If Rieu is not the most outstanding purveyor of Viennese waltzes and similar light-hearted fare, he is certainly the most popular and well-known. There are plenty of fun pieces on this album, although, to be just a tad pedantic, more of it is Italian and French than remotely Viennese. The title of this CD was misleading. I wanted an entire CD of Viennese waltzes to play at a party, and was disappointed that there were marches, etc. on the CD. A better title would've been "The Vienna I Love, Music From My Heart".

I am really a rock music fan but I enjoy this version of light classical music. It may not be for the serious classical music enthusiast, but it is still considered excellent light entertainment. What a way to introduce classical music to a wider audience!
Pop Strauss, et al.......2004-04-30
I was looking for truly Viennese renditions of Strauss waltzes. Though unrelentingly upbeat, this isn't it. There are medleys of Strauss, Offenbach, Rossini, and everyone else imaginable. It's a pop version of what was once pop on its own. I know Strauss isn't serious classical fare, but this trivializes it.

Having one of those ho-hum days just like that little round guy on the Zoloft commercial? Place this on your CD, press start, and don't fight it! You will be dancing around the living room (provided you don't fight it, just let it go!). Musically, it is a very fine piece from a very fine artist. It can totally transport you. So many of the tunes you will know from TV commercials, (Rheingold Beer) etc. It is a solid beautiful collection of tunes that can stir the soul. I know it sounds schmaltzy, but if it can make you feel better,why not try it?

A super budget 5 CD collection of all of Grainger's Piano music.
Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.

Lawrence's great strength as a trombonist is the simple loveliness of his sound, which comes through beautifully on some of the older, simpler melodies.

Mark Lawrence really has something special here. His interpretations are supremely rewarding, yet beautifully restrained. The Albinoni and Mediatation on the alto trombone are just gorgeous - in my mind well ahead of Alessi recordings of classic string pieces like The Swan. And the Marcello is a formidable interpretation, up there with the best string players, although he doesn't really get the baroque sound sometimes. In general the tone isn't quite as wide and gorgeous as Alessi, but he's picked the repertoire well so this isn't a problem. All in all, an awesome disc, up there with my top three best and complementary recordings out there for trombone (Joe Alessi's NY Legends and Lindberg's Virtuoso Trombone are the others).

This is a terrific CD. Mark Lawrence demstrates complete mastery of the trombone. This CD covers just about every type of music for the trombone, from very melodic, to 20th Century, to Jazz. Buy this CD. You'll be glad you did.
Brilliant.......2000-06-19
This CD shows the capability of Mark Lawrence as compared to other popular trombonists, like Christian Lindberg and Joseph Alessi. Lawrence has the soloistic feel of Lindberg (which is my only complaint against Alessi), and can play convincingly in all the styles exhibited on this disc (which is one of Lindberg's problems). This is a must buy for all trombone enthusiasts!

The "Monster" Concert Live.......2000-03-28
Those of us who are Stebermaniacs know that the October,1958 Carnegie Hall concert preserved in this live recording captured Eleanor Steber at the height of her popularity and vocal artistry. In her autobiography, she admits that she planned the most spectacular program she could conceive, and she blows away the enthusiastic audience with her stamina, technique, versatility and emotion coupled with control and musicality. Every review of this concert I have ever read selects a different "high point;" the spectacular Strauss segment from "The Woman without a Shadow," "Qui la Voce" from I Puritani, the multiple aria encores, Barber's "Knoxville," the Berlioz song cycle: the sheer quantity of glorious singing makes this a collector's item. An additional bonus is a more subdued, but warm 1956 song recital containing selections never before available. The sonic values are excellent in the 1958 concert, a bit less so in the earlier concert. Nevertheless, these are treasures, especially in the light of the few Steber concert recordings in existence.

Pahud is a truly fabulous flutist, but his playing is so musical and expressive that his virtuosity never becomes an end in itself. His runs are like cascades, natural and effortless at any speed. He seems not to breathe at all, spinning endless phrases without losing pitch or quality. And his tone: clear, translucent, radiant but never shrill even in the highest register, warm and mellow down to a low B, its range of dynamics, color and nuance is breath-taking. It can rise to a passionate intensity not usually associated with the flute, but crucial to these three works, of which only one, the Suite by Widor, is "for flute," the others being transcriptions of violin sonatas. As principal flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic, Pahud fell in love with Strauss' brilliant, soaring orchestral flute parts and decided to "appropriate" the Violin Sonata. Written when Strauss was 23, it has a youthful fervor and exuberance, but clearly harbors the seeds of his mature mastery. Pahud's transcription is very good and should be a welcome addition to the flute's notoriously sparse romantic repertoire. The violin part lies high and does not need many changes of notes or register, and the filigree runs sound light and airy. The anonymous familiar arrangement of the Franck Sonata works less well, requiring much bending of lines and jumping among registers, often in jarringly inauspicious places. The first and last movements, with their serene, sunny sound, are best; the other two really cry out for the warm, dark richness of the violin's low strings. Surprisingly, the difference between an original and a transcribed flute part, clearly illustrated by the Widor Suite, shows especially in the accompanying figurations, which sound idiomatic in the former, awkward in the latter. The Suite is a virtuoso piece, but has considerable musical substance; in contrast to the violin sonatas, it is predominantly dark, dramatic and melancholy. Pianist Eric la Sage is superb, supportive and soloistic by turns, a truly equal partner. It is unfair to print his name on the booklet in small letters and not to include his photograph, while there are three of Pahud. --Edith Eisler
