This five-CD box set soundtrack to filmmaker Ken Burns's 10-part, 19-hour documentary Jazz spans nearly a century of jazz styles, from the martial rhythms of James Reese Europe to the soul-jazz of Grover Washington Jr. It includes time-tested classics like Benny Goodman's 1938 classic, "Sing, Sing, Sing"; John Coltrane's chanting 1965 immortal track, "A Love Supreme"; Billie Holiday's blue-ember ballad, "God Bless the Child"; and Ella Fitzgerald peeling off "A-Tisket A-Tasket." Bebop is represented by Charlie Parker's orchestral bop version of "Just Friends"; Thelonious Monk's nocturnal calling card, "'Round Midnight"; and Dizzy Gillespie's "Salt Peanuts" and "Groovin' High."

The jazz-instrumentalist-as-singer comes to life on Coleman Hawkins's "Body and Soul" and Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers' "Doodlin'." Clifford Brown and Max Roach's "I Get a Kick out of You" epitomizes the hard-bop era, while Miles Davis's "So What" stands as the modal masterpiece. The cool school is in session with Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan dishing out "Walkin' Shoes," and the Modern Jazz Quartet's soulful elegy "Django" straddles all the above musical orbits. As for Django Reinhardt, he's featured on "Shine" with the justly famed Le Quartet du Hot Club de France.

Louis Armstrong's "West End Blues" and "Potato Head Blues" and Duke Ellington's rousing rendition of Billy Strayhorn's anthem, "Take the A Train," and his moody "Solitude" show why they are the Olympian masters of this art form--and the most frequently featured artists in the series. Although Ken Burns tries bringing the music up-to-date with Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson, and two jazz-hip-hop-influenced tracks--Herbie Hancock's robotic "Rockit" and the French-language "Un Aige en Danger" by MC Solaar and bass legend Ron Carter--there are significant holes here. After Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman, the avant-garde period from the late 1960s to the 1980s is lacking. And aside from the bossa nova hit "Desafinado," Latin jazz is also missing. It's a tough task summarizing jazz in five CDs, and Burns has given us a vibrant and vivid multicolored aural portrait of the music. --Eugene Holley Jr.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Selection, An Odd Accompaniment to the Documentary.......2007-04-25

To chronicle the first six decades or so of American jazz in five CD's is an ambitious undertaking. Ken Burns pulled it off by making it the soundtrack to stories he wanted to tell. This made for heavy representation of songs from Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis easy choices. The documentary, in some ways, tells like an allegory of racism and civil rights in 20th century America, yet the soundrack includes white musicians like Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Dave Brubek and Benny Goodman in the CD selections. Brubek's inclusion is particularly notable after the documentary was so dismissive of "West Coast Jazz" - I don't even remember Take 5 being mentioned in the documentary. It would have been nice to include Bill Evans since every jazz pianist that followed him credited Evans as an influence, but his work as side man on "So What" is all we get. Herbie Hancock's Rockit is nowhere close to representative of his body of work. My main disappointment is that after Free Jazz and the like, jazz had nowhere left to go except backwards, yet the contemporary "pop" jazz at the end comes across as the latest and greatest thing yet. I respectfully disagree.

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Jazz.......2007-03-23

For those just getting into Jazz or just need a refresher course this is a great CD. I brought it for my husband who is a big Jazz fan and he just loves it and gets alot of use out of them.

5 out of 5 stars Ken Burn's Jazz CD.......2007-01-14

A great cd with many remastered original recordings of jazz greats. Each cd features a different jazz era, so one can select a jazz genre to suit one's mood.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.........2007-01-05

..for any jazz fan or music history buff. LOADS of content, hours and hours of great music.

5 out of 5 stars Good starter set for jazz beginners.......2006-02-22

This is a beautifully packaged 5 disc set highlighting some of the greatest jazz artists of all time. If you buy this set and are really excited about the sound and the masterful artists presented then, I highly recommend collecting the 22 discs of individual artists by Burns which showcase the popular and influential music of those artists. Having all of the Ken Burns Jazz editions is of course just a start but a good start into the world of jazz it will be.

5 out of 5 stars My Twins Song.......2007-01-23

I love this CD. My Father in law would sing this to my tiny twins while in the hospital & then onto when they came home & everyday he would hear it on the radio & just ring our phones & let it play thru the speakers. My Babies would be Fussy or crying & as soon as i turn this song on you would hear nothing absolutely nothing!!! After searching for the cd we found it & was given to him for a christmas gift however he didn't get to hear it he passed away on christmas day morning so unfotunately now that cd has been put! We all miss him dearly & know that he is in a better place & is watching over us right now!!!

4 out of 5 stars what a wonderful world.......2007-01-13

Louis Armstrong reminds us through his voice what a simple and wonderful world we once had. This record is a classic - will never fade. Even my 6 year old son liked it.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful CD!.......2007-01-03

You can't go wrong with a collection of songs by Louis Armstrong. What a Wonderful World, Dream a Little Dream of Me, Cabaret were the most familiar to me; but even those I did not know are great.

5 out of 5 stars Great Recording!.......2006-11-06

Quality of the recording is excellent. Captures the essence of Louis Armstrong. We have enjoyed listening to it.

Product Description

If you believe Robert Johnson was the first to play rock ’n’ roll, listen up. Records made by African-American artists in the 1890s anticipated by decades the essentials of jazz, rhythm and blues, rock ’n’ roll—and yes, even Robert Johnson. Unlike the pioneer blues and jazzmen of the 1920s—whose contributions to American music are duly documented and appreciated today—the achievements of their forgotten predecessors are all but erased from history: the sound too limited, the grooves too noisy, the words too painful. Tim Brooks brought the Lost Sounds of these pioneer black performers to our notice with the publication of his groundbreaking book. Archeophone brings these Lost Sounds to life with the release of this CD. And none too soon, as the precious few sounds that have survived a century of neglect are fading fast. Those experienced with pioneer recordings are in for some surprises, as most are reissued here for the first time. And those who are not . . . you’ve not heard anything like them before. Many are not easy to listen to. But they are worth the effort, as they let us hear—as close to first hand as possible—the forgotten black artists who contributed so significantly to American music and culture. Your view of history is about to be rocked.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting .......2007-03-11

This is not my favorite of my many compilations of early American recordings but it does have some very interesting stuff on it. A better comp in my opinion is Roots N' Blues,The Retrospective(1925-1950). Now thats a great overview of early americana. But still, Lost Sounds has its merits. The songs that have very rough reproduction actually give the CD a haunting quality. If you want to go way back to the dawn of the recording industry like I did then you will not be disappointed but if you want something a little more listenable, then go w/ the Roots CD. Hope that was helpful to somebody...

3 out of 5 stars for audiophiles and history buffs only........2007-02-22

if like me, you are fascinated with sound, and find it mind-boggling to put on a pair of headphones and hear the voice of someone who was alive in 1891 coming back to life right in your ears, then this 2 disc set is for you. if you are simply looking for a purely rewarding musical experience, then this set is probably not for you. understandably, all the stuff recorded before roughly 1910 has very, very poor sound quality. it is the fascination with the mere existence of these sounds that is the thrill, not the tunes themselves. the post 1910 tracks have basically good sound quality for the most part, and there is a wide variety of styles, all pre-blues, except for the last song of disc 2, w.c. handy's memphis blues band playing their legendary "st louis blues," which is still part marching band, part vaudeville, as much as it is blues. elsewhere you get gospel, singing quartets, folk tunes, classical, opera, orchestras, jazz, and 2 spoken word tracks (one by then heavyweight boxing champion jack johnson, and one by booker t. washington). you also get a lot of novelty tunes (i repeat a lot of novelty tunes), especially on disc one. i don't know if these novelty numbers actually passed for funny back in the day, but they wear pretty thin pretty quick to the modern sensiblity. anyway, fascinating for lovers of history, or collectors of old-time audio, but will not fulfill your wildest musical dreams i am afraid.

5 out of 5 stars Deserving of Recognition.......2007-02-14

First of all, congratulations to Archeophone Records and Lost Sounds for winning the 2007 Grammy Award for Best Historical Album. Hopefully this recognition will allow the music and its message to be more widespread.

Again, not much can be added to what has been written; the significance of this CD cannot be overlooked. I've been fortunate to have been exposed to a wide variety of music since childhood, but Lost Sounds is unlike anything I had previously heard. It's a great piece of history that offers a new perspective on music as a whole. I still can't get over the fact that some of these recordings have survived over one hundred years - despite the disposable age we seem to live in.

No matter what your musical tastes, Lost Sounds deserves a listen - especially to the history aficionado.

5 out of 5 stars equal parts fascination and revulsion.......2006-07-07

There's not too much I can say that hasn't already been mentioned in the previous review, but I felt a need to add to (or help start) the chorus of praise for this collection.
As a fan of country blues and songster material (often predating country blues) this collection has been a real eye-opener. While I've heard some minstrel material from Jim Jackson, Pink Anderson, and some early blues players, this collection shows just how much more disturbing the minstrel tradition could be.
I suppose this album is best described as bittersweet; it contains some breathtaking music in a variety of genres, (the earliest examples I've ever heard of blues, jazz, gospel, minstrelsy, and the astounding vocal groups). However, it is in some of the self-defacing subject matter where the abhorant racism of the times left its audible mark the most (sometimes making songs difficult to listen to). That said, I truly believe that this is material to be embraced and understood; so as to both appreciate the artistry of it, and to ensure that such horrendous persecution does not occur again; if approached in this light, "Lost Sounds" is a true landmark for which listeners owe Archeophone records their sincerest thanks (and/or dollars). I honestly believe that any person with interests in black music created in the U.S. over the past century, or modern history for that matter, should not be without this collection.
It never ceases to astound me how something so beautiful can be quite so disturbing at the same time, but I'm so thankful I have had the chance to be disturbed at all.

5 out of 5 stars Priceless documents in context.......2006-01-05

I read Tim Brooks' book Lost Sounds soon after it came out. Both early recordings and pre-jazz African-American music have been interests of mine for a while now, and Brooks' book is an invaluable work on both. This companion double CD set, used either as aural illustration for the book or by itself, is equally invaluable.

As Brooks readily admits, many of these sounds were forgotten and nearly extinguished because of their discomforting nature. Many of the black performers before 1922 engaged in one sort of "tomming" or another. The recording industry was a whites-only business, and only those artists who appealed to whites in some way got recorded at this time. Thus these recordings can't be taken as representative of the music African-Americans made for their own enjoyment.

The variety of styles and approaches in the black music recorded in the 90's, aughts, and teens reflects the variety of ideas and approaches to black self-representation in these times. From dignified gospel styles to minstrel songs, from sentimental ballads to the startling proto-jazz of Jim Europe, Ford Dabney and Wilbur Sweatman, every expression of black artists was necessarily related to political or social ideals and realities. The CDs not only present this wide variety of material, but the 58-page notes help draw out the social significance of each type of recording.

Rather than proceeding chronologically, the contents are divided roughly into four sections, Vocal Harmonies, Minstrel and Vaudelville Traditions, Aspirational Motives, and Dance Rhythms. Except for the last section which focuses on later instrumentals, there is a good deal of overlap between the sections, but this only helps illustrate the overlaps in the traditions.

The sound quality, while never hi-fi, is amazing considering the sources. Some of the best people in the early-sound restoration field contributed their efforts and it shows. I know from experience just how difficult it is to get all the sound out of an early recording. All involved deserve a big hand.

My one complaint with the package is the inclusion at the beginning of the Minstrel notes of a noxious quote from Stanley Crouch dismissing all rap music as new minstrelsy aimed at white audiences. Brooks is aware that the politics of self-representation among early 20th Century African-Americans were extremely complex. How he could fail to see that they still are complex, and how he could miss the blinding upper-class bias of Crouch, is beyond me. It's possible the quote was supposed to be a demonstration of the continuing complexity of these politics, but it appears to be just an endorsement of Crouch's ignorance.

5 out of 5 stars "UHP! I'M AN IDIOT.".......2007-04-16

The last time I went home to Los Angeles - (You remember, I told you THAT story in my review for the Huffy Good Vibrations Men's 24-Inch Cruiser Bike. Are you paying attention here, or not?) - I called the BITTER BROTHERS and arranged a "Bitter Breakfast." That's a meeting where a bunch of us macho fellas - er, I mean, "Men" - get together to blow off steam over quiche and champagne. Uhm, that is, over Huevos Rancheros and strong, black coffee. (Let's be honest, the "blowing off steam" part could just as easily be called "Male Gossip", but . . . well, you know, I've faked a pretty good masculine facade for myself at Ammyland up to this point, and I'd hate to see it all go to ruin now.)

So, me an' my Bitter Bros were expressing our bitterness at The Sidewalk Café on Venice Beach one morning (perhaps the definitive "L.A. Experience") and observing the Frisbee-catching dogs, the rays-catching one-eighth dressed roller-skating babes, and the usual Carnival of Human Freaks parading past the Café, when I noticed this young cat playing some pretty fancy guitar over yonder. My soul emptied of its bitterness, and my glass emptied of its champa - my cup emptied of its coffee - I went to talk to the young cat and learned that he was a Russian bloke named VADIM, and I bought one of his self-produced compact discs. ["Vadim #1"; vadimrecords at yahoo dot com, or (310) 801-4212]

Well, I eventually just went crazy for track three: "Bossa-Nova." And having heard the term about a zazillion times (that's a lot!), I decided I simply must find out just what BOSSA NOVA really is. So I did an internet search and what I learned is that I have been in love with Bossa Nova music for pretty much my entire life without ever knowing it. {*He's a tad slow, folks, but give him four and a half decades and he'll figure it out.*}

You see, as a young kid in the early and mid-1960s, when the Bossa Nova craze was at its zenith, my Grandpa used to play it around his house. My Ma had an 8-Track tape (yeah, I'm bitter AND old, OK?) containing the gorgeously haunting song "The Shadow Of Your Smile." I loved it, and the song still makes me think of her. Wait a second. . . . . {*"Macho fellas" don't get teary-eyed, Stephen!*} . . . . Sorry. OK. Then later, in my mid-20s, I owned the classic Jazz album "Getz/Gilberto" on licorice pizza (that's LP, not 8-Track!) and I played the hell out of it (well, I would have if there had been any hell in it), falling in love with the beautiful saudade in Astrud Gilberto's voice. (Saudade? Look it up on Wikipedia.) Only Karen Carpenter's voice was infused with more, and - in my op - the standard ballads by Bobby Darin are the only example of Saudade in a male voice. (Despite the jocular exterior, my entire life is one of Saudade, but I don't know you well enough to tell you more.)

Then love came to me again in the form of Pat Metheny's three brilliant Brazilian-influenced albums, "The First Circle", "Still Life Talking", and "Letter From Home." About the same time, I owned a Cannonball Adderley album that included "Clouds" and "Morning Of The Carnival" and they were my favorite cuts, but I couldn't have told you why exactly. I also loved Vince Guaraldi's "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" from his "Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus" album, but the Bossa Nova connection eluded me. And when my Good Friend Melanie gave me Angelique Kidjo's "Black Ivory Soul" recording, I loved it immediately from the first few notes down to the very last ones, and I rarely embrace new music that quickly. But I still hadn't made the Bossa Nova Connection. It took a Russian cat playing Brazilian music on Venice Beach to make this American dude finally realize that the thread running through it all has always been Bossa Nova, and that Bossa Nova is the thing I dig! Hey, it required only 43 years for me to piece it all together; I'm just a mental dynamo! {*"Uhp! He's an idiot."*}

So, I just bought "BOSSA NOVA FOR LOVERS", and here's my assessment of each of its 16 tracks:

1. VIVO SONHANDO: Classic! I remember this one from my Getz/Gilberto album. Stan was one of the first major Jazz cats I got into.
2. WAVE: Wow! I've just learned that Antonio Carlos Jobim is the musician who transformed Samba into Bossa Nova.
3. THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE: [Sniffle! Sniffle!] I want Astrud to sing this one at my funeral.
4. CORCOVADO: Not the version from the Getz/Gilberto set, but nice guitar from Almeida, and Getz really plays that tenor sax! {*Yeah, but can he pitch?*}
5. MY FOOLISH HEART: Marry me, Astrud! I promise I can learn to behave myself!
6. AMOR EM PAZ: Sheesh! Talk about Saudade. Love it!
7. MISTY ROSES: Makes me misty. Astrud, play Misty for me.
8. DESAFINADO: Jobim is the Boss of Nova.
9. SO NICE (SUMMER SAMBA): Oh, gee, I swear, I melt. One of my very favorite tracks. Too short! More! More!
10. WINTER MOON: "Winter" warms my heart. "Great Getz!"
11. INSENSATEZ: Well, let's face it, along with "The Girl From Ipanema", this is the face of Bossa Nova.
12. DINDI: Astrud sings. What else ya need to know?
13. BAHIA: Cool!
14. THE GIRL FROM IPANEMA: I prefer the version with Getz and Astrud, of course, but great melody regardless.
15. O GRANDE AMOR: Beautiful!
16. MEDITATION: I dunno; let me contemplate it further.

I see that I used the word "love" seven times in this review. I don't ordinarily use that kind of language, but the collection IS called "BOSSA NOVA FOR LOVERS", and I guess I'm a lover after all. {*Nah. He's an idiot.*}

3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2006-11-05

A little too many instrumental music only songs, but otherwise good compilation of popular bossa nova love songs. Although, I would highly recommend Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour if you like the collection on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Listened to it at a friends house.......2006-03-19

I don't have any Bossa Nova music, except for the Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour, so when I listened to this CD at my friends house I knew I had to get it. It gives you a good representation of the classic Bossa Nova. Good variety of songs by the traditional performers. It is also great soft music to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2005-09-17

The music on this album is smooth and inviting. The perfect music to play as a background for a cocktail party - or for intimate moments with the one you love. Even in the coldest temperatures, this album will warm you up!

5 out of 5 stars Smooth, melodic, intimate.......2003-02-10

Outstanding collection of romantic tracks from the giants of Verve's roster. No surprises really among the selections, but who wants a jarring surprise in the middle of a romantic interlude? This set goes down so nicely it won't matter that you may have most these tracks in so many other anthologies.

5 out of 5 stars Dos ritmos, una música.......2006-10-06

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection.......2006-08-24

Like others, I was skeptical when I heard about the idea, but this collection easily won me over. What I find so interesting is that the arrangements are so good, so creative, it's as though these well-known classical pieces were *written* as Cuban music. You find yourself completely accepting this genre-bending experiment.

Extremely enjoyable -- as is their companion album, "Jazz Meets Cuba".

4 out of 5 stars Unlikely Crossover of Cuban Beats with Familiar Classics Yields Mostly Zingy Confection.......2005-12-28

Crossover efforts are always risky ventures that dance precariously between creative and contrived. There is definitely some of the latter on this 2002 recording, but surprisingly, far more of the former as the fruitful teaming of three German classical-jazz musicians and a pair of Cuban percussionist/vocalists puts a hearty Latin-flavored spin on some very familiar classics. Two of the Klazz Brothers, pianist Tobias Forster and bassist Killian Forster, took a fortuitous trip to Cuba and concluded the popular classical pieces they usually played could easily be adapted to the Cuban- and Afro-Cuban Jazz styles.

The beat-heavy results bear them out, as they developed fresh, energetic and lyrical arrangements of standard works by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Chopin, Schubert and others, that still respect the original compositions. The jazzed-up titles aptly (if a bit too preciously) reflect the changes - Mozart's Symphony No. 40 transforms into "Mambozart", Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 becomes "Salsa No. V", and Bizet's Carmen Suite turns into "Carmen Cubana". With titles like those, some of the pieces, perhaps because of their familiarity, come across as a bit too trite, for example, "Afrolise", which sounds bit too cocktail loungey to be too revitalizing a take on Beethoven's "Für Elise", and "Guten Abend", which sounds a bit like a somnambulant Vince Guaraldi take on Brahms's original lullaby.

However, the high points are abundant, starting with the three movements of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 "Pathétique," exciting pieces that feel culturally transformed by the sultry romanticism of the Cuban beats crowned by Tobias Forster's virtuoso playing. Also wonderful are the mournful "Czardas" and the conga-accentuated "Flight of the Bumblebee", both dominated by brother Killian's dexterous bass playing. The three others in the quintet are all equally superb musicians - Tim Hahn, the third Klazz Bother on drums, and Alexis Herrera Estevez (timbales) and Elio Rodriguez (congas), both of Cuba Percussion. The vital mix of sounds in what could have been a hopeless misfire makes for a genuinely exhilarating listening experience.

4 out of 5 stars A unique piece of mixed classic/jazzy/south-american music .......2005-07-28

A unique piece of mixed classic/jazzy music which matches wonderfully in my collection. It is trully remarkable to discover the full classical music-education of these performers, which brings them to make this wonderful CD of high-standard music.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, but need to try harder..........2005-03-27

I found this CD after watching "Collateral". The music sounds very interesting when classic melodies blended with swing and jazz. But they sticked to the originial notes too much. I wish they could have created more variations and improvisation. Also, in this "Classic Meets Cuba" CD, the Cuba part needs to be emphasized more (putting them into a central stage in some tracks; the solo in the Fur Elise track is a good example) rather than treating the percussion beats as peripheral background. Taking the advantage of these vivid beats could further set the musicians free from the original notes. Overall, this is a good CD and is perfect for smooth jazz lover. Hope they can try harder and do more in their up-coming new release-Jazz Meets Cuba.

Oh Julie, the songs you sang on this CD are superb. I wish you could still give us that joy. If you can only sing in the low registers, give us jazz!! You can do it I just know you can!!

2 out of 5 stars Pretty Sad, .......2005-10-27

Hollywood veteran Julie Andrews has had a glorious career, but not without its downsides. Her legend is built on "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" and other glorious roles. Her abilities as a singer were never impressive or great, her voice often sounded weak, but she always knew how to sing around her very limited vocal range. On this collection she performs some of the greatest Broadway tunes ever written and even though she does a good job, her voice just doesn't hold up against many of these tunes. Her warmth is felt all over the album, in "Here I'll Stay" she wraps her gentle, but narrow, voice around it and in "My Funny Valentine" she sticks to the lower register of her voice. However, in the re-recording of her classic "Sound of Music" and in "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" her voice fails her, it often sounds thin and airy and it's actually quite sad to listen to. When all is said and done Julie Andrews remains a great talent, and most of that talent is largely due to her amazing capability as a performer and her genuine warmth.

5 out of 5 stars I FELL IN LOVE WITH JULIE ALL OVER AGAIN.......2005-06-25

As a young kid growing up in the Philippines I remember my Dad playing his state-of-the-art Aiwa tape recorder back in the 60s and hearing Julie Andrews' voice - truly the voice of an angel! Now, hearing these songs again with adult ears I fell in love with her voice all over again !

5 out of 5 stars A Great Julie Andrews CD.......2002-01-27

If you are a fan of Dame Julie's and musicals, this is the cd for you. It is a compilation of songs from prevously released albums; The King and I, The Music of Richard Rodgers, Here I'll Stay, and Victor/Victoria, Original Broadway Cast Recording.
I found the material to be very well put together giving the listener selections from My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Sound of Music, Victor/Victoria and others. What more could you want?
As for Ms. Andrews, she is superb. There is simply no one like her. I have heard comments that prior to the infamous throat surgery she was unable to handle the difficult material and hit those high notes. This is just not true. All you have to do is listen to these songs recorded in the early 90's to know that she still had a marvelous voice. Lets hope that one day she will be able to sing and record again. If not, these may be her last recordings so treasure them.

The My Fair Lady suite is wonderful and Ms. Andrews definitely hit the high note at the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night".
Her version of "Edelweiss" and "The Sound of Music" are lovely.
Also worth listening to is "Living in the Shadows" written for the Broadway production of Victor/Victoria so you won't find it on the movie soundtrack. The lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse who also penned "Crazy World", which is another great selection on this cd.

Overall this is a cd worth having in your collection, so buy it today. Otherwise you are missing out.

(many years ago). I admire her talent and her voice on this CD. I know it is not as clear a voice as she used to have but I still enjoy listening to her. I listen to this CD when I want a "pick me up" and am proud to have it as part of my collection.

More than practically any other African musician, King Sunny Ade has enjoyed unparalleled longevity, both at home and with Western music fans. Born into Nigerian royalty (the "King" is not merely a courtesy title), he embarked upon his chosen career path early, incorporating traditional rhythms and percussion, chilled-out vocals, sinuous bass lines, and especially the wacked-out, psychedelic guitar of Bob Ohiri. During the '60s and '70s, Ade's mature sound slowly evolved; although he was years away from an international breakthrough, his trademark stylistic markers were already in place, hastening him toward historic doings. The bandleader's high, nasal voice, wreathed in talking drums and shakers, echoed by a call-and-response choir, reflected Yoruba folkways along with hints of Muslim and Christian religious and secular music. By now, Ade's songs had become longer and more subtle; many of his intricate, gradually unfolding sets of themes and variations were clocking in at twenty minutes-plus on record and over an hour live. As on Shanachie's excellent Best of the Classic Years (2003), these tunes, although unquestionably landmark recordings, have hardly been heard outside of the maestro's homeland. They constitute a crucial document of Ade's first flush of local fame, and if the sound quality is slightly over-resonant, it is also remarkably vivid and clear. --Christina Roden

Since the late '70s the Cheap Suit Serenaders--an ever-changing group of hardcore 78-collecting friends--have been playing what they love--old-time jazz, folk, string-band, Hawaiian, and ragtime music. Best known for having two of the best comix artists ever in their lineup--Robert Armstrong and R. Crumb--the Cheap Suits aren't slouches in the instrument-proficiency department (Armstrong's musical saw ended up on the One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest soundtrack, and occasional bandmate Bob Brozman has made an entire career out of touring and playing music). On Chasin' Rainbows, some of the group's finest moments are captured. Classic songs like "Persian Rug" and the title track are played alongside CSS originals like "Fine Artiste Blues." You'll never hear these fun tunes (usually relegated to CD compilations of 78s) played in a higher fidelity, nor will you probably hear them this spirited. A great resurrection of lost music by a group of guys dedicated to the stuff. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Just terrific........2007-01-30

Although I do love this album, I have one question. Recently, I found an untitled album of R. Crumb's in my iTunes library. I have absolutely no idea what it is. There are 19 tracks and the first one is 3 minutes and 24 seconds long. If anyone can help me out in trying to figure this out, I'd really appreciate it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic and funky.......2006-11-10

This is another great CD from Mr. Crumb et al. I am so thankful that people are still playing this music at all, let alone with the style and grace these guys have. You'll laugh and you'll marvel at the musicianship, and the vocals go perfectly with it. Their next one was even better with the addition of genius Bob Brozman. Get both!

4 out of 5 stars Even more incredible than the last one!!.......2005-08-31

R. Crumb and the Cheap Suit Serenaders were an "old timey" band fronted by the legendary underground cartoonist. This CD is a reissue of their second album, originally titled "Number Two". The four band members are clearly having fun here, without taking themselves too seriously. They are playing the kind of music they like, and having a blast doing it. While they aren't really professional musicians, what they lack in technical ability, they make up for in enthusiasm. If you enjoy "old timey" music, you will enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Sure to get the toe to tappin'........2002-02-07

I'm a big fan of indie-rock and avante-garde jazz, but I can't deny a serious affinity for good down-home music like this. This band of misfits, dorks and comic-book geeks has got the right idea when it comes to playin' some 'toons (pun intended). The atmosphere of this music is silly, goofy, slightly perverse and deeply sincere. If you liked the music from "Oh Brother where art thou", but thought the movie was inauthentic and a bit shallow, you should give this a listen. This is the real deal.

5 out of 5 stars IT WAS ABOUT TIME!.......2001-09-01

Finally, some REAL music. It had been a long time since I had heard such sincere and rustic musical farcities. Although Robert Crumb is "way out there", his handling of his short stab at the music game proves that if you have a dream, you can"t be all bad. Nice cello parts from Terry Zwigoff. "Persian Rug" has got to be one of the best of the best. Buy it, you'll like it!

5 out of 5 stars superlative.......2004-02-04

This is my favorite Phil Coulter CD. I love this collection of popular Irish music that starts with a memorable rendition of "Danny Boy" and continues with charming melodies to the last song. I wish every CD could be this good.

5 out of 5 stars The most beautiful music that is so very romantic and free!.......1999-11-04

Whether driving through the mountains with the top down, the beauty of the scenery and the feel of the music blending is breathtaking. On the beach with the mist in the air, the sunset and music fills the heart. I am married, 56 yrs old, and Phil Coulter makes you so aware of yourself and the beauty surrounding you. This was my first album and my favorite. I am now trying to replace the tapes with the cd's.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Coulter with emphasis on his compostions.......1999-06-26

In this album Coulter shows his vocal abilities on selections he composed - they are hauntingly lovely and he sings them a bit like Rod McKuen used to . This is one of my favorite Coulter albums and he is my favorite artist.

In the late '70s the Cheap Suit Serenaders--fronted by comix legend Robert Crumb but also featuring fellow old-time music artistes Robert Armstrong, Bob Brozman, Al Dodge, Tom Marion, and Terry Zwigoff (who would later produce a whole film on Crumb)--were the only group around who would even think about still producing 78s. After all, that's where all their favorite music came from. Those platters are now highly collectible, but their albums live on, reissued on CD. Singing in the Bathtub collects some of their best work--humorous originals such as "Suits Crybaby Blues" and plenty of covers of tunes from obscure 78s. Their playing is flawless (you probably haven't heard the steel guitar, banjo mandolin, or musical saw played with such virtuosity as here), the tunes are mostly fun and spirited, and the music styles are varied. In the hands of the Cheap Suits, old-time music is alive and well. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I wish there were 6 stars.......2006-11-10

This is a great interpretation of some old treasures. The first (title) track will knock your socks off when Bob Brozman comes in with his Resophonic guitar. And there are some new(er) songs in the same vein, especially "Shopping Mall Blues". See also "Chasin' Rainbows". If you don't have both, take the buy-2 deal. You won't be sorry, except that you'll never get some of these out of your head.

4 out of 5 stars Singing in the shower's like singing in the rain........2005-08-31

R. Crumb and the Cheap Suit Serenaders were an "old timey" band fronted by the legendary underground cartoonist. This CD features their third (and last) album, originally titled "Number Three". On this album, the group was expanded from four members to six, which resulted in them having a "fuller" sound. The music here is a lot of fun and it's very well played. The CD is in mono, except for "My Gal Sal", which is inexplicably in stereo. If you enjoy "old timey" music, you will definitely enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars How can music so quaint "rock" so hard?.......2004-10-31

These guys tackled old time music with such enthusiasm, musical talent, and just plain "hep", this collection is entertaining without any sense of feeling like a museum piece. Their talent and pure love of music are unmistakable in the instrumentation and vocal work of these songs. If you think you are too cool to smile and sing along, maybe even dance around a little, then don't buy this cd.

5 out of 5 stars MAKES YOUR FEET TAP AND BRINGS A SMILE TO YOUR FACE!.......2003-12-17

An all too forgotten music brought back to life, by this amazing band of well humored and talented musicians. Find modern day albums are sufficently lacking in the playing of a saw?!! well search no further! This CD resurects instruments and music long past, but never out of style. Mr. Robert Crumb has certainly left his mark on this world in very unique ways :)

5 out of 5 stars "Sensitive guys who play old outdated tunes"; what a treat!.......2001-01-18

I have all three of the original vinyl LP albums and thought I'd never get to hear these wonderful tunes again when my turntable broke and I switched to CDs. Crumb & Company complain in their self-mocking Suits Crybaby Blues: "Nobody likes our music, they all want stuff that's loud". Whatever the market may be, this music makes my soul soar. It's not "Camp", that 60s fad where truly bad pop culture was held up as unconscious self-parody. These multi-talented, multimedia artists lovingly render these obscure, high-spirited and quaintly corny echoes from a more innocent era. Naive, a bit goofy, and even somewhat racist in an innocent way ( "Sing Song Girl" portrays cartoonish orientals)this music evokes the enthusiastic rowdiness of an America on a binge. Much like R. Crumb's comix, the stuff may be a bit politically incorrect and even grotesque, but it is raucously entertaining.
