Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Very pleasant music, but sorry, this doesn't really do it for me.......2006-10-24

I bought this disc partly because I am enjoying exploring different types of dance music, and was influenced by the reviews below. Which is why I'm writing this review, even at the risk of seeming like a heathen.

The disc is pleasant enough, but I don't listen to it very much and I was very dissapointed when I first heard it. The problem is partly because of my expectations - I had supposed and hoped it would be more.. dynamic. Although there are some fine tunes here, I find myself irritated that many of them are actually so gentle that they are hard to hear properly unless you turn the volume way up. There are a few more lively ones in the selection, but overall I found the disc to have a soporific effect.

All right, all right, it's my subjective criticism, and I've said too much, but I felt I needed to balance out the reviews below.

5 out of 5 stars Follow the Five Star Trail.......2005-07-23

Having been familiar with the works of ALK and The Harp Consort for some years, I was surprised that this bit of "the divine" passed me by. Courtesy of some of the more ecstatic reviewers below, I took a chance and ordered this disc. They are right. So beware: The music insinuates itself into your being. It may not make you a better person, but life can seem better after a bit of this uniquely tranquil, yet spirited, music.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, beautiful, sublime!.......2004-08-15

This is one of my favorite Classical albums. The approach to the music by King's ensemble is definitive. What do I mean? King's approach is as definitive as Bohm is to Mozart, as Dorati is to Haydn, and as Karajan is to Beethoven. (Perhaps a better comparison would be those great David Munrow recordings of the 1970s.) Frankly, I have never heard a better program of early music than this. These performances excite, challenge, and invigorate the imagination!

The recording is of demonstration quality. It really is splendid--that "in-the-room-with-you" feeling.

Now the unbelivable part: I found this CD sealed in a bin marked "99 cents" in a store that specialized in rap and jazz! (I go to this store for jazz bargains.) My point: whatever you pay for this CD, it's worth it!

5 out of 5 stars The most beautiful music in the world.......2004-05-19

I listen to this music day in day out..and never tire. It is confirmation of Shaw's theory of world history, which states that the high point of western culture was 1906, and that we are now evolving in reverse: the great beautiful music lies in the past. Modern music is a wasteland of drivel. Open a bottle of fine wine, sit back and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Just wonderful listening.......2002-11-23

I am not an audiophile. I do love this music -- I heard one track on a website and ordered the CD. The whole CD is delightful and very soothing -- but not boring in the least.

5 out of 5 stars Spanish, Italian, South American and African dances of the 16thC........2006-07-09

This is a collection of Spanish, Italian, South American and African dance, much of it Baroque from the 16th Century. The selections appear to be the repertoire of Lucas Ruiz de Ribayaz y Foncea. They are delightful, wonderful listening pleasure.

This CD demonstrates an interesting concept, the falsa, whereby a musician hits a discordant note and then must extricate themselves by integration of the false note using their mastery of harmony and their instrument. Contemporary painters also use this concept of the falsa, a tension crating false stroke of the brush, which the artist must integrate with the other parts of painting.

There are many jewels on this CD including a Zarambeques, a 16th century negro slave dance from Mexico. Both restrained and formal danza and more flambouant bailes are represetned here from Hipanic communities in Europe and the New World. A high kick during dancing was a Bolero.

The use of original and rare instruments offers a unique sound to this super collection of super music from another time and place.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Latin American Baroque at its best!!!.......2001-11-30

A very well chosen selection of music from Latin America in the 16th and 17th centuries. This music was produced by a very powerful mixture of African, European, and Indian elements. You get to hear music in Galician, Castillian, Quechua, Nahuatl, and Latin (sometimes even mixed) all sounding European but always with a very distinct New World falvor.

For those with a taste for baroque music, this recording provides a very alternative and refreshing sound. My personal recommendations: Hanacpachap cussicuinin, A este sol peregrino, tarará and Guaracha: Convidando esta la noche. Remember to hear the last two pieces together... the contrast provided by the different styles makes the last piece even more exciting.

5 out of 5 stars Sunny and joyous!.......2000-04-10

We all know about the horrors of the Age of Exploration in the New World. However, Joel Cohen's goal with this recording is to call attention to "the meeting places of light and beauty that did indeed exist in those terrible, hard centuries." He shows us the fruitful intercultural exchange that transpired between the indigenous American cultures, the Spanish, and the Africans.

And indeed, this is beautiful music. It is lively and driven at times by the sunny strumming of the baroque guitar and the maracas, tambourine, and claves, and at other times stately with the contemplative musings of Iberian harp or the majestic organs in Mexican cathedrals. The lovely, baroque/Latin voices (most of the time a quartet of two sopranos, a counter-tenor, and a tenor) soar throughout, sometimes sobbing, sometimes creating the impression of frantic dancing. But the real revelation is the inclusion of the black women's choir "Les Amis de la Sagesse," who add their Afro-Caribben stylizations (sometimes ambiguously Indian) to hymns and chants, culminating in an exuberant and majestic religious guaracha with the entire ensemble. A true gem.

5 out of 5 stars Musica en el nuevo mundo.......1999-09-30

This is a great recording by the Boston Camerata. Music from the new world perfomed on period instruments. This recording includes music by Spanish and native composers. This was inspired and influenced by the different cultures of the new world from a vailete to a cumba, from music of Spain to a chant in honor of the virgin Mary in Quechua(The language of the Incas)This is a great recording of the music of colonial Latin-America.
