James Galway plays baroque music's greatest hits for flute........1999-05-31

Flute players and flute lovers everywhere will enjoy this collection of Galway recordings from the Baroque era. Besides the title cut, selections from the Telemann "Suite in a minor" will be appreciated by flute teachers and performers, as well as other works transcribed for flute. The Albnioni "Adagio" is particularly haunting and could be a new addition to the repertoire. Handel's "Queen of Sheba" is also nicely done. A good recording to have on hand for those performers wishing to "demonstrate" various works for perspective clients as well.

poor quality control.......2007-07-20

2 disc package.
The 1st disk has some defect. When I put it in a CD player, the player stops turning, and no music is played. Thus I have had no opportunities to listen to. The second disc was tightly inserted into the case. The center hole must have been too small. I was unable to remove the disc out of the center retainer. When I pulled the disc hard to remove it, the disc cracked, and thus I had to toss it into trash can. Some piece of junk for 10 dollars. I would not recommend this company's CDs.

Melody Unending.......2006-12-04

This 2CD compilation set is being offered at a budget price and includes many of Dvorák's most famous works, or at least excerpts from them. All of them derive from the back-catalog of the Naxos label and although some of the performances are by artists or groups not necessarily world-famous, there is not a weak performance to be found here.

I particularly liked, on CD1, the Vlach Quartet's playing of the third movement of Dvorák's 'American' String Quartet, the lilting third movement of his Symphony No. 8 played by Stephen Gunzenhauser and the Slovak Philharmonic, and the third movement of the 'Dumky' Piano Trio. I melted at Jana Valaskova's performance of 'O Silver Moon' from Dvorak's opera, 'Rusalka.'

On CD2, highlights include Maria Kliegel playing the second movement from the Cello Concerto, the first movement of the Wind Serenade (played by members of the Oslo Philharmonic), the finale of the Piano Quintet with a vastly underrated pianist, Ivan Klánský, and the Vlach Quartet. The Largo from the 'New World' Symphony (the 'Going Home' movement) is given a radiant reading.

Given the budget pricing and the never less than excellent performances, this is a true winner, particularly for those who want to familiarized themselves with the broad range of Dvorák's music.

An intriguing collection of a composer worth discovering.......2001-01-09

One of the greatest nineteenth-century violinists, Joachim is best remembered today for his frequent collaborations with Brahms and Schumann, both of whose influences can be heard in the works recorded here. The third violin concerto dates from the 1870s, after he had largely ceased his compositional efforts in deference to his great contemporary from Hamburg. Centered in the bucolic key of G major, the first movement elaborates on a charmingly naive song subject composed by a departed friend, and maintains a thoroughly classical demeanour, right down to some eighteenth-century gruppetti! The violin writing is solidly in the conservative German romantic tradition in terms of embroidered figuration and general avoidance of ostentation. Some influence of Viotti, whose a minor concerto Joachim greatly admired, can also be found in the particular technical devices employed. The c minor slow movement, primarily austere and noble in character, is arguably the strongest of the piece, with some welcome contrapuntal detail in the accompaniment. The finale shows evidence of Joachim's Hungarian background, although it is not musically exploited to the same effect as in his eponymously nicknamed second concerto, overall a stronger work. Bits of Bruch, as well as a tutti passage seemingly taken straight from the finale of the Schumann piano concerto, are pasted together to form something reminiscent of the nationalistic fantasias turned out by numerous Romantic-era instrumentalists.

Takako Nishizaki gives a clean and solid performance, but lacks the determined conviction necessary to make up for the work's deficiencies; in addition, the first movement seems under tempo. The two overtures, with their brooding programatic contents apparently sympathetic to Joachim's expressive language, are dramatic and compelling, and, like all his orchestral music, superbly scored in a manner that might strike us as Brahmsian until we realize Joachim came first (in symphonic writing, at least). The Stuttgart Radio Symphony under Meir Minsky sounds full and robust, without precluding some beautifully delicate wind playing, though more rhythmic inflexion would add momentum to most everything. The recorded sound is pleasant and captures a wide dynamic range, without the artificial forward placement of the soloist one often encounters.

I've been wild about the d minor concerto for years. It reminds me of a joyful nobleman in character. Stately yet somehow lively. For my taste, this is one of the top, top CDs. Higly recommended!

Remarkable choices of great materpierces ! Viva Goebel.......2003-03-07

This is probably one of my favorite CD(even if Goebel does not play violin or alto in neither of the peieces ). Trully, I was happy to discover Heinnichen, Dieupart, Fash, Pisendel,Quantz and Veracini. Of course,Vivaldi and Biondi made me discovered Pisendel before, but not in this way. For those who did not buy the double Cds of Heinichen (which his highly recommanded by the critics and sell at high price too) recorded by Goebel, it's your chance to listen to some of his works. You will enjoy the concerto en fa majeur and the beautiful pastorale. On the whole, all the music recorded there is abolutely sublime. The concertos of Fasch and Quantz are so pleasant to hear that you won't be bored to listen to them again and again. The sonata of Pisendel is, at first, dramatic. But the second movement is brilliant and powerfull. The ouverture of Veracini recorded there is, at my own point of wiew, far more interesting than the Cd dedicated to this composer that Goebel recodered in 1994. Its'full of surprises, dynamism and very fast movements. A little tornado. The latter gives not the impression (fortunately)that it's the same music that is constantly repeated like it was the case in the recording dedicated to five concertos of Veracini that I will critic with severity in my next review (Veracini,5 Ouvertures, MAK, R. Goebel, Archiv)
