Good points far outweigh some minor deficiencies.......2005-11-29
This whole set is gorgeous (although the second cd gets a bit tediuos unless you really like early music), and Emma Kirkby has one the most beautiful, distinctive soprano voices I have ever heard, one can't help but like her, but hard-core critics beware, her intonation is not flawless, especially in the "Alleluia" of the "Nulla in Mundo" cycle, one can hear her go off on some of the high notes. Like I said, it's beautiful, but that does bother me personally every time I listen to that track. But buy it anyway.
More of Emma Please.......2004-01-02
I would have given this CD 5 stars if Emma Kirkby had sung all of the cantatas on Disc 2. Unfortunately, most of the cantatas on this disc are sung by Catherine Bott, who in my musically illiterate opinion, sounds more like a mezzo-soprano than a true soprano. Kirkby on the other hand is a legend in early music and brings her trademark "purity of sound" to this recording. The gorgeous duet she sings with Judith Nelson on disc 1 is alone worth the price of this set (that's probably a slight exaggeration, but it's pretty damn good anyway).
Getting away from Kirkby a sec, the Gloria on CD 1 is indeed glorious. The choral movements are sharp and lively, having that quality of all good choirs of sounding not quite of this earth. Listening to this CD after a couple of beers, you could be forgiven for thinking that your house has been invaded by cherubim and seraphim.
I'm not a huge fan of counter tenors (probably something to do with feeling threatened about my latent homosexuality or being emasculated) so I can't really provide any worthwhile comments about the Nisi Dominus which is a showcase of James Bowman's skills. Bowman has pretty impressive credentials, so I'm not about to get stuck into him. Suffice to say, I usually skip thru tracks 13-18 on disc 1.
amazingly beautiful.......2003-04-27
This CD is worth buying just for "Nulla in mundo pax sincera." This is one of the most beautiful vivaldi motets and is simply heavenly. I absoluterly love it!
Glorious cantatas on the second CD.......2002-06-14
For once the 5 stars are worth it. The choral works on disc 1 are masterful benchmark interpretations of the pick of Vivaldi's sacred output. What makes it a real bargain however is the second disc of cantatas - one of Emma Kirkby and Catherine Bott's finest achievements on the old L'Oiseau Lyre label. Couple this with full texts and an intelligent booklet. Wonderful!
a "must have".......2002-05-11
This is the ONLY version of "Gloria" you should own! The Choir of Christ Church is amazing and truly does justice to Vivaldi's work.

Jaroussky has a gifted voice.......2006-06-21
In early polyphony, the contratenor was a voice part in melodic counterpoint against the tenor. It was written roughly in the same range as the tenor. In the 15th century, contratenor split into contratenor altus and contratenor bassus, which were respectively above and below the tenor. By the 16th century, however, the term became obsolete as Latin lost popularity. In Italy, the contratenor altus became simply alto; in France, haute-contre; in England, countertenor.
Countertenors remained in the niche of sacred vocal music, in part because women were banned from singing in church services. However, they were not prominently featured in the rise of opera. Handel would occasionally write a part specifically for a countertenor, but the castrati were vastly more popular. As a result, the countertenor voice was found only in cathedral choirs and the occasional early music ensemble for a few centuries.
The most visible icon of the countertenor revival was Alfred Deller, an English singer and champion of authentic early music performance. Deller initially called himself an "alto", but his collaborator Michael Tippett recommended the archaic term "countertenor" to describe his voice. In the 1950s and 60s, his group, the Deller Consort, increased audiences' awareness of (and appreciation for) renaissance and Baroque music. Benjamin Britten wrote the role of Oberon in his setting of A Midsummer Night's Dream for him. Deller was the first modern countertenor to achieve such celebrity, but he would not be the last. Russell Oberlin was Deller's American counterpart, and another early music pioneer. Oberlin's success was entirely unprecedented in a country that had seen little exposure to anything before Bach, and it paved the way for the next generation of countertenors.
Today, countertenors are much in demand in many forms of classical music. In opera, many roles originally written for castrati are now sung by countertenors, as are some trouser roles. Modern composers write countertenor parts, both in choral works and opera. Men's choral groups such as Chanticleer and the King's Singers employ them to great effect in a variety of genres, including early music, gospel, and even folk songs.
A few countertenors have a range comparable to a female soprano. They are usually called sopranists, and often sing higher castrato arias. As there are not many of them, Jaroussky is the latest countertenor and should the word "gifted" for him suits his special talent, this CD deserves a 4 star.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-05-20
The vocal selections on this disc include 2 arias from Vivaldi operas. However, at that time the cantatas and the operas were very closely aligned using the same instrumentation and truthfully it would be difficult to tell the difference between them had I not been previously informed. Jaroussky has excellent vocal technique;in fact in some passages he astounds the listener. His aria :Cor ingrato dispietato (from an opera) displays amazing breath control and clean clear notes. If there is something lacking it is in slow passages that demand more intensity and emotion; age and experience will certainly help!!!And his voice sounds better when the music has a high tessitura. He's a fresh new voice in the world of countertenors. My appreciation knows no bounds for the "Ensemble Artaserse";they are truly excellent and skilled on their instruments; wonderful to hear. This is really a great disc!!!!
Jaroussky is exceptional.......2005-09-07
Jaroussky's singing adds to the growing interest in Vivaldian opera. His performance of "Qual Dopo ..." is both a demonstration of the great technique and artistry of his beautiful voice. For those curious to explore his singing range, try his masterful deliverance of arias such as "Tu m'offendi",from La Verita en Cimento, and "Sol da te", from "Orlando Furioso" where he honors the composer with the nuances, adornments, and melodic draws of his voice. This CD would have showcased the cantata genre much better had the musical selection been more diverse in note and tempo. Nonetheless, Jaroussky is at his best!
A pleasant surprise.......2005-05-20
Countertenor is not this reviewer's favorite range of male singer. That's probably so because it is both unfamiliar and underperformed and, when it is sung, never comes off as quite natural to the singer himself. In many respects, it really is an outdated male vocal range that should have gone the way of castrati. Interestingly, it seems to going in just the opposite direction. At least Virgin Classics must think so because last month it released a new CD by countertenor Philippe Jaroussky singing Vivaldi Cantatas, with the Ensemble Artaserse -- and it is surprisingly good. The CD consists of a couple quite beautiful period solo ensemble selections, theorbo etc. (See cut #9 "Prelude to Vivaldi") and vocals that demonstrate the best of what a countertenor sounds like, most notably Piangero Sinche L'onda, Ruggiero. Mr. Jaroussky's voice is both agile and open and his diction is punctuated and enhanced by a smooth delivery that is passionate enough, such that each piece comes off as a personal story that truly captivates the listener. An added plus is the fact that the thematic organization of this CD is even. In other words, you won't be reaching for the "skip" button here. The quality of the recording, too, is excellent. Although many listeners prefer the live aspect of concert performances, the very thing that attracts, can also produce a hollow, almost metallic sound in a live hall. In Cantatas, you won't find any unevenness or harsh selections. You might even find that you are pleasantly surprised by how intriguing it is.
Another Fine Countertenor Lights Up The World!.......2005-04-13
This exciting recording of Vivaldi cantatas for solo voice and instrumental ensemble is one of the more compelling releases of the year to date! While the music of the glorious Venetian Antonio Vivaldi is well known, especially the standard repertoire `The Four Seasons' and the choral works and chamber works - even some operas - the cantatas are rarely performed and this CD of his best ones should change that.
Philippe Jaroussky is yet another fine countertenor who is rather recent on the scene. With the growing popularity of musicians courageous and gifted enough to become successful in the countertenor repertoire (just pause for a moment and think of the significant number a star quality countertenors on the stages today), the numerous pieces for this range of voice continue to appear. Vivaldi's cantatas are refined, beautifully embellished, demanding consummate artistry of not only the high hurdles for the voice but also for the accompanying forces. Jaroussky seems to have endless breath, singing the long extended lines with total ease. His embellishments alter with each da capo as to the period born! This is a voice a great power and warmth and one that feels married to the texts.
Providing brilliant collaboration is the Ensemble Artaserse and period instruments. The variety of color is awe-inspiring and the technique of these unique musicians is impeccable. In their solo portions they produce a richly elegant - yes, Venetian sound. And in tandem with Jaroussky the complete effect is one of single purpose, line, and harmony.
This is a new CD to treasure and the sampling is generous. For this reviewer this is a new repertoire to explore and it would be difficult to imagine forces better suited to these treasures than those on this CD. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 05

Great music, great performances.......2006-11-17
Herreweghe brings aspiration and joy to these "Lutheran" masses, rather than dour piety. They are musically moving even to a non-religious listener. These are first-rate performances. Be careful, however, if you have been buying Bach disks for many years; this box of 4 CDs includes re-releases of recordings as old as 1990. Thus you may find, as I did, that you are buying performances you already own, with different cover art.
Radiant!.......2004-02-20
This is one of the finest quality budget deals I have come across in the Baroque music realm. A nice 4-CD sampling of Bach's cantatas (BWV 39, 73, 93, 105, 107 and 131) from his Leipzig period (1723-1726) and the four "Lutheran" masses from the 1730s. The latter follow hot on the heals of the B Minor mass (BMV 232) and are especially welcome.
Herreweghe is one of my favorite Baroque conductors, finding, as he does, a vitality and vibrancy in his period instrumentation. The musicians and soloists of the Ghent-based Collegium are of uniformly fine quality and the recording is up to Virgin's excellent standards.
If you own Herreweghe's stunning version of the Mass in B Minor, buy this. You won't be disappointed. I would've paid full price for a collection this sublime.

IT'S THE CHRISTMAS SEASON WITH J.S.......2006-03-20
In this 5th installment (Actually Volume 14) of the Gardiner Bach Pilgrimage, it is the Christmas Season to be celebrated with Johann. In this 1-disc installment, we hear cantatas written by J.S. Bach for Christmas time. These Cantatas have always been out-performed by the "Christmas Oratorio".. What's the reason for that, I will never know. The cantatas contained in Volume 14 find dear Johann at his very BEST; they are filled with hope, joy (dare I say) and bounce reflective of the season. All of the aforesaid descriptions are very evident especially in the cantata "Unser Mund sei voll Lachens" BWV 110. As I've noted profusely in my previous reviews, on this board, of the other four installments, I find this enterprise of Gardiner to be outstanding in every way. He along with the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque soloist perform Bach's cantatas gloriously. Volume 14 is no exception; it contains some beautiful music. This volume was recorded in New York and all of the participants perform magnificently! The Tenor and Bass have the most solos to perform and they are astounding.
Once again, James Gilchrist, the tenor is astounding-listen to his arias in Tracts 3, 8 and 22-wow! Peter Harvey, the bass is very good also-listen to tracts 10 and 16-they are wonderful! The sopranos, Katharine Fuge and Joanne Lunn singing their duets with the tenor and alto beautifully-those duets are simply fantastic. Just in case you've read my reviews of the other releases in this series, I am still very much enjoying countertenors Robin Tyson and William Towers-they are really very good. In fact, I loved this release!
Although, I listened to this recording about three months after the holidays, it succeeded in putting me in a rather festive mood. If you want to hear some J.S. Bach in his substantial glory, buy this album of his Cantatas. (do read the previous reviewer's magnificent summary of the contents pf Volume14.) By the way, the New York audiance must have been very healthy too; I heard not one sneeze or cough out of them--in the dead of winter too--i wonder what's their secret?
Cantatas on disc by BWV # & name........2006-01-12
This is not a review but merely a helper for potential buyers whom recognize Bach's cantatas by BWV # with the name. This disc (the first issue of a single disc) is the continuation of Gardiner's "Bach Cantata Pilgrimage." The CD is produced with utmost quality in sound, however it is packaged in an awkward cardboard case.
The cantatas on this set by BWV # and Name:
BWV 91, Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ
BWV 121, Christum wir sollen loben schon
BWV 40, Dazu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes
BWV 110, Unser Mund sei voll Lachens
Happy listening!

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-07-22
This is a four disc set that includes cantatas by:Alessandro Scarlatti-Caldara-Handel and Giovanni Bonancini. What a treasure trove of music!!!!The cantata, to some extent, is a development from the madrigal that appeared in Italy at the start of the seventeenth century. While the madrigal was refined and delicate, the cantata evolved because composers felt the need to introduce a dramatic narrative element into vocal chamber music and thusly the music took a lighter, wittier turn.Scarlatti is considered as one if the initiators, and also one of the reformers of this genre, whose outlines he established. In his cantatas for a single solo voice and continuo,Scarlatti treats the latter as a true partner of the voice. Caldara, who was Scarlatti's contemporary, played a large part in the development of the chamber cantata for one to five voices. Bonancini, who was essentially centered on opera, nonetheless wrote innumerable cantatas for one or more soloists. Handel's stay in Italy between the years 1706 and 1710 resulted in a time of intense creative activity, and he quite naturally gravitated towards the cantata. One of my favorites of Handels on this disc is:"Splenda l'alba in oriente", Lesne does a very learned and skillful renditon of this music. The lightness of his countertenor voice suits this genre very well. He has good diction and a nice emotional response to the varying moods of the music. Sandrine Piau (soprano) does a nice job of blending and complementing the countertenor tone quality. All in all it's a most enjoyable and varied listening experience.
Wonderfully Sensitive.......2006-01-20
I want to just say that being a countertenor, it's hard to find a partner who can counter your unique tone quality and timbre. Sandrine Piau is one of the best period sopranos I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. The most pure and beautiful tone you can imagine. She plays off Gerard Lesne as if they are one voice, yet still seperate entities in their roles as musical indivuals in this recording. The selections are nothing short of amazing, and had me hooked from the very first track. Every once of energy has been given to the sensitivity of this unworldly pure music. The Handel pieces are a rare find and a surprise to those who think they know G.F. Handel like the back of their hand. And of course Gerard Lesne is one of the most celebrated countertenors on the stage today. His sound is unique yet still beautiful in that he is keen to preserve the music in its intended context. This recording is an amazing find for those who can't get enough of the countertenor sound, and can't find many recordings of Caldara, and Bonocini.
Dellightful Baroque performances from a masterful contralto.......2004-03-29
One wonders how Virgin Classics manages to produce and market these "Pleasure 4" 4-CD sets for such low prices, but prospective buyers need not worry that they might be getting an inferior product. While an avid lover of Baroque music, before buying this set I had never been aware of contralto Gérard Lesne's name, though I soon noticed that it appears on a number of disks that I already owned--along with the names of great Baroque maestros like Philippe Herreweghe and William Christie and outstanding performers like Fabio Bondi and Véronique Gens. The discography of Lesne and his Il Seminario Musicale is nothing short of astounding in quantity and range, including many disks that have received rave reviews from Amazon reviewers and customers. Lesne is certainly as versatile a countertenor as Andreas Scholl and David Daniels, though he is apparently a little less in the limelight. The cantatas presented here are well arranged so that there is considerable contrast in style and tempo from one piece to the next, assuring that the listener never feels a sense of monotony. Moreover, we have four disks of cantatas each by a different composer, and many of these works will be new to even the average Baroque aficionado. I myself was not even aware of Caldara (c. 1670-1736), ten years younger than Scarlatti, who though "one of the most prolific composers of his generation," gets less than eight minutes on Harmonia Mundi's 15-disk Les Lumieres du Baroque (on the CD called "The Golden Age of the Oratorio"). Bononcini (1670-1747) was an equally prolific writer of vocal music, a pioneer of Italian opera, and an associate--and later rival--of Handel (1685-1759) in London. It is a delight to be able to revel in and compare some of the many delightful cantatas produced more-or-less contemporaneously by these great composers, performed with an alternation of loving gentleness and sprightly vitality by Lesne and ISM with instrumental interludes and accompaniments that can stand with the best of Baroque period performances. Lovers of late 17th and early 18th century music will find these relaxing disks ideal not only for dedicated listening, but also for playing in the background while working, doing household chores, or driving. If you already have some of Lesne's recordings, you will want this set as well, and for those who do not, this set is likely to become the beginning of a Lesne collection you will cherish for years.

Cantatas on Set. Vol. 8 is Great........2005-12-20
At last, Koopman's re-release of the 3-Disc Set Complete Cantatas Vol. 8 is available on Amazon.com. But, where is the description of what's on it? I will provide that below.
Firstly, I must include this series of re-releases on Koopman's own label, Antoine Marchand (though more costly than when on Erato in the 90s), contains the very well interpreted music of Bach as well as valuable scholarly research of Bach's Cantatas by Professor Christoph Wolff, a leading Bach scholar. Stephen Keavy leads the trumpet section performing the tasking parts in BWV 77 and 90 on this set.
Cantatas on set:
BWV 77 Du sollst Gott, deinen Herren Lieben
BWV 81 Jesus schläft, was soll ich hoffen?
BWV 83 Erfreute Zeit im neuen Bunde
BWV 89 Was soll ich aus dir machen, Ephraim
BWV 90 Es reisset euch ein schrecklich Ende, ihr sündlichen verächter, hin
BWV 109 Ich glaube, lieber Herr, hilf meinem Unglauben!
BWV 167 Ihr Menschen, rühmet Gottes Liebe
Enjoy the Musik!

Caspar Kittel (1603-1639) was a German musician who trained in Italy and returned to work at the Dresden Court, deputizing for his colleague Heinrich Schütz when the latter spent a period in Denmark. His sole publication, the 1638 collection of arias and cantatas, apparently was conceived as exercises for the choirboys whose musical education he superintended. There is nothing scholastic about the selection heard here, however, and the pieces are sung by a group of skilled adult singers. Countertenor-turned-conductor René Jacobs directs them and the small accompanying instrumental group with flair, ensuring that these delightful pastoral settings come over to the best possible effect. Most of the texts are by the German poet Martin Opitz, their mood ranging from the amorous to the spiritual. In terms of style, they're not so far from contemporary works by Monteverdi or Schütz, and anyone seeking something vocal and unusual from the Baroque period would find them rewarding. --George Hall
Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-10-20
Casper Kittel was a pupil of Heinrich Schutz, and a representative of one of the most important traditions in 17th century German music. In 1638 he published his volume of 'Arias and Cantatas' of German-language secular songs in the style of Caccini and Peri. He was a singing teacher in Dresden, and actually wrote these as vocal exercises for choir boys. Martin Opitz, a well-known poet, wrote the text for most of these songs; his poems had previously been used by Shutz for some of his compositions. Besides love songs, Kittel also offers several moral songs. All 30 pieces can be considered 'arias' because of the structure of the texts and their compositional premise, which exceeds considerably that of a simple song. One of the interesting aspects of this disc is the varied combinations of voices; there are solos, duets, trios and quartets, all of which give us another perspective on Kittel's very clever and new way of mixing Italian and German musical elements. All the singing was excellent, but I must hone in on the two tenors who were so outstanding in their contributions, especially Gerd Turk. And let me say I am very happy that Rene Jacobs decided to conduct instead of sing. His countertenor voice does not rank with countertenors that are great such as Michael Chance and David Daniels. However, he certainly knows how to interpret the music at hand!!!!

Here are two of Rossini's "secular" cantatas: "The Lament of Harmony on the Death of Orpheus" for tenor, male chorus, and orchestra, written when he was a 16-year-old conservatory student, and the far more substantial "Wedding of Thetis and Peleus," one of many such pieces he composed for special occasions, commissioned for the marriage of an Italian princess to a French prince. Both consist of primarily short, separate, contrasting numbers, most of which would be perfectly at home in the opera house.
Indeed, Rossini himself evidently made no distinction between the genres, recycling and adapting arias freely from one to the other. No wonder much of the music here sounds familiar. It is also very beautiful. There are some echoes of Haydn and Mozart, but most is vintage Rossini, full of charm, grace, and beguilingly lovely, celestially floating melodies, as well as exciting sections of high drama. Only the end of the Wedding Cantata gets repetitious, as if Rossini had run out of ideas.
The orchestration is singularly felicitous, with wonderful woodwind passages and horn solos. The vocal parts are extremely difficult, demanding agile coloratura, melting lyricism, and dramatic weight. All are stratospheric, going up to many high B-flats and B's; the tenors have several C's and even a D. The singing ranges from excellent to spectacular; only the soprano is a little shrill at times. Tenors Florez as Peleus and Kelly as Harmony are outstanding, and Cecilia Bartoli, who gets stellar treatment with the only picture in the booklet, also gets every chance to display her strengths in all their glory: the intense, focused voice, pure throughout a huge range; the large palette of colors and timbres; the rippling, immaculately clear coloratura. The orchestra and chorus, led by Riccardo Chailly, are splendid. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2001-07-11
I never get bored of this CD, everytime I listen to it I just love it more and more everyday. All the songs are very relaxing. I think that everyone will enjoy it, it's just great.
Pure Pleasure.......2001-06-01
This recording of two of Rossini's many cantatas is an abolute delight. Everyone involved communicates the joy of making these early works come alive. Bartoli and Chailly are known qualities, and the former contributes some of the most spectacular vocal pyrotechnics I have ever heard; I don't remember any "superstar" who so fully lives up to his or her hype the way this singer does with every recording. Chailly is a Rossini specialist who works his usual magic with this unfamiliar material. The other four soloists deserve their equal billing with Bartoli, tenor Florez and soprano Scano doing outstanding work. Too bad space could not be found to include their photos along with the mezzo and maestro in the otherwise excellent accompanying booklet. This disc is a gem.
Virtuosic.......2001-05-24
This CD is a rare treat. It combines a light classic "Mozartian" style with a melodic Rossinian belcanto. The vocal performances are very good. Bartoli and the young tenor Juan Diego Florez as the headliners. Juan Diego Florez really stands out on this CD as a vocal force to look out for. He is very young, mid-twenties, but has an extremely beautiful and fluid voice. He exhibits practically no vocal strain. Bartoli's coloratura is stunning as usual. The range she possess is well demonstrated on this disc. Fans of classical music will not be dissapointed by this disc. It is well worth the cost.
