From the perspective of 15 subsequent platinum albums and 20 top-10 hits, it's hard to imagine that Chicago began their career as a bona fide prog-fusion act, an early FM radio favorite whose jazz-tinged, album-length suites found them a hip cult following even as they confounded label execs. Ironically, when the pioneering horn band (a contemporary of Blood, Sweat & Tears and inspiration for one-hit wonders like Lighthouse, Ides of March, and Ten Wheel Drive) relented and allowed their music to be edited down to single length, their success was explosive. Most of the "single edits" on disc 1 of this 39-track anthology provide ample evidence of that de facto formula: a catchy riff ("25 or 6 to 4," "Saturday in the Park," "Color My World") develops into a hook-filled, pop-savvy production rife with the band's trademark horn perfection. One could argue that that sensibility--and a midcareer tilt toward producer David Foster, songwriter Diane Warren, and the MOR ballads that became some of their biggest successes--degenerated into formula. Indeed, there's much on the second disc to support that notion. This set spans it all, showcasing newly refocused edits of some their biggest early hits and lesser-known tracks like their lively '95 cross-cultural collaboration with the Gipsy Kings on a cover of Louis Prima's swing classic "Sing, Sing, Sing." --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars God, I needed this!.......2007-03-28

I graduated high school in '76,so CHICAGO was a huge part of my musical formitive years.Have to admit I was somewhat of a musical snob-all about the musicianship, and CHICAGO fit the bill perfectly. So edgy, raw, and powerful.Even their ballads back then had such soul and substance.
This is the music that got me through the rough times, takes you away to a whole different place. When I saw this set on Amazon,I had to have it;and I've not been dissappointed. When I played disc 1,I got chills just like back in the day. Rhino's remastering kicks serious a--!Rich,clear and full sound.I know the few edits are kind of a pain, but hey-no biggie.Just sit back, crank up the headphones and FEEL the music. Now I know what you other hard-core fans are saying-"What about disc 2?" I've got a tip for you-when you listen to the second disc, just listen to it for what it is-not as a CHICAGO fan. It's really pretty good stuff.Besides, the 1st disc is worth the price of the whole set anyway. Those of you who are not too familiar with the group, here's what you'll get-superior musicianship, powerful horns, extraordinary guitar work(Kath),a very strong, much overlooked rythum section and wonderful vocal harmonies.A band with incredible range and versatility. What else can I say! Five stars-easy!

5 out of 5 stars Chicago CD.......2007-03-22

We listen to this ALL the time... everyone who comes over comments on it. Great music. I bought it as a gift for my husband, who noticed that one of his favorites ("Colour My World"), is not included. Other than that, its a great 2-CD compilation of all their best tunes.

5 out of 5 stars The very best!.......2007-01-09

This is a two-disc set containing just about every hit song I remember by Chicago. I have to say I enjoyed the first disc more than the second as it has the earlier songs. I have always enjoyed the brass in Chicago's sound and this album brings it on fantastically. If you want to hear the very best of Chicago, this is the album to buy!

5 out of 5 stars BIG DEAL ANOTHER GREATEST HITS COLLECTION. THERE ARE OTHER CHICAGO ALTERATIVES..................2007-01-07

You could buy all the Chicago Rhino record remasters with fine linear notes, if one or a few of your favorites are missing. I like the remastering on this Chicago collection, I hate that Rhino edited a few songs. Yeah! I know no "Harry Truman" is missing, what a mistake that was. A nice Chicago collection if you just want the hits spanning their nearly fortyone year career. The beginning of the Chicago band was the best, actually the first nine years with Terry Kath and James William Guerico producing all of the Chicago recording output, up to Chicago XI, 1977, (output from 1969 to 1977). Ironically Chicago XI would be Terry Kaths last record with Chicago before his untimely death in January 1978. Wheather you like or hate the 1980s, 1990s material, this greatest hits collection, still speaks for Chicago as a band that has lasted since its conception in 1967. I like some of the 1980s material, despite Chicago being Peter Ceteras backup band at this time. I like 2006 release Chicago XXX, which I really thought had some of the old Chicago sound despite some ballads. Chicago still has four original members in the band as of 2007. I wish the bad blood with Peter Cetera and Danny Seraphine would clear and both would rejoin Chicago, fat chance at that happening. This is a nice Rhino remastered "Chicago Greatest Hits" Remaster with a few flaws, that I remedied by getting all the Chicago Rhino Remasters.

3 out of 5 stars 1/2 Good.......2006-11-20

I really enjoyed the first CD of this two CD set as it contained songs from the early years. However, the second CD contained newer songs with new band members from a time period I stopped enjoying Chicago's music. I would have much preferred two CDs filled with tunes from the early years. They certainly had enough songs in their repetoire to do so.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Bland bordering on bad.......2007-05-05

For all that we may want to say about Tracy Chapman, I think it all boils down to the fact that she is one of the most overrated artists in recent memory. Her lyrics cry for a desire to be important and powerful and fall greatly short of such aspirations. The music which accompanies her bland and boring stories are even more bland and boring themself. This CD does more than just put me to sleep, it bores the life out of me. Not one song, besides perhaps "Give me on reason" will stick with you after listening to it. The songs on this cd are adult contemporary at its most basic and least important. Pass on this one

5 out of 5 stars Smooth and upbeat....yet relaxing.......2007-02-02

Awesome....would love to have another CD with all the great songs as this one

5 out of 5 stars The Promise.......2007-01-06

This song is so beautifully written and performed, and leaves such a profound effect on many people. I first heard The Promise while I was pregnant with my daughter, Sydney. She had problems and we knew at that point during my pregnancy that she wouldn't live long once she was born. I became so attached to this song- and then even more after she died in my arms. I felt that this was her song to me. It's been almost 3 years since she died, and I still cannot make it through the song without becoming very emotional. This song helped to get me through a dark time in my life and will always be my daughter, Sydney's song. I have listened to this song so much- I thought I would wear out the cd. It is beautiful and I am so grateful that it found me.

5 out of 5 stars I love this album.......2006-12-24

I managed to get this CD from my sister and just listened to it
today. With most folk, blues albums it'll take me a couple of
listens to really like them, but this album was different.
Tracy's voice is powerful and on point. She also has a lot
to say and says it with feeling. I believe the folks who gave
a bad review because the whole album isn't like "Give Me One Reason"
did the album an injustice. These songs are still relevant today
and sound very good even 10 years later. That's saying a lot.

5 out of 5 stars I don't agree with the review posted below mine “““.......2006-08-30

I think this is one of the best laid back folk albums ever released. I know that's a bold statement but the in the 90's there were two pinnacle female folk albums that were released, this one and Natalie Merchant's "Tigerlily" where every song is flawless. This is one of those albums where the voice is so powerful yet subtle, that you could strip away all of the backing instruments and it would still sound poignantly beautiful. This album is great listening for driving, hanging out at a coffee shop, making love, getting high, etc. It works on so many levels... and I'm still saying this 12-years after it was released!

5 out of 5 stars something to have.......2007-03-14

These CD's are filled with all the awesome relaxing songs for the evening when you need it. It is just one of those must have items in your CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music.......2007-02-19

This album was a "try and see" purchase but I love it. It makes great dinner music, great music to drift off to sleep with, or just nice background filler during social events needing a softer tone. It is not all solo piano music if that s what you are after; the other instruments blend very well however and don't challenge the piano playing. It is a piano album after all!

5 out of 5 stars buy now.......2006-09-01

Want to know why I think the piano is the best musical instrument ever invented? Because no matter how the piano is played, it will always sound good. Whether the music is fast, slow, quiet or loud, it ALWAYS delivers with an appealing sound. This is something you need to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2006-02-22

This is a beautiful calming cd. The playing is excellent and the pieces are well chosen.

5 out of 5 stars Aesthetically Pleasing.......2005-09-14

I simply love piano music. If you're looking to relax, enjoy a peaceful time, then you must check out this album. If you truly enjoy piano music, this album is by far one of the best you can purchase.

As it says....it is the "Most Relaxing Piano Album in the World...Ever..." Well, I haven't listened to all piano albums in the world, but I don't need to, this one is just perfect for me, and I think you will agree!

I would say the pianists' are extremely accomplished. At times, I would admit-it's a bit 'spine tingling'!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Pregnancy Relaxation CD.......2007-04-11

I bought this CD to practice relaxation in order to prepare for a natural childbirth. It was toward the end of my pregnancy but I listened to it almost daily and really enjoyed it. It is calm, not annoying, and I liked the verbal imagery the lady uses. I was indeed able to have a natural childbirth. It is definitely worth getting during pregnancy. I plan on using it in the future and even think I'll use it right now with my newborn when I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. Great CD.

5 out of 5 stars A soon-to-be Mother's MUST!!.......2007-02-16

I was given this CD as a gift, and I call it my "God-sent gift" because it helped me overcome all of the "fears" I had about becoming a new Mommy. The meditations helped me focus on my breathing, and I remembered the music and visualizations as I was going through labor. When my baby was very young, she hated travelling in the car...I play Heartstrings and it calms her (and I) down immediately!!

5 out of 5 stars good for bedrest.......2007-01-08

I bought this cd for my wife because the doctor put her on bedrest and said she needed to reduce stress. She says it was a great support for a difficult pregnancy.

5 out of 5 stars Very relaxing.......2006-06-03

This program has saved my sanity! I've been using these meditations for about 4 weeks and already I can feel a positive effect in my mood and stress level. I didn't know what to expect when I bought it, but after a few days of doing one meditation plus a couple of affirmations every morning and night, I was hooked. The music is pretty and melodic, and the voice is friendly and soothing. When I use this CD I feel like I'm being proactive in the healthy development of my baby. I highly recommend buying this CD and making the committment to yourself to take 5 or 10 minutes out of every day to bond with your baby. It's made my pregnancy experience much happier and less stressful!

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2006-05-13

Using this CD throughout my pregnancy really helped me relax and made it easier to deal with all the stress in my everyday life. The underlying music is really nice - it's not too "new-agey" like a lot of those other guided meditation CDs on the market. Also, the guided visualizations are short enough that you can do one or two a day without having to take too much time out of a busy schedule. I love this CD and recommend it to all my friends who are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant.

3 out of 5 stars Follow The Day.......2007-07-04

While surfing TV, on a SCRUBS re-run, I suddenly see a roomful of people in robes start into an infectious pop song. Based on this performance, I'm curious! It's the song called LIGHT AND DAY.
Research got me as far as this disc. But along the way, we learned that THE ETERNAL SUNLIGHT OF A SPOTLESS MIND film also happened to like this tune well enough to include it.

2 out of 5 stars Is this children's music?.......2006-02-01

Lose the french horn, the flower-gazing feel-good aura, the gaudy on-stage robes, then expand the lyrics beyond the track title, and deLaughter (all the way to the bank, apparently) might have something worthy of adult listening. Ouch much!
P.S. Really, this represents the worst kind of psychedelic revival I've heard, the kind only Christian types could latch their lame, restrictive tastes onto. Yes, I said it!

3 out of 5 stars Buy Circulatory System Instead.......2005-10-04

This is interesting and has its uplifting moments, but it ultimately lacks substance. Circulatory System explores similar terrain but digs deeper (and soars higher) both musically and lyrically. I give Circulatory System five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Something truly new .......2005-08-16

Forget the hype that "new" "retro rock" bands get--- this band is probably the only TRULY new thing that has come up this decade. You have not heard music like this before. Perfectly crafted but not pretentious, simple messages about the beauty of life and music. This is what music is all about--- give the Spree a chance, you won't be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars polyphonic what?.......2005-04-24

I bought this CD based of some of the customer reviews. I was SO disappointed. If polyphonic means, no two singers ever hit the same tone nor do the voices fit to the music, then well, its polyphonic. The lyrics are just trite, the melodies are poor. Do yourself a favour and listen to the 'Long day' intro above. Do you really want to spend money on more than half an hour of that... that... electronical experiment? If so, my CD is for sale, and I hardly ever do that: usually I find something interesting in almost every kind of music. But in this polyphonic thing, there was just nothing to find.

4 out of 5 stars Great first step to Mozart .......2006-11-08

This cd is a great way to introduce your baby to Mozart. My son loves it.

4 out of 5 stars I'm a fan of slow songs in latter half.......2006-03-25

I prefer the slow songs, they seems to be a better fit for my baby. I also bought The Mozart Effect: Music For Babies: Nighty Night which I like a lot. The performances are well played by talented musicians. (I have a degree from Peabody so that's a true compliment)

Excellent, quality latin music with a NY flavor. Some of the tracks can't be labeled as contemporary or classic
(possibly standard). The CD reaches a peak with track # 14, Preciosa, which begins melodically with great lyrical content then, after about 3 minutes, explodes with emotion & power.

Album Description

For this raw limited-edition CD+DVD version of Living With War, the critically acclaimed original album, Neil Young strips away the choir, ratchets up the guitars and blasts away with all the passion and volume worth of one of rock's greatest singer-songwriters. In addition, packaged with the new audio CD is a DVD featuring video clips documenting the recording sessions for each of the 10 songs on the album (which is also presented with new artwork). With this Living With War, Neil Young is once again rockin' the free world

The original version of "Living with War," with its choir, has its charms, and some songs on it just don't work as well without the extra voices (e.g. the "flip flop" section of "Let's Impeach The President").

That being said, it's inarguable that once you remove the non-rock choir section, you're left with pure rock. Pure Neil Young rock. Cherry.

However -- what the hell is up with Neil Young releasing two versions of everything recently? "Greendale" comes to mind. Don't like having to buy two versions of the same album.

Neil Young-Living With War *****

Released in 2006 and Living With War was the return of Neil Young. What is ment by that is the return of authentic Neil, this is his first album in several years that is fully impassioned. You can since the ergency in Youngs songs here. Living With War is an album of satire and propaganda that you are either going to love or hate, there will be no middle ground with this album and Young lost and gained a number of fans over this album as well. Being a Canadian Young took a bold risk by making an entire album critisizing the American government. Now if he were to make an album about the Canadian parliment maybe that would be more suitable but then again Neil Young is about as American as you can get. This was a move I did not give a chance at first but then decided if I am a real Neil Young fan I will give it a chance and did and loved it.

Released in packaging that resembles a paper sack for authenticity and minimalism, which is what the entire album is about. It opens with 'After The Garden' a song about what will happen when the world ends in a nuclear holocaust. It is a rockin' track and one that really sets the pace for the album. Easily on of Neils better tracks as of late. 'Living With War,' the title trackis written from a soilders point of view. It is another great song witha chorus sure to grab your attention. 'The Restless Consumer' is easily the best song Young has released since Ragged Glory. With his patent harmonies as only his voice can deliver, and his conviction even if you disagree with what he is saying he makes you want to believe in it, and if you ask me that is the mark of a great song. The great guitar playing during the song is classic Neil Young. Destend to become and anthem is 'Shock And Awe.' A killer track with anthemic chorus' andpower resembling the power of the Young classic 'Rockin In The Freeworld' from the freedom album. The song speaks of days past with a less corrupt government so to speak. 'Families' is a great song with lots of good guitar work and great vocals, especially the harmonies. But the song does not realy do much to stand out on the album. 'Flags Of Freedom' is a great song. A song of hope and desperation at the same time. Speaking of the youth and how they have a voice and a choice to make and need to use both to change what needs to change. 'Lets Impeach The President' is forced and contrived to say the least. Though it does make the point, calling George W. Bush a Flip-Flopper but I just wish the song would have been written better, but the use of audio clips from Bush's speaches does add a nice touch. The song is entertaining to say the least even though it does stretch a little. 'Lookin For A Leader' is a personal favorite. It is a plea for a leader, a real, great upstanding leader of the old days to come and help rebuild the country and take it to the full potential. 'Roger And Out' is a slower song with some heavy guitar. One of the best songs on the album, easily. While the song is still slightly political it is really loosly political because there is much more subject matter behind it then just the government. The album ends with 'America The Beautiful' which is sung with an entire chior and done wonderfully. It is a really sentimental and touching way to end an album that is anything but that.

While I may not totally agree with Youngs views on the country (though some I do), and even though he is not an American citizen he does live in America and this album shows that. He clearly knows what he is singing about and you can really tell that the man loves his country. For those who say Neil has no buisness making and album like this and that this is not him, he is just an old hippie and it is about time that he released a politicaly charged album, and because he waited so long I am convinced that is why it turned out as fabulous as it did. This album is highly recomended.

3 out of 5 stars Bernie in TO.......2007-03-25

Does anyone really need this disc? As an avid fan for 30 years or more and possesing most of the catalogue it is disheartening to find ol' Neil putting out a purely redundant disc such as this. There is nothing remotely "raw" here, just a background vocals stripped version of the original recording. True, the more austere sound here makes for a more personal, vunerable listen than the original. But it is not the raw we expect from ol' Shakey. Raw is Mirrorball, raw is Baby What You Want Me To Do, that old Jimmy Reed tune that fills out Broken Arrow. "Raw" is a case of misleading advertising, pure and simple. His fans deserve better.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the original.......2007-02-16

This version of Living With War is a lot more raw than the originally released album. On here, it's only Neil singing, leaving out the choir, which I thought had weakened the first effort just a little bit, but not much. This is taken from the first mix at the time of the recording, and it comes across as more urgent than the first release. The guitar has more feedback, and it sounds a lot like a Crazy Horse collaboration, although it's not.

5 out of 5 stars RAW is the way to go!.......2007-02-13

Buy this for the RAW audio...the other reviews are right; I prefer this recording to the original LWW with choir, etc.

The LWW videos are not Dolby Surround (they are 2 channel) nor are they wide screen format, but the content is historically significant and adds enjoyment to the listening experience.

The "archive" songs (Mideast Vacation & Around the World) recorded originally during a 1986 Crazy Horse concert are fantastic, appear to be recorded in a different format (dolby?)than the LWW stuff, and are relevant to the LWW theme.

A great package!

You may want to take care in opening the CD/DVD package to save the sticker on the outside...it has format info, etc that I have not noticed inside (although I must admit I have not spent as much time with this set as I would like so there might be info there).

Haad the casette and like it so much I wanted to replace it with a CD

5 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2006-01-10

Travis Tritt is one of the most unique (and stylistic) singers to arrive on the "modern" country music scene. While not nearly as traditional as Dwight, and not as gifted guitarist as his cohort, Marty, Travis Tritt is one of the most recognizable, original, and true-to-form artist in our genre; his voice, although original, beckons back to the glory days of early Hank Jr and Conway Twitty....and throw in a little Greg Allman while we're at it. Personally, I prefer the traditional country sound, but will admit to occasionally dabbling in southern rock; and Travis has taken over where Bocephus left off in the early '90's. This album has a combination of his more rolicking "southern-fried" boogie numbers as well as some true honky-tonk classics. Not many artists have the ability to include hard driving rock-induced numbers as "T-R-O-U-B-L-E" and "...Drive in Your Country" along with such traditional songs like "Help Me Hold On" and "Sometimes She Forgets (a song written by a much thinner and literate Steve Earle)". And of course, there are the standard '90's fare of: "Drift Off to Dream", "Anymore", and "Tell Me I Was Dreaming". And, if that wasn't enough, his duet with Marty "The Whiskey Aint Working" is also included. Overall, A good album.

5 out of 5 stars This is country!!!.......2005-08-29

As a typical old time country fan, I ignored Travis Tritt. He was too young, he didn't record back in the 50's, and besides, he wore his hair too long. Then I stumbled across "Sometimes She Forgets," which prompted me to buy his greatest hits album. Okay, I was wrong. W R O N G ! There, I've said it. Travis Tritt is all country and one of the world's finest honky tonk singers. Do yourself a favor and add this CD to your collection. I promise, you will play it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest from the greatest.......2005-06-20

Travis Tritt is the greatest country singer ever!!!

Greatest Hits: From the Beginning is the best of the best of the best.

just great music!

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2005-03-07

Travis Tritt has been called "outlaw" country since he first hopped onto the scene with "Country Club." He warrants that distinction, but much like Waylon Jennings, Tritt can put out beautiful and heart-wrenching ballads when he wants to. This disc covers the earlier part of Tritt's career. Included is the aforementioned(and somewhat gimmicky)"Country Club," and another gimmicky tune in "Put Some Drive In Your Country." "Here's A Quarter," "The Whiskey Ain't Workin'" and "Ten Feet Tall And Bulletproof" add to his "outlaw" label.

But I have to say that Tritt sounds best on his heart-tuggers like "Anymore," "Tell Me I Was Dreaming," and the wonderful "Foolish Pride." You'll also find "Help Me Hold On" and my personal favorite, "I'm Gonna Be Somebody."

Tritt's a definite star in the world of Country music. I don't think he'll be regarded as a legend like Jennings, but he'll make a great run of it.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic follow up to their debut.......2007-06-15

"New Beginning" is a fantastic follow up to SWV's debut album. There are so many standout tracks on this album and the harmonies are amazing. Great effort!! Just makes me miss SWV all that much more. They are sorely missed.

5 out of 5 stars Great second effort........2007-05-24

SWV really goes all out on this one. If you listen carefully their New Jack Swing is still there, just modernized for the year of 1996. The beats are great, the lyrics are cool and the singing, as always, sensational. This album features a great song, Use Your Heart, which makes you feel kind of dreamy. Don't take my word for it though, listen for yourself. Great album and I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely Their Best...4 1/2 Stars.......2007-02-21

SWV defintely showed growth between this and It's About Time. They kinda slowed down on the new jack swing material and showcased more ballads and their vocals. Taj and Lelee get to sing lead and Coko and Taj lend a hand in songwriting which shows their growth as artists. The best tracks are "You're the One", "Love is So Amazin", "When This Feeling", "Fine Time". There were really no low points of the album and this album really showed that these Sisters do have Voices. Good Job!!!

3 out of 5 stars it was alright.......2005-07-22

I had this CD years ago casue these girls can really sing and but really, this album is nothing special after Use Your Heart though I had the first part of the album on heavy rotation back in the day. Same story with the Release Some Tension album. I would just get a greatest hits from them because all their best singles are on those and these girls have great singing skills.

5 out of 5 stars New Beginning.......2005-05-15

I remember this album when I was in the 3rd grade. I played this album so much. The tape broke, and I had to buy the CD. Their core urban audience will delight in everything from the oh-so-funky slam dunk beats of "On and On",to the sparse,no-frills street vibe of the bumpin'"That's What I'm Here For". The heightened soul awareness of ballads like "Use Your Heart," a breezy, dreamy R&B affair, the lazy, seductive "When This Feeling", the lush, romantic "You Are My Love" and the somber, melancholy beat balladry of "Fine Time". "Don't Waste Your Time", a dreamy, inviting hip-hop soul track co-written by Faith Evans. Coko and Taj turn in the sultry soul spiced "Whatcha Need", and Taj's solo debut writing on "Love Is So Amazin'. Coko and Taj made their debut as a song writing team with the bright-sounding,vampy urban funk flow of "You're The One." Coko composed the slow 'n steady soul grind of "I'm So In Love". With this album,SWV has re-emerged as 3 women ready to express themselves and be heard for who they truly are today.
This album is mellow, jazzy, streetwise, and has a little pop sound.
This album has been certified 2x Platinum. Remember, this was 1996.
