Whether in the large-scale Op. 6 Sonata and Variations Serieuses or the gentle yet cogently proportioned Songs Without Words, the indefatigable Martin Jones plays this music with assurance, insight, and a singing tone that never cloys. Moreover, Nimbus's rock-bottom price is hard to beat for customers wishing to acquire Mendelssohn's entire solo piano output in one fell swoop. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
Awesome!.......2006-09-21
This is an amazing collection of Mendelssohn's works! However, the recording is a little on the soft side, so you sort of need to crank your speakers, but all in all, it's a must have for collectors of classical music. Enjoy! Oh, and may I strongly suggest track 3 of disc 4 - it was my whole reason for buying this collection. The entire set is amazing, but that track is worth the price of admission.
very poor sound quality almost ruins it.......2006-07-04
This is no doubt to me great piano music played by a great performer. I can't find anything wrong with that. The only problem is the recording quality is very poor, almost intolerable at times. This was recorded in the early through late 70s. I disagree with the previous reviewer, the sound isn't crisp or clear at all, it's very staticy and recorded at a very low volume so you have to crank up the volume creating more static. It's also hard to hear how beautiful the piano really is. To confirm what one of the other reviewers said it does sound as if the piano is underwater. Too bad the recording was not cleaned up to sound at least a little better.
Even at the price I paid ($25)it still may be over priced. It is a great way to get all of his solo piano music but if you want quality skip this and spend the extra money.
Some of the Most Complex Music of the Period!.......2005-02-22
Mendelssohn's piano music is an amazing body of work and if you are a classical music fan who has not been exposed to it yet, this is a wonderful way to get his entire piano output. Nimbus has Marvin Jones( winner of the 1968 Myra Hess Award ) performing this for us, recorded in the 1970's. It is in ADD, which is what one would expect from that time, but the sound is very crisp and clear, with the microphone placement not extremely close to the piano, so as to capture the room acoustics. Mr. Jones plays with great brilliance, clarity, and enthusiasm, and, most importantly, he seems to capture the true spirit of Mendelssohn. The set is nicely packaged in two triple cases in a sleeve with a booklet.
An okay recording..........2003-07-03
For the price, you really can't find a real deal... but in a lot of places, it's obvious why the price is as low as it is. First of all, the recording is awfully muddy and the piano's tone suffers as a result, often sounding more like it's underwater than anything else.
The second thing is that the pianist makes a fair amount of mistakes in the music he is playing, some of them often grating, something that is unacceptable in a studio recording. But I'm still giving it a middle-of-the-road score because the performances aside from the mistakes are often quite good.

Customer Reviews:
Best collection of violin playing ever made.......2007-04-12
I am a professional violinist and have long been an admirer of Michael Rabin. His technic is beyond concern. I am familiar with people involved in these recordings. Amazingly, many were single, unedited takes. If you ever buy a violin recording, these are the ones to get.
I really can't add anything to the other reviews..........2007-01-07
...this collection is an absolute necessity to anyone enjoys violin music and a near necessity to anyone who enjoys classical music...what astounds me is the quality of many of the recordings...more often than not violin recordings seem to produce a sound that leaves the impression that you're listening from the back row in a large hall...most of Rabin's recordings, on the other hand, give the impression either he's right in the room with you or else you're in the front row at the concert.
An essential item for any classical collection.......2006-04-20
Rabin is spectacular!!! Just listen to his rendition of Zigeunerwiesen, he has no equal for this piece - not even close! I have been waiting for the re-release of this set for over 5 years, asking EMI if they would ever consider it. My thanks to EMI for listening. This is a re-release they wont regret. I have a collection of classical violin by many artists, but there is something very special about these recordings by Michael Rabin. His interpretations and the gusto of his playing take your breath away.
I cannot imagine any collection of classical music without this set of CDs.
Michael Rabin was INCREDIBLE.......2006-04-14
I have to second Scott68. Rabin was one incredible violinist. I agree, the Paganini Caprices (age 15!) Wieniawski and others were never topped by anyone! This set is guaranteed to drop your jaw.
A Fitting Tribute To The 20th Century's Greatest Violinist.......2006-04-01
If you don't have these CD's get them, you won't be disappointed, especially if you love the violin as I do. If you're a Rabin fan too then this small investment is money well spent. A better set of recordings of violin classics couldn't be found anywhere. Rabin quite simply was the greatest violinist of the 20th century, rivalling, and in some ways surpassing the venerable Heifetz. He was also known for his phenomenal virtuosity and 'voluptuos' tone somewhat reminiscent of Perlman.
This boxed set includes many of the virtuoso pieces that made him famous as well as more reflective pieces like Bach. Listen to these and judge for yourselves what a truly great violinist was Rabin.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting, and so cheap!.......2005-03-17
In response to the reviewer below, yes, some of the recordings do not have the best sound quality. But that's not what this is about, it's about great recordings of the century.
There are two discs, each with about 18 tracks, averaging about 4 minutes each, of excerpts and individual movements of the some of the most famous of the 150 "GROCs."
In the booklet it has a few interesting (sometimes not that interesting) facts about each of the 150 performances.
If you don't mind excerpts of pieces or isolated movements, this would be a worthwhile purchase, especially for the bizarrely reasonable price.
Not that great.......2004-11-19
If this is supposed to be an album of "the greatest" -- I wasn't too impressed. The quality didn't seem that good and the selections, well, not all that popular to my mind.

Exquisite and intelligent piano music.......2007-02-07
With so many recordings of the Violin Concerto, the Midsummer Night's Dream, and Italian symphony, how often do we get a chance to explore Mendelssohn's piano compositions? It is rare that we find a pianist championing even the war-horses like the Variations serieuses or the Rondo capriccioso. For five volumes, however, Naxos has decided to enlist Benjamin Frith's pianism for recording Mendelssohn's piano works. I can tell from this first volume that Mendelssohn's piano compositions are unfairly neglected. And this disc is not even the best representation of Mendelssohn's keyboard powers. Nevertheless, there is nothing abhorrent, distasteful, or even banal to be found here.
The Six Preludes and Fugues Op. 35 are perhaps one of the best bridges between Beethoven's and Franck's fugues. In the days when miniatures and etudes were replacing the old fugue, Mendelssohn proves that it's still propitious to pour musical ideas into this ancient mold. I can confidently declare that all six of these are worth concentrated listenings. If I were to pick the three best, I would say No. 1, 3 and 6 are the most fantastic and inspired. No. 1 is indeed the most popular, and if it wasn't for Murray Perahia's mindblowing performance of this, I could praise Benjamin Frith's interpretation; unfortunately, his playing of the fugue is incomparable to Perahia's duality of expressive power and clarity of voicing. To be fair, Frith does a tremendous job with No. 6; the most gorgeous prelude of them all resides here. A couple of hearings makes it clear, in my mind, that there is an originality in all of these fugues. Each fugue theme is of a different characteristic: some are daring in length and others are simple and short; some are rapidly fast and others lugubriously slow. Ultimately, the Op. 35 remains Mendelssohn's great trophy of piano composition. Although not nearly on par with Beethoven's sublime fugues, Mendelssohn's seek to revive the glorious potential of the polyphonic genre and showcase new Romantic ideas as well. Even though I slighted Frith's execution of the No. 1 in E minor, it's only because I prefer Perahia's fire. Frith's playing is still admirable, virtuosic and immaculate; he never smears the fugal voices either.
The Op. 33 Caprices are rather strange in their design. Each one consists of a hefty 8 minutes and they are schizophrenic in mood; indeed, they are capricious "caprices." Take No. 1 in A minor: it starts out absolutely beautiful with its haunting arpeggios, but then a frisky rhythmic idea takes over and the piece becomes a Presto agitato. For 8 minutes, Mendelssohn sustains new melodies and introduces new ideas as if they were improvised. The first Caprice is a wholly attractive one, dramatic but always conservative. The second Caprice is slightly subdued in its emotional content at first. But there are several brief moments in this fantasy that are startlingly passionate; some sound reminiscent of Beethovian "Sturm und Drang." The third and last Caprice is another dichotomy of beautiful and brooding music combined with agitated sections that seem unsure where to go. As fantasies, the Op. 33 are devoid of recurring themes, but still manage to appeal to the ears because of Mendelssohn's penchant for almost constantly pouring out brief melodious ideas. The last piece on the disc, the Perpetuum mobile Op. 119, is a scherzo-like flurry of scintillating notes; I could not hum the tune for you if I tried, but it's still endearing for its sprightly nature.
Bottom line: Those seeking to explore Mendelssohn's piano music for the first time should seek Perahia's recording on CBS masterworks. However, the Mendelssohn aficionado or curious pianophile will find this recording worthwhile. It's a fascinating glimpse into Mendelssohn's pianistic style. I guarantee these preludes and fugues are among the best of the 19th century. The caprices are also interesting diversions. Since this music possesses sophistication and elegance, you will be hard-pressed to find drama or bursting emotions. That warning will either be relieving or repellant, but at this Naxos price, why not explore anyway?

Customer Reviews:
More delightful gems from Mendelssohn's piano oeuvre.......2007-02-09
So far Naxos's previous two volumes have been consistent in quality and I'm happy to announce that the third volume brings some hidden treasures to the spotlight. Mendelssohn's solo piano works tend to be unknown. With the exception of the famous Variations serieuses and the Rondo capriccioso, it's difficult to find anything else of his recorded nowadays; you certainly won't find any of these on a recital disc. Admittedly, these works are light, restrained, and mostly in the Classical mold. But there are some fantastic obscurities here that showcase Mendelssohn's marvelous talents for piano composition.
When someone mentions a piano sonata in B flat major Op. 106, I can only think of one: Beethoven's Hammerklavier. It's unfathomable to think of another sonata with this title. What are the odds of another sonata in B flat major that just happens to be an Op. 106? Since the work was posthumously published, it certainly wasn't deliberate on Mendelssohn's side. Even more peculiar is the first Allegro movement which actually does resemble the first movement of the Hammerklavier; it's almost a petite version of it. This movement is purely inspired by Beethoven and still fresh with delightful Classical ideas. The Andante movement is stunningly beautiful. These four minutes contain one of Mendelssohn's loveliest streams of melodies and modulations. The last movement is just as engaging, with gorgeous arpeggios and frolicking rhythms. In my estimation, this work is a magnificent example of Mendelssohn's competence with the piano forms.
The three Caprices from the Op. 16 are interesting diversions. The first and third have their moments but are predominately restrained, with occasional build ups of passion. The most outstanding of them all is the second, a 3 minute scherzo with a virtuosic and powerful middle section. More remarkable is the Album-Leaf in E minor. This contains a unique and inspired theme. His Romanticism shows a little more here than in the Sonata. I think this Album-Leaf is one of the best gems on this recording, in fact. It possesses abundantly beautiful ideas, all concisely stated, reaching graceful tension and then resolving itself mysteriously. Perhaps an even more original piece is the ravishing Andante cantabile e Presto agitato in B major. Mendelssohn has an affinity for combining these tempo markings together: andante and presto. He is always introducing a radiant stream of alluring melodies and then transforming them into a splash of impassioned ideas. With typical Classicism, Mendelssohn explores an array of emotions, delicate and reserved, but always angelic. It only took me a few listenings to believe that this 8 minute work is worthy of more attention.
The Variations in E flat major is an unusual composition because it consists of only five variations on a single extended theme. It does not measure up to the divine Variations serieuses, but it is still a glorious set of variations resplendent in typical Mendelssohnian fancy and artistry. I find the theme itself rather banal, but Mendelssohn's gifts for improvisation certainly aid him here. He efficiently turns this simple music into an opulent, stylish and tasteful presentation. Perhaps saving the best for last, Naxos and Frith have recorded a decent Rondo capriccioso. I confess that I much prefer Perahia when it comes to Mendelssohn's piano works. While Frith plays this with finesse and excellent technique, the exhilarating drive and Romantic feeling found in Perahia's delivery are unfortunately absent. The Rondo is assuredly the best composition on this disc, but I didn't pay it more than one hearing because of the attention I think these other rarities deserve.
Bottom line: I think the Sonata Op. 106 will delight any who buy this; the Op. 16 Caprices and the Album-Leaf are superlative gems and prove that Mendelssohn's piano works deserve more championship. Beginners to Mendelssohn shouldn't start here, but for those who love to explore obscure piano compositions from major composers, I whole-heartedly recommend this disc.
