Grainger & Bolcom: Music for Two Pianos
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The Contiguglia twins made some wonderful LPs for Connoisseur Society. They met Percy Grainger when they were 12, and they play his music with obvious dedication and their typically rich tonal qualities. I like Lincolnshire Posy better in its original version for band, but Grainger made this arrangement and he knew what he was doing. The Bolcom pieces are even more fun, a Latin-American suite and two large-scale ragtime pieces. Bolcom should win a Pulitzer Prize for his ragtime (he did win one for a symphony), and again the performances are excellent. This is a highly enjoyable, well-recorded disc. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:
Marvellous!.......2005-11-26
I don't play violin, and I can't even read music, but as a classical music amateur I find this CD outstanding. Even an incompetent like myself can easily understand why Perlman is regarded as one of the greates violinists ever. This is a marvellous collection of pieces. The rendition of "Chanson Russe" by itself is, in my opinion, worth more than the price of the CD. If you listen to the audio samples on Amazon's pages and you like violin you will surely understand why I like this CD so much. I am grateful to People like Perlman, who make this world a better place to live in.
The best violinist ever!.......2001-01-26
All I can say to this CD is it's the best I've ever heard. In this CD, Itzhak Perlman truly demonstrates his best performances of the past years. I have always been a great admirer of Perlman, but since I own this CD, it's all I've listened to for the past three months. I myself play the violin and Perlman has become an inspiration to me, almost a musical idol. For any of those violinists out there, especially young musicians, who don't feel any excitement about playing the violin, listen to this CD and I promise you, you will strive to being able to play like this man does. He is truly the best musician I've ever known.

Album Description
"Everything about this release by violinist Rachel Barton Pine is exceptional." --ClassicsToday [10/10] (on Scottish Fantasies)
"Recordings don't get any better than this." -- ClassicsToday [10/10] (on Brahms & Joachim Violin Concertos)
Chicago native Rachel Barton Pine was a child prodigy who began performing in public at age seven. Today she is one of America's most acclaimed violinists, as well as the best selling artist on Cedille Records. Maud Powell (1867-1920) was the premier female American violinist of her era, and she made numerous classic recordings between 1904 and 1919 that are still sought after by collectors. This CD is a tribute from one eminent American violinist to another, honoring Maud Powell for the tremendous positive influence she had on later American artists. All of the selections are works recorded originally by Powell, now able to be heard in contemporary sound. Many of the selections are seldom or never recorded elsewhere, and all are extremely accessible.
Customer Reviews:
Great Tribute--Wonderfully Performed.......2007-07-13
This recording is just plain fun! Rachel Barton Pine is one of my favorite young violinists, and this may be my favorite of her albums! Not only is the music exceptionally well chosen, Mrs. Pine's performances are top-notch across the board. As usual, her technique is wonderful. And the musicality of the performances leaves nothing to be desired. Just listen to the sweetness of her playing in Amy Beach's Romance! I can listen to this one track over and over and not become bored. Then contrast the fiery virtuosity Pine exhibits in Bellstedt's Caprice on Dixie. Just wonderful! Let's just say this disc is going to remain in my CD player for a long time! Highly, highly recommended.

French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet has had a lifelong devotion to vocal repertoire, and it was inevitable that he would record an "opera without words" program. He is co-arranger of several selections on this disc, which is dedicated by Thibaudet to all the singers with whom he has performed. Listened to in one sitting, the disc is perhaps too much of a good thing. Savored a couple of tracks at a time, however, it offers considerable pleasure. Among today's big-name pianists, Thibaudet is one of those most frequently praised for "singing tone." He displays it exquisitely throughout this program, beginning with the initial track, a fantasy on two arias from Samson et Dalila. Among the other tracks, a few do disappointingly little to enhance what one would find in a piano-vocal score ("Vissi d'arte" is an obvious example). On the other hand, Thibaudet's full technical arsenal is magisterially deployed in "Soirée de Vienne," a concoction of Johann Strauss waltz themes including that of Die Fledermaus; a "sonata-fantasy" based on Madama Butterfly -- at 12 minutes, the longest track on the disc; and Louis Brassin's formidable arrangement of the "Ride of the Valkyries," which Thibaudet tosses off with staggering ease. -- Roger Pines
Album Description
Jean Yves Thibaudet brings a lifelong passion for opera to his new CD of irresistible operatic melodies: Aria - Opera Without Words, an album that combines the intimacy of the piano recital with the drama and romance of the opera house. Following the huge success of his recording of the complete solo piano music of Erik Satie, this new album is a very personal collection of timeless classics and new transcriptions - including several by Thibaudet himself. Aria - Opera Without Words includes arrangements of many of the best-loved arias of opera including Puccini's "Vissi d'arte" from Tosca and "O mio babbino caro" from Gianni Schicchi, and the sparkling "Jewel Song" from Gounod`s Faust. Thibaudet even provides a thrilling portrait of Wagner's mighty "Ride of the Valkyries." These performances are not just arrangements of popular classics, they are also piano works in their own right.
Customer Reviews:
Not Liszt.......2007-04-11
Jean-Yves Thibaudet's new recording is very pleasant to listen to. As expected, his playing is flawless and endlessly romantic in style; very poetic performances. His selection of repetoire is nice; however, the transcriptions themselves cannot compare to those by Liszt, in which Thibaudt dazzled listeners with his earlier recorded disc.
Overall, the playing is superb, the music is both warmly familiar and interesting and this is an excellent edition to the music lover's collection.
Opera lover.......2007-03-27
I enjoy listening to this CD mainly because I try to play these on the piano and this nonorchestral version emphasizes the melody better. The arrangements approach lounge music, but overall very nicely done. Not really for the avid opera lover, although I am--just have a different purpose for buying this.
Where's the Candelabra?.......2007-03-10
Strictly speaking, this is a recording for people who miss Liberace. It reduces opera classics to Andrew Lloyd Webber-esque Sunday brunch background musak. Dreadful.
music to relax .......2007-03-09
So easy to listen to. He plays so smoothly. Such a joy to hear.
Thibaudet Does It Again!.......2007-02-21
Sensitive and beautifully expressive playing, Thibaudet captures the essence of the singers art with his piano. Recording quality excellent.
Can't stop listening to this superb recording. Buy it now!

I must disclose; I'm an Alchemy fan and have been one for about 15 years. However, this fact does not keep me from hearing the truth and the truth on this one is... This one is a must have!!! Do you remember Red Dust and Spanish Lace? Yeah, it's that good and more. The Crossing is destined to become a classic. So Kylie will get you moving and She Speaks American/English is just plain good music. Enjoy a great cd.
Cheers
Great Music.......2007-03-10
I love this group! Great Jaz sound you can listen to all day long!
Outstanding music........2007-01-10
Same as "The Very Best of Acoustic Alchemy" I consider very relaxing music while I am driving going home no matter traffic jam and of course listening the CD at home with my family.
It's worth a listen.......2007-01-06
I have been a fan for 12 years and still love their sound. Since the death of Nick Webb Acoustic Alchemy has continued in his memory and honors his influence while moving forward and trying to incorporate other styles. Radio Contact and American English continue on with quality music. This is worth adding to your collection.
Elevator music.......2006-04-21
A pale, half-hearted set. Reminiscient of Positive Thinking from 1998, but without the energy. I can't fault the technical musicianship of the band: they're all super-accomplished. But this album left me cold. Blah.

E.M. Forster Trilogy.......2005-07-14
What a great soundtrack collection! My favorite is Maurice followed closely by the Howards End disc. I'm a big fan of the E.M. Forster worx and found the music to all of the films to be an integral part of the atmosphere, standing up amazingly well on their own, while evoking the most memorable images of each. If you love romantic, sweeping, bittersweet music, you'll love this collection.
award-winning Merchant Ivory soundtrack.......2004-05-02
This box set is great, especially the music for "A Room with a View." This is exquisite, elegant melody-making, combined with a great sense of atmosphere as well. This music really made the scenes in the films come to life! Now when I hear these tracks, I'm transported back to scenes in the film, like Lucy exploring Florence, or standing at th embankment of the Arno river with George, Lucy and Sistel at the "Sacred Lake" where they shared a very awkward kiss in the film (hahaha), etc etc.
Very enjoyable.
David Rehak
author of "Love and Madness"
very deep and moving music.......2002-12-30
Which one is the best..........2002-06-28
Strangely enough, I liked Howards End CD the best (I seem to be in minority), especially tracks #4,5,11,12 - I loved the pieces where Leonard takes his all day and night walk... Maurice - I really only was extatic about the chore piece (i think #5), and Room - the opera piece Puccini - I loved it the most. Still Howards End I find the most powerful and moving...
Robbin's great !.......2001-01-06
Dalianny is right, this is simply a superb collection of the works of a great original scores composer... Worth bying for the powerful score to "Room with a view", there is nothing bad to say about the other two, with a special mention to Maurice, one of the best adaptations of all times...

Elaine Stritch is a legend and she knows it. And so she came up with a whole one-woman show about the best topic she could think of: her life in the theater. And what a trip it's been. From Ethel Merman to Noel Coward, Stritch has worked with some of the greatest names to grace the American stage, and she has anecdotes about all of them (most are included on this recording). In this show, she hits all the marks with the acuity of a seasoned pro who's seen it all and whose love for the theater remains undiluted. Stritch is not a traditionally pretty singer (those gravelly pipes!), but she absolutely knows how to give life to a song, extracting the last drop of meaning, dropping pauses for effect with deadly accuracy. Sondheim's "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Broadway Baby" will be hers forever, and a case could be made for the hilarious "Zip" (from Pal Joey) and the obscure, spectacularly politically incorrect "Civilization" (from the revue Angel in the Wings) as well. Fittingly, this two-CD set includes "I'm Still Here," which may well be Stritch's motto. If you're looking for a concise yet bewitching history of the musical, this is it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
A National Treasure.......2007-07-05
This double CD is stuffed full of great songs and amazing stories. My favorite stories are of Elaine's date with Marlon Brando, what she thought some lyric are/meant, and her time in Compant. The total honesty that she brings it all together is touching and inspiring.
Very few people have the length or variety of a career that Elaine Stritch has had. I am sure that she has enough stories to do ten more shows.
If you love Broadway then you must buy this CD.
Stritch is superb.......2007-06-27
The only disappointment is that I missed the show live. This is a terrific honest performance by an actor who has a deep well of experience from which to draw. From her early childhood memories, through acting school, her loves, her struggles and more, Ms Stritch weaves a fascinating and completely enthralling story. Ultimately, she lives the songs, rather than just performs and this is what really marks her out.
I am so glad, she's still here!
Entertaining but grating on the ears.......2007-05-11
I've never been able to understand what is so great about Elaine Stritch's singing. It's simple: she can't sing. I've tried and tried to like her, and I do, as an actress, but NOT as a singer. Listening to these CDs, all I hear is a grouchy old lady voice with no vibrato, no range, and no ability to hold notes. If she were to try out for American Idol she would get cringes! I love her humor and honesty, and that's why I bought this, but the voice...ugh.
Great Broadway Review.......2007-04-11
I thoroughly enjoy this collection of stories from her experiences from a teenage girl in Michigan through her career, very funny, some sad and great entertainment.
Elaine Stritch at Liberty.......2007-01-19
Completely entertaining---a bit maudilin in places, but a must have for any Elaine Stritch fan.
Certainly worth the money!

Product Description
Through our years of touring and performing, one of our biggest challenges has been concert programming-finding, rehearsing & presenting works that we and our audiences will find stimulating, enjoyable and entertaining. While we are always on the lookout for larger, substantial works, we inevitably come across smaller pieces that capture our imagination, little gems we feel deserve exposure. We have included these pieces in our performances to give our listeners a respite, a breather from the more challenging works inherent in the wind repertoire. This CD is a collection of some our most-played, most-requested, most-enjoyed shorter works. It is our hope that you will enjoy these pieces as much as we have over the years.
Customer Reviews:
Really Glad I bought this CD.......2006-03-11
I'm just getting into classical music at the tender age of 41 so I'm far from an expert here. Like another reviewer I heard about this CD (which had been nominated for a grammy) on NPR. It sounded interesting so I decided to buy it. And I'm really glad I did! The music is lively & playful in some parts and gentle & soothing in others. It makes perfect background music when I'm working. And the music sounds simply wonderful coming out of my new iPod Hi-Fi!
Excellent!.......2006-02-22
I discovered this work while listening to NPR and could not wait to own it.
A wonderful CD, a MUST HAVE.....my ipod is smiling;-)

Not just monumental, but momentous.......2007-03-09
This display of virtuosity from "The President's Own," the U.S. Marine Band, now ranks right alongside the extensive discography of the Eastman Wind Ensemble with Frederick Fennell in my pantheon of wind ensemble/wind band/concert band recordings. Start with the Persichetti Symphony #6, where all discussions of transcendent 20th Century wind ensemble writing must start -- this actually surpasses Fennell in my estimation, because there is not a ragged bar in it (once or twice, the Eastman rushes a little as it transmits its enthusiasm for this great work). But then add in Stravinsky's Symphonies of Wind Instruments and the other great performances on this disk and you a stupendous, fulfilling piece of programming and consummate performance.
Spectacular Performances of Wind Band Classics.......2006-11-12
I'm not quite sure why this album is entitled 'Monumental Works for Winds.' Why 'monumental'? Be that as it may, most of the works included here are among the most popular and most often played by good (emphasis on the word 'good') wind bands. Of course, some of them are actually transcriptions. The works here originally written for wind band are Copland's 'Emblems', Persichetti's Symphony No. 6, Grainger's 'Children's March' and Stravinsky's 'Symphonies of Wind Instruments'. The other works are orchestral pieces that in their originals have a preponderance of wind/brass sonorities.
The first track, Verdi's 'Triumphal March' from Aida, was transcribed by that bandmaster of a bygone era, Giuseppe Creatore (now mostly remembered as 'the great Creatore', so-called by Professor Harold Hill in 'The Music Man.') It is indeed a monumental piece if only because one cannot hear it without thinking of an opera stage crowded with elephants, soldiers and Egyptian dancing girls. It is given a terrific performance by the United States Marine Band who let us know immediately that they are among the very best such ensembles in the world.
Stravinsky's great neoclassic 'Symphonies of Wind Instruments' is given in its original 1921 version. The playing here is extremely subtle, with conductor Michael J. Colburn fashioning a flexible, almost impressionistic rendition. One becomes aware of just how expert this band is. The clarinet section is one of the best I've ever heard with their ability to play softly and smoothly very much like a good violin section might.
Perschetti's mighty symphony for band, his No. 6, has been recorded many times and is surely one of the greatest works for wind band ever written by an American. The rhythmic snap of the Marine band must be heard to be appreciated, and again the clarinets are peerless in the Adagio movement. Weinberger's 'Polka and Fugue' from his opera Schwanda the Bagpiper is well-known from its initial full-orchestra recording by Felix Weingartner. The transcription by Glenn Cliffe Bainum is expert. The upper winds are given complex pianissimos to perform and acquit themselves admirably. The flute and piccolo pianissimos are breathtaking. The brass are stupendous in the final moments of the fugue.
I had never heard Copland's 'Emblems' before, although I'd read of it. It is an eleven minute work written in 1963 and is typical of his more knotty abstract style. However, his use of 'Amazing Grace' as a recurring theme gives it an unmistakably folkloric American cast. It's a brilliant piece given a brilliant performance.
The final two tracks, Grainger's 'Children's March' from Over the Hills and Far Away, and Walton's 'Crown Imperial March' are British to the core, arising as they do from the strong and deep current of British wind band music. The Grainger (actually written when Grainger was serving as a musician the US Army!) is given a winsome performance while the Walton, written for the coronation of King George VI (and transcribed for band by W.J. Duthoit) is suitably noble, and nobly played.
Make no mistake, this is a superb CD from beginning to end and stands among the best wind band recordings of recent times.

Album Description
A splendid program of Eric Coates favorites, filled out with a stirring parade of marches by all the great British composers! Sir Adrian Boult (1889-1983) was one of the greatest, most beloved, and longest-lived of all British conductors. He made countless acclaimed recordings, not only of British music but certainly specializing in it. He was personally acquainted with many of the composers whose music he led.
