Extremely fine singing, well-recorded........2006-12-01
In the first track you know you are in for a treat with this disc.
Kiehr's soprano voice is just right for this repertoire: Appropriately
light yet full of color, with exquisite control and just the right
amount of vibrato (i.e. not too much, but enough to feel relaxed).
You will smile when listening to this disc.
Bass-baritone MacLeod is an ample match to Kiehr, and indeed the blend
between the two singers is ideal. The instrumental accompaniment is
sprightly and clean, but so well recorded that one does not sense any
unpleasant edge to the sound. Special mention must be made of the very
fine lute playing here, and it's luscious blend with Kiehr's enchanting
voice.
This is not earth-shaking music. It's just fun, beautiful, and extremely
well-performed and well-recorded. Heartily recommended.

Lives up to the reviews.......2006-03-11
This recording has gotten extremely positive reviews, and I feel
that it more than lives up to them. The Concerto Italiano plays with extreme sensitivity, and with unparalleled sweetness. Everything about their handling of accents and phrases really *is* unlike others'. They tend to linger in the moment, especially the violins, and announce the beauty of moment after moment. This is definitely not for everyone, understandably, and if you are in a musical hurry, this is decidedly not the recording for you. But if you would rather sip a glass of wine than gulp a beer, I think this might just be the merlot you've been looking for.

WOW! What Fun!!.......2006-09-10
How do you describe Red Priest? Wow! Is a start. They are masters of their instruments and know the pieces inside and out. They bring fun and freshness to classical music. They play with tempo and add all sorts of things that have not been done in classical music. The improvisation/embellishment in the music is fantastic. The witches cackling in the Witches dance is one of the favorites for my kids. They love this CD and ask for it over and over again. If you like music played straight (boring) with no embellishment or interpretation from the musician, then this is not for you. If you like fun, fresh, exciting renditions, then this is the one for you!
Playful Gothic madness.........2006-08-10
Those crazy Red Priest guys have done it again, making a wonderfully fun and playful disc of thrash-baroque. This small group really tears up the score. I can imagine that Red Priest would be a riot to see live.
I haven't heard any of the pieces played by a 'straight' ensemble, so I can't comment, but I highly suspect these guys of taking some outrageous liberties. But you have to go with the flow here to get your reward from this romp.
Many of the tracks are not played at the breakneck speed of 'Priest on the Run', but just so's you know, some are. The gothic theme works well, even if it may be a little of a stretch for some of the pieces. When the music slows, you feel as though it is trying to creep up behind you so it can jump out and go 'Boo!' An album that I'd hate to meet in a dark alleyway.
This is not for everybody, but anyone who aspires to the baroque mosh-pit, this is it!

Superb. Evocative. Moody. A wonderful stretch for the music lover who is looking for something different, and is intrigued by the capabilities of the cello when used in avant garde, impressionistic music. This is an eye/ear opener.
The best of contemporary symphonic composers are now Canadians. Malcolm Forsythe leads the way. America are you listening? Check Alexina Louie, et al.

If it were a matter of the recorded sound only, this 1986 effort from London's Abbey Road studios would score full marks: everything here is very directly and clearly captured, and the balance between the instruments is perfect. But unfortunately the playing is as direct and relentless as the sound, leaving little or no room for nuances and making one wonder why Arcangelo Corelli was so famous in his day. The CD appears to have been London Baroque's first attempt at Corelli's sonatas and offers a selection from all six of his published works: two sonatas each from opus 1 and 2 respectively, one sonata each from opus 3, 4 and 5 and a somewhat mutilated solo version of the concerto grosso opus 6, no. 5: Corelli is known to have played these pieces with quite large forces, but he also made provision for them to be played as trio sonatas. London Baroque were not satisfied with Corelli's chamber version, however, and restored the viola and the violone from the larger concerto, which may be legitimate as far as the sound goes but surely can no longer be called 'historical performance practice'. The group later recorded all of the sonatas from opus 1 through 4 on 4 Cds for Harmonia Mundi, and as these have been re-released at budget price, budding Corelli fans should turn there rather than to this forerunner. If price is no object, the recordings by the Purcell Quartet on Chandos Chaconne would probably be an even better choice.

Friedrich really fires things up on this CD! He plays some unbelievable things on this disc, which has The Honnegger Intrada, Hindemith Sonate, Stravinsky Fanfare for a New Theatre, and other really hard tunes. He really gets it out front on every track!
