this is a very nice ep pick it up if u can

4 out of 5 stars nicce.......2005-11-07

Doom and Grim is a perfect combo and the beats are nice!! These two should have made more songs instead of making 7 of the 14 songs on this cd instrumentals>

5 out of 5 stars You shocked?(...)? Grimm is rockin'.......2004-07-15

Underground, heavy hip hop that never treads paths others have already worn down.

Was lucky enough to find a brand new original pressing of this on vinyl, if you can get a hold of it on any format from anywhere you know you'd better start looking!

Grimm flows like water, to steal a lyric, and doom just seems like he's long since lost the last of his proverbial marbles. Crackin' stuff.

Grimm's disc is superior, but doom's is so good it only goes to show how good grimm is.

No doubt 5/5 for the amazingly hard to come-by Grimm vs. Doom EP.

5 out of 5 stars Classic from Doom.......2003-08-07

This one is a classic. The song Doomsday remix, is one of the best hip hop songs ever made (somewhere top 6). Just listen to the flow and the production. Pure magic. It's up there with Erik B & Rakin - Eric B for president, BDP, Smith & wessun - sound boy burreil and so on. Allso, check out KMD - 'constipated monkey' (=Doom + brother Subroc & others), which is also one of the best songs ever made. Buy the original 12" though, since the sound on the cd-reissue is not so good.

4 out of 5 stars Not their best, but still incredible.......2003-03-11

This CD was the first time I heard Grimm or Doom, and I got it because my Brother in Law is a chess player, and he liked the cover. A split EP between Doom and Grimm, ILL. Grimm beats Doom, his tracks on this CD are incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lester Diamonds obviously doesn't know anything so don't listen to the guy.

This is a great 3 CD album, quality all the way through by the living LEGEND MF Grimm.

make sure to check it out!

1 out of 5 stars whut tha??!#/?.......2007-03-17

you guys really rate this guy? don't get me wrong, i'm open to a different style than what's spoon fed to us all by the mass media. i loved it when sage francis walked on stage pointing out his cd discman as his dj. i love El-P's unorthodox beats (who doesn't?). i love kool keith's many different personas, regardless of how hard it is too keep track of them all. but i just can't get my head around MF Grimm's flow.

why does it sound like MF is reading his rhymes straight off his notepad for the first 6 tracks on disc 1??? then the next 4 tracks are ill. are we listening to someone else on these tracks? here's a tip: if the words don't fit the line, please don't force it. A-MER-I-CAN HUNG-GER...i hate it! and there's a reason why the review below said there are no stand out tracks, but it's not because the production is good throughout. this would have to be one of the blandest albums i have heard...even more so than the generic 90's hip hop releases like eric b's self titled album, main source without extra P, or souls of mischief's 2nd offering, no man's land.

i want to like this album, not only so i feel i didn't waste my 30 bucks, but to expand my hip hop knowledge, but please MF, bring some skills if you're gonna dis Doom. just 'cos one rapper has beef with another doesn't mean i'm gonna take sides. if both are good i'm not gonna rob myself of pleaseure i get from hearing a good piece of work. i like both El-P and & 7L & eso. i love el da sensei & tame one. i like these guys cos they rock it no matter who they leave off their xmas card lists. but Grimm, you embarass yourself dissin' a living legend.

5 out of 5 stars Such a giant pill to swallow, yet so healthy for your soul.........2006-12-08

If you aren't skeptical going into this album, then you maybe a little too optimistic. I'll state why as easily as I possibly can; would you even expect your favorite emcee to be able to pull off an album with three discs, which each consist of twenty tracks, and run about an hour long per album? I know that I couldn't even trust my all-time favorite emcees to deliver on such an ambitious effort, and would expect a large amount of filler among the dope tracks. Although I'm a large fan of Grimm, I can't say that he's my favorite emcee of all time, or even today, and I was more than suspecting a disc worth of filler. I KNOW Grimm is one of the illest in the business, past and present, but three discs? Most emcees can't even release two discs without including a number of lackluster cuts. It's remarkable that Grimm can blaze through sixty tracks, and continue captivating along the ride.

With that being said, this release is phenomenally crafted, and legendary for its concept alone; if double-discs album littered with filler like All Eyez on Me and Life After Death are classic albums, what does that make a virtually flawless triple-disc album like MF Grimm's American Hunger? While Grimm may not have the commercial backing of another emcee who was shot nearly a dozen times, or the cult-like support that his former partner-in-rhyme possesses, he is one of the dopest emcees you're going to find in any part of the hip-hop game, and his work-ethic even puts the most prolific emcees' quantity of material to shame. However, despite this album consisting of sixty tracks, quantity isn't the essential idea behind it; quality is.

Giving a thorough review of a work of art this massive would be nearly impossible to do, especially with the word-limit Amazon has set, and I doubt anyone has the time, or even the patience to do a run-down on each of these tracks; and believe me, every track found within this album deserves the same amount of attention as the next. While there may not be any track you immediately jump to on any of the three discs(with the exception of the infamous album closer, "The Book of Daniel"), it WILL keep you along, and entertained, for the entire ride. With sophisticated production, tight lyrics, and a range of emotion displayed by few other emcees, MF Grimm creates an album that is almost like a 'thank you' to his loyal supporters. In fact, scratch that, not almost - this IS a thank you note to his fans, and fans will be ever the more gratious based on this release.

Whether Grimm is spitting street-tales, introspective, and heartwrenching tales, or just dropping general knowledge, American Hunger succeeds in all fields, and then some. It may've received little publicity, even within the blogger realm, but if any release of the last decade deserves undisputed critical acclaim, it's this release. Hip-hop heads will find great solace in Grimm's rhymes and flows, and the fresh beats laced throughout the album. Those who aren't familiar with Grimm, this is recommended to introdce you to the man; it's his best, and most personal work to date, and yes, that includes all three discs. Fans of DOOM, like myself, don't worry about the beef; it's a shame, definitely, but as long as these two ill emcees continue releasing the music we've come to adore, no internal conflicts can change your view. Buy this album, and not only support hip-hop and Grimm, but also the ambition, and unbelievable amount of sweat and tears that went into this release; no matter how many dope releases have come out in this fine year for hip-hop, MF Grimm's stands out as the most ambitious, and complete work.

4 out of 5 stars The Original MF is Hot to Death (Def).......2006-08-07

Three CDs, 60 songs, and no filler. Amazingly, MF Grimm's gigantic triple album (the first in hip hop history) is full of solid material. I'm a fan of Grimm, but to be honest, I was skeptical when I heard about this album. Hip hop records these days generally feature two or three stand out tracks and the rest is junk. But American Hunger did not fall victim to this horrible trend. My hat is off to MF Grimm and his Day By Day fam.

Like always, Grimm's lyrics are on point and tackle just about every topic under the sun and are delivered with a lot of emotion and a variety of flows, or as the name indicates, with Many Flows (MF). Another review mentioned the two songs featuring Nate Denver. For those who don't know, Nate Denver is journalist. I've seen his stuff in Vibe, Mass Appeal (Ghostface and MF Doom piece) and Scratch. The two songs he's on are decidedly different, but they're hot. They remind me of Gnarls Barkley and N.E.R.D. Variety is what helps hip hop grow, so hats off again to Grimm for pushing limits.

This album is a definite must buy. Never fear the Reaper's here.

4 out of 5 stars Hip hop history on MF Grimm's triple disc!!!.......2006-08-04

[...]
WOW!!! MF Grimm releasing a triple LP! This is an amazing feat and one that makes for many skeptics. 3 CDs must mean there's a lot of garbage all over the place. In most cases, yes, but here Grimm laces each disc with a theme and simply drops science. "Grimm, you've been shot like 50/ you sould rhyme about it like 50/ then you'll get paid like 50" Okay, maybe not the dopest rhymes he has on the LP, but they stick out in my head. Yes, there are a couple joints that are blaaah, but for the most part the only thing that really sucks with this album is its cover.

Quite a few stand out tracks throughout the album with production by DJ Crucial, Skammadik (what's up fam), Soce (what's up), Architect, J. Marty and a ton of others with guest spots from other M.I.C. members, Large Pro and PMD. Honestly, the only tracks I cannot listen to are produced by Niel... or Nate Denver, pure garbage. Just imagine if Bob Denver tried making hip hop. Yep...

A couple months ago Grimm started building a buzz for this LP due to his developing beef with Doom and the release of "Book of Daniel." The track samples the same ish as "Pass the Bone" from GZA, but this track stings so much more. The kind of dis track that makes you go, "Damn... Only a loved one could say ish like that."

All in all, this was an amazing feat and it is an amazing LP. Maybe one day Grimm and Doom will kill the beef, but with Doom's rise in popularity and fame with the white kids, I'm not sure. Money is a crazy drug.

4 out of 5 stars Special Herbs & Spices (beats & rhymes).......2006-07-14

Dope emcee dj/producer lp. Honestly I doubt Doom was with him while recording this psudo LP; because all of the beats are joints from other Doom projects or from Special Herbs. (Hence the title.) "Special Herbs & Spices" is mixing Doom's herbs with Grimm's "spices." Being the current state of Grimm and Doom's relationship, this is the closest product you're going to get for a long time.

Some of the tracks seem a little rushed with the rhymes... but I was told he freestyled a good portion of this. Other M.I.C. members make cameos along with Fat Man Scoop who psudo hosts the LP, which leads to the following questions.

Is it an album? A mix-tape? Don't know. It kind of falls inbetween the two as it's an entity of its own, but also a promotion for Grimm's triple LP "American Hunger."

If you're a HUGE Doom fan you might be dissapointed due to the metal faced villan not being on a single track and have hearing these beats before. But, if your a fan of Grimm and are looking for the closest thing to a colab LP outside of their split EP or Iblys... cop this joint.

1 out of 5 stars POOP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-12

THIS CD IS GARBAGE MF DOOM'S BEATS DOESN'T MATCH WITH MF GRIMM'S LYRICS THIS THE WORST MF DOOM CD IV'E EVER HEARD COSIDERING THAT ALL HIS CD'S I EVER HEARD ARE THE DOPEST SH?T EVER. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR DONT COP THIS CRAP

5 out of 5 stars A manic monday and a plate of gritty ol' meatloaf............2005-08-17

Actually, i am a big fan of "pheonix/lyrical landscapes" type of stuff.....M.F Grimm on the other hand is a tad simple and raw........But this album is a MUST HAVE when you are driving down the east coast concrete jungle.. we call our own... Yes,,, Doom's beats is what makes the album what it is. Grimm's previous work doesn't stand higher whatsover, and never will without the aid of Metal Face. It's just a fact, Percy's grim voice and Dumil's instrumentals go together perfectly and get the job done beautifully. I feel Grimm without Doom is like cake without the frosting..something missing..If you never heard him before.. Grimm is sorta like the underground version of Kool G Rap, but more slower yet effective with his punch like the Thing....I am not even going to get much into detail,,,,pretty much,,, check it out for yourself...The kid got voice and some good concepts...and Doom's beats backed em up to give em a high score! Nuff Said....

5 out of 5 stars Why Is Grimm So Slept On?.......2005-05-01

I'll keep it short and sweet. Ill beats by Doom. If you know anything about Grimm, you know he's been through some serious ish. The emotion is definitely present in his delivery and his flow is lethal. Grimm is the illest emcee the world has never heard of. Cop this and support Day By Day Entertainment and all of the unheard emcees and underrated producer/dj's (MF Doom, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Large Professor, Jay-Dee, Madlib, Marly Marl, Jazzy Jeff)that keep the underground alive.

5 out of 5 stars Great Duo.......2005-04-05

Grimm and Doom have been working together for years. This nice little package has Grimm rhyming over Doom's excellent production. MF Grimm's take on the older beats is new and refreshing. Pick this mix up and you won't be let down.

    Product Description

MF Grimm aka Percy Carey has one of the most powerful stories in Hip Hop: Confined to a wheelchair after an attempt on his life, he went on to play an essential part in the mid 90s independent Hip Hop boom, recording with Bobbito's Fondle'Em label, spearheading the Monsta Island Czars, working closely with MF Doom on the landmark "Operation: Doomsday" album and subsequent projects, and starting one of the few totally independent label/distribution companies in NYC. MF Grimm released the first triple CD Hip Hop album of all time, "American Hunger", in 2006 and has made recent appearances on the covers of several magazines (Village Voice, URB) and featured and reviewed in Rap Pages, Elemental, Spin, Plan B, Juice, and extensive internet coverage on major websites (Allhiphop.com, UGHH.com, Hiphopgame.com, Unkut.com, Artofrhyme.com, etc). "The Order of the Baker" features previously unreleased tracks from the highly anticipated forthcoming album: "The Hunt for the Gingerbread Man", including lead single "Earth" and the 12"-only Optimen remix. The album will be based around the adventures of his criminal alter-ego the Gingerbread Man in the metaphorical world of Candyland. Features 9 tracks exclusive to this release, extending the Candyland metaphor of the upcoming album, with exclusive production from international beat maker Stricknine (Production credits include Thirstin Howl III & Rack Lo, Tim Dog and more), Distinctive painted artwork by Australian graffiti legend Peter Frickman (Hype Magazine, 183 Productions). Features a 30 minute mix of MF Grimm classics including tracks from 1995 2006, featuring high profile guests Large Professor and Kool G Rap. Includes Grimm rhyming over the classic Australian beat for Lyrical Commission's "F--- All The Bulls--- Remix" instrumental from the "Murderous Metaphors" EP. Grimm writes comics for DC Comics/Vertigo, and a graphic novel, Sentences, based on his life will be released in September 2007. Comics and an animated series based on the Gingerbread Man concept are currently in development by Grimm.

4 out of 5 stars Solid overview of Grimm's back catalogue.......2006-12-12

This album is an overview of MF Grimm's earlier musical output. Some of it is definitely in keeping with the Constipated Monkey and Monster Island early '90s kind of sound---fast-moving, plain ol' good new york hip-hop.

It is also a document of Grimm's life during the time span covered. The compilation is interspersed with radio interviews of Grimm on topics relevant to the songs. There's two Grimms here: the one that was living those experiences (the songs), and the one reflecting on them (the interviews). It's a compilation, but it tells his story, coming off as a strong personal statement in the process.

One thing I'm curious about is that the version of "Scars and Memories" that is on this album seems a little different from the one I was familiar with on Bobbito's "Farewell Fondle'Em" compilation. I liked the Fondle'Em version better, and I am kind of curious to know if the song was re-recorded, or if both versions stem from the same time period, or what. I wonder if many of the other tracks are different versions from ones that were released in the past...if so, then this compilation is far from definitive.

Either way, it's a great introduction to the story of MF Grimm, and one of the more essential pieces for anyone interested in the artist. Grimm is definitely one of the more personal and introspective artists I've come to familiarize myself with, but this correlates with his experiences.

4 out of 5 stars Incredible anthology of Grimm before "Iblys".......2006-05-12

I aparently had been listening to Grimm for years and didn't even know it. Back when I was bumping Kurious' "Constipated Monkey" and Kool G Rap's "4,5,6" LP, Grimm was featured on some of my favorite cuts. It was only years later when I started listening to Grimm that I realized I was inadvertantly down from day uno.

This LP shows the span of his work from the early 90s' to the present and it's a solid LP. Unfortunately, due to masters being lost or stolen, the sound quality on his older material is like a dub of a dub of a bootleg. It still is amazing to hear the original version of "Take Em' To War" which was on Kool G Rap's "4,5,6" LP. I honestly had no idea that Grimm developed so much of that song before G Rap got involved.

"Scars And Memories" is worth a listen and would have been a great introduction before "Downfall of Iblys," but alas it wasn't, but we still have it now. The album still has much of the raw emotion that "Iblys" carries, but at times isn't as intense as the forementioned LP. (mostly due to this album being more of a comp. of his prior work.) Still, this album is amazing and gives you a glimpse into how talented Grimm is.

    5 out of 5 stars Rugged.......2005-11-01

I didn't know much about MF Grimm until I really got into MF Doom some years back. I ended up grabbin' the Doom vs Grimm ep, which is dope, but it only gave me a small taste of what Grimm was capable of, so when I had an opportunity to pick up Scars and Memories I wasted no time. The album is a collection of songs between 1990-2005, but none of the dates are given, but listening to the songs you can get a feel for when it was written. To get this out of the way, Doom produced the first track "Take em to war" for his only appearance, but its one of my favorite beats I've heard from him, it sounds as though it was done in the late nineties, maybe right after operation doomsday, but Grimm absolutely destroys it. I had NO idea Grimm could come off like this, I had no recollection of ever hearing him so raw and his flow was just effortless. Song after song, Grimm suprised me, I didn't know he could be this good to be honest. I was expecting some hard rugged beats with some New York street rap thrown in, but this is an entirely different animal. The production is good, but its not like Doom laced the whole album. Its the content of the lyrics and the delivery that keeps me tuned in. The cd has a somber mood to it, so its not a sunny summer drive type of album, but man it gets the job done. My only gripe is the sound quality, Grimm puts in the liner notes that the original reels were stolen, so they had to piece it together, but its still a must have for any fans of Doom, KMD, Kool G Rap, Wu, etc...

On a side note, Grimm was NEVER a member of KMD, that was Zev Luv X(MF Doom), Subroc(Doom's brother), and Onyx whom was only a part of the Mr. Hood album. And when they are referencing Gravediggaz, it was with him and Roc Raida, not the Rza's Gravediggaz. He's Grim Reaper, MF Grimm, GM Grimm or Superstar Jet Jaguar from MIC and that's it.

5 out of 5 stars street music at its best.......2005-09-20

this album is mad ill,i love albums like this. basically what it is it's an album filled with his underground singles from the 90's.the album itself has dark productions, dark streets beats,if u see this in stores buy it.it's worth your money.for those who don't know mf grimm, he's mf doom's boy, they were in a group called KMD back in the early 90's. in this album it talks about how he got paralyzed and it has interesting interviews. if ur a big fan of mf grimm or 90's hip hop or u wanna know what he was like back in the 90's,then this is your album.if you're into commercial hip hop and that krunk or reggaeton crap then this isn't for you.support real hip hop.

      Album Description

The incomparable MF GRIMM has done it! He has truly achieved the impossible. The one known as Mad Flows (MF) GRIMM has created an epic musical trilogy entitled American Hunger. The first triple CD in rap history will arrive in the form of the three essential daily meals: breakfast, lunch and the last supper. Each CD within the trilogy contains 20 tracks of outstanding lyrical dexterity, innovative song conceptualizing, and uninhibited raw emotion expressed over thick, grimey production saturated in soul music. The beats bang with incredible consistency on this record, a truly remarkable feat considering the daunting number of tracks. With features from Large Professor, PMD of EPMD, Ill Bill, Mr. Met, Block McCloud, Nate Denver, Monsta Island Czars and many others, including production by St. Louis' up and comers J. Marty & DJ Crucial and Bay Area bombers DNAE and Architect along with a host of new boardsmen, this album is bound to have an impact.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Grimm did the impossible.......2006-07-08

He recorded this LP in 24 hours and much like the film "25th Hour" he did this whole thing right before he went to jail. This is very evident on many of the tracks on "Iblys." Dark, moody, sharp. Grimm's tounge spits venom as he faces the next hours, days and mounths ahead of him. This LP reflects a man falling from grace and trying to find himself... a single word, redemption. MF Doom execs the project and gets behind the boards on several tracks. Not an amazing album, but a dope album none the less.

2 out of 5 stars 2.5 Stars Feels like an Ep .......2006-06-14

This album is so boring it ain't funny it has cool mello layed back beats that'll put you to sleep but grimm hardly even spits with passion his flow is too lazy and at times sounds like he's humming to the beats

You see the MF but don't even compare him to MF DOOM, DOOM is light years ahead of him. I only found about 7 decent songs which 4/7 had to do with MF DOOM rapping or producing the song "rainblood" , "foolish" "voices pt.0 & 1"

Other highlights are the dark stringy "teach the babies" using a creative concept of using a sesemee street character throwing out a letter of the alpha bet while grimm follows with a rhyme for the letter. "howl" & "break 'em off (intermission)" are about the only songs left where grimm spits with force on raw production.

Lazy album that feels like an EP you'll skip more then enough of the cuts on here.

5 stars = classic this by good god's green earth is at the bottom of the list on being classic 7 maybe 8 good songs. 2.5 stars.

download this or don't bother cop the M.I.C. album, Rodan's & Megalon's album and of course any MF DOOM.
