A teenage heroin addict, B.G.'s always had stories to tell, dating back to his first album, True Story, which he recorded when he was just 11. Nevertheless, B.G. ascended to fame with "Bling Bling," a love song to ostentation that epitomized his label, Cash Money Records, at its peak: unchecked excess in lieu of dark thug anthems. Those were the good times, and there was nary a hater in sight. Apparently, times are getting harder 'round Cash Money Boulevard, as reflected by B.G.'s latest, Checkmate. Gone are the epic tales of jewelry and cars, the promises of helicopter rides and fellatio. As Cash Money president Bryan "Baby" Williams says on the album's intro: "This lil dude rap about sunflower seeds, and somebody got killed; he rapped about stunting, and somebody got killed; he rapped about babymamas, and somebody got killed." That said, here the Baby Gangsta gets back to doing the killing himself. On "Gun Slinger," over a wicked pan-flute arrangement, he promises to "bust hollows like Cupid bust arrows," leaving "your family grieving, saying 'Amazing Grace'." He's no kinder on "What's That Smell," warning, "When it come down to you and me, it won't be me." On "Bounce with Me," he even indicts the bling economy: "Tie your family up / They all on the floor, nigga / By all means, whatever it takes to get green, I do, 'cause I wanna bling." Even when he was celebrating excess, B.G. conveyed arrogance with an easy, slurred drawl. Back to recounting tales of the danger zone, his tenor evokes even more gravitas, which results in a set of songs that are compelling and occasionally downright scary. In Cash Money parlance, this album is a risk, and completely forsakes the formula that's earned the label hit upon hit. But perhaps the clique is prescient, merely the first to recognize that hip-hop's Platinum Age is coming to a close, and that the streets are as real as ever. --Jon CaramanicaCustomer Reviews:

I guess its better for a consumer, but not good for a critic.
Checkmate is still a classic though.
B.G. Gon Stay Real.......2005-09-16
Really good album.......2005-08-24
Downright scary but creative........2003-11-14
With beats that don't reach for commercial acceptance coupled with B.G.'S dark and blatant rhymes, this album is a novelty as far as Cash Money albums go. Tracks like "Gun Slinger" and "Problems" are often quite frightening. However, Gizzle is succesful when adopting the not-so-violent approach on cuts like "Press One" and"U know how we do".
Quite simply, Checkmate is the best album released from the Cash Money camp in a while. Warning:This album aint for everybody!

Checkmate / Rhythm in Motion
John WilliamsJohn Williams , and Various Manufacturer: Film Score Monthly ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD Similar Items:

Product Description
Film Score Monthly brings to CD more outstanding early work from the legendary John Williams: the classic "crime jazz" soundtrack to Checkmate plus the big-band showtunes collection Rhythm in Motion, both dating from 1961, when the composer was known as "Johnny" Williams. John Williams began his career as a Hollywood pianist, performing in the Columbia Pictures orchestra and on various projects like Henry Mancini's Peter Gunn. Williams moved into composing primarily on television, before his eventual reign as the most successful feature film composer of modern times. Checkmate -- a crime thriller series in the tradition of Peter Gunn -- was both Williams's first series as primary theme and episode composer, and his first album as a featured artist for Columbia Records. These two vintage Columbia LPs are remastered from the original stereo master tapes for sterling sound quality. (The LPs at the time were meant to show off first-rate stereo imaging.) The booklet features a lengthy essay by Williams expert Jeff Eldridge, including new insight from original LP producer Jim Harbert. Sheer Brilliance.......2006-06-11
This is an outstanding production from Sony BMG. The thick booklet includes interesting commentary about the early career of Johnny (now John) Williams, some photos, complete album cover and liner replications as well as complete player personnel listings (not available on the previous Rhythm in Motion) and analyses of each tune. The musicians are the same basically for both records and feature such outstanding cats as Conrad Gozzo, Pete Candoli, Vince de Rosa, Ted Nash, Gene Cipriano, Jimmy Rowles, Joe Mondragon and Shelly Manne. On "Rhythm", John's father and brother do outstanding work on percussion. The remastered sound of both records is excellent and as sharp as the day it was recorded.
Checkmate follows a more or less standard approach to murder-mystery scoring ala perhaps Henry Mancini. But Williams infuses much color in his own concept, making this a truly wonderful listening experience. Some of my favorites are the opening theme as well as "Hassle in the Castle" with its debt to Mancini, and the loping "The Bishop's Retreat."
"Rhythm in Motion" comes at you with all the subtlety of a 12 gauge shotgun. Opening with a rousing "Fasctinatin' Rhythm" it doesn't let down one iota with the concluding "Buckle Down Winsocki." Truly brilliant writing and playing throughout and not one ballad in the mix either. Despite all the percussive fireworks creating sheer pandemonium, there is narry a wasted or ill thought out note or "ching" anywhere. It all makes sense and adds up to one of the most joyous listening experiences for big band/percussion enthusiasts (who like a good measure of humor) imaginable. No small measure to this album's success must be given to Hall of Fame drummer Shelly Manne who fuses all the tricky ensembles with his usual brilliance and execution. This album may be a bit too much for regular listeners but for those with true musical inclinations, it's sheer heaven on earth. The fact that this album didn't sell well during it's initial release does not detract one iota from its musical value.
Everyone knows of John Williams importance in the world of film scoring and Checkmate and Rhythm attest to his early brilliance. And I just can't imagine that Williams has lost nostalgia for these early efforts.
But don't mess around folks, this cd is limited to only 1000 issues and it's already down to 999!

The title of Marleen Gorris's film (based on Vladimir Nabokov's The Defense) refers to a chess strategy, and this tale of a socially challenged game master could be seen as a chess-world parallel to Shine. It's also a grand showcase for the budding talents of French composer Alexandre Desplat, whose sprightly, surprising score is one of the film's greatest revelations. Using spare piano melodies interwoven with a masterful use of the London Symphony Orchestra, Desplat's score is classically oriented (and is seamlessly augmented by portions of Shostakovich's Jazz Suite No. 2), yet evokes shifting colors of modernism, romance, and mystery that keep the listener intrigued. Using a light melodic touch that can turn darkly enigmatic in a heartbeat, Desplat's work here often recalls the music of Delerue and Morricone, and hints at great things to come. - Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
absolutely breathtaking..........2005-11-10
'the luzhin defence' strengths lie in what it is not. most of today's film scores drfit between the bombastic and melodramatic, often within the same score. even heavyweights like james horner and john williams occassionally drift into loud louds and soft softs. of course there are times and places for both, but sometimes such a score is difficult to sit down and listen to in one sitting.
alexander desplat's score, however, remains muted and restrained--and beautifully so. it's obvious desplats' in command of the music throughout, though it never sounds held back. the entire score evokes mood and tone, and commands the listener's attention throughout just to hear what comes next. i personally listen to this soundtrack often when I read. it's unintrusive, yet attention-grabbing at the same time because it's just such lovely music. the best music, in my opinion, is imagistic and 'the luzhin defence' is full of lush imagery. i've never seen the film, but it's not hard to imagine scenes and setting while listening to the score. and best of all--it's emotional and never sentimental.
alexander desplat, i assume, will be in high demand very shortly. let's hope so because this is one of the finest scores i've ever heard. buy this cd--it will not disappoint you.
Absolutely magnificent!!.......2004-01-26
If a masterpiece painting were to be put to music, this is what I could imagine it would sound like. The varying moods, the tenderness and the strength within are extremely evocative.
Monsieur Desplat is certainly to be admired.
"original score blends classical/crossover music ~ Superb!".......2001-04-13
The story-line and score are a perfect match ~ based on a story by Vladmire Nabokov ~ directed by Academy Award-winner Marleen Gorris, our story is set in the late 1920's. Strange events take place, when an unworldly chess grand master (John Turturro) comes to the Italian Lakes to play the game of his life ~ meeting a lady (Emily Watson), who is soon to be married to another (matched by her family). Thus the story begins, upon meeting the two fall hopelessly in love ~ the lady shows him a world outside of his chess playing ~ which makes the story even more interesting, as the two worlds collide.
Want to thank ~ Alexandre Desplat (producer) ~ Reynold da Silva & James Fitzpatrick (executive producers) ~ John Luard Timperley (recording engineer) ~ Tom Jenkins (asst. engineer) ~ David Stoner (coordinator) ~ Silva America ~ sharing this original score with classical arrangements and rare qualities which reach deep into our musical souls!

Sublime modal Jazz from the Manne's gang.......2004-08-15
adults only.......2004-04-20
If you're of an age where good wine and classic jazz are some of the best moments of the evening, this album should be on the rack. Berghofers, wistfull intro to "Fireside Eyes" keeps the lister wanting a bit more of the "come closer" harmony that quickly emerges from the group. The tight blends throughout the album could have been plucked from any at the Mann Hole off Sepulvada Blvd. You have to listen to this music. No multi tasking.
