Customer Reviews:
Every scene and aria from Don Giovanni is a highlight.......2003-07-05
With the new lower price in a different pressing, why not just get the whole set? Every single scene and aria and ensemble in Don Giovanni is marvelous. And we all know that this cast is definitive. Do it.
Good as it gets!.......2001-07-28
This is known as one of the best recordings of Don Giovanni, and I can see why! Wachter's Don is great- forceful, nasty, cruel. Taddei's Leporello is very good, too, and I enjoyed his "Catalogue" aria very much. Sutherland's Donna Anna almost is greater then everyone else! She threatens like the Don himself, and is very forceful as well. Her fiance, luckily, is not as wimpy as most Don Ottavios are. Schwarzkopf is a good Elvira, too. My only reservation is Sciutti's Zerlina. Though she sang beautifully, she sounded very weak in, "Batti, batti" or in, "Tra quest'arbora celata." Giulini's conducting is wonderful, so I'd suggest this cd.
Pre-Bonynge Sutherland.......2000-09-30
I don't care what you think about Sutherland's later recordings- you really ought to hear this. No mushy diction or moony mannerism here- it's crystal clear, and the voice sounds so gloriously fresh that it's actually poigniant to hear (I mean no disrespect to the path that Dame Joan and her husband took in developing her voice). She is perfection- precise, agile and yet powerful, not pasty like so many Annas; she sounds highly agitated (which is perfect for Donna Anna). If fact, she sounds like more of a threat to the Don than her tenor boyfriend. Highly recommended- and perfect in highlight form for those of you who own a full set and don't want to fork over the bucks for another full set.
Of all opera recordings, this is the best value..........2000-06-30
"Don Giovanni" is, in my humble opinion, Mozart's greatest work: a romantic and unforgettable journey into the darkest realms of his ingenius imagination. The complete opera, with its many dialogues, is really intended for the opera hall, for the vividness of the work can best be appreciated around the personae of theatre. The music, however, flows like the Danube, especially the hand-picked favorites. This cd is exquisite -- the best version available. Pop it into the stereo and let it play every track, for they are among Mozart's greatest pieces. The singers are simply outstanding -- and the Philharmonia, which is the orchestra to consider above all others when dealing with opera, is charming. I bought the cd a year ago for "La ci darem la Mano," and it remains my favorite aria of all time, and the cd itself is my favorite among an armoire filled with Mozart and dozens of other composers. I don't know why anyone would pass this cd up -- it is truly the best value in opera, and maybe in all classical music!
Best Don Giovanni ever.......1999-05-11
This is the absolute best Don Giovanni, ever. The cast speaks fo itself. With Joan sutherland just bursting to the Opera world as Donna Anna.

Highlights From The Full-Length EMI Recording.......2005-10-24
This CD offers only highlights from the EMI studio recording so if you want an abbreviated version of the same performance this is a must have. It was recorded in 1971 and all the singers are in glorious form- Placido Domingo's voice is elegant, rich dark and hefty, making every line and scena dramatically convincing as Don Carlos, the son of the imperious Spanish King Phillip, an idealist, a dreamer, a frustrated romantic. All these traits Domingo delivers in a performance that is unsurpassed. He was born to sing Don Carlos. Opposite Domingo's tour de force performance is the equally virtuosic Monsterrat Caballe. As Elisabeth De Valois, she is regal, grand and has a voice of graceful beauty and dark middle register that gleams with velvet orutund tones. She is every bit the Queen and her conflicted emotional state is well enacted. Caballe's performance is perhaps only rivaled by Katia Ricciarelli who sang it in its original French. But Caballe, always the Italian expert, knows how to bring this role to the most perfect degree of lyric drama. Shirley Verrett sings the mezzo role of Princess Eboli, the jealous princess and rival to the Queen. Her rendition of "O Don Fatale" is sensational. Her command of the role is impressive. She makes us sympathize with the heroine and she is truly one of the greater mezzos of the post World War II Era. This recording has to be her claim to fame at least on studio recording. Ruggero Raimondi sings the baritone role of the King Phillip. Raimondi has enough darkness and luminosity in the voice to essay the role with aplomb. He is delivering a sensational performance and he is paired well with Domingo in many scenes. Conductor Carlo Maria Giulini is a revelation as he treats the score with prowess and makes it a huge Italian epic that is more along the lines of Aida.
Don Carlos is a dark opera, perhaps Verdi's darkest. It is a melancholy, brooding piece of theater. Set in the dim Inquisition Era, politics mix with personal passions, religion clashes with state, and a young prince falls in love with his father's newest wife the Queen, his own stepmother. The music is a mixture of gloomy choruses and foreboding melodies with vibrant, elegant Verdian lines. The original French version was Verdi's entree to French Opera at the Paris Opera, the world's premier opera. His opera was a smash hit. It has never sounded better than on here. For the best French version listen to Placido Domingo and Katia Ricciarelli version with a cast that includes Luisa Valentini Terrani and Nicolai Ghiurov.

Good Performance, Wierd Remastering.......2005-10-22
If Decca had just done a good, normal stereo remastering of this late 60's recording of 'Don Giovanni' highlights, with Sutherland et. al., this budget disc would have been both a winner and a bargain. However, it has become an 'Eloquence' release, with strange ambient surround coding to create a wierd overlay of resonance which has the odd effect of also magnifying random noises in the original recording when listened to closely. Basically, if you're listening to this on a boombox, it sounds like an adequate budget recording. On headphones, or good equipment, forget it.

Could Have Been Greater..But It's So-So.......2005-02-26
With all the Don Giovanni recordings out there, selecting one to own can be pretty daunting. However, opera fans are drawn not just to the music, but to the individual singers. If you are a visual kind of person, go for Don Giovanni on film and DVD. There is a great 1979 film by director Joseph Losey, starring Ruggero Raimondi as the Don, and also starring Jose Van Dam as Leporello and Kiri Te Kenawa as Dona Elvira. This movie is by far the best, truly capturing Mozart's original vision of the opera, and is filmed on location in Italy. Herbert Von Karajan conducting the Met in a performance with Samuel Ramey as the Don and Anna Tomowa Sintow as Dona Anna, with Kathleen Battle as Zerlina, is also one that stands out, especially because of Karajan's concept. But what of a recording ? What of this recording ?First of all, this is only so-so for me. Cesare Siepi as the Don is undoubtedly, a great performance. For many years, after World War II, namely in the 50's and early 60's, Cesare Siepi was the definative Don Giovanni of his age. He was sexy, and not overweight as some baritones had been before him, and he was devilish, subtle and callous. He was said he would throw a glass of champagne directly after his "Fin cha del vino" aria. He captured the spirit of the devilish Don and set the bar high for other Dons that would come- Norman Treigle, Samuel Ramey, Thomas Allen, Rodney Gilfry, and even Bryn Terfel. So yes, the lead singer is doing a heck of a performance. He has a melodic and sonorous bass voice and his acting is sensational. He is reckless, he is vulgar, he's the sexy jerk whose lifestyle sends him to Hell.
Leontyne Price: Her portrayal of Dona Elvira in this album is very good indeed. She is appropriately feisty and melodramatic. She rages at the Don for betraying her in her first confrontation with him, she is warning Zerlina against his evil ways in "Fuggi Il Traditor" in such a way that we forget that Price is singing beautifully. She's a great actress in the role. She has a fine Mozart voice. Many people overlook the fact she had a repertoire other than Verdi and Puccini. She was a gifted Mozartian soprano. In another recording, probably prior to this one, she sang Dona Ana next to Eberhard Wachter's Don Giovanni in a live recording with the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of Herbert Von Karajan. Any soprano who can master both Dona Ana and Dona Elvira (Beverly Sills was another one) is a great singer of the highest calibre.
Fernando Corena as Leporello is quite good. He specialized in comic roles and was the reigning "basso buffo" of his day. He makes a lovable Leporello, grumbling on and on about his master, wishing he could be free and not do his dirty work. Corena is supremely good in this recording. Cesare Valleti as Don Ottavio is appropriately dull. Maybe he is singing in a dull manner but then again the role of Dona Ana's weak boyfriend calls for dull singing. He is supposed to appear lackluster next to the Don, though his tenor voice is a lot higher, more lyric and flexible than even the Don's earthy bass. Only a few tenors can master the role of Don Ottavio without making him appear foolish. Among these are Peter Schreier and Kenneth Reigle. Eugenia Ratti as Zerlina is sweet and seductive. No complaints there.
The biggest disappointment is Birgit Nilsson as Dona Ana. What was Erich Leinsdorf thinking when he cast her ? My guess is that Birgit Nilsson had studied the role, felt secure about herself and decided to land the role, without realizing that, and I'm sorry to the more hard-core Nilsson fans, she doesn't have a Mozart voice!! It's true that heavy, high and dramatic voices of tessitura have sung the role of Dona Ana with aplomb- among these are the forementioned Leontine Price, Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Edda Moser, Sena Jurinac and Anna Tomowa Sintow. Lighter voices like Beverly Sills and Renee Fleming have also sung the role. But make no mistake. Birgit Nilsson doesn't do justice to the role. She is singing in a bizarre, detached manner, without any dramatic commitment. True, her voice is powerful, high and heavy. True she could have possibly made a fine Dona Ana. But she doesn't. It's just not there. There's no passion or integrity. In the scene where she discovers that the Don has slain her father in a duel she lowers her voice to a whisper instead of crying out as she should in horror. She has no coloratura to dazzle us in "Non Mi Dir Bel Idol Mio..Forse Il Cielo". One reviewer said the role is "beneath her". It's not only beneath her, it's simpy out of her league. There are better Dona Ana's out there.
So finally go for these recordings: Herbert Van Karajan conducting the Vienna Philharmonic with Eberhard Wachter as the Don, Walter Berry as Leporello and Leontine Price as Dona Ana, Raimondi, Te Kenawa, Edda Moser and Jose Van Dam in the recording soundtrack to the 1979 film, and the recording with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau as the Don, who is paired with Sena Jurinac as Dona Anna and Maria Stader as Elvira. Of course, that's just my personal preference. But this recording is not so bad, if only they had cast Leontine Price as Dona Ana and Elisabeth Schwartkopff as Elvira, then it would have been better.
A great highlights disc.......2001-06-13
I own the Giulini set and would not trade it in for any other version. But this disc has voices you will not hear elsewhere: Siepi as the Don; Corena as Leporello; Leontine price and Birgit Nilsson as Elvira and Anna. Granted that as a conductor Leinsdorf is no Giulini but so what. I turn to this disc to hear some great singing in the familiar numbers. For anyone who owns a full text set this highlights disc is a perfect supplement. And the price is right.
Classic Don Giovanni Leontyne's first complete opera record.......2001-03-27
To say that this is "the" recording of Don would not be fair as there are excellent recordings on all labels. This is the first complete opera recording Leontyne Price made and was originally released on RCA Red Seal. It has gone thru many reincarnations on RCA then as a complete opera release on London/Decca. This time a good highlights recording has been released with the addition of new technology. The transfers is great and if this recording is one of your old favorites, as it is mine, you will probably add it again to your collection. Keep listening.

Still a drag.......2007-07-09
I bought this (for $5) for the just the 17th century pop tunes I thought it was filled with, no recitatives. No good tunes, no recitatives, no nothing. Just the one slow tune (soprano's) that everyone knows. I don't know what it's called and I don't care. But I gave it a star. And $5 + shipping. Mozart could write pretty tunes for the voice, but he didn't write any in his operas!
