Siberia, usually associated with ice and prison camps, has recently taken up a new export: violin prodigies. One of these is Vadim Repin, now 27 years old, and he is certainly fabulous. His technical virtuosity is stunning and effortless, his facility unlimited; this tempts him to favor extremely fast tempi that sometimes become hectic, but the runs are always crystal-clear. Equally striking is his tone: radiant, warm, and ravishingly beautiful; it is pure in every register, on every string, under all circumstances, and capable of a great variety of nuance and inflection. All this formidable instrumental equipment serves the expressive demands of the music. Creating and changing moods with natural poise, he gives every movement of the Lalo its own character, playing with charm, mischievousness, humor, wistful nostalgia, somber inwardness, intensity, fire. The Chausson projects a fine blend of impressionistic languor and passionate abandon; the Ravel is a brilliant romp with idiomatic gypsy flair. The orchestra supplies bursts of color and supports him well, but the tutti passages are often so loud that it is wise to keep a finger on the volume button. --Edith Eisler

4 out of 5 stars More Sensational Stern, More Silly Sony.......2003-10-04

Volume 8 of the "Isaac Stern: A Life in Music" series finds the great violinist tackling a variety of French Orchestral Works. The first CD of this two-disc set begins with Lalo's "Symphonie Espagnole," 1967 performance with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Stern previously recorded the Lalo with Ormandy in 1956 (that version appears on "The Early Concerto Recordings, Volume 2" -- see my review), and this '67 rendition is taken at a slightly slower tempo, but is equally enjoyable. Disc one concludes with an average account of Saint-Saens' 3rd Violin Concerto with Daniel Barenboim and the Orchestre de Paris from 1976.

Disc two is where I really have problems with this collection. The second CD features shorter works for violin and orchestra, including some "encore" pieces, all performed excellently. I should know because I've heard half of them on other CDs previously! The very same recordings featured in this title (Volume 8) of Saraste's "Zigeunerweisen," Saint-Saens' "Introduction et Rodno Capriccioso," and Ravel's "Tzigane" have already been available (and continue to be) on Isaac Stern's "Early Concerto Recordings" volumes. This redundancy is not an isolated incident as it has happened with other titles in the "Life in Music" series. I suppose duplication is unavoidable for serious collectors, but it is nonetheless annoying. As I have said before -- Sony, there must have been a better way!

In this formidable album you will realize Artur Grumiaux is in top form. His lyricism and expressiveness is quite evident since the first bar you listened. He possessed that admirable and inimitable phrasing, supported by the most fervent passion and commitment.

This is a fundamental and excellent selection of his interpretative art. His Lekeu and Debussy violin Sonata do not know about rivals, even the elapsed time. I miss the exclusion of his Häendel works Op. 1 and several violin Sonatas of Mozart (specially the K. 376), but this artistic document well deserves its immediate acquisition.

Grumiaux was -undeniably- the best Belgium violinist after Ysaye, and one of the eternal icons of this instrument.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Recordings Rescued From The Vaults.......2003-06-09

Now that Decca, Philips and Deutsche Grammophon, among others, are all part of Universal, we have seen some interesting things happen, and not all of them bad. What I'm referring to in this case is the new "Original Masters" Limited Edition Box Set series. Finally, the classical music world has taken a page out of the jazz reissue handbook -- put out a quality product featuring rare recordings but make its availability limited, and people will snatch it up. In the "Original Masters" series, first DG and now Decca/Philips have each reissued five box sets, of 4 to 7 CDs each, in distinguished, space-saving slim paper boxes, though the style of packaging is different. The DG sets feature 50s style graphics design on their covers, while the Decca/Philips ones have a distinctive rainbow/spectrum pattern on the spines and banners, and a black-and-white photo of the artist in question on the face of the box.

This particular set features the historical Philips recordings of the great violinist Arthur Grumiaux from 1953-62. As the track information is non-existent above, I will try to be of assistance. The first two discs contain the complete Mozart Violin Concertos, including K271i which is now regarded as doubtful (to be composed by Mozart), with Bernhard Paumgartner and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra (VSO) from 1953-55. It is wonderful to compare these performances to Grumiaux's stereo Mozart VC Cycle on Philips with Colin Davis (see my review). Disc three is all works for violin and piano (with pianist Istvan Hajdu) -- Debussy, Ravel and Faure (No. 1) Sonatas, Ravel's Piece en Forme de Habanera, Faure's Les Berceaux, Saraste's Zigeunerweisen, Fiocco's Allegro, Granados' Andaluza, and Albeniz's Tango (all from 1962). Disc four features shorter works for violin and orchestra -- Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole, Chausson's Poeme, Ravel's Tzigane, Saint-Saens' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, and Havanaise. All are with Jean Fournet conducting the Orchestre des Concerts Lamoureux (OCL) from 1954, except the Capriccioso which is 1956. Lastly, CD Five returns to concertos with the Mendelssohn (Rudolf Moralt/VSO, 1954) and Paganini No. 4 (Franco Gallini/OCL, 1954), and concludes with Paganini's I Palpiti and Le Streghe with pianist Riccardo Castagnone (1958). Despite the fact that the recordings on four of the five discs are in mono (CD3 is in stereo), the first rate performances more than compensate for any audio shortcomings. Well, I guess the consolidation of the music industry isn't so bad after all, as long as I can look forward to more reissues like this.

5 out of 5 stars Sizzling Repin in Classic French Works for the Violin, etc........2003-01-18

Vadim Repin's warm, vibrant tone sizzles in this excellent recording of three works for the violin and orchestra from three of France's greatest late 19th and early 20th Century composers. His performance of Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole is among the most passionate, distinguished versions I have yet heard of this work, replete with exquisite technical pyrotechnics from his violin bow and a warm, lush tone. The same holds true for his playing of Chausson's Poeme, while his performance of Ravel's Tzigane is just as fine. He is blessed with Kent Nagano's excellent conducting, providing brilliant flashes of orchestral color and tone from the London Symphony Orchestra. However, be warned that Teldec's sound engineers have emphasized the orchestra's playing in some passages, so that Repin's perfomance is occasionally overshadowed by the orchestra's. Still it is a splendid CD to acquire if only to have a fine example of Repin's playing.

    4 out of 5 stars Love It.......2002-03-20

This is a great CD. Repin is a great player, and he does justice to all the compositions. The Lalo is wonderfull, although the last movement is not totaly clean, the style is great and it is a great listen. The Chausson does not have enough tension, and the overdone reverbration is obvious. The Ravel is strong, but it doesn't beat the Heifetz version!

1 out of 5 stars The Dancer has a Broken Left Leg a Sprained Right Ankle........2002-02-04

I have listened only to the Lalo, not having mustered the courage to try the rest. This is the most disappointing performance, recorded, live or dreamt I have experienced in the last ten years. It is a good example of either bad or good engineering. If you like to play with equalizations and special reverb effects, this may be your cup of tea, because the orchestra overbalances the violin throughout. In fact, nearly every measure sounds remastered. The opening which usually, in two measures, announces a VIOLIN and the promise of all its colors and potential sounds as if it is coming from a cave down by a dry riverbed in Afghanistan. The added reverberation is everybody's favorite small town gymnasium. There is no ensemble or evident consultation in this recording. Mr. Repin might as well have played alone or with an old 78 add a part record. Lalo gives a small direction "molto ritmico". That means very strict rhythm. The 1st Mvt. is all over the place. Overall, the orchestra is jerky, dragging its broken leg and hopping on its sprained one. There is no Spanish grace or charm and absolutely no Moorish schmaltz. Where a marcato might be okay in the third Mvt, Mr. Repin can't decide whether he wants the main theme legato or detached. Mr. Lalo, however, made it pretty clear. Repin sizzles in the last Mvt., but he and the orchestra are never together, and Lalo's orchestration is a wonder of the literature. What wasted virtuosity. The orchestra's entrance is actually muddy. Don't waste money on this thing; get a recording of first year Suzuki students doing Twinkle-Twinkle instead.

    Album Description

"The recordings are uniformly clear and rich in detail--truly amazing for their vintage. At Vox's prices, a collection like this one by an estimable violinist like Rosand is well-nigh irresistible. Think of it this way: for almost nothing, you can get one of the best Lalos ever recorded and about an hour and a half of music absolutely free. A phenomenal bargain!" 4 out of 5 stars Basement Prices for Penthouse Music.......2007-05-13

Aaron Rosand's CDs are always cheap - yet he's made some of the greatest recordings of standard literature, and often the ONLY recordings of non-standard literature. This disc is like a miniature treasure trove. It features the Saint Saens concerto #3 and the Lalo - and these two recordings are definitely among the aforementioned best out there. Rosand's sound is like that of a vintage bottle of wine. Although he never became a household name, his playing reveals a polished, refined quality that lends itself especially well to romantic works such as these.
His approach brings out all the sparkling Spanishness of the Lalo. The Saint Saens has many pleasing moments; to mention just one, the section of that closes the second movement is perfectly-paced and the harmonics are crystal clear. So many recordings and performances of this piece are played with an almost brusque "Tchaikovskyan" style; Rosand doesn't go overboard and articulates the lyrical sections especially well.
The Sibelius Humoresques are delightful; these six small pieces are never played on concert programs because they simply don't match up well against a concerto or a symphony. On a less positive note, Rosand's Chausson "Poeme" is probably the longest one I've ever heard, at over 17 minutes. The tempos drag considerably and although Rosand's big tone comes forth nicely, the opening cadenza and ending are just too slow. Like Grumiaux's recording of Ravel's "Tzigane", Rosand's is also very padded and lacking the necessary abandonment. He plays it very straightforwardly, hitting all the notes and never deviating far from the printed page. Berlioz's "Reverie & Caprice" and Saint Saens' "Havanaise" get good readings here. But the Lalo and Saint Saens concerto definitely make this 2-CD set well worth the investment. Four stars.

    4 out of 5 stars Phenomenal bargain.......2002-07-15

Aaron Rosand is one of the most overlooked fiddlers of our day. His Sibelius is fresh, with Rosand capturing a musical snapshot of the dark, cool Finnish landscape. The Lalo is stylish and impeccably executed. The remainder of the discs, while well played, does not quite reach the excellence of exalted interpretations by Heifetz in the Havanaise and Rondo Capriccioso, or Oistrakh in the Poeme. Occassionally there is some strain in Rosand's slender tone, some of which may be attributable to the sonic limitations of the recording. Climaxes in the Chausson and Berlioz and hindered by such technological limitations. But beneath such problems is exciting and vibrant playing well worth the unusually affordable price.
