This is an extremely varied collection, ranging from a series of klezmer melodies to the atonal weirdness of Varèse's Density 21.5 (which Eugenia Zukerman makes quite lyrical). Highlights along the way include familiar pieces by Debussy and Honegger, and an oddly amusing set by Bennett called Six Tunes for the Instruction of Singing-birds (something actually attempted during the Renaissance!) Katherine Hoover's heart-stoppingly beautiful Kokopeli is enough reason to buy the disc, as is her Reflections. Not all the performances are prime, but if the flute appeals to you, here is a unique collection of flute and nothing else. --Leslie Gerber

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!.......2002-02-10

I love this CD so much! I bought about 20 copies! I teach flute and have my students buy this CD. I want them to get this lovely sound in their ear.Her playing is with style and she has a love for life that really comes through in this recording.
    I can't praise this enough!!!

3 out of 5 stars Lack of rhythm, lack of interest.......2001-07-29

This was purchased as a reference tool and another idea for interpretation for Varese's Density 21.5. I was disappointed to hear her lack of regard towards rhythm and what is explicitly stated in the music. Varese's Density is to be strictly followed in tempo, articulation and especially rhythm. Zuckerman disregards some tempo changes and at times actually leaves out beats in a measure. Also, in Honegger's 'Danse de la Chevre' there are some questionable rhythms.

On the other hand, the selections from other composers are played beautifully and very musically. The klemzer pieces and the pieces of birds are very good and very accurate.

This cd will be used as background or mood music in the future. This would be an excellent cd if one was not interested in a well rounded performance.

I am a very picky lover of 20th century music. I was lucky enough to have heard a couple of minutes of Escher's work (and his name) on the radio, and decided to track down something of his. I am so happy that I did. The music is serious, yet delightful. It is surprising and satisfying without being imposing, which I find to be refreshing. I find it to be enjoyable if I am giving it my full attention, or if I am working at my desk. I am looking forward to hearing more of his work, and more of the Dutch composers. I would recommend it to anyone.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Recording.......2006-11-04

This CD sparkles from the first note with beautiful playing, energetic interpretation, a fine sense of tempo motion, and, best of all, production values that match the excellence of the performers. The quality never lets up. After numerous listenings, I still experience the inner thrill moments that come from hearing excellence in a performance. There is a clarity in this recording that is remarkable, clarity of production sound and ambiance, clarity of playing, and clarity of ensemble. It is a real joy to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars The Splendor of Italy -- and of The Whole Noyse.......2005-09-15

The Whole Noyse takes its name from the term used to describe a complete wind-band during the Renaissance period. And the Noyse these players make is beautiful indeed. Exceptionally well crafted performances informed by as much artistry as scholarship make this CD one of the most pleasant hour-long experiences anyone can have.
Fine performances of vocal music from the period (late Renaissance) are very easy to find, but the instrumental music, especially for winds, tends thus far to be very under-represented on recording, owing in great part to the difficulty of not just finding but playing instruments like the cornetto and the curtal. The 5 members of The Whole Noyse rise admirably to the challenge of playing these difficult instruments as well as the more common sackbuts (fore-runners of the modern trombone) and recorders.
Many of the selections on the CD are arrangements of vocal music, reflecting the Italian taste for playing, in particular, French songs on instruments. Many of the names on the disc will not be familiar to even the most hard core devotee of Early Music, but there are a few familiar faces, among them, Josquin, Isaac, and Gabrieli.
If you're looking for something new for your collection, or a gift for a friend who enjoys the music of this period, this is a rare treat and a truly unique recording.

          Album Description

The works of Paul Seiko Chihara (b. 1938) are informed by and continue the rich tradition of the association of music with theater, dance, and film; for at the center of his music lie the conflictual actions of drama, and even the purifying cathartic power of ritual. Indeed, not only his music for film and stage, but much of his purely instrumental music reflects his concern for narrative and/or protagonist situations. This tendency is made manifest by such formal devices as pitting a single voice against a sound mass of fused instrumental groups in such works as Wind Song (1971), or by contrasting and interpenetrating distinct instrumental choirs in an agonistic exchange of timbral colors, as in Forever Escher (1993-94).

Forever Escher (Double Quartet), an octet for saxophone quartet and traditional string quartet combined, is a tour de force of polyphonic writing and acoustical balance. Chihara allows each quartet its unique timbral identity (though from time to time they merge) while interchanging and metamorphosing much, but not all, of the melodic and harmonic material associated with each.

The music of Shinju (1973) is most notable for its integration of electronically processed authentic ancient Japanese song and instrumental music into the orchestral fabric. For his sound source, Chihara recorded performances by two Japanese master musicians and then transformed these ancient melodies and ensembles via the technique of tape manipulation known as musique concrète. The otherworldly atmosphere evoked by the musique concrète passages greatly enhances the shroud of doom that begins to spread from the first sounds of the orchestral prelude.

The idea for Wind Song came to Chihara while he was working on a re-composition of the Cello Concerto in A Minor by the German composer Robert Volkmann. While reconstructing the concerto, he began to collate impressions emanating from his interaction with Volkmann's material, eventually forming a concept for a cello concerto of his own. At first, he conceived of a concerto of "heroic" proportions, like those formally typical of nineteenth-century Romanticism. What he settled on, however, was a music that is at times both penetratingly understated and vitally lyrical. Like the natural phenomenon of wind itself, this music undulates precariously from the subtlety of a spectral whisper to seemingly inconsolable melancholic howls, touching all the gradations between the two extremes.

          5 out of 5 stars Lovely Music.......2000-12-08

I performed Desprez' 'Missa de Beata Virgine' with my choral group and found it so beautiful that I had to have a recording of it. I found this one, and another from A Sei Voci ...Although I do prefer the A Sei Voci recording (which is sung from a different edit that I find more beautiful), this one is also wonderful and deserves its five stars. The Missa, along with some pieces from Mouton, are sung with clarity, precision, and beauty, and Theatre of Voices is certainly a top-quality vocal ensemble. My only complaints with this recording are very minor, and probably only personal to me. I recommend this CD heartily as it is very well sung and is first-rate performance of one of the most beautiful and haunting pieces of Renaissance music. I would also urge you to consider purchasing the A Sei Voci recording.
