Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20
Take a look at the running times:
Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes
What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.
C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.
Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.
This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.
Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31
I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.
JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10
This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.
Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13
This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!
John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28
I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

A Long Time Ago..........2007-01-12
I bought this CD to play at work for background music and it's great for that. The only thing missing is the usually obligatory 20th Century Fox theme before the main Star Wars theme. Other than that, the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus do a very fine job with Maestro Williams' music, indeed.
Spectacular!.......2007-01-12
I thought this cd was excellent! I bought it as a gift for my brother, who is a huge Star Wars fan, and he loved it. The music reminds me of the best parts of the movies. I think anyone who is a fan should get a copy.

My kids love the Star Wars movies so I bought this hoping we would have something new to listen to in the car. They love it and I love listening to something different. John Williams is genius.

The Star Wars cycle, George Lucas's stellar pop parable cum merchandising blitzkrieg, has long since made history as an unparalleled cinematic-cultural-marketing phenomena; somewhere Billy Jack should be in one envious, ass-kickin' mood. Phantom Menace, easily the most eagerly anticipated film of the '90s, returns to the saga's roots and allows Lucas to flesh out the history of some of the fable's core characters and conjure up a dazzling new cast of cohorts, antagonists, and alien realms for them to interact with and in. Thus, all composer John Williams had to do was essentially reinvent the world's most popular wheel. The film-scoring legend has admirably risen to that daunting challenge, delivering an inventive score whose dynamics should surprise and delight even the most ardent SW fanatic. The Main Title and a few oh-so-sparing bars of a familiar Jedi theme are all that remains from the original trilogy's lexicon, Williams having evolved the saga's musical language, stylistic reach, and orchestral palette with masterful subtlety. The composer's most ambitious surprise is the welcome addition of strong choral elements, which he uses in ways both majestic ("Duel of the Fates") and menacing ("Passage Through the Planet's Core"). And though the film revolves around a young boy (Anakin Skywalker, who will grow to be both corrupted and redeemed as Darth Vader), the only flirtation with cloying sentimentality comes with the innocently loping "Jar Jar's Introduction." In the tradition of the Cantina and Max Rebo's Band of the previous trilogy, Williams and Lucas close out this musical installment with "Augie's Municipal Band," a Carnivale-esque romp that segues grandly into the composer's swelling title music. Williams may be the master of a grand scoring tradition, but Phantom Menace is gratifying evidence that he seldom plays it safe--even when the Force is with him. --Jerry McCulley

One of the Best Star War Scores.......2007-04-07
In my opinion this one ranks 3rd after A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. It is truely a masterful work. It contains some of John Williams best compositions of his later life. A must for any music fan.
Good sound track.......2007-03-20
The music is good, but I prefer the music from other Star Wars films.
STAR WARS? - NOT without John Williams.......2007-01-18
Probably the greatest living contemporary American composer, John Williams brings life and emotion to all movie soundtracks. I believe George Lucas animates Williams' scores, instead of the other way around; otherwise, Star Wars would just be another science fiction series.
A good thing to have, but..........2007-01-09
If you are a Star Wars fan, you really do need to have this in your collection. If you're not, well, I'd buy this mainly for Duel of the Fates and Anakin's Theme. There are a few tracks that kind of drag, but you can skip them. Still, compared to the cookie-cutter compositions for the average movie (not Star Wars, mind you) this is of superlative quality. Compared to the other Star Wars music, the overall CD falls somewhat short of Star Wars greatness. But I like it. It's not one of my favorites, but it's not like it's a disappointment. I would recommend it.
The reason to see Episode I in the first place.......2006-12-30
"Duel of the Fates"! There are a few tedious tracks, such as "Passage Through the Planet Core", but these are easily skipped. "Anakin's Theme" was sadly not explored in later movies, as it is a wonderful foreshadowing of what Anakin is to become (see the end of the phrase, which is a callback to "The Imperial March"). "Jar Jar's Theme" is, well, appropriate. It is also the kind of theme that makes me hang my head in shame for playing an oboe. But where this score surpasses expectation is in the fight music. Much different from the original 'Star Wars' trilogy, Williams has found a formula for cohesive battle music. It makes sense, it builds, and it's damn exciting--my favourite is "The Flag Parade". The other highlight from the score apart from "Duel of the Fates", which I really needn't say any more about, is "The Droid Invasion", a theme that is repeated and developed in later movies (it becomes "The Arena", in 'Episode II').

JOHN WILLIAM'S LEGENDARY STAR WARS SOUNDTRACK ALBUM IS NOW RECORDED AND BROUGHT INTO THE DISCO SOUND CRAZE IN 1977. .......2007-05-06
I will be writing a review on the legendary album entitled "STAR WARS AND OTHER GALACTIC FUNK BY MECO" by one of Rock's most talented artists ever. I give you M-E-C-O! "STAR WARS AND OTHER GALACTIC FUNK" was originally released in 1977 on Vinyl/LP and Cassette on the Mercury Records label in association with PolyGram Records Inc. and Hip-O Records which is distributed by Universal Music & Video Distribution, Inc. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.
As we all well know, THE BEE GEES would forever change the Rock n' Roll world by revolutionizing the Disco craze of the 1970's with the Disco music soundtrack to the legendary 1977 movie "SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER." Also in 1977, "STAR WARS," the very first original movie would appear on the theater movie screen and forever change the entire movie industry in special effects and how movie soundtracks would forever play a part in the movie itself. However, the artist I'm about to review for you now had many other different ideas in mind as to how the 1977 "STAR WARS" soundtrack would be presented and brought into the 70's world and age of the Disco movement. Meco would go ito the recording studio and record perhaps, one of the greatest special effects Disco albums in Disco's entire history. As time went by, Meco would emerge and come out of the recording studio with the completely finished acetate and deliver the finished product to their record label and employer, Mercury Records. Mercury Records would release the finished product as the legendary "STAR WARS AND OTHER GALATIC FUNK" album in 1977. In my opinion, other than THE BEE GEES, the "STAR WARS AND OTHER GALACTIC FUNK" album would truly symbolize what the true spirit of Disco music was really about.
It is now time to let the music of MECO to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking. The "STAR WARS AND OTHER GALACTIC FUNK" album from 1977 begins with the near 16:00 and original long version of the most breathtaking and blistering orchestrated music and special effects combined, recorded and mixed in with the special blend Disco sound, "Star Wars," the soulful funkish "Other Galactic Funk," the 7" edit version "Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band" and the 12" Disco mix "Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band." May I also add that you have to listen to this album to believe it.
Overall, this is one hell of an album worth checking out and seeking further research and information into especially if you are a hardcore diehard MECO fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the Disco sound and music of MECO or what the whole Disco craze of the 1970's was all about, I would highly suggest in purchasing the "SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER" soundtrack along with this album. However, there are many other MECO compilation albums that you might want to research further into before you make your decision as to which MECO album is right for your musical needs and tastes. Either way you choose, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own Disco music collection. You can do all of your researching and album purchases either on Amazon com or your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. If you ever get a chance, purchase this album. You'll be happy and satisfied that you did.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal Disco music collection. This album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great legendary album that no hardcore music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.
In closing, Mercury Records would release the MECO "STAR WARS AND OTHER GALACTIC FUNK" album to highly critically acclaim in 1977. MECO would continue on with recording other great Disco music soundtracks such as "SUPERMAN" and other "STAR WARS" soundtracks that were still yet to come. The importance and contribution that MECO will have made to Disco music as well as music in general, is the further advancement in special effects in the recording technology process. With this in mind, MECO will forever leave their place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you MECO. Thanks for the great memories with hopefully, many more still to come. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. MECO RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
Me go Meco.......2007-04-13
In solidarity with the others here I am thrilled to find this on cd at Aamazan after missing my 2 (count em 2) lps of this I went thru. And the marching band of Other Galactic Funk is still one of the great anomalies of disco.
Star funkadelic . . . and then some!.......2007-03-20
I must admit, I do agree with some reviewers who think it a "bit much". I once had the original album on disco vinyl, and remember playing it. Now that I am recollecting some light-hearted music of the past, I find that I am totally satisfied with the 7:35 DJ promo-only 12" version track provided on cd compilation "The Casablanca Records Story".
For those looking for alternative Star Wars disco, look no further than the Boris Midney Anthology, for a latin style "hoppin" beat.
By the way, you can see the Meco album cover quickly towards the end of "Thank God It's Friday" when DJ of Zoo Disco putting his albums away, humming "last dance."
AWESOME.......2006-11-10
This brought me back to the time when Star Wars came out. Man, what a time
It's a must have for any true SW fan.
Meco Madness.......2006-10-10
For nostalgia fans only!! This was a huge hit back in the 1970's and it's great fun today. I wore the original LP version out back in the day. Thanks to Hip-O, it's back!!

Best of Episodes IV - VI.......2007-05-16
It has been said before -- if you want the best all on one CD, then this is the best sampler to get.
Conducted by the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra, there shines through an obvious love of the material being played. These are among the best versions I've ever heard of these songs and the production quality is first rate.
My only slight niggle would be that at times, the horn section seem to come through a little too strong, but that might just be my tastes and my sound system. And it is not enough to keep me from giving it 5 stars. All the best from 3 of the best movie soundtracks in the past 30 years.
If you don't want to buy each score, get this compilation.......2006-09-29
This is a great representation of the excellent music Williams wrote for the original trilogy. Many of these tracks are completely fantastic. There are a couple of tracks that I wouldn't have added to this compilation in favor of adding others (the sand people track is pretty boring) and the cantina music ends with some really weird sounding synth effects or something, but the rest of the album is great. I'd give it 4 1/2 if I could.
Star Wars Music Sampler.......2003-07-12
The Star Wars Trilogy: John Williams Conducts John Williams is a 13-track "sampler" of selected orchestral arrangements from the 1977-83 "Classic" Episodes of George Lucas' space opera set "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away." Not to be confused with either the Varese Sarabande 1983 recording with a similar title, this 1990 Sony Classical offering showcases the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra under the direction of the composer.
While none of the material here is surprising - we HAVE heard all these themes before in the London Symphony Orchestra-performed original soundtracks in their various incarnations - the Skywalker Symphony (a group of talented musicians assembled especially for this performance) performs Williams' concert hall arrangements with clarity and love for the material. There was also an attempt to add more variety to the 13 tracks to further avoid confusion with the other "Star Wars Trilogy" single CD collection. The Cantina Band (that jazzy Benny Goodman style bauble from Star Wars) and the bouncy The Little People are here, as well as the more "traditional" Main Title, Princess Leia's Theme, Yoda's Theme, and the famous Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme). Particularly impressive is the concert hall arrangement of The Throne Room/Finale, which is very different from the film version.
While I prefer the individual film scores from either the Soundtrack Anthology or the Special Edition collections, for listeners on the go, younger music lovers, or newcomers to John Williams' music, The Star Wars Trilogy: John Williams Conducts John Williams is still worth a listen.
You just want more!.......2003-03-04
That's right. When it ends, you just want more, and more.
I gave it a 4 stars rating, only because of this. I have all the music from Star Wars, and definitely I think it's a crime to make a compilation from such a terrific soundtrack. You MUST have the entire score.
However, if you can only get this one (as it was my case around 10 years ago), it is an excellent example. For a limited space, I would have chosen the same themes.

The Second Best Star Wars Sountrack.......2007-04-07
Although the original is still the best this soundtrack is a very close second. I personally don't see how any classical music fan could pass up this CD.
Great Soundtrack! But I got a question . . . .......2005-12-30
This ISN't Joseph. I am his oldest DAUGHTER.
I don't have it yet. So, can someone tell me the exact name of "Luke's Theme?" I've been looking for it, but I never found it. Email me at WaterFaerie44@aol.com if you know it. Thank you.
The best film in the Star Wars trilogy is also the best soundtrack in the trilogy.......2005-09-11
I have been a Star Wars fan since the original Star Wars was released back in 1977 and was still called Star Wars and not Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. But I became a dedicated fan in 1980 when The Empire Strikes Back was released. Not only is it the best film of all six Star Wars films, but it also the best soundtrack in, dare I say it, film history. John Williams is a musical genius who can produce so many emotions with his music. And with The Empire Strikes Back he is able to express sadness, anger, loss, love, fear and tragedy with some great pieces of music. My favorite piece on this soundtrack is The Imperial March. The moment I heard that piece of music chills went down my spine. Every time I hear that piece of music I expect to see Darth Vader march down the hall. It is a strong piece of music along with the other tracks on this two CD set. This is a great addition to a CD collection along with the other Star Wars soundtracks. But if you had to buy only one, then The Empire Strikes Back is the Star Wars soundtrack to own.
A Tremendously better sequel and equally great soundtrack!.......2005-07-13
Empire is my favorite Star Wars film, I'll say that now. I think the deeply emotional stories behind each character are gripping and beautifully shown. The soundtrack meets every expectation and blows you away. Each track holds unique and beautiful themes. The love story is brought into music without a flaw, the romance spread clearly through the music.
Along with the original theme for the empire (which is on disc 2 as (#1) The Imperial March and in many other tracks) and the theme generally associated with Luke (which also accompanies Obi Wan in many tracks), we see the introduction of new characters and new themes.
Track 2 on Disc 2 is Yoda's theme, a sweeping and graceful piece which acurately portrays the aging and brilliant Jedi Master through John Williams's genius. In many instances, we also see Luke's theme underwritten into this music as he learns new skills.
My favorite by far is the addition of the love theme for Han and Leia, which is written in various forms into most of the tracks (Premiring fully in Track 9 Han Solo and the Princess onm disc 1). It is a sweeping, emotional theme that touches anyone very deeply. On disc 1, track 5 The Battle of Hoth shows this them clearly near the end, as well as most of the scenes on Bespin on disc one.
We also see a collection of most of the old themes and most new ones when the characters reach Bespin, the love theme, Luke's theme, and one to fit the city itself.
The culmination of these make for a sweeping, enchanting finale where Lando and Chewie leave Luke and Leia behind.
Some of the best tracks include:
Disc 1 - Track 5 - The Battle of Hoth
Disc 1 - Track 6 - The Asteroid Field
Disc 1 - Track 9 - Han Solo and the Princess
Essentially all of Disc 2
Any fan of John Williams or Star Wars should absolutely love this soundtrack!
"John Williams Strike's Back".......2005-06-20
This is definatly a must have for any Star Wars fan. It is a great two disc set that has all the songs from Empire Strikes Back! Warning: This soundtrack is very dark and creepy. My favorite tracks are 1. Darth Vader's Theme, Yoda's Theme, Yoda and the Force, Clash of Lightsabers and "Training of a Jedi Knight/The Magic Tree". Also five stars for the production of this CD. I'm so glad John Williams went back and remixed all the songs. It brings more quallity to this fantastic 2 CD set!
Thank You John Williams for yet another fantastic effort

Customer Reviews:
Dull Epics.......2006-09-27
EPICS is plagued by the muddled sound of TELARC's recordings. I noticed this trend beginning with TELARC's Hollywood's Greatest Hits, Vol. 2. The recoding seems flat. Also, this recording is a bit bombastic and just not representative of the original scores. The Suite from Gladiator is a good case in point. It glosses right over the basic themes presented in the film with an annoying nonce lance.
Very Disappointing .......2006-09-27
EPICS is very disappointing. It is nowhere up to the usual standards of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. The recordings are harsh and just too showy. There is no heart, only might and if these are supposed to be epics, what is MINORITY REPORT doing there?
Chilling versions of the best scores ever written.......2004-04-24
This cd is an essential for any person that particularly enjoys the score in films. Epics is a full length cd containing 14 songs performed by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under Erich Kunzel.
Usually, I am weary of cds that come out with songs from movies that aren't the original recordings, but I have to say there should be no worries with this cd. The songs remain exactly the same in tempo and sound as you hear them in the movies.
The choices for this cd was amazing. Every song that you hear are the songs that make the movie it is in, most often giving you chills and goosebumps as the music encompasses you into the movie (like what happened to me when I saw Lord of the Rings). From the Theme from 2001: a Space Oddysey to Star Wars: Attack of the Clones to Lord of the Rings, these songs are performed beautifully with a clear and crisp sound.
I am hoping for an Epics II to be released someday, but in the meantime, check this out, you will NOT be dissappointed!

There is no soundtrack composer working today more talented or consistent than John Williams, and the Star Wars trilogy represents some of his finest work. Though he uses few major themes (mostly tied to specific characters, signaling when they appear on the screen or do something important), there's also enough variety in the incidental music to keep things interesting. From the instantly recognizable opening music to the medley that accompanies the closing credits, this is excellent work that perfectly captures the innocence and sense of adventure of the film. At the same time, the Star Wars score stands up very well as a piece of music on its own. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!!.......2007-01-09
I have three words: BUY THIS ANTHOLOGY. It is John Williams at his greatest in my opinion. It is Star Wars at its greatest. The "Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme)" is so awesome. Actually, ALL of it is awesome. "The Throne Room" is among my favorites of the tracks. Really, this anthology encompasses the epic of Star Wars.
Great soundtrack!.......2006-12-30
This is a great recording of John William's soundtrack for Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The LSO plays very well. The music is very good, and has many memorable themes throughout the soundtrack. This is one of my favorite soundtracks! You should listen to it if you haven't.
An Incredible Compilation!.......2006-07-20
I recieved this set for my Birthday a few years ago, and this, (along with my other Star Wars and John Williams CD's) remains at the front of my CD collection. It's mixtures and arrangements of the score are truly the best, (helmed by John Williams himself) and the London Symphony plays wonderfully.
When all is said and done, these are perfection.
A mixed bag from an audiophile perspective..........2005-11-12
Audiophiles, take note -- portions of this anthology sound like they were hastily transferred to digital from a second or third generation copy of the master tapes. There is audible tape dropout in certain parts, as well as some hiss. Now hiss, in and of itself is not a big deal -- I actually prefer that it be left in, for the most part. But the dropouts are unforgivable. I've also heard an occasional crackling distortion, either from the original tapes or digital clipping. This recording was made in 1977, not 1957... why should there be these problems? This stuff is all too audible through a pair of Beyerdynamic DT-880 headphones.
Anyway, I haven't heard other remastered editions, but I recommend avoiding this one for the most part. Certain songs sound excellent, but many are marred by master tape issues to the point where they become difficult to listen to through good headphones, breaking the mood of the piece.
The Best Soundtrack Ever.......2005-06-19
John Williams is probably the best composer that Hollywood has ever known. Williams has composed music for some of the biggest movies ever made, such as Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, and the Star Wars Saga.
If anyone ever tells me they haven't seen a Star Wars movie, or didn't like a Star Wars movie, I'd call them a sinner. The Star Wars movies (especially the Originals - Episodes IV, V, and VI) combine the best elements in a movie: compelling characters, a gripping plot, an original story, and an amazing soundtrack.
The London Symphony Orchestra and John Williams have combined to create a wondrous work of art. The technique John Williams uses to create themes for each of the main characters really brings the movie alive and makes the actors seem more believable. The variety of music makes the soundtrack interesting.
Here are the highlights of the key themes in the original movies:
The Main Theme (a.k.a. Luke's Theme) - This is the blazing fanfare that almost everyone knows and loves. When I listen to this song, I sometimes feel as if I can do anything because this theme is inspiring.
The Imperial March (a.k.a. Darth Vader's Theme) - The triplet figures in this theme, along with a very dark, full-bodied sound create the mood of the invincible Empire. This song is a trombonist's dream because of the low brass melody.
Yoda's Theme - This theme is a very tender and flowing. Like Yoda, his theme reflects his inner strength and his wisdom. I like this song because it is very soothing and peaceful.
Han and Leia's Love Theme- The free style (rubato) of this theme where the time is not exactly concrete, along with a very moving melody creates the feeling of being wildly and madly in love.
The Force Theme (a.k.a. Ben's Theme) - This theme is very similar to the Main Theme except that the theme doesn't feel as "impulsive" in my opinion. While the Main Theme sounds like it is trying to achieve something, the Force Theme seems to sound more like it is already victorious.
My personal favorite songs or moments in the soundtrack:
All the standard themes are genius.
The statement of the Force Theme as Luke gazes at the two setting suns is very moving (sounds like a baritone).
The Throne Room is an excellent version of the Force Theme for the end of the Episode IV. Also, the end of the credits is an amazing fanfare by the brass section.
The Battle in the Snow on Hoth contains very good elements from all the different instruments in the band, including a great introduction by the percussion and two Grand pianos.
The frantic Asteroid Field song displays some excellent work in the string section.
The Finale in Episode V contains most of the major themes throughout the movie and ends with a spectacular ending by the tympanis (This is how tympanis are MENT to be played!).
The Cantina Band songs and Lapti Nek also bring different genres to the soundtrack by adding some jazz and techno flavourings to the songs.
Enjoy this soundtrack! I know I did!

Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13
This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.
Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28
Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.
"essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16
When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!
