Their 2000 Chaotic Beauty album sounded EXACTLY like something Kalmah produces. The vocalist sounds exactly like the Kalmah vocalist (and no I don't mean Bodom or Norther, etc.). However, in this album, there is such a clear difference in the band's music. The keyboards stick out beautifully and actually sounds like something like a piano rather than used in accordance with a guitar solo. This album is art, and ultimately shows that death has its melodic moments.

amazing melodic and atmospheric death metal!.......2003-10-06

This band might be hard to accept by many as death metal. This is so soft and so slow that you'll think you're listening to some wacked out melodic metal, or maybe even softer doom metal. To start off with, I can think of 2 bands to make a comparison to. The drums on this CD remind me almost identically to that of Nightwish's on their CD "Over the Hills and Far Away". Earlier today, I was listening to a band on my to-buy list by the name of Kalmah. They are a brutal black metal band, but their keys and I think drums, also, reminded me of these guys. So if you are familiar with either of those bands, you have a head start on what this Finnish death metal wonder sounds like.

One other "band comparison" thing I can tell you is that they do a cover of an Accept song, "Sick, Dirty, and Mean", as track 7 on this CD. They've made it another beautiful song to compliment the others on this CD. That reminds me... don't let the name of the CD bother you - there's not a single swear on the entire CD nor is there any mention of rape or anything. It's really a very clean CD, except for the vocals. Actually, at the beginning of tracks 4 and 5, there is a normal singer singing, kind of like a Sonata Arctica voice. I've already said that the drums are among the cleanest sounding you'll ever find... Oh yeah... Track 6 has the same melody that the Nightwish song "She is My Sin" has. Or at least it reminds me of that song.

Now here's the stunner: Track 5 would generally be classified as a ballad. All you brutal-death metal fans have just got to be going WHAT?!?!?! It's that slow and soft. It is also one of the 2 songs that start off with a normal vocalist.

Let's see... ... judging by this information, can you figure out why it is so hard to find a CD by these guys?! If you can find one of their CDs, probably their newest one, whatever that may be depending on whenever you read this, get that one instead. I bet Eternal Tears of Sorrow will always release CDs better than the last. They are softer than Skyfire, Norther, and even Children of Bodom.

An Amazing Masterpiece.......2003-05-08

A totally great example of how melodic death metal should sound like: agressive, furious, yet with excellent music: amazing guitar solos and rifs, easy-understandable, but brilliand mellody.
If you love band like In Flames and At The Gates I guarrantie you you won't regret buying it.
The best songs in the album: Heart Of Wilderness, Prophetian, Fall Of Man, Blood Of Harted.

Well worth picking up.......2006-04-18

This latest release from Jared Louche and company is a hard, techno-dance-floor reworking of Chemlab's underrated 2003 release, "Oxidizer". These re-mixes, by 17 different artists, vary wildly from the original versions, yet retain enough of the source material to make them unmistakably Chemlab. Terrorfakt pulled off an especially caustic rendition of "Black Snake" that is as dancey as it is aggressive. Of course it's always nice to hear anything that Die Warzau touches, and here they deliver rather amicably on "Scornocopia". Other acts include: Cubanate, 16 Volt, Christ Analogue, haloblack, Needleye and Cyanotic plus 10 others who also do these Chemlab tunes great justice.

What makes this project differ from other collections of the sort (especially one with a near 80 minute running time) is that there isn't one single bad number present. Naturally, depending on the tastes of the individual listener, some of them will come across stronger than others. Still, hopefully, "Rock[...] Vs. Dance Floor" will allow long-time fans a chance to reacquaint themselves with Chemlab and all that is good about them. Even better is the idea that this release may introduce a whole new generation of discerning music lovers to one of the finest in Industrial Rock.

The music isn't much concerned with melody, just timbre, rhythm and atmosphere. The vocal delivery has so much personality, and the lyrics are so evocative, like Jane is some sleepwalking stowaway on a spaceship, telling you half-remembered stories and dreams. It sounds completely non-rehearsed. At the time this album was just another quirky alternative pop-rock album, but with that era behind us now, the album has proven to be so much more musically enduring than I would have imagined. More Than I Can is the most melodic, immediately catchy song, and a well chosen single, maybe even written for a single, but the stand-outs for me are Blank Suger and Dream Ridiculous Implausable, where Jane's multitracked vocals reach their peak of random colliding cuteness.

Don't let the title fool you..........2005-04-01

This album came out like the first firefly in summer when the guys were pretty much swamping the music scene. Her song release, "More Than I Can", actually did get airplay, and I considered it a hit. Don't let the title fool you. Jane is more serious than comic books, and she has more substance than your general "whore". Her lyrics are deep, intelligent, and insightful - profound poetry put to electronic, bass-driven, techno-type pop rock.

The true artistry is in the fact that all this meaning is cloaked in Interscope Records' plucking, prodding, and polishing. It's covert, almost, as if they tried to hide Jane Jensen behind a cardboard cut-out of a teenage boy's fantasy, and out leaked the supergirl. Isn't that the way it is, though? We gals learn early what personas are presentable, only to find the presentation isn't worth it at all. What counts is the stuff we've been hiding...the stuff of us. Take, for instance, "Clumsy", where Jane Jensen asks, "You want the girl that you see...so why the h*ll don't you want me?" Or the confessional, "Highway 90", where she admits, "I think about a girl, she lives so fast. She coulda been a Super Sonic Chica. If she could get off her *ss."

My personal favorites are the tracks where she gets strong in her lyrics, such as "Listen" ("You, You're going to listen to me now. You, You better watch yourself this time.") and "More Than I Can" ("That's just more than I can give. I'm gonna save myself first..."); and the tracks were she gets philisophical, such as "Be Just Sound" ("Kafka's no bedtime story.And you're no morning glory.") and "Superstar" ("So why you wanna be so quiet? Did the angels get to you too? You know we always misunderstand them. We always do.") But I won't spoil all the fun lyrics about Buddha and Mighty Mouse - you should absolutely check it out yourself. This album is a must-have.

Favorite All Time Album.......2005-03-07

I don't know why nobody has really caught on to Jane. I have never heard her on the radio, nobody I meet ever knows who she is. I have introduced her to many people who instantly become addicted. Comic Book Whore is one of the most amazing albums of all time. Jane has a beautiful voice and hypnotic tunes. The words to her songs grab your heart and soul. I have had this album for years and it is still one of my favorites. This is a style of music that will never fade with time. A MUST listen-to for any alternative music or rock and roll fan, especially those who admire significant women in rock. She knows what it feels like to be a woman!

I was perusing my cd collection looking for music to review on Amazon that I hadn't reviewed. I came across Troma actress Jane Jensen's album "Comic Book Whore". I remember buying this cd at Best Buy when I was in college. The store had the cd priced at $8.99 so I couldn't resist. The cover art intrigued me quite a bit. At the time, I didn't know that Jane Jensen was an actress and worked mostly for independent film company Troma which is known for "Tromeo and Juliet" as well as "The Toxic Avenger". What I heard on "Comic Book Whore" was a sonic mish mash. There wasn't one particular sound that Jane was aiming for. Imagine if Beck Hansen was a woman when "Odelay" was made. "Comic Book Whore" ranges from everything from hip hop ("Luv Song") to rock ("More Than I Can"). The music didn't hit me right away. It took me a few listens for the album to sink into my sub-consciousness. Although the album didn't sell very well with the mainstream masses, it certainly proved to be very edgy and more interesting than the garbage that was being played on the radio in the late '90s.

refreshing to hear a female singer not bound.......2002-02-13

From the wannabe-wretched whine of Alanis Morissette to the oh-so-precious purr of Jewel, it's refreshing to hear a female singer not bound by pretension or packaging. Jane Jensen doesn't lilt where it would be pleasing to hear her lilting or whisper coyly where it would best butter up her listeners. She guides her voice by the emotion brewed inside of her, be that emotion coquettishly or unapologetically angry.
Luv Song is a perky ode to fawning fantasy while King is an energized flood of confessions. The ethereal Cowboy has a slip-away urgency while on Highway 90, Ms. Jensen mouths a lusting kind of danger. On Dreams Ridiculous Plausible she intones, "I must be dreaming..." and there is a sense of nocturnal confusion. Superstar has a hazy sheen to its yearning lines and Be Just Sound retains a floating chorus. Some of the other songs can be grating or borderline annoying, but this album altogether has an innovative use of vocal and technological mix.

Too bad it's only an EP.......2007-04-08

If another few songs had been added to the six already included on "Flaxen," Bethany Curve's fourth cd (and last as of this writing), it might have been their finest yet, and that's saying alot, because their first two ("Skies A Crossed Sky," and "Gold") were excellent. At their best, Bethany Curve's music truly rivals that of the shoe-gazer giants like My Bloody Valentine, Catherine Wheel and Ride. On "Flaxen," the stand-out song is "The Means," with it's soaring chorus,which surely must be considered one of the band's top tracks. I love the way the opener, "Automatic," shifts gears so effortlessly -- almost like a suite instead of a single song. In fact, there are no weak moments, but, alas, "Flaxen" ends much too quickly.

It took me awhile to appreciate this fine band -- you have to get past the gloom-and-doom feel of alot of the tracks. If you're a fan of the shoegazer genre like me, get all of BC's four albums right now (and while your at it, add to your list the three albums by Voyager One). From their web-site, it looks like B.C., (who are advertising for a new bass player!) seems to be currently dormant. I sincerely hope they put out more albums and go on tour, because I think this band has so much more to offer. Let the shoe-gazers live on!!

Sonic ahhhhh.......2005-03-13

This album is gorgeous. I think the Bethany Curve best describes it's own sound with it's motto: "atmosphere, arrangement, sound, layering, noise." Sometimes it actually feels like time is slowing down and I'm having an out-of-body experience. Instead of trying to make a big deal of vocals and lyrics, the vocal sounds more like an additional layer to a big fuzzy yummy drone-fest. It's contemporary shoe-gazer, and the absolute pinnacle of it's genre.

i did't thought that after "you brought us here" they would take
me into a new level of atmospheric guitar-emotions.....so i was wrong. with 6 tracks 26 minutes you could say it is like a EP or a mini-album but it doesn't really matter, what counts is how long the "strange feelings" stays after it's finished. i won't do track by track review, just let the music speak for itself !

One of the best ever.......2003-08-21

There are certain records/cd's that have changed my life and this is one of them. I first saw the Treepeople live without ever hearing any of their music. Their live show show was enough to compell me to buy this. After a few listens, I was hooked. They combine great hooks and good song writing to make tremendous music. They were one of the best bands of this era, yet virtually unknown. All the people who get a chance to own or listen to this should consider themselves lucky.

this is not built to spill! this was a prior band to built to spill and a much better one at that, you indie rock toad...! although the treepeople fell off after dug left, this band was great for 2 reasons: dug AND scott. oh, and the other guys. this band should be up there with bands like dinosaur jr. and the pixies. indie rock before there was indie rock. but this stuff had some balls. this is their best cd, but everything else they did ruled too, with exception to the last album maybe. and if you can find it, get the original "guilt, regret" cd on toxic shock with lots more 7" stuff.

Sum of Dug's best work.......2000-04-25

Out of all the Treepeople albums, this is the best by far. Hearing this one, I would expect the others to be great also, but that is not the case in my opinion. If you are a fan of Dug's work, such as songs like "On a Tip" (a Halo Benders must), "Car," or the amazing "Forget Remember When" (b-side of "Carry the Zero" -- another amazing song), then you shall like this. The majority of the songs are Dug's, and that's a good thing. The next best thing is Perfect from Now On, or...and...

this early stuff is better..........1998-05-19

The prior incarnation of Built To Spill, this group has a very peculiar sense of song structure and they know how to keep the energy of a song intact until the end. I like this a lot, since all these guys have carved a mark in the Pacific Northwest scene and this elucidates their first attempt at their incredibly solid, peculiar rock.

Whores Moaning is a 5-track release from early 1993 for SY's 2nd tour of Australia [on the Big Day Out festivals & their own shows] & New Zealand & only available there. The title is in reference to Nirvana's Hormoaning, a similar deal from the previous year. Kurt even did the artwork for it. It opens w/ the very commercial tune Sugar Kane off the then current diRty lp, albeit an edited version minus a minute of feedback jammy solos stuff. This is more than made up for in Tamra, a long instrumental jam that vaguely hints @ what would happen years later w/ the SYR series [the title is a reference to Tamra Davis who directed a couple of videos for them]. Apart from that there are covers of 2 early 70s punk sleaze numbers sung by Kim, Alice Cooper's Is It My Body? & New York Dolls' Personality Crisis [featuring a nice little wolf-howl from Thurston]. Both are thoroughly fun & enjoyable. Also we have The End of the End of the Ugly which is a instrumental workout of the tune Shoot also off diRty. overall worthwhile for fans & approachable enough for newcomers but not overwhelmingly historic.

Album Description

In 1971, former Iranian dictator Muhammad Reza Shah hosted a lavish and highly choreographed event amidst the ruins of the ancient Persian capital of Persepolis in order to celebrate the 2500th anniversary of Iran's founding by Cyrus The Great. This commemoration of modern Iran's beginnings was part of the Shah's own struggle with the country's increasingly politicized Shi'ite Muslim clerics, led by the late Ayatollah Khomeini, to secularize Iran. Declaring himself to be heir to Cyrus' legacy, the Shah presided over a cast of 6,200 vintage Persian costume-wearing vassals in an outlandish ceremony affirming the Shah's own interpretation of Iranian history, one which paid little deference to Islam.

The third annual Shiraz arts festival was held that same year at Persepolis. In keeping with the 2500th national anniversary celebrations, the Shah commissioned Greek composer and computer music pioneer Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001) to write a piece of music exalting ancient Persia's aristocratic pre-Islamic religious culture. Selecting Xenakis to author such a work could not have been more symbolically appropriate. A central figure in the development of computer composition, this half-blind former architect, WWII resistance fighter and associate of Le Corbusier evolved a new approach to music, most notably one that employed mathematical probability functions as a compositional methodology.

Titled 'Persepolis', in honor of the location in which it was to be performed, Xenakis composed a fifty-six minute, eight-track tape piece of musique concréte for the occasion. A noisy, apocalyptic-sounding piece distinguished by rising waves of intensity, Persepolis' debut must have been quite an experience for those lucky enough to be in attendance. Persepolis takes on an even greater significance when listened to as a musical work whose purpose was to serve a failed secularist ideology overtaken less than a decade later by a fundamentalist Islamic revolution.

In light of the events that have consumed the world since September 11th 2001, the notion that a radical composer would align himself with a political figure like the Shah shows how very few places such a brilliant artist could go to receive support for their work. Creative modernism is left with choosing between authoritarianism and religion. Hence the inclusion of a second disc of remixes in this edition of Persepolis. Disc 2 of this recording contains ten remixes of Persepolis by an international cast of avant-garde musicians, transforming Xenakis' original work in entirely distinct contexts, imbuing it with compellingly new meanings.

Otomo Yoshihide, Merzbow, Ryoji Ikeda, and Construction Kit contribute Japanese readings, while Spanish artist Francisco Lopez, Polish musician Zbigniew Karkowski and German Ulf Langheinrich bring the so-called noise from Europe. Americans antimatter and Laminar round the global aspect of this collection out by providing their own compelling takes on the original. Despite their distinctiveness, what unites all of these remixes is a shared sense that all great works of art can transcend the contexts in which they were first conceived in order to explore, and perhaps fulfill their greater purpose.

I have not heard this particular recording, but I like _Persepolis_ a lot. I will comment on that work only. This is one of the best electronic works I have heard by far, along with anything by Birchville Cat Motel. First let me say that Xenakis' mathematical composition processes and colossal orchestral works have had quite an impact on me, but my favorite piece of his so far is _Persepolis_, for eight-channel tape. As with any music that evokes such uncommon thoughts and emotions, it is difficult to describe. Somehow, it is a rare electronic masterpiece with dignity and elegance guiding its experimentalism. This radical piece was, amazingly enough, commissioned by the Shah of Iran in 1971 and scored as part of a light show, to commemorate the nation's founding.

This work, writes Xenakis, is a "symbol of history's noises; unassailable rocks facing the assault of the waves of civilization. Childhood's awakening must be maintained because it represents active knowledge, perpetual questioning which forges the becoming of man. To invent light trajectories, to create signs, destinies on stone: on mountain and ruins, through sound, through fire, through light. . . . _Persepolis_ is neither a theatrical spectacle, nor a ballet, nor a happening. It is visual symbolism, paralleled and dominated by sound. The sound, the music must prevail absolutely. This music corresponds to a rock tablet on which hieroglyph or cuneiform messages are engraved in a compact, hermetic way, delivering their secrets only to those who want and know how to read them. The history of Iran, fragment of the world's history, is thus elliptically and abstractly represented by underground currents of sound. The listener must pay for his penetration into the knowledge of the signs with great effort pain and the suffering of his own birth."

Who knows what he was thinking, exactly. Xenakis had a rather obtuse way of thinking about music. Yet this is an unexpectedly accessible and immediate work, constructed out of a small set of sound forms, such as heavily manipulated acoustic instruments and something like a ghostly machines. Even so, for all acoustical purposes you will never hear the same things twice. The piece is certainly noisy, but not in a derogatory, annoying way like a dog barking at you on the street or a garbage truck waking you up at some obscene hour, but in a very immaculate, deliberate way. At high volumes, _Persepolis_ can crush you with its power, but at low volumes, where one must pay more attention, one is really made aware of the hidden beauty here. This is a multilayered world of exquisite sonic evolutions that is both tragic and inspiring - just like human history. _Persepolis_ makes a human connection you wouldn't expect.

Unfortunately, this is a difficult piece to find the right sound setup for. Since it is supposed to be mixed for eight channels surrounding an audience, really high quality headphones would probably enable one to hear the music most clearly. Since there are never going to be any recordings mixed for eight channels, it's all about the layers. At the very least try and surround yourself with the music as much as possible.

electronic music masterwork from 1971.......2004-01-26

"Persepolis" is an hour of electronic music, composed for an outdoor performance in the ruins of the ancient Persian city of the same name. Organized by the Shah of Iran in 1971, this event featured 59 speakers in and around the audience, lasers and spotlights evoking the Zoroastrian belief that light is eternal life, and bonfires on surrounding hillsides. Quite a spectacle! I won't go on in this vein as the liner notes describing this history are already generously excerpted on the site.

Unfortunately there is much less information about the music itself. Apparently a truncated version of the original recording was released on vinyl in the 1970s. This Asphodel version, called the "GRM mix" (for the Institute National Acoustique -- Groupe Recherche de Musique) is apparently a much more recent mix of the original tapes, but I have not been able to find the specific dates. The liner notes say only that the mixing and engineering was done in Paris by Daniel Teruggi "under the consultation of Iannis Xenakis."

According to James Harley, a former student of Xenakis, the music is created "...from the layering and variation of 11 basic textures. These range from strange-sounding clarinet multiphonics to glassy string harmonics to grating metallic sounds and distorted wind effects ... one or another of these entities tends to dominate, and is usually heard in at least a couple of layers simultaneously, often juxtaposed with single layers of one or two other textures at the same time." It is a continuous flux of these electronic textures -- there is no large-scale structure to the piece, no breaks, or movements, or notable crescendos of any kind. "Persepolis" is evocative of cosmic energies -- the Zoroastrian contest between Light and Darkness. I find it to be endlessly fascinating -- there is more than enough complexity to sustain interest and repeated listening.

We get a bonus second disc from Asphodel, which includes 9 remixes of the original Xenakis work. These are a mixed bag, ranging from "glitch" pieces that I cannot stand to a few creative and compelling extensions of the original vision. Zbigniew Karkowski's contribution in particular is excellent -- Karkowski was a "curator" of the project, so presumably he gathered the remixes. Even if you find you don't like any of the remixes at all, you still get the entire Xenakis work for the price of a single disc.

Between 1971 and 1977 Xenakis further developed his vision and craft. "la legende d'eer", which like "Persepolis" was commissioned for multi-media performance, this time for the June 1978 opening of the Pompidou Center in Paris, is another spectacular 8-channel tape work (available on disc from Naive Montaigne). The 1977 work adds a macro-structure, building from sparse sounds to loud noise and then subsiding back to sparseness. For anyone who enjoys "Persepolis" it is well worth hearing.

There is only one book on Xenakis in English at the moment, by James Harley, who studied with X in Paris, and it's well worth checking out. One book is scarcely enough. Xenakis was a prolific genius, and I'd like to know more about his youthful participation in the Communist resistance to Italian fascism, so I hope the information gap will be closed in the near future.

Beautiful images & sounds.......2005-08-09

This is a phenomenal tribute album to the seminal post-punk British band Wire. From the gorgeous images that adorn the album pages (which remind me of some of the work of Vaughan Oliver and V23 for 4AD records) to the very high-caliber music included, tribute albums do not get any better than this. Certainly there are arguably a few tracks that might not be to your liking, but pretty much every band/musician involved seemed highly inspired, and wanted to contribute some quality music.

From the more well known acts (Lush, My Bloody Valentine, Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, Mike Watt from the Minutemen, and Laika) to the truly obscure (Scanner, The Ex-Lion Tamers, Polar Bear, and Main), this album covers the spectrum of musical styles. Sure, all are generally of a rock/electronica vein-but beyond that, there is a lot of diverse sounds here. And with only a couple of exceptions, most of the songs do stray pretty far from the originals as well.

Chris Connelly turns in an extremely odd, yet fitting, cover of 'A Mutual Friend' that is like some out-of-tune opera aria by an alien transvestite. Very strange-hilarious and disturbing at once. Lush do their glistening pop/rock thing here in their version of 'Mannequin'-I love the 'la-la-la's' they do. '12XU' has never sounded more different than the version Spasm (who??) do here. By no means is this a traditional punk take on the song-very electronic and slow. Laika's cover of 'German Shepherds' is one of the best things they've ever recorded.

And yes-this album is about the only place you'll find an actual song by a reunited My Bloody Valentine. And yes, it is exquisite. Sheer bliss to listen to. It actually makes their disappearance from the music world even harder to bear-it's that good.

If you are a hard-core Wire addict, you should be open minded enough to enjoy the very different versions of their songs included here. If you are unfamiliar with Wire, but were drawn here by a specific band/s, this is, with limited exceptions, well worth your time-and you hopefully will be encouraged to go discover Wire, the band, properly.

Solid Album..........2006-01-12

I have seen that other people call this band, "just another cookie cutter metal band". But to tell you the truth this isn't that bad of an album. They kinda take the popular metal sound with tons of breakdowns and catchy riffs and have polished it to sound pretty great. The only reason I don't give it a five star is because it is nothing too unique. I still find it a really fun album to listen to.

Actually Glass Casket is not a metalcore band. They are closer to grindcore than anything, with maybe some metalcore elements thrown here and there.

Onto SIP... this CD is somewhat generic I guess in the scheme of metalcore... but if you just want something brutal and simple its pretty fun. I'd recommend it to the general metalcore fan who is expanding a collection. Nothing very unique though.

Symphony In Peril follow up their debut with an album far better in musicianship. Based on Revelations 17, the lyrics are some of the best I've read, flowing well with the concept and the music. Symphony In Peril is a great band that rocks for the glory of God!

The Whore's Trophy is Symphony in Peril's second full length album from Facedown Records (Nodes of Ranvier, Sinai Beach, Comeback Kid.etc). The theme of this album is based on Revelation 14 in the bible, making Symphony in Peril an assault of apocalyptic proportions. Seriously this band will make you want to bob your head with their furious riffs and aggressive growls. The Whore's Trophy is amazing and if you're into heavy, Christian metalcore I'd recomend The Whore's Trophy for you.

Not worth it.......2005-08-26

There is no reason for you to buy this album. This is pretty bland metalcore with some occasional acoustic parts thrown in to break the repetition. No doubt this band has talent, but they really need to step up their songwriting. If you want a good metalcore album, check out "We Are Gathered Here Today..." by Glass Casket.
