Customer Reviews:
The Maestro.......2005-07-25
Segovia was and always will be The Maestro. He was, as other reviewers say, the pioneer of modern classical guitar. To say that he has been somehow surpassed and passed by, as one previous reviewer seems to think is pure rubbish. To say that others have followed in his footsteps and become greats as well, is fact.
Music is always open to interpretation. Segovia was a great player and to understand the history of the classical guitar one must have listened to Segovia. He created the yardstick by which others are now measured.
This set not only includes great works played by the Maestro, it also includes Segovia speaking of his own life with the guitar. It is worth having along with other, more modern, gifted players such as Williams, Bream, Parkening and others who followed in the Maestro's footsteps.
Has anyone ever created melodies like this from a guitar?.......2003-07-21
Okay, my classical experience is highly limited, having been raised on a healthy diet of Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and other blazing rock guitarists. But that doesn't mean I can't recognize a powerful guitarist when I see it, and Andres Segovia is just that. Sure you'll find your share of faster, more energetic playing, but you won't find any guitarist (Robert Johnson probably. George Harrison, maybe) in blues or rock that plays with as much melody, texture, and sheer, tear-jerking, beauty. And even if you have, guess what? They weren't the first to do it, and they weren't doing as far back as the 1920s. (Kicking it until the grand old age of 104) He is one of the first truly great guitarists, a virtuoso long before Satriani and Vai, playing classical on guitar long before anyone else, and playing it better then anyone else. This is him, completely solo and absolutely out of this universe in his playing. If you want to play guitar like the greats, then you can't go another day without this in your collection, deserving of a spot on your wall with Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Johnson, and all the imitators that followed him!
The Anton Rubinstein of Guitarist.......2003-06-15
Musically, it's not just guitar music that he is offering: note the exquisite emotion patterns, the languor and the nostalgia and his sighs...it's most soothing and consolating.
Technically, the subtleties and the phenomenon could partly be attributed to his insistence on the use of the fleshy part, instead of the hard part of his thumb. Like Arrau and Horszowski on the piano or Menuhin on the violin: they always stuck to the hardest way aiming at the best result.
The remastered sound is wonderful. I'm not particularly keen about the narrative part though.
I AGREE.......2003-02-21
Segovia was the greatest classical guitarist that ever lived and always WILL be the greatest that ever lived, for he was the ROCK on which the classical guitar was practically founded! These 3 CD's of his most treasured pieces cut straight through the heart with GREAT brilliance and virtuosity- Words cannot express his mastery of the instrument. I especially liked the autobiography on the fourth CD- VERY thrilling to hear the maestro's voice- In Spanish AND in English. This is a MUST HAVE for the serious classical guitarist-
this once was a great recording........2002-11-10
I totally agree with the fact that every classical guitarist
owes great respect to Segovia, but the reason I gave this recording such a low rating is a simple matter of evolution. Unlike instruments like the violin, the classical guitar as we know it today is a very young instrument (+-1 century). It also didn't get the recognition it deserved untill segovia came along. From that moment on, the classical guitar's popularity increased immensely, actually it is still growing. As a logical result of this growing popularity, the quality of the technique improved and interpretations were refined.
Though Segovia was incredible guitarist in his time and situation (he was the ONLY international preformer that played this instrument), it would just be irrational to claim that the dozens of great preformers later on never improved compared to segovia. It's like denying that einstein's theories are more accurate than those of Isaac Newton, because Newton was the rock on wich fysics were mostly build.
These recordings are interesting for those who would like to do some historical research on the classical guitar, but for those who just want to listen to a good preformance, I would really recommend the more recent recordings (Russel, Fisk, Sollscher,...).

Customer Reviews:
The Duke Live In Concert.......2002-03-02
As a musician, arranger, composer and bandleader, Edward "Duke" Ellington is one of the giants of 20th Century American music. This 6-CD set, released to coincide with Ellington's 100th birthday, is a collection of live concert dates that celebrates Ellington's genius.
Disc-1: Taken from two full orchestra London concerts, one in 1963, the other in 1964. Soloists include Cootie Williams (trumpet), Buster Cooper (trombone) and Paul Gonsalves (reeds). Vocalists are Milt Grayson and Ernie Shepard. While "Take the 'A' Train" and "Mood Indigo" may be the more familiar numbers, the 15-minute "Harlem" is one of the disc's standout tracks. Running time 66:54
Disc-2: From a 1964 New York piano recital with only a bass and drums rhythm section. [Note: "Carolina Shout" features Willie "The Lion" Smith on piano, and "Tonk" and "Things Ain't What They Used To Be" features Billy Strayhorn on piano. (The latter composed by Duke's son Mercer.)] Running time 46:21
Disc-3&4: Taken from separate Chicago concerts in 1946 featuring a full orchestra. Disc 3 features two songs as part of a tribute to W.C. Handy, "Beale Street Blues" and "Memphis Blues." Also, tracks 15-18 feature Django Reinhardt on guitar. Disc 4 includes two excerpts from Ellington's 50-minute major work "Black, Brown & Beige"--the spiritual "Come Sunday" and the upbeat "Work Song." In addition a six-minute version of "Frankie and Johnny" gives Ellington plenty of room to improvise making this track one of the highlights. Running time 71:30 / 69:33
Disc-5&6: The final two discs represent two sets from a 1948 Cornell University concert featuring a full band. One of the more recent numbers featured on Disc 5 is "The Tattooed Bride," a song that was premiered just the month before this concert. In introducing this nearly 12-minute number, Ellington refers to it as "our most ambitious work of the season." Among the crowd pleasers on Disc 6 is an 8-minute medley of some of Ellington's most popular numbers, including "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," "In a Sentimental Mood" and "It Don't Mean a Thing." Running time 75:05 / 57:18
This may not be the most representative collection of Ellington's career for the neophyte fan (that nod goes to the 3-disc "Highlights from the Duke Ellington Centennial Edition (1927-1973), but there is much to enjoy here for fans of big band jazz. RECOMMENDED

Customer Reviews:
An odd mishmash of latter-day America.......2005-12-08
America didn't have many hits in their Capitol era, the three they did have are here - namely 'You Can Do Magic', 'The Border' and 'Right Before Your Eyes', along with songs such as 'Survival' and 'The Last Unicorn' which were hits in Europe. And then the CD closes with 6 pleasant but far from definitive live versions of most of the Beckley and Bunnell-penned hits from their 70s heyday.
All of which leaves plenty of room for a load of their best album cuts from this underrated era of their career. Unfortunately, rather than really seeking out the 'best' songs from these albums it seems the gaps were filled completely randomly - how else to explain the inclusion of, say, 'Honey' or 'One in a Million' over 'She's A Runaway' or 'Might Be Your Love'?
The tracks that are included are all pleasant enough, and there are a few real gems scattered amongst them, but the 'best'? No chance! (The third disc of the 'Highway' boxed set features a far better representation of this era, and is well worth purchasing for any America fan)
Re-issue of the Premium Gold Collection.......2004-06-16
This is a different edition of the Premium Gold CD. It has the same songs, but slightly different packaging. This is a collection of hits and album cuts from their albums released on the Capitol label (from 1979 through 1985). While they were past their commercial peak, this CD still has some strong material and several songs produced by legendary Beatles producer, Sir George Martin. The hits include You Can Do Magic, The Border, and Right Before Your Eyes. The six earlier hits (Horse With No Name, Ventura Highway, Sister Golden Hair, Tin Man, etc...) are all live performances taken from the 1985 In Concert CD, and are not the original hits. All-in-all, not a bad collection.
A nice collection........1998-06-23
A nice collection from the Capitol albums.

Customer Reviews:
MILLER'S MAGIC AND BEYOND!.......2004-10-07
There are many Glenn Miller collections featuring his unique big band sound, which have ensured his iconic status, aided by his mysterious disappearance whilst flying over the English Channel and the popular 1954 biographical movie which entertained a diverse audience. With 2004 marking his birth centenary THE GLENN MILLER STORY is a series of 20 CD's in five sets which provide the ultimate tribute and includes much additional material rather than the usual popular end of his catalogue which normally fills such compilations. The previous four sets(containing CD's 1-16)concentrated initially on Miller's solo days as a trombonist with various big-bands; his own 1935 established embryonic unit; the enormous popularity of the band which reached top-listing amongst the most respected in the USA and the formation of the 418th Army Air Forces Band when Miller signed up to support the armed forces.
This four-disc set of 106 tracks presents the final chapter over the period December 1943-November 1945 when initially Captain Glenn Miller headed the 2nd. AAF Training Command Radio Unit for a six month stint in England for troop concerts, recording dates and radio broadcasts with the intention of moving through Europe as the opportunity arose. Dinah Shore recorded STAR EYES and ALL I DO IS DREAM OF YOU with the band in London in 1944 and the inclusion of many broadcast tracks show just how well the band played with superb renditions of CARIBBEAN CLPPER and TAIL END CHARLIE amongst many. Resident vocalist Johnny Desmond effectively covers the ballads with A FELLOW ON A FURLOUGH, OH, WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING and SPEAK LOW amongst them, whilst the superb Crew Chiefs finely back up on many tracks. Miller's unexplained loss over the English Channel on 15th December 1944 was obviously a major blow, but under the dual direction of Ray McKinley and Jerry Gray, the band continued with the tour plan until the war ended and the musicians were demobbed. The remainder of the tracks cover various Miller-branded post-war outfits which continued the estblished sound tradition under the auspices of McKinley, Grey and Tex Beneke through the years 1946-1956 with many of the old favourites suitably recreated and new ones added. The sound quality is quite superb for recordings of this age which are well documented within the extensive notes, rare photographs and the band's musician line-up with dates fitting and following the chronological running order. There's certainly enough quality here to want to seek out all the volumes in this excellent anthology.

Album Description
Sid Phillips left behind some great recordings and some amazing arrangements which can be enjoyed for many years to come. His main instrument was the clarinet but he could turn his hand to almost any instrument you gave him.
