Some of the music on this series is so weird and beautiful that the composers should be grateful that it is released here. They should think of this series as a sampler which might atract us, the general public, into further investigation of their work, which we most probably would have never had the chance to hear it or become aware of its existence or of the composers/artists. Don't be so greedy... for I believe you have been done a favor. The same goes for the other volumes of this series. TWO THUMBS UP!

Early 70s French vocal pop.......2003-12-21

This is a collection of French ballads and pop songs by the famous chanteuse of the sensual Je T'Aime (Moi Non Plus). There are three duets with Serge Gainsbourg - the aforementioned classic plus La Décadanse and 69 Année Erotique, while Gainsbourg had a hand in writing and/or arranging most of the tracks.

The opening number Quoi was the theme of the TV series Cinecitta and the breathy English song Yesterday Yes A Day comes from the soundtrack of the film Madame Claude. In the song Ex Fan Des Sixties, Birkin lists her favorite pop stars, including The Birds, The Doors and Jim Morrison, The Moody Blues, The Animals, the individual Beatles, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin and T. Rex.

Je Taime is of course a gem and none of the other attempts at eroticism equals its timeless appeal. My favorites include the tuneful numbers La Décadanse, Mon Amour Baiser, Fuir Le Bonheur and Ballade De Johnny-Jane. Those who like late sixties and early seventies vocal pop like Mary Hopkin, Françoise Hardy and the early, folky Marianne Faithfull will enjoy the work of Jane Birkin.

With the exception of those I have mentioned, most songs unfortunately lack catchy tunes, rendering them less than memorable. But this album is still a pleasant listening experience and it is great to finally hear some of the other work of the moaning singer of Je T'Aime!

THE BEST OF GAINSBOURG WITH JANE.......2000-10-19

If you like GAINSBOURG, this record is worth buying because most of the best songs with JANE are there.It includes the funny RACCROCHEZ C'EST UNE ERREUR in which a sex maniac calls a woman and gives her his fantasy talk;the alternate version of the classic JE T'AIME MOI NON PLUS, and the beautifully sad QUOI in which JANE'S charm is at her best.JANE is the most celebrated of the so called GAINSBOURG muses, and she first met SERGE while making the movie LA PISCINE in 1968.

A compser who deserves to better known in Europe.......2006-03-15

Howard Hanson (1896-1981) is one of the most popular composers of the 20th Century in the USA. He rejected the serialism and atonalism of his time and continuted writing warm, romantic, music long after it ceased to be fashionable among 'serious' composers, drawing strongly on his Nordic roots.

Sadly, he has never really established a reputation on this side of the Atlantic. If this fantastic twofer CD gets more of airing though, that could all change.

If people know anything by Hanson, it's most likely to be the Second Movement of the Second Symphony, which was used as the theme for the film Alien. The Second Symphony is his most popular piece with American audiences and with it's warm, rich, harmonies and many delightful passages, especially on horns, it's not hard to see why.

Three other symphonies are in this collection of which the outstanding one is the semi-choral Seventh, "A Sea Symphony".

A number of other pieces fill the CD, with the pick of the bunch being the deeply moving and clearly personal Elegy for Hanson's friend Serge Koussevitzky. Koussevitzky championed Hansons' music as chief conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone who likes late-romantic music (think of a warmer Sibelius or a mellower Mahler) or is interested in the music of the USA. I also hope that Hanson will start to get his due recognition in the concert halls of this continent

An Essential American Classic.......2002-05-26

Howard Hanson (1897-1981) was one of the most significant American composers of his generation. Unfortunately, he has been largely forgotten today as a result of the romantic style of his earlier music, and his refusal to adopt a more modern musical style in his later works. He has been called the American version of Rachmaninoff.

This excellent double-cd brings together some of Hanson's most loved symphonic works. The first: the Second Symphony ("Romantic") is perhaps his best-known work. But more importantly are some of the later works, better represented by the haunting Elegy (in memory of Koussevitsky), and the Fourth and Sixth Symphonies. The Fourth Symphony ("Requiem") is an incredible work, and the Sixth a tour-de-force that shows how in his later work Hanson had gone beyond neo-romanticism to forge a more modern style uniquely his own.

At his best, Hanson's music is forceful, profound, deeply human and vulnerable. If you are at all interested in Twentieth Century American symphonic works, you really must have this wonderful set from Delos. These are essential American classics, must have music. Even if your tastes are more for the avant garde stuff, you will still admire the depth of this composer's music.

I hadn't previously heard any of Hanson's music except for the "Romantic", but on the basis of that symphony I bought this double CD set. I'm glad I did! The music is wonderful and is brilliantly played and the "Romantic" is as arresting as ever. I can highly recommend this as an introduction to Hanson's music for anyone who likes classical music. It's from the 20th century, but it's as lovely and stirring as Schumann and Brahms!

Excellent mix from a rising star.......2007-03-19

Serge Devant is quickly moving up the DJ ranks and just recently found himself at #81 in the 2006 DJ Mag Top 100 poll. CD 1 & 2 are awesome, but CD 3 is down tempo ambient and was just not my style. It took a little bit for me to warm up to this compilation because I was new to dance music when I bought this, but now it is one of my favorite DJ cd's.

Able To Stand Out.......2005-12-14

Electronic music is becoming bigger and DJs are becoming super stars. With all the hype and promotion it gets difficult to sort through all the electronic releases to find something that will stand out or at least be good. This is where Exhibition 3 by Serge Devant comes in. Many New Yorkers already know Serge from his Crobar nights and recognize that the ticket for the ride is well worth the admission, so getting the mix is a no brainer here. Crobar residents include the likes of Sasha, Sander Klienenberg, Victor Calderone, Ferry Corsten and it is quite a big deal for Devant to enter the all star cast to spin at the club.
However all that aside, what about the mix itself? First CD is my favorite of all 3. Devant picks it up and never looks back from first to last track while making a mark with some of his own mixes as well as original releases. 2nd cd is just a solid, but mellows out a bit in the end, which would make sense considering that both cds combined are well over 2 hours of music, so it feels like a true Dj set.
The verdict: Devant is emerging as a true talent on the electronic scene and the mix is a testament to that.
