Forget the complicated title: what we have here is a vivacious and charming set of sonatas for stringed instruments and continuo (keyboard instrument or lute). A sonata during the Baroque period could be almost anything, but in this case refers to a multi-movement composition that usually begins with a slow music, ends quickly, and excludes obvious dance music. The famous Battaglia is a program piece that features soldiers marching around, their drunken celebration (in several keys) before battler, the battle itself, and the lament of the wounded. It's great fun, as is all of Biber's music, actually. He remains, along with Zelenka, the great undiscovered master of the Baroque period. Now you know. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Satisfacation .......2007-07-22

I had listenned a few Biber's music, some are instrumnetal, ex mystery sonatas, die rosenkranz-sonaten, battalia, harmonia artificioso . some are vocal, requiem. Seldom I didn't like it. This time I try this Manze and the English Concert cooperate the Missa Christi Resurgentis, it is very impressive, and full colorful on instrument using, ex stringed and brass alternate with. You shouldn't treat it as a choir music.
Besides, manze served as both director and violin, he showed me another his skill. That's not what I saw in his playing on former CDs. It's worth trying, purchaing and collecting.

5 out of 5 stars A splendid achievement.......2006-04-22

Andrew Manze has done much in recent years to popularize Biber's "other" music, i.e., pieces other than the justly-renowned Rosary Sonatas, and he scores another victory with this disc of a recently-rediscovered Mass setting.

When performed in a reverberant space, antiphonal music (like Biber's) can sometimes sound muddied or confused, as group clashes with group and line with line. Manze and his band avoid this pitfall, and keep the music intelligible while still using the spacious acoustic of London's Temple Church to create excitement at the climaxes. The instrumentalists are excellent; the singers are likewise, and blend nicely.

In addition to the Mass itself (tracks 2-4, 6, 8, 10) Manze gives us instrumental music that might have been used at an Easter Mass in Biber's Salzburg. I am particularly fond of the framing trumpet fanfares, and also of the sonata by Biber's contemporary Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, which has all the excitement of a piece by the Gabrielis with a delicious Austrian flavor.

Highly recommended.

DO NOT BE PUT OFF OR BE DISSUADED BY THE INCORRECT NOTE ABOVE. - THIS CD DOES NOT REQUIRE SACD COMPATIBLE HARDWARE TO BE PLAYED! - IT PLAYS MAGNIFICENTLY ON ANY OLD CD PLAYER THAT YOU MAY HAVE - THAT IS WHY IT IS CALLED A "HYBRID" SACD. - Obviously, when you get around to acquiring a SACD player in the future you will enjoy it even more, but until then, you'll be more than delighted.

5 out of 5 stars Andrew Manze does it again! .......2006-01-08

Andrew Manze does it again! This wonderful recording features the first recorded performance of the previously lost Missa Christi Resurgentis. Apparently the piece has lain dormant for the last three hundred years and was only rediscovered recently in a Czech monestary.

The piece takes a departure from the typical Easter mass in that Biber inserts beautiful solo interludes between the liturgical choral parts of the mass. Manze deftly balances the piece's choral climaxes with these solo transitions giving the entire piece a feeling of integrity that might have been lacking in a less comprehensive treatment of the piece.

Manze's interpretation is heart-felt and brisk. No sleepy, by-the-numbers baroque here! The actual recording is warm and dynamic in the best manner. Highly recommended for anyone looking to expand his or her musical horizons.

The 17th-century Austrian composer Heinrich Biber is remembered today for his extraordinary solo violin music--collections such as the Mystery Sonatas. He wrote a number of large-scale instrumental works and choral pieces as well, but their reputation is not as high. They include a lot of grand gestures for brass, but they tend to be harmonically static and often seem long-winded. So Konrad Junghänel and his superb musicians have really achieved something by making the works on this disc sound so appealing. The Litaniae de Sancto Josepho ("Litanies of Saint Joseph") and the two sonatas have a bit of harmonic variety and a lot of exciting instrumental color, with penetrating strings, grave trombones, and brilliant trumpets alongside their mellower relatives, cornetts. Junghänel gives the music a rhythmic spring that holds a listener's interest--and probably brings a smile to the face. Alongside Biber's music on this disc is a similarly scored Mass by Georg Muffat, a contemporary and colleague of Biber. While Biber's music seems very much of the 17th century, parts of Muffat's Mass have a marchlike pulse, brief solo passages, and simple fugues that prefigure early Haydn. --Matthew Westphal

    5 out of 5 stars Forgotten masterpieces.......2004-09-27

I purchased this recording in order to further my interest in the liturgical music of Heinrich Biber. The Litany of St Joseph on this CD is a good work, but having now heard a great deal of Biber's sacred music, I am aware of the way in which Biber continually deploys the same devices in his sacred music and this Litany doesn't have anything to add if one is familiar with the Missa Saliburgensis or the Missa Bruxellensis. The real revelation on this disc is the Missa in labore requies by Muffat, the only sacred work currently associated with this composer. This is an absolute masterpiece of melody, architecture and orchestration. The disc is fleshed out with Biber's Sonata Sancti Polycarpi (a fairly stereotypical work for trumpet ensemble) and one of the sonatas from the Fidicinium sacro-profanum. Joining these are two instrumental works by Bertali, whose star must surely rise again - both are highly effective works with a magnificent sense of colour. Cantus Colln and Concerto Palatino clearly have fun with these works; as some of their discs are technically superb but lifeless, the energy here is doubly thrilling as it is also allied to a technically flawless performance. Very highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars A Muffat Masterpiece.......2000-06-30

This is a phenomenal recording of Muffat's recently attributed and only known choral work. I am familiar with the work as I performed it in its American premiere at my alma mater, St. Mary's College of Maryland, in 1992. (Prior to its discovery only instrumentalists were fortunate enough to play Muffat!) Junghanel did an excellent job to catch the spirit of the piece with vibrant tempi, period instruments, and soaring pure-tone voices (this piece really drags if there's anything less). Some highlights include the unorthodox setting of the "passus est" in the Credo, the contrapuntal Christe eleison, and the melody of the Agnus Dei. My only criticisms are that the Biber selections (beautiful in their own right) are interspersed tracks between the parts of the mass (confusing the listener) and that there should have been more voices on the tutti sections to distinguish the double soli quartets from the double choirs.
