3 out of 5 stars An overly careful Sixth and a good stab at the impossible Twelfth.......2006-07-20

I don't know whehter to admire so many Amazon reviewers for being good Samaritans about the much-maligned Shostakovich Twelfth, or to wonder if they were paid off by the last surviving Communist cell in America. The work is hollow, bombastic, false, and aimless. Critics are a fickle breed, but every single one can't be wrong.

I love the Sixth Sym., however, and cannot get out my head the tragic reading of the first movement as delivered by Mravinsky. Haitink is relatively careful in this great arch of a Largo, finding its intensity only at odd moments. He treads too nimbly in the Scherzo, which needs more edge and bite. The finale is splendidly played by the Concergebouw winds in particular, and although Haitink's tempo isn't the swirling Presto that the composer asks for, even with a bit of a lumber in its gait the movement is a success.

As to the details of the Twelfth, the reviewer who declares this to be the first great performance has overlooked the searing, intense Mravinsky version that has long set the standard. But Decca's sonics are much better, and the Concertgebouw plays with more smoothness and richness than the Leningrad Phil. To his credit, Haiitnk's performance is serious and committed. I doubt that perspectives will ever change toward this work--it seems like empty loyal-Soviet-artist posturing from beginning to end.

Of course, to convincingly glorify Lenin and the Bolshevik Revolution at this late date would take the reincarnation of Beethoven. The fact that we must endure this banality for almost 45 min. makes dentistry seem like a lark in spring.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Superb Performance of the Neglected 12th.......2005-08-20

Shostakovich's Symphony No. 12 in D Minor, Op. 112 (The Year 1917 - in Memory of Lenin) has not favored well with critics and apparently with music directors. It is rare to hear a performance at all, much less a fine one, which leads the unknowing public to believe the pundits who descry this work as 'movie music' and contradictory to Shostakovich's later professed repugnance with the Communist state: how could that composer have written a work honoring the Revolution of 1917?

Time changes perspectives and while the 12th Symphony is not the through-composed great work of his other symphonies, it still remains an important and very beautiful work. Written in four continuous movements, each movement represents stages in the Revolution: 1) Revolutionary Petrograd, 2) Razliv (Lenin's hideout north of St Petersburg), 3) Aurora (the ship that fired on the Winter Palace, reportedly the inception of the Revolution, and 4) The Dawn of Humanity. The scoring is clear and straightforward and the symphony is actually one of the more accessible of Shostakovich's 15 symphonies.

Bernard Haitink and the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam give a powerful and honest and committed performance, one that will hopefully encourage further performances of this neglected work. Coupled with the 12th is a stunning performance of Shostakovich's much played and much loved 6th Symphony. Haitink brings great dignity and sonorous playing from the Concertgebouw and indeed this is one of the strongest recordings available of this symphony also. While many still regard Rostropovich's recordings of these works with the London Symphony Orchestra as the definitive ones, those performances are now available only in the boxed set of all of the Shostakovich symphonies. That is superb collection, but for those interested in acquainting with the 12th, this recording is a fine alternative. Grady Harp, August 05

5 out of 5 stars Overlooked masterpieces (or pretty close, anyway).......2005-05-22

This is probably my favorite recording in Haitnik's Shostakovich cycle. While these are not Shostakovich's "best" symphonies, they are still first-rate works that demonstrate Shostakovich's fervent commitment to musical and emotional truth, even in what some might consider the propagandistic 12th symphony. The recording is amazing and Haitnik's interpretation is the best in my book for both works. I couldn't imagine anyone else making anything of the 12th symphony, and his 6th is more poised and confident than anyone else's performance (though adimittedly, I haven't heard every recorded performance--but most).

My favorite is clearly the magnificent 6th symphony, a work that betrays some fondness for Prokofiev's symphonic idiom without being at all derivative. The dark, expansive opening movement is one of Shostakovich's greatest symphonic frescoes: a haunting melody arches overhead with an almost Sibelian sweep, though its emotional intensity is more akin to Mahler or even Tchaikovsky. What better way to conclude the symphony than with two irreverent, diabolic scherzos, very similar to the scherzo of Prokofiev's 5th symphony, but less four-square. In short, it's a masterpiece of 20th century symphonic writing, resisting every cliche and convention of the period, yet still capturing his moment in time and his unique musical thumbprint.

The 12th is less a symphony than a suite from one of his memorable and dramatic movie scores. Not quite on the level of Hamlet or King Lear, but somewhere between those works and Five Days, Five Nights. The opening movement is trademark Shostakovich, with rushing strings and piercing woodwings. A slow, contemplative movement follows (deeper than his critics would suggest), followed by a vicious "scherzo" full of orchestral artillery. And while the finale can sound a bit ridiculous in other hands, here it sounds, if not quite triumphant, then at least a fitting conclusion to a tuneful, propulsive work. While the 11th symphony captures the sense of a national epic more convincingly, the 12th is a lot of fun--and no less cogently argued.

I can recommend every release in Haitnik's series, but this one could be easily overlooked. Don't make that mistake. Or do, but don't say I didn't warn you.

5 out of 5 stars If you like heroic music check out Shostakovich 12.......2004-06-08

I have never understood why Shostakovich's 12th doesn't get more credit. Sure, it's a big brassy heroic sounding piece, but sometimes that exactly what I want to hear. I often think if someone else had written it, it might have gone over better with the critics. If you want to introduce Shostakovich to your non-classical music aligned friends, look no further. In fact I would go so far to say there isn't really a week point in it as far as accessibility is concerned. Even it's somewhat brooding second movement has a certain subdued excitement to it. Shostakovich 6th is not catchy in the same way as the twelfth, but it tends to grow on you after listening to a few times. The orchestra on both these pieces is first grade and the sound quality is good. Truthfully this is one of my most played CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Very satisfying in all respects.......2003-01-08

Bernard Haitink brings real stature to these works, especially the sometimes maligned Twelfth Symphony. The playing of the Concertgebouw Orchestra is trenchant and, at times, cinematic. Instumental colors project with extremely satisfying vividness, no doubt made possible, in part, by the marvelous recording job of the London/Decca sound engineers. Conductor and orchestra are so convincing in their sonic, architectural and emotional presentation that, at this time, it is difficult for me to return to some of the others who have recorded these works, (though, anywhere in Shostakovich, I almost always make exceptions for Mravinsky, whom I consider to be the composer's most accurate and exciting interpreter despite sound quality that never compares favorably with what Decca offers.) Rarely have I encountered Haitink, in particular, sound more involved and intense in making music come to life. In other instances too in this series, the team of Haitink/Concertgebouw/London Philharmonic/Decca has delivered most generously. This linking of the Sixth and Twelfth Symphonies just might constitute the best introduction for those who are curious about this composer who speaks volumes.

Amazon.com essential recording

Mstislav Rostropovich was a friend of the composer, and his performances of the 15 Shostakovich symphonies are uniquely authoritative. It's true that as a conductor the great cellist has had his ups and downs, but unlike so many far less musical personalities, he has only recorded the music that he feels most passionately about, and the results have been generally impressive. His performances of Symphonies Nos. 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, and 14 are really among the best ever, and there isn't as single performance among the rest that isn't at least very good. The National Symphony Orchestra of Washington in particular plays with real guts and conviction. An essential set for fans of the composer. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars A Historically Significant Box Set with Lasting Significance.......2004-10-03

This set of 12 CDs is a recording of all fifteen symphonies of Dmitri Shostakovich by the cellist/conductor Mstislav Rostropovich. Not only is this survey of Shostokovich's very important symphonic output one of the few times we are able to listen to all the symphonies with as few variables as possible, allowing us to truly hear the course of thought and creativity and turmoil of Shostokovich, but it also fulfills a promise between the composer and his pupil (Rostropovich) to create this project. Rostropovich premiered some of these symphonies and had direct instruction from the composer as to the interpretation of them all. All of these facts make this a compendium of recordings that belong in the libraries of music lovers devoted to the genius of Shostakovich.

Now if only the individual performances were as solid as the project itself! While we may be hearing these works with the knowledge that the composer sanctioned them, they are variable in success. Part of this is due to the variable quality of sound the conductor elicits from the three orchestras involved (the National Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Members of the Academic Symphony Orchestra Moscow). The tempi are less successful than those chosen by better conductors performing these works today, and the usual degree of excitement obtained by other batons is missing. But the performances of all 15 symphonies are never less than interesting and are indeed at times illuminating. In all, this is an important body of recordings and belongs in collections of all those who appreciate the significance of Dmitri Shostakovich.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing performance of the 14th.......2001-08-10

I currently own 5 versions of the 14th symphony (Kondrashin, Bernstein, Barshai (a relay of the preimiere in Moscow), Haitink, and another Rostropovich version on the Russian Revelation label. The Bernstein is saggy and contrived, the Haitink fails to excite, the earlier Rostropovich is in terrible audio, The Kondrashin is excellent and full of white heat, and the Barshai is even more hair raising.

And where does this version of the 14th belong? Among the very best. This perfomance's soloists were the original soloists Shostakovich intended (Vishnevskaya and Rhestin). The orchestra though different from the primiere is still excellent. When listening to the Haitink, the orchestra plays with emotional reservation. Not the case here

2 out of 5 stars Great set, but Symphony 14 sounds a little off.......2001-07-26

Rostropovich's performance is very good, but I haven't particularly liked the 14th (my favourite!). Comparing this recording to the other two I own (Bernstein with the NY Philarmonic and Haitink with the Concertgebouw -- this last has lyrics in each poem's original language, which I like better), I found the performance sub-par. It seems the orchestra is not performing cohesively during some piano passages.

Also, it is a shame (or should I say a sham) that not all the CDs are sold individually. I tried to buy the series one-by-one across 3 countries (US, Brazil and Chile), and haven't found Symphony No. 7 so far...

5 out of 5 stars An Ideal Pairing of the Extremes of Shostokovich's Symphonic Statements.......2006-07-06

Though the mighty symphonies of Dmitri Shostakovich stand solidly on their own as musical compositions, the underlying Russian history that is mirrored in the times in which each symphony was composed sheds even more light on the non-musical content. The rarely performed Symphony No. 2 in B flat major was not listed as a symphony as such on the original score title page: instead it is called 'To October - A Symphonic Dedication'. The work is a strange one, full of experimental sonorities including a brooding, almost choral sounding opening movement, a second movement which begins with a trio for solo violin, clarinet and bassoon soon mutating to a full blown cacophony of winds versus strings, a factory whistle blast (horns and trombones) serves as introduction for the choral movement, 'To October'. While the opening of the work challenges the 'new decadent Western music', the choral ode is richly tonal, the chorus singing about the begging for work and bread until Lenin brought the October Revolution and an end to suffering on the part of the peoples of Russia - clearly composed to satisfy the political demands of the regime in power. It works! Mariss Janssons conducts the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus is a deeply moving performance.

Symphony No. 12 in D minor (The Year 1917 - in Memory of Lenin) is far more familiar to audiences and though it, too, references the influence of Lenin on the Russian the work does not rely on words or chorus nor does it separate into movements. The sections - 'Revolutionary Petrograd', 'Razlif' (Lenin's hiding place in a peasant's hut), 'Aurora' (the battle ship that signaled the beginning of the October Revolution), and 'The Dawn of Humanity' - are played without separation. The themes and development are mature Shostakovich and the effect of the work is overpowering, calling for a very large orchestra. Janssons conducts the work with all of the nuances and subtleties balanced with the heroic power of the work. It is a fine performance and an even finer CD with such thought as to pairing these two associated Lenin symphonies that have such different ways of addressing the same event! Grady Harp, July 06

      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Truly Awful .......2004-08-19

This recording sounds like it was made by an amateur high school orchestra. Unfortunately Naxos orchestral recordings can be a bit of a lucky dip. Some of them are great (the Bax symphonies for example) whilst others, like this execrable cacaphony, are absolute shockers. Shostakovich would turn in his grave if he heard this one.

1 out of 5 stars The worst of the worst........2003-10-20

What a horrible recording from Naxos. The Czecho-Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra is really not world class. The strings are scratchy and out of tune in the high register. The woodwinds are in extreme pain and consistently out of tune. This performance is totally uninspired. No matter how cheap the price of this recording, it would be a mistake to pay hard currency for this product. One hundred cats screaching in an alley would sound more in tune. Go for a higher price recording.

4 out of 5 stars Often crazy, but what a class.......1998-12-06

These CD's contain kown, very known (Canteloube, Bach transcriptions), and rarities. Its often delirious, and the orchestrations are rewritten (Dvorak nine, Tchaikowsky six). But Brahms five and Beethoven third are very serious and have good place in a plethoric discography. Mahlers second is a reference, and we have a grandios Wagner, with "just enough customization" The sound is remastered, good quality but a little sharp (Brahms-Shostakowitch). Anyway an essential contribution to the music by a great monster of the conducting. Stokowski: often imited, never matched. Indispensable !!

5 out of 5 stars Some notes on this work.......2004-05-15

There are five Shostakovich Symphonies of his fifteen that have political/historical programs: Nos. 2, 3, 7, 11 and 12. Probably one of the strongest arguments put forth by those who support the Volkov view of the composer (i.e., that he felt constant oppression in both his professional and personal life under the Stalin and post-Stalin Soviet regimes and thus satirized his persecutors with veiled symbolism in his music), is that these five patriotic symphonies are his least effective. The Twelfth is probably his most approachable Symphony, not least because it contains several attractive, quite memorable themes. But its expressive language is self-consciously straightforward, as if the composer were striving with every note to avoid complexity and controversy at all cost.
The Twelfth Symphony, being rather simple and straightforward contains nothing of the hidden symbolism one hears in other Shostakovich Symphonies, like the Fifth (the finale's forced jubilation), Seventh (the supposed depiction of the banality of evil in the first movement buildup) and Tenth (the second movement's purported portrait of Stalin). Thus, its apparently sincere depiction of the Bolshevik Revolution as a heroic and liberating event becomes hard to reconcile with the view of Shostakovich as a dissident. Yet, it is possible that the composer disapproved of the Soviet system under Stalin and the oppression that still lingered, but still harbored a positive view of Lenin and the revolutionary movement.

The Twelfth Symphony has four continuous movements, each having subtitles relating to the Revolution: 1) Revolutionary Petrograd (marked Moderato - -Allegro); 2) Razliv (Allegro -- Adagio); 3) Aurora (Allegro); 4) The Dawn of Humanity (Allegretto--Moderato). It should be mentioned here that the second-movement subtitle, Razliv (Overflow), refers to the locale north of St. Petersburg where Lenin hid out to conduct his revolutionary activities in safety; and Aurora was the name of the ship that fired a shot through a window of the Winter Palace, initiating the Revolution.

There are two main themes that occur throughout the Symphony. The first symbolizes oppression (in the first movement introduction) and a rallying against it in the Allegro section that follows. The ensuing second theme, which is similar to the first, though more hymn-like and serene, symbolizes hope and ultimately victory over the oppressors. Both have strong appeal, and as Shostakovich develops them throughout the Symphony, their metamorphoses yield music of colorful bombast, including the march near the end of the third movement and the percussion-laden coda of the finale, the drama as found in the development of the first movement, and the restlessness of the second movement.

As a populist drama, this symphony offers thematic appeal but tempers its attractive qualities with the composer's overly simplistic expressive language and blatant bombast in his apparent artistic acquiescence to Soviet authorities. Was Shostakovich a true dissident, like Solzhenitzin, or an opportunist? -- Robert Cummings

The performances on this well-filled two-CD set come from the last decades of Leopold Stokowski's extraordinarily long life (1882-1977). The five selections from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet are dated 1954, everything else being recorded between 1960 and 1974. After opening with two idiomatic Bach transcriptions, much of the program concentrates on 19th-century romanticism, a glittering fantasy being conjured from Wagner's "Magic Fire Music." Even so, given the title The Magician, a reference to Stokowski's role in Disney's film Fantasia--and specifically The Sorcerer's Apprentice sequence--one might be surprised that there is no recording of that piece here.

Equally surprising, though in a very different way, is the sheer energy the 92-year-old conductor brings to a 1974 reading of Beethoven's Coriolan Overture. With a deeply romantic intensity, Villa-Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 has surely never sounded more European, soprano Anna Moffo singing with impassioned commitment. At 28 minutes, by far the longest recording is Romeo and Juliet; beginning in almost detached tranquility, Stokowski builds to implacable tragedy. Finally, Shostakovich's suite The Age of Gold is witty and idiosyncratic, the high point being an especially lyrical and affecting Adagio. A feast of rapt music-making and vividly bold sound, this is an excellent anthology thoroughly deserving a sequel. --Gary S Dalkin

4 out of 5 stars The Magician...a well deserved reputation........2001-06-05

Up front, I'll admit I don't care for most of the selections in this 2 disk album; the second disk virtually is wasted on me. Thats why its not a 5-star. That being said, the Liszt, Wagner, Smetana, and Rimsky-Korsakov pieces are well worth the price of admission. Stokowski's coloration of arrangement and tempo are remarkable. His Hungarian Rhapsody and Wagner pieces are so unique, its like hearing the old war horses for the first time. Its a shame most of Stokowski's recordings predate high fidelity.

      4 out of 5 stars A Well-paired Survey of the Shostakovich 7th and 12th .......2004-11-07

Though there are many recordings of the popular Symphony No. 7: 'Leningrad' (for good reason, as this is one of the finest of Shostakovich's glowing works), the catalogue listing for recordings of the Symphony No. 12: The Year 1917 is less lengthy. This would probably come as no surprise to Shostakovich himself, as this particular work represented inner conflicts in his own view of his homeland political milieu, views more nebulous on the surface but suggested in the context.

Haitink and the London Philharmonic Orchestra give a full-blooded performance of the 7th Symphony. Though there are other versions perhaps more electrifying and sonically sound than this one (Gergiev, for example), for a good, solid, edgy performance this one is among the best.

Where Haitink shines - this time with the radiant Concertgebouw Orchestra - is in the Symphony No. 12. This work represents years of thinking and reacting to a challenge facing Shostakovich to come up with a tribute to Lenin: he avoided any one-on-one tribute by instead focusing on the October Rebellion of 1917 and the hopes (if later thwarted) of the new world promised by communism. The work is in four contiguous movements and while there are only two or three melodic lines explored, the orchestration is lush and richly evocative. Shostakovich's soaring and pizzting celli, basses, and higher strings are punctuated by gleaming solo work from bassoon, clarinet, flute, trombone, French horn and tympani. While the overall effect of this work does not have the intellectual or philosophical power of his great symphonies, it is a work too seldom performed. Haitink gives a lush reading that plays up the beauties of the music - if not the psychological puns hidden beneath this cinematic work. Grady Harp, November 2004
