To Echo Another Reviewer-Bach und Richter, Zwei deutsche meistern.......2006-12-01
I first heard this recording in Baltimore, Maryland at the home of a music major friend and was lifted out of my seat by the opening cry of "Kyrie"! This has become my favourite recording of the Bach mass. It is without peer. The Munich Bach choir, with its boys and men is superb! What musicianship, what precision of singing and phrasing! The tempi are quick and joyful. The trumpets over the chorus! I could go on for hours. The only recording that comes close is Klemperer's and he does not have the sponteneity that Richter has. Whenever I teach music history, this recording is the example that I use. I highly recommend this to everyone. I had trouble finding it in America and ended up buying it in Exeter, England. Enjoy Bach at his finest!

Verve and Virtuosity.......2005-06-05
Get the SACD version if you can, and hear the
"cori spezzati" (spaced-out choruses) effect played
out on an appropriate audio system. The
light and clear instrumental textures, which are
much in evidence in this recording, enable the
voice to sing fast and free. As a previous
reviewer's complaining comment suggests, there
is a lack of weight and gravity in this approach,
but these are not exactly Junghanel's concerns
anyway by my reckoning; verve and virtuosity
are, and the recording offers these in plenty
though its metaphysical greatness.
Lacks power - too fast.......2005-05-09
While this performance is brilliantly sung and played, the Bach Mass In B Minor demands more than that. Various choruses (e.g. the Gloria, the Sanctus, etc.) require more shear vocal heft than this one voice per part recording can muster. As a result the sense of grandeur that is so glorious in this great work is unfortunately missing. The other choruses seem to work quite well though.
Another problem is that often conductors and singers think that faster is often better and that happens in this recording as well. The Gloria and the Cum Sancto Spiritu are sung so fast that the beauty is lost and rather than hearing a spirited and bouncy chorus that absolutely swings, you hear a race to the finish in an attempt (I suppose) to show how expert the singers are in being able to sing it so fast.
I find I prefer a recording with larger forces. Consider the Fasolis which only uses about 25 voices but captures the Mass in all its grandeur.
If you have got this far, buy this CD IMMEDIATELY!.......2004-08-09
Ever since I acquired Cantus Colln's Early Bach Cantatas CD with Actus Tragicus, Christ LAg in Todesbanden, etc., I have been totally over awed by their approach to the OVPP. A big fan of the practice myself, I am now completely over whelmed by this Mass rendition. Even if you are unsure about the OVPP practice, and your main concern is that, despite the gorgeous clarity and intonation the practice affords, some sections will not sound "full" enough without a chorus- banish all fears and buy this CD. The marvelous recording and engineering of this recording is magical, and the sound is impressively huge. I was initially shocked at the attention the low-end receives, but it never interferes with the delicate textures, or the overall balance. I am the biggest fan of clarity and purity, and volume and presence are of less concern to me- but even I was satisfied and not troubled by this incredibly fat bottom-end.
Also wonderful is the detailed performance notes! For once, the record label has heard our voice and has exquisitely detailed the EXACT performers for each section of the Mass, right down to the bar-numbers for solos within movements!!!! Thank you, Jesus!
Artistically, old Konrad has nailed just about everything spot-on for my nickel, and I love the refreshingly suprising tempos, particularly the 7 part accompanied Credo fugue, Gratias, and Sanctus. They make all other recordings sound six-feet under in these sections, by comparison. This is truly a Mass rendition for the living, not the dead!!!!!!!!
Absolutely Brilliant: My all-time favorite B-minor Mass.......2004-04-03
Out of all the Bach B-minor Masses in my large Bach collection, this is the best of the lot. Junghanel and Cantus Colln use the OVPP model to perfection, not only is the performance top-notch, the recording engineers outdid themselves. A delight to the ears.
To those who prefer a more "modern" and "romanticized" B-minor Mass, this might not be a good choice (get either of the Shaw recordings, they are both fantastic modern versions). The Hickox or Gardiner recordings are great if you want period instruments with a larger choir.
For the purist looking for a set representing more closely what Bach intended for his B-minor Mass, you won't find a better choice than this. Very highly recommended!
OVPP, A Winning Practice.......2004-02-12
This is the fourth recording of the Mass in B minor to utilize the one-voice-per-part (OVPP) theory, and again, it pays of beautifully. While Rifkin, Parrot, and Kuijken have all recorded the Mass in such a configuration, Junghanel's rendition seems to be the winner here.
I noted that however fast the Sanctus, Dona nobis, and Gratias agimus tibi are executed, it is not a detriment to the sound. I believe what makes recording this large scale work with small scale forces is that the balance between each line is sounded perfectly.
The recording reminds me of Herreweghe's... reverberant, ecclesiastical sound, suitable to the music. Each soloist functions perfectly as both a soloist and a chorister. I belive that the singers and players of Cantus Colln have the uniformity of voice unmatched by any other ensemble that has attempted to play Bach's concerted church music in such a configuration.
The Mass in B-Minor under Rifkin's baton was the first to be recorded using OVPP. Nearly a 20 year old theory, Junghanel's set seems to be a revelation. It is nearly flawless. While I would appreciate the more "standard" tempos of some numbers, it is no less a relevatory pleasure to listen to.

You wouldn't think of Lugano, Switzerland, as a hotbed of the early-music revival, but conductor Diego Fasolis has been doing some fascinating things there with his Italian Swiss Radio Chorus. Their performances of Palestrina, Carissimi, and Bach (the Magnificat) on the midprice label Arts Music have demonstrated not only skill and musicality but a willingness to make innovative, even unorthodox choices. Here Fasolis and his chorus, with five bona-fide Baroque stars as soloists and the excellent Italian period-instrument orchestra I Sonatori della Gioiosa Marca, turn their attention to Bach's B Minor Mass. At first the results are underwhelming: all three movements of the Kyrie seem somewhat uninvolved. But once the musicians reach the more extroverted and dramatic music of the Gloria, things really pick up. Fasolis isn't afraid of extreme tempos or dramatic gestures: for example, in the opening of the Crucifixus, where most Baroque orchestras play the opening chords solemnly and reverently, Fasolis hammers them like so many nails into a cross. The chorus and orchestra handle everything Fasolis tosses at them with aplomb; the soloists are excellent, with notably sweet singing by tenor Christoph Prégardien and bass Klaus Mertens and a gripping Agnus Dei by contralto Gloria Banditelli. This is a recording of a live performance-radio broadcast, so one can hear the occasional blemish, but there's more than enough excitement to make up for that. This record may not be as extraordinary as Philippe Herreweghe's full-price account, but it's far and away the best budget version--at the price, it's worth adding to any serious Baroque collection. --Matthew Westphal

Safe bet.......2006-05-21
The catalogue is filled with many great recordings of Bach's Mass in B.
Who needs another one?
But from all the great recordings I listened to and own there are only very few I listen to at a regular base: Herreweghe I and II, Christophers and this one.
I think it is because this versions are the most natural, musically.
When it comes to interpretations (I'm not suggesting I'm an expert, I only use my ears) there are far more interesting ones than my favorites mentioned.
A Parrott for instance, who uses one voice per part which as a result is very insightfull, the performance itself is superb too.
Gardiner who has a very rhythmic orientated reading, with clipped singing which has its peculiar dramatic effects.
But when I listen to music I don't necessarily want to "learn", I want to be moved by the beauty of the music, I do not want to listen to music too analytical.
Herreweghe is often called "middle of the road" and "safe"
True, but in this case I think these descriptions are a compliment rather than negative critique, you'll get music only and no forced view of how Bach should or could sound...the internet is full with forums where discussions about the number of singers Bach used or not used in his time are held...interesting, but not while I'm listening to music (per se).
Fasolis is like Herreweghe as natural as you can get, perhaps only the "Crucifixus" is different than any other I listened to, very staccato, but it works very well.
In comparison with Herreweghe Fasolis is more loose and spontaneous, which I like very much, but the fact that it is a live performance obviously had its influence, but that aside, in some respect I like Fasolis even better than Herreweghe.
Herreweghe is far more concentrated, but both have a natural way of phrasing the music.
Orchestra and soloists are superb, although the beginning of the openingchorus isn't very confident, but it's a live performance, and to me those tiny slips add something to the performance, call it involvement...my involvement, that of the listener.
The sound of the recording is excellent, warm with substance and pretty realistic, it seems nothing is polished or mixed afterwards, vocals sound spectacularly real.
Highly recommended.
Absolutely Superb!!!.......2004-10-14
I'm frankly surprised that there aren't numerous reviews for this recording. It is glorious in just about every way imaginable. I'm not a Bach expert but have listened to various recordings of the B Minor Mass over the years and have even sung in a few performances of it. This has to be one of the best Bach recordings I've ever heard. Get it and enjoy!!!

The Mastersinger.......2000-06-24
If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. In celebration of this great artist's 75th birthday we have here a set which includes the gems of his lieder repertoire, starting with those great Schubert cycles in their most vivid performances. Just listen to those early renditions of the Schone Mullerin or with Jorg Demus, or to Schuman's Dichterliebe cycle (with the same pianist). And you shall not miss the artistry of this most sensitive voice in full volume of Mahler lieder with piano and orchestral songs. And what about the Morike lieder by Hugo Wolf? Well, you shall probably wonder at that special cooperation between the singer and the Russian pianist Svitoslav Richter. It is a performance of lifetime, and so it is with the Wintereise of Schubert with Barnboim at the piano. Those who know the artistry of Fischer-Dieskau and even those who have already other recordings of those great works will not regret having this special set. For the newcomers to this great artist there will be a lot to discover, The music itself, sure, but mainly the art of interpratation. In this alone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau shine high and above all other singers.

Customer Reviews:
this is what bach intended.......2005-08-26
The performance captured in this landmark recording is its own best argument for the "period instrument" approach, because Harnoncourt's scholarly accuracy is placed entirely at the service of rendering Bach's voice as clearly and as compellingly as possible.
Other reviewers here have noted the meticulous research on performance history that went into constructing the various choral groupings Harnoncourt used. As the CD notes DO tell us, Bach also had very definite thoughts on the size and balance of instrumental ensembles. He didn't write for our massive, glossy-sounding modern string sections... nor did he write for metal flutes and plastic oboes. Over and above the issue of ensemble size, the period instruments simply SOUND better for this music: their rich, quirky sonorities are ideally suited to the winding and intricate musical lines Bach wrote for them (go figure!).
The B minor mass is a great human achievement, and this recording of it demonstrates why. I've played the closing "dona nobis pacem" for friends who thought Bach was "unemotional," and enjoyed just watching their eyes fill up (I love being right!). If I had to reduce my CD collection to a single album, this is unquestionably the one I would reach for.
A recording which changed Bach performance for ever.......2002-06-20
This was the recording which changed for ever the way we thought (and continue to think) about Bach performance. Since it is now but one of many "period instrument" performances, it is easy to lose sight of the overwhelming effect which this recording had on those hearing it for the first time in 1968 (I was one of the fortunate first to experience the overwhelming power of Bach's masterpiece revealed in this performance at the tender age of 11!). Many of the details which contributed towards making the original recording uniquely important have now been omitted in the documentation accompanying this re-issue (a far cry from the lavish booklet of the original LP release of 1968). First, although Harnoncourt is credited as conductor, the performance was actually directed by Hans Gillesberger, perhaps the most important of the directors of the post-war Vienna Boys' Choir. Harnoncourt led the Concentus Musicus Wien from the cello (as he did for many of the Bach choral recordings made for Telefunken in the '60's and '70's). Perhaps equally important, this recording was the brain-child of the great German producer for Telefunken, Wolf Erichson, whose SEON and later, Sony Vivarte recordings have continued to document the most important "period-instrument" performances to the present day. Among the vocal soloists were such great singers as Rotraud Hansmann (unjustly neglected by recording companies in later years), the wonderful Helen Watts (who also recorded the B-minor mass with Karl Munchinger and Johannes Somary), the exemplary Kurt Equiluz, still the greatest Bach tenor of our time, and the superlative Max van Egmond, whose standards have not (and probably will not) ever been surpassed (listen to the "Et in Spiritum sanctum" and you'll agree). Add to this the almost viscerally thrilling sound of the Viennese trebles, and you have one of the greatest (and most influential) recordings of all time. Also lost on this re-issue is the important detail that Harnoncourt used three different sized choirs for this recording (small: 16; medium: 24; large: 42). He matched the size of the accompanying instrumental forces to suit. Numerous other details added up to what was for its time a uniquely thorough attempt to do justice to Bach's transcendental work. It's true that there have been advances in period performance techniques in the 34 years since this recording appeared, but to hear this recording is to experience the B minor mass with the excitement of discovery. Just try the transition from the bass solo "Quoniam" to the "Cum sancto spiritu", and the "Confiteor" into the "Et expecto", and you'll see why this recording deserves to be considered one of the great performances of the 20th century, as much a tribute to the largely forgotten Hans Gillesberger as it is to Harnoncourt, without doubt one of the great interpreters of our time. Buy it! It still sounds truly amazing.
First period time B-minor Mass is still greatly competitive.......2001-06-04
Here we have Nicolaus Harnoncourts first recording of Bach's great Mass i b-minor, made in 1968. What's highly notable is that it's done with a small choir and orchestra, on period time instruments - making it one of the very first such recordings, that are so popular today. Fortunately the orchestra doesn't at all sound as annoyingly direct and obtrusive as with some more recent recordings - and that is a compliment to Mr Harnoncourt and his players. It also uses boys (the Wiener Sängerknaben) singing the choir's soprano and alto parts, making the upper register clean and transparent, although the solos are taken by women. So, the virtuosity somewhat lost by using boys is far compensated by more transparent textures.
The result is a light and airy performance, that still captures the many dynamic possibilities in this great music. It actually seems that smaller ensemble makes for wider dynamics, not lesser. The opening Kyrie, for example, strikes you with both power and good timing in the choir - how often are those well combined? In the middle of the following 'Gloria' the work calms down, making you almost jump out of your chair when the playfull final 'Cum sancto spiritu' starts. And the rest of the performance follows this pattern - light textures combined with great dynamics in the choir and the orchestra. The powerful 'Sanctus' is a great example of this - although massive and powerful, it is never blurry.
The soloists then? Well, here it's not as easy to make a oneway praise. The alto, sung by Helen Watts, is great and stands out as the clearly best soloist - beautiful timbre and very clean sounding. The bass of van Egmond is also very well done - not sounding heavy or 'bumpy' as basses sometimes does, his performance is smooth both in higher and lower registers. The rest of the soloists sounds nice and neat, but somewhat unpersonal. The 1st soprano of Rotraud Hansmann, has a not wide, but somewhat penetrating vibrato. All together though the soloparts are nicely judged, especially in some of the duets. I can't find any greater drawbacks in this recording - it might lose some nerve in the more quiet parts, the Vienna boys are a little too audible especially compared to the basses and the soloists aren't an all through first rate line-up, but I think that's well compensated by the clear and transparent textures, and the obvious feeling of an ensemble that's heading towards the same goal.
I bought this record since the church choir that I sing in was going to perform parts of this lovely mass. I went around among many record dealers and listened through about ten different versions, amongst them Gardiner's, Christopher's, Karajan's, Marriner's a.s.o. I preferred this 'cause I thought it to be the most natural sounding. No strange manners from any part of the ensemble. Not to be forgotten, it's also great value compared to many other popular versions. Recommended!
Still the Best.......2000-03-29
Of the five recordings of the B-minor Mass that I have, this is the one I prefer. I may be prejudiced since it was my introduction to Bach's vocal works. Recorded in 1968, the performance inaugurated the "early music" movement in which the accretions of later centuries of performance practice were removed. The original instruments seemed harsh to ears accustomed to the modern orchestra, but they also sounded fresh and vital. The small choir (for the time) made the words feel close and personal. There's been a great deal of argument about the authenticity of "authentic" performances, but Harnoncourt provided an alternative that rejuvenated an old warhorse.
As was considered typical of German practice, the alto chorus is sung by boys rather than countertenors or contraltos. This is something of a personal taste; I like the woody, oboeish sound of boy altos, and their presence on the recording is one reason for my preference.
It's Become a Part of Me.......2000-03-12
The first recording on CD I bought. After being exposed mostly only to pop music, the B-Minor Mass seemed completely alien to me when I first listened to it, but after repeated listenings I began to understand the profundity of feeling that forms the foundation of art music, and now I couldn't imagine life without it. I paid over $40 for a copy in 1984; it's quite a bargain now at less than $20. The performance is from 1968. Of five performances I now own, it's still my favorite. The combination of boys singing the soprano and alto chorus parts and adult singers for the bass and tenor chorus and the solo parts is the best to my ear. The performance is clear and vigorous, and soloists are perfectly suited. It was one of the first original instrument performances by Harnoncourt available; almost the beginning of the early music movement. If I had to get rid of all my CDs but one, this the one I would keep.

Album Description
Celestial Christmas is a richly textured musical tapestry that gracefully weaves together selections of sacred choral and instrumental music from the High Renaissance and Baroque eras. The recording journeys through moods of tenderness, solemnity, and joy, as expressed by Johann Sebastian Bach in the numerous choral selections from his Christmas oratorios and cantatas, including the beloved 'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring' and 'Sleepers, Awake!' as well as the prayer for peace from the glorious 'Mass in B Minor'. Bach is also the featured composer in the many joyful instrumental pieces for harpsichord, flute, and organ. Also included in the program are many exceptionally beautiful pieces, both choral and instrumental, by Claudio Monteverdi, Orlande de Lassus, Henry Purcell, William Lawes, Carlo Farina, Johann Pachelbel, and Georg Friedrich Händel.
