going to break down every song, but I'll say that I thoroughly enjoy every track.

This band is no longer performing. They replaced their drummer and started a new project called Key To Arson which eventually died out. As far as I know, there are no current projects involving any of the members of Simon Says.

5 out of 5 stars Title.......2006-01-30

Jan 29, 2006 - So you're still listening to Rock Radio and expecting to hear something good? Compared to Avenged Sevenfold, System of a Down, Korn, Disturbed, or any other horrid metal band, these guys shred the competition. Picture a blend of the Deftones (back when they screamed alot) and an anonymous grunge band and you've got Simon Says. In a world where everything seems to be turned upside down, these guys are overshadowed by bands that are completely vacant of any musical talent.
Aug 28, 2006 - I was watching BeerFest in theatres the other day and heard track 1 (Hey You) on there...excellent choice and a pleasant surprise hearing GOOD music in movies these days...check it out and watch Beerfest.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST CD EVER!!!!.......2005-09-27

Matt Frank kicks @$$ vocally here with my all time fovorite CD ever released! I can listen to this CD over and over and over and never get bored. It's got every element needed to make the most amazing metal album ever. From crushing chords and sadistic lyrics to harrowing vocals and catchy chorus lines, this CD will have you SCREAMING your @$$ off!

Hey You - Freakign amazing! When I bought this CD after a friend told me that they were too heavy for him and he felt they were satanistic (you have to understand...he's a prude) the guy at the counter said they were very much like the Deftones and I thought, thats cool, I dig Chino and the boys, but this CD blows Deftones out of the freaking water! Just listen to this opener which gets you ready for a verbal onslaut!

Syphon - One of my favorite songs ever! Matt has the creepiest voice ever...he'd scare Marylin Manson.

Canvas - A great song about double crossing freinds...I felt this way plenty a time.

Silk Moth (Mr. Double Face) - More double crossment...The lyrics on this entire album are some of the most mature thoughts in music today and it's truly an art to see how Matt spins the web of his mind.

Segue - One of the most beautiful melodies ever..instumental but one of the best out there

Blister (Nothing) - this is the single and an amazing choice it was...Great song, and it shows what this band is made of.

Dead Weight - I love the feel of this song, is it acoustic is it electric...it just works all the way around

Limousines & Penthouse Suites (Break Me Down) - This song is about the pop trach that floods the radio waves today...pretty much Matt hates Brintey Spears and Justin Timberlake!

Dyslexic Smile - Great song!

Tourniquet - I love this song, like 'Dead Weight' to me, it just works so well

Train Wreck - This song is good, but it's not my favorite, it just doesn't fit with the flow of the rest of the album

El Ess - This is the best closing song ever penned...the music is just beautiful yet forcfull and brutal...the lyrics are engrossing and enchanting and you'll be spellbound...just listen to this sick twisted love song that will make your mouth water for another track, just one more track to keep your high going

All and all this is the BEST CD that I own, and I own quit a few. If you own and or have heard 'Jump Start' and because of that wasted effort do not own this CD please buy this CD RIGHT NOW...Simon Says are the prime example of evolution on the music front, they went form Creed to Spineshank in brutality with heartfelt lyrics and eerie gutar work and Matt's voice that fits this CD like a glove!

4 out of 5 stars an amazing volte face from their debut.......2005-01-04

simon says debut,"jump start",was a jumbled slab of poppy rock.so then out came "shut your breath" and i decided to check it out."hey you" and "syphon" made me hit the floor-i couldnt believe this was the same band.the singer was screaming his behind off and the guitars were ripping thru the amps like nothing before.the standout track on here is "dead weight".man that song is ill.for as long as it is,not one second is worth skipping.very amazing second and third choruses.anyways, its too bad this band split and didnt move some more albums.this one was good stuff.for fans of deftones, relative ash,and taproot.

4 out of 5 stars Very good Album..........2004-12-25

I thought "Jump Start" sucked. No offense to anyone who dug it, but I thought that album was just a piece of derivative drivel. On my buddy's recommendation, I checked out this album, "Shut Your Breath."

Wow.

Yes, I'd probably classify them as slightly nu-metal. However, these guys really smack you around aurally. They're heavy, focused, and vicious. I can't honestly point to a bad song on the entire album. My favorites are probably Silk Moth and Dead Weight - this track is an absolute killer. From moody to powerful, it just blows me away every time I hear it.

I hate crappy music, but this is a burst of talent. It's too bad they broke up.

            Album Description

Over the past three years, Shane has authored, recorded and published four independent releases. His first effort was a two-track CD single of As She Sleeps with Drive On as its b-side. The single generated a buzz in 2001 and sparked a second release in 2002 entitled acoustic backstage pass. The five-song album included four original works as well as a cover of Radiohead's classic Karma Police.

Shane's third release served as a response to those that desired a slice of his live acoustic solo act. Recorded in December 2002, Shane Simon: Live At The Mint is a soundboard recording of a live performance at The Mint Hollywood, the famous singer/songwriter club that has a distinguished alumni of performers, including BB King, Sheryl Crow, Jack Johnson, The Wallflowers, Taj Mahal, Stevie Wonder, Ben Harper, Tonic, Gavin Degraw and Vanessa Carlton to name a few. Much like Dave Matthews' 1994 Recently release or Jason Mraz's 2001 Live CD recording, the music is presented in its most naked and revealing tone … just a man and his guitar.

His most recent effort entitled 26 years, 53 days, 10 hours and 9 minutes is Shane's first full-band, professional studio recording. The self-produced album was recorded, mixed and mastered at Jet City Studios in Los Angeles under talented engineer Mark Nathanson's (credits include sound engineer work for Britney Spears, Sheryl Crow and others) watchful eye. The album was launched to a sold out crowd of more than 250 fans at Santa Monica's famed Sonny McLean's in early May 2004.
