Gorgeous music, bad quality cd........2007-04-13

The music is Mozart's and is fantastic. The last piece on the first disc
stutters halfway through, and seizes up my system. I don't have time to return items to Amazon. On the positive side, most of the time Amazon provides quality products and service. I gave 3 stars because I love the music.

this is a great collection of his work... the only problem i have found so far is that my copy has irritating "clicks" over the recording.

A good collection of his best work and I find it helps me focus when I'm writing or contempating life.

"We exposed these animals [rats] in utero and then sixty days after birth to different types of auditory stimulation and then we ran them in a spatial maze. And sure enough, the animals that were exposed to the Mozart completed the maze faster and with fewer errors. And now what we're doing is we're removing their brains so we can slice them and see neuro-anatomically precisely what has changed as a function of this exposure. So it may be that this intense exposure to the music is a type of enrichment that has similar effects on the spatial areas of the hippocampus of the brain." --Dr. Frances Rauscher

Dr. Frances Rausher sums up what I feel happening when I expose myself to this incredible composer (Mozart).

I have yet to grow tired of any of the tracks yet, but I will invest in more of his work soon.

Mozart's music.......2005-10-17

This is a review of Mozart's music, not the cd. Mozart is praised to the skies by all and sundry, including most musicians, including my father, who no doubt has his reasons. But my feeling about Mozart has always been that there is nothing in Mozart's music that is other than music. There is no logical impressionism, there are no events that seem to be transpiring as in, for example, Beethoven. Mozart is just music. Mozart is to music as pure mathematics is to science. It hints of nothing else and has no application. I find some of his music irritatingly trivial, for example, Eine Kleine Nachtmuzic. This is mechanical music that one can imagine being piped in by a totalitarian government that insists everyone be cheerful. If Disneyland was an eighteenth century totalitarian state, Mozart would be its Muzak. The populace would be awakened, like Chinese train passengers, at 6AM by the strains of some allegro. They would arise and busy themselves with their ablutions in a state of thoughtless cheer, never for one moment leaving the surface of things. That being said, the second movement of Mozart's clarinette concerto is the music that one will hear on going into heaven.

This is a very great chorus, and one of Haydn's best as far as i am concerned. The pace, grandness and spirit of the piece all conjure in one's imagination the majesty of heaven, and God's throne. I cannot help but be moved to praise the God of the heavens and the earth.

I came home from work one day when my uncle was visiting my wife and myself. He was recently retired from the ministry. He had heard a lot of choral music in his life. My aunt said he had the stereo ( power end of my stereo at the time was an Adcomm 555 amp. conservatively rated at 200 watts RMS per channel) up so loud it was rattling the whole house. I too have come to love this music. I mostly listen to rock and roll; but the way my uncle, and now I, play this thing, it is rock and roll from another era!!!

After Mr Shaw spent many years in NYC and Cleveland with RCA Red Label,he came into Atlanta for a big change! Soon he switched to TELARC DIGITAL! I still Joyfully remember our Recording of the Christmas Nativity in Dec of 1975! Sir Robert, conducting with earphones encasing his head shouted: "Stop the taping, there is some Darn Sizzling noise in those Lights!" We may have not heard the word "Damn" lights, that he employed at times!

On both this newer release of TELARC and the older Recording of The Christmas Nativity, there are Bach's Chorale, Break Forth, Dona Nobis Pacem from the B-Minor Mass, Handel's Hallelujah! Plus the exquisite, Shepherds's Farewell to the Holy Family of Berlioz's The Infant Christ!

Those who may not be familiar with Berlioz from both recordings, will be richly rewarded by hearing them plus the Rex Tremendae from Berlioz''s Requiem and the other Kyrie from the Bach B-Minor! Absolutely, no other Christmas Music can ever approach these two splendid recordings, which are the basis of the ASO celebrating every Christmas with "Robert Shaw in the Spirit!"

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

For the newcomer to classical music, as well as for the experienced listener, this collection is spectacular. All the selections come from works of supreme beauty and genius. A true gem of a recording at a bargain price.

Good disc of choral music for beginning classical listener.......2003-09-17

This disc contains short works and movements from bigger works by famous composers from the Renaissance era (Allegri and Palestrina), Baroque era (Bach and Handel), and the Classical era (Mozart). Most of these works are well known among seasoned classical fans and some have achieved the status of being overplayed (Handel's "Messiah," Bach's "Mass in B minor," Allegri's "Miserere mei," Mozart's "Requiem," and the original choral version of Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," usually heard in an instrumental arrangement of some kind).
Some of these versions are not quite at the level of many more famous recordings, but I think they are decent enough if you're not ready for an entire work.
Sampler discs like this one will most likely not appeal to hard-core classical fans, but this disc should be perfectly satisfactory for someone who is looking for a cheap overview of some great choral works of the 17th and 18th centuries. Lastly, some sampler discs don't have full movements, only snippets. This one contains the full movements.

Earl Wild & Russell Sherman play Liszt: Astounding, More than Virtuoso.......2007-05-08

Just when it seemed as if Vanguard recordings were consigned to a golden labels recording past in classical music, somebody who cared seems to have gotten the rights and is busy re-issuing treasure after treasure from the old Vanguard and other master tape vaults. Among the first fruits of this production love affair must be counted the Bruce Hungerford tapes of incredible Beethoven, and these tapes of solo piano music by Franz Liszt.

You should probably get both of these while they are still re-released, because if history tells us anything about them, we realize that they will disappear again from the catalogues despite their high excellence.

Earl Wild has had a long and distinguished keyboard career that somehow still hasn't quite become visible. Like that other great American secret, Abbey Simon, he has been talked up among the cognoscenti without hitting it big time in the music headlines. No matter. What you get in this set is a re-release of his amazing Liszt. Clear eyed as Virgil Thomson's music, these performances will surprise a listener, not least by making such cogent business out of what Liszt was saying to us as a Late Romantic composer. This is big, strong, feeling music that Wild performs expertly as if to the Grand Manner born, yet entirely dispensing with languors, catatonias, swoons, and other antebellum fits of the vapors.

As if that were not reason enough, the other disc in this set re-releases the even more astounding performance of the Liszt etudes that reminded us of another master, inivisible to the international brand names classical music machine. That is, Russell Sherman.

Like Wild, Sherman has keyboard technique to burn, and nothing seems impossible when either artist plays. Think Volodos or Horowitz, then, if you do not already know them first hand.

Sherman graduated from Columbia at nineteen with a degree firmly in hand, and his incisive intelligence sets fire to the entire transcendental cycle, piece after piece after piece. As much as any other recorded version, Sherman's performance lays out the whole genius that Liszt is, detailed, compleat, and involving. There is fire in this music, even fire of volcanic intensities, but it burns bright and clean and smudgeless.

Combined, Earl Wild and Russell Sherman reveal a sort of American high plains and New England genius. We are reminded of the New England mystics and transcendentalists, Emerson and Thoreau and Ives, in good company with the wide open plain-speaking of poets like Robert Frost.

The miracle is that all of this was caught on master tapes in the first place, and now it is available again for the time being. Don't hesitate. You will not be sorry. Highly recommended. Only five stars?

Pianism of first order!.......2006-04-05

Having bought this album on the old vinyl format in the middle seventies, I found it very pleasant to listen, because as all we know, Earl Wild is much more than a simple virtuous keyboard player. His musical thoughts may be felt in every single track.

On the other hand Earl Wild and Michael Ponti are at this moment the only survivors of the last Romantic School and that means we are in front the last exponents of a musical tradition.

In the case of Russell Scherman I find him a very solvent piano player. His [...] is clean and precise and he possesses that required technique to shine with those hard to play piano works.

So take this statement into account when you decide to bet for this golden CD, because the final result is even better than the sum of the parts. Absolutely recommended.

Russell Sherman's classic recording of Liszt's Transcendental Etudes.......2006-01-25

This recording was originally released on cassette by Advent in 1973 which resulted in Russell Sherman gaining international recognition. In 1977 it was released as a double LP by Vanguard. This is a classic recording of Liszt's Transcendental Etudes. The second disc consists of Earl Wild's famous 1968 "Demonic Liszt" recital. This 2-CD set is a bargain. Buy it now!
