This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

If you enjoy James Galway, you should get this CD. It is wonderful easy listening music for when you are doing something else like reading. It is not as exciting as some of his other CDs but just as good. All the songs are beautiful and will be greatly appreciated.

I don't understand why Jules Massenet's "Meditation" from Thais is on Teldec's Tearjerker album and not on it's Meditation disc. Or why Maria-Joao Pires's performance of Schubert's Impromptu, Op. 90, No. 3 in G-flat major, is a tearjerker and not a Stressbuster (as another disc in this series is dubbed). Of course, such reasoning is too sophisticated for this context. The decent performances here feature music by Chopin, Puccini, Donizetti, Tchaikovsky, and others. What jerks my tears is the fact that a package like this is apparently needed to draw listeners to classical music. --Gwendolyn Freed

Another example of great playing.......2007-01-10

This CD of Sergei's playing is very nice. Him and his sister are a fine duo that can make very beautiful music with just the Piano and Trumpet/Flugelhorn. This CD shows Sergei's expressive and lyrical side rather than his great technical ability. The music on this CD is something you would want to sit in front of a fire and really relax. I would recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys Classical music, not just to trumpet players.

Looking for Elegie. It was the correct piece, but I would have preferred it done with violins etc. Elegie was my mother's favorite piece.

Poetic.......2000-06-07

Sergei Nakariakov is one of the greatest trumpet players alive today. His repertoire is enormous and keeps growing. He is featured here on a disc of songs and lieder from the vocal repertoire. Who needs words? His trumpet speaks as clear as any voice, and is as touching as any words could be. The music is brilliant anyway. He someone makes it all a little more special.

The Schubert Fantasy in F-minor, along with the Brahms Variations on Haydn theme and six Hungarian Dances, are old chestnuts. What adds to the repertoire is the Prelude from Die Meistersinger von Nuernberg (R. Wagner) arranged by C. Tausig & A. Horn. Also, the Liszt Rakoczy March, arranged for two pianos by Erno Szegedi. This allows the listener to hear familiar themes from a different perspective.

Better than the real thing?.......2005-01-31

Liszt was a devourer of anything great that came along. Typically, his transcriptions and paraphrases tell you that the original piece is itself a masterpiece. This Schwanengesang is no exception. It shows that great music doesn't need words and as much as one may like the cycle's poems, its music perfectly stands alone. And Liszt's transcription is so good that, to use a horrible contemporary expression, he really does add value to it and makes it a piece in its own right (unlike Brahms's transcription of the Bach Chaconne but like Busoni's)

Now Chiu: energetic, passionate, virtuosic ... all three qualities that are sadly absent from Leslie Howard's encyclopaedic but plodding renditions on Hyperion (he even plays two versions of the transcription). Perhaps one may have hoped for slightly more obvious sensibility from Chiu but his drive saves his enterprise. Highly recommended. If someone is looking alone for the famous Ständchen, the "Horowitz at Home" CD on DG comprises the best imaginable with the famous echoes played with unbelievable wizardry! And this Horowitz CD also includes two Soirées de Vienne that shows us what piano playing should be. But back to Chiu: buy it! No buy both the Chiu and the Horowitz!

Poetry on the Piano.......2001-04-27

I bought this disk after I had seen Frederic Chiu perform these pieces live. I confess that my enjoyment in listening to the disk is enhanced by the memory of the performance. It is difficult to imagine how these songs can be expressed with just a single piano, but Mr. Chiu's playing is expressive of the poetry. It is reminiscent to me of arts and crafts style architecture, spare but rich in detail.

The life of Teresa Sterne is as noteworthy as the label she once presided over (Nonesuch). As a child prodigy, she successfully filled world-class auditoriums in the 1940s with audiences eager to hear her piano playing. Then, inexplicably, Sterne abandoned her concert career only to resurface as the leader behind Nonesuch Records in the late 1960s, turning the budget classical label into one of the more adventurous and consistently rewarding labels around (and generally keeping quiet about her earlier fame). Half of this double-CD tribute collects recordings of a teenage Sterne at the keyboard; the second disc is devoted to some of the finest recordings from her Nonesuch tenure (1965-1979)--both are engrossing.

Ignore the surface noise on Sterne's disc (no small task on the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20), and you'll hear a young pianist in fine form--she is expressive, and boasts crisp articulation and fine technique. She dances through Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 13 with riveting intensity; on Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 (with the New York Philharmonic), she shows a sensitive but no less virtuosic side. On the second disc, we get a virtual best-of for Nonesuch Records, including tracks by Joshua Rifkin, Paul Jacobs, and William Bolcom. Hard to imagine anyone doing it these days, but in one five-year period (1970-1975), Nonesuch released albums featuring the music of Stephen Foster, Edgar Varese, George Crumb, and a platter of Bulgarian folk tunes. They're all here. Now battling Lou Gehrig's disease, Sterne herself may be unable to celebrate this release, but for anyone who has treasured a release from Nonesuch's glory days, it's a moving tribute. --Jason Verlinde

Liszt imbues Rossini.......2006-07-01

In Volume 7 of Naxos' Complete Piano Music of Liszt, we are given a nice selection of Rossini transcriptions, which played under Kemal Gekic, sound beautiful, colorful, brilliant, melancholic, and sometimes explosive.

The 'Soirees musicales' are fine pieces. Most are short (3-4 minutes) and a couple are up to 7 minutes long. Not all are at first memorable, but some are quite exquisite. My favorites are 'La gita in gondola' 'La pastorella dell'Alpi' 'La danza' 'La serenata' and 'Li marinari.' Under Liszt's auspicious fingers we hear Rossini's beautiful melodies completely illuminated. Most of these pieces stay on the safe side. That is, they are mostly calm, which is unusual for Liszt at this time in his life. But this is owing to his faithfulness to the score that he never abuses the music of the original. There are a few pieces that Liszt will impassion with some crazy octaves or arpeggios (La Danza for example). In a way, I wish Liszt did this to more of them, as the excitement he arouses with his virtuosic embellishments could add to each piece. The last of the musicales 'Li marinari' is a gem by itself. It musically depicts sailors on the seas amidst a storm, clinging for life.

If the 'Soirees' lost their steam a bit, the last piece, an operatic transcription of Rossini's "Guillaume Tell" overture is breathtaking. I agree with the previous reviewers that Kemal Gekic brings a new standard for playing this magnificent work. The composition itself is charming and grandiose. It sways lightly at times in bel canto fashion, and then storms in a whirlwind of passionate piano music. It rises in sound, and then peacefully calms itself, and always captivates with its excellent melodies. Speaking of excellent melodies, most would know the famous tune of this work as "The Lone Ranger" theme. Hearing that tune in a Liszt piano transcription promises to ravish you with its lustrous vigor and bravura.

Bottom line: Kemal Gekic does a marvelous job at playing these Liszt rarities, and to reward the listeners patience, he executes the William Tell Overture transcription with dazzling virtuosity and passion.

Technique is the Key.......2005-08-19

This is pure fun. Rossini's originals, from his collection "Sins of My Old Age," are charming, disarming, tongue-firmly-in-cheek gems. They translate well in Liszt's piano transcriptions. But the truly astounding piece is Liszt's piano reduction of the William Tell Overture. "Reduction' is hardly the word because the piano--and pianist, of course--works overtime to create an quasi-orchestral sweep and grandeur. It should be illegal to play this piece if you have a technique less assured than Kemal Gekic's. That's because the only way to make it sound truly breathtaking, as it does here, is to make the piece sound easy as well, which it decidedly is not. Well, maybe it was for Liszt....

A fine recording from Naxos. The piano seems to be at a sensible remove, as if you're sitting halfway back in a small hall, creating a satisfyingly realistic listening experience--just right for the overture; it can fill a hall with its volume of sound!

Colour and virtuosity.......2000-10-21

I've generally enjoyed the Naxos Liszt series. Its been pretty consistent. This is one of the two finest disks in the series, the other being Arnaldo Cohen's electric contribution. Gekic is a Yugoslavian pianist, with a mesmeric sense of colour and an indefatigable technique. He plays the infrequently recorded Rossini transcriptions. The Soirees are individually quite slight, but they have grace and charm. La Danza is well known in its original form, and is presented with tremendous bouyancy. The final Soiree, La Marinari, has a convincing feel of apotheosis, a sense of repose beyond the storm. It raises the curtain superbly on Gekic's overwhelming version of the Overture, which is played variously with charm, terror, and, in the final gallop, a hellbent abandon. Gekic has all of the glittering technique of the finest Russian pianists, but couples it with an uncanny intuition for the work's soul. This is a most rewarding disk.

AMAZING.......2000-08-13

This recording is definitely one of the best I bought. Liszt's transcriptions of twelve Rossini's pieces are really brilliant piano pieces. They are so romantic, sensual, full of poetry and rhythm. Listening these beautiful pieces you will relax your heart and soul and you'll whish to dance. If you like Chopin's waltzes you will adore this CD.

Kemal Gekic is a very good piano player and I have a privilege to listen his playing in Sarajevo. So many years after I still remember how excited I was. Hi charmed audience with individual and spectacular playing.
