5 out of 5 stars Catch the surge now... the Stringdusters are on their way to big things..........2007-04-15

There is a buzz in the path of the Infamous Stringdusters - the kind of buzz that surrounded Nickel Creek a few years ago and Alison Krauss before that. It's not hard to imagine that it's like the buzz that was around Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys when Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs joined in. It is the kind of word of mouth that comes from experienced musicians who tell their musical friends - "you've just GOT to hear these guys..."

Should you give them a listen? Not only should you, but you should do it now, so that in the future, when they're appearing on the Tonight Show, you can say "I heard them when..." Why is their music so exciting? The answer is not simple - the end product of their collective effort is music as smooth as velvet, as wild as Mardi Gras, as cool as the other side of the pillow and as hot as Texas in August. There have been a few "All-Star" bands that gathered informally and even recorded, such as Strength in Numbers and the Bluegrass Album Band, but I can think of no other "full-time band" with as much talent as the Dusters. In fact, I have to stretch my memory to think of an "All-Star" band with six musicians as gifted as (in no particular order) Andy Hall on Dobro, Chris Eldridge on Guitar, Travis Book on Bass, Jesse Cobb on Mandolin, Chris Pandolfi on Banjo and Jeremy Garrett on fiddle. Vocally, they come at you a half-dozen ways with great soulful leads, soaring harmonies and a sound that epitomizes a modern interpretation of "High Lonesome".

Their songs are original and intricate with arrangements that grab you with hooks that could lift an ocean liner. Bands with half as much talent have disintegrated into a mess of spotlight-grabbing egos, but the Dusters complement one another like a seasoned unit with decades of touring. They blend beautiful ballads with blistering barn-burners.

They are carving a new path into Bluegrass history. Hearing them gives me the same kind of excitement I felt the first time I heard Earl play "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" or the Osborne Brother's "Rocky Top". Take a listen to "Dream You Back", "3x5", the opening "No More To Leave You Behind" or the titular "Fork in the Road". Prepare to be awed. You've just GOT to hear these guys...

5 out of 5 stars Amazing talent.. a real must have.......2007-03-23

This collection is well worth the wait. I have had the opportunity to see the Stringdusters twice in person and was anxiously waiting for the release. I was not disappointed and you won't be either. You should get two - one for you and one to share with a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Infamous Stringdusters Deliver!.......2007-03-18

Prior to the release of their debut CD, the Infamous Stringdusters were the subject of much hype and buzz in many acoustic and bluegrass music circles regarding the band members collaboration - this project is proof that the hype was well warranted. The outstanding songs, arrangements and picking will have this CD in heavy rotation in your player for some time. If you've read this far, just click "add to cart" and be done with it!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Picking!.......2007-03-15

This is a fantanstic album! Fresh, innovative, with great singing and pickin. This is sure to be a landmark album for the next generation of great bluegrass bands on par with the Seldom Scene, Hot Rize, and Nashville Blugrass Band.

5 out of 5 stars Simply a Must-Have for lovers of acoustic string music.......2007-03-15

It's just 6 young guys and their instruments. Together they have achieved a rich and textured sound. An excellent mix of inventive originals and tasteful covers, this album stands up to about any test of bluegrass/newgrass music. It leaves the listener longing for more. Kudos, Stringdusters!

Sean Hickey's CV includes an impressive array of commissions and performances, due no doubt to the combination of adventurousness and accessibility that we find on this disc of nine short works. The longest, at just over 13 minutes is his Flute Sonata, whose three movements boast a nice combination of attractive melody, energetic, complex rhythms, and in the middle movement, a lively perkiness. Five other short pieces for various combinations of instruments, exhibit similar qualities. They include the aptly named Fluff for solo flute, the flute-clarinet duet Pair of Pants (Hickey has a penchant for oddball titles), and a piece for bassoon and piano, Granfaloon, that goes against typecasting by stressing the agility and lyricism the of which the instrument is capable. The immediacy and brevity of the short works on this disc seem to demand radio airplay. Included in the mix are two vocal pieces, a somber To the Wars, a setting of a 17th-century poem for soprano, and Sagesse, sung to an English translation of a Verlaine poem, for soprano and tenor with a chamber orchestra that plays a prominent role. The instrumental performances throughout are excellent, the singing less so. -- Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great CD.......2006-04-23

I am not really a fan of classical/modern music, but when I heard this CD at my girlfriend's house I was really impressed. The composer, Sean Hickey, writes very interesting music that is enjoyable and lyrical. I personally liked Left at the Fork in the Road and Sagesse, and I think his choice of text was elegantly reflected in the music. I was especially impressed with the playing of the clarinettist, flautist, and bassoonist in the first few tracks, which were equally great pieces.
I think Sean Hickey is off to an excellent start and his CD is truly great to listen to, and I would recommend it everyone, especially people who want to broaden their musical horizons...

5 out of 5 stars An excellent CD from an excellent composer.......2006-04-23

Sean Hickey's Left at the Fork in the road is a wonderful album--the musical language is interesting, thoughtful, and engaging, and the contrapuntal writing is very original and lyrical. The sound quality of the recordings are all excellent, and the musicians are clearly top-notch, which makes pieces such as Left at the Fork in the Road and the Flute Sonata even more delightful to listen to.
Sean Hickey is clearly a composer to be reckoned with, and I would definitely recommend this CD to anyone and everyone who loves classical and contemporary music alike!!

5 out of 5 stars A Stellar Debut From An Up-and-Coming Composer.......2006-04-21

Some months ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Sean Hickey for an article in the UK-based publication, Music & Vision. (http://mvdaily.com/articles/2005/11/hickey1.htm)

It was indeed a pleasure to meet this young composer, but it was an even greater pleasure to finally hear his debut CD. Hickey is a fabulous young writer, who, even at such a young age, has accumulated a remarkable catalogue of works. We will surely be seeing more of him in the future.

Since meeting this bright young talent, I have continued to follow his progress over several months. I recently came across a review on his latest premiere, "Ampersand," for solo violin & piano, which may be read via: http://classicalnjsociety.org/reviews/WDEH/032006.htm

BUY THIS DISC, for I can assure listeners they will not be sorry. All performers on the disc are first-rate, indeed an added bonus, thus solidifying *Left at the Fork in the Road* as an absolute "must-have" for any classical devotee's collection.
