An excellent cd. definitly my favourite recording of the Vivaldi, an excellent Scarlatti, and the best "fall of the house of Usher" (beside Koshkin's own) i've yet heard.
However - I have to say I prefer Fernandez' interpretation of the Violin prelude; while nowhere near as clean as Williams' Fernandez' reccording seems to me to be a better interpretation of violin music, more "frenzied" if you like, and with a more exhilerating tempo.
Also there are better recordings of the Adagio. I'm a great fan of Williams but I think Rodrigo needs a less subtle approach. Williams is still very expressive though.
Beautifully played.......2005-04-14
I agree this album is wonderful, but does not hold a candle to the New York Philharmonic and Sharon Isbin..Rodrigo: Concierto de Aranjuez / Villa-Lobos: Guitar Concerto / Ponce: Concierto del sur. To compare go straight to Rodrigo's Adagio. Sharon's guitar playing and the Philharmonic are simply breathtaking and set that Adagio apart from any other verion ever.
A perfect CD from a master........2003-12-12
This CD is great; almost beyond words. Williams brings a lot of diverse song styles and artists into one cd, from Yuco to Rodigo--showing the great sensitivity and huge variety of sounds and textures that can be made from one instrument. This is the guitar the way its meant to be played!
(PS. . .if you're a guitar player like I am, check out his tremelo! It's PERFECT. It seriously makes me wanna cry.)

IMPECCABLE!.......2002-09-25
John Williams demonstrates his incredible technique, plus his strong control of the guitar in this CD. I also recommend the video, especially for those who have never had the pleasure of attending one of Williams' concerts. If you want to explore the "Segovia School", then Williams is your perfect choice, since he was one of Segovia's favorite students--and most successful. The repertoire chosen here is a "master class" in itself to aspiring guitarists of how to develop a program for a concert and/or CD. Great choice also for someone who just wants to listen to beautiful guitar music as they eat a gourmet dinner.

Just wonderful music.......2000-04-26
Addinsell was unknown to me until I heard the Warsaw Concerto on the radio. I was hooked. There are hints of Rachmaninov in the Concerto, and the lyricism is quite moving. I bought the cd for the Concerto, but I was absolutely stunned by the beauty of the rest of the music on this disc. All of it is melodic, sometimes wistful, sometimes melancholy, sometimes joyful. "Blithe Spirit" is wonderful, as is "The day will dawn" and "The Passionate Friends". The Royal Ballet Sinfonia play as if they truly love this music, and they are captured well by the ASV engineers. It is a delight from beginning to end.
British movie music at its best.......1999-04-17
I have been listening to classical and movie music for more years than I'll ever admit to, and I must say that Addinesll's music on this particular CD is all the usual adjectives and more...romantic, moving, at times even spiritual. It will probably appeal most to Anglophiles who also happen to love wonderful music. Grab a top notch gin, an easy chair, dream and enjoy.

Album Description
The magic of the Toys was that they managed to take classical melodies that tortured you as a young piano student and turn them into finger-poppin', girl-group masterpieces. Two big hits and a bunch of other toe-tappers nicely collected in one magnificent stab at the heart of Hanon! This Sundazed release includes the bonus tracks 'Baby Toys' and 'May My Heart Be Cast Into Stone'.

TOYS RULE!.......2007-01-17
I bought this CD mainly for the big hit "A Lover's Concerto" which I fell in love with when I heard it played at a friends Bridal Shower more than twenty years ago. I was also won over by a few of the other songs such as: ATTACK, BABY TOYS and MAY MY HEART BE CAST INTO STONE. Great 60's girl group!
Optimum girl group.......2006-04-18
The Toys are a girl group that made only one album, but what an album it is! All the songs are written by Linzer and Randell, and it's as though they prepped for the project by ingesting all the great music of the era. There are hints of Motown, classic girl group, guitar pop, Frankie Valli, and Ray Charles in the writing and arranging. The material is strong from get to go, and the groups vocals are exquisite, making this my favorite single-artist (i.e. not a compilation of different groups singles) girl-group album.
Body and Soul.......2006-03-05
We were watching "It's a Bikini World" (1966) on TV, truly one of the 1960s most inspired and subversive youth films. Stephanie Rothman directed a cheapo cast including Bobby Pickett, Tommy Kirk (in two roles, hip and square) and the one and only Deborah Walley, and in true BEACH PARTY fashion the film manages to incorporate many great pop acts of the day. This one has Eric Burdon singing "We've Got to Get Out of This Place," the Castaways with their catchy "Liar Liar" number, and many more, a few of which have cerainly not stood the test of time, yet such is the energy of "It's a Bikini World" that viewers forgive all sins. Anyhow the Toys appeared and my heart went right out the window. I had almost forgotten about them, but when they sang their second hit "Attack" in the film a whole era came back. The lead singer Barbara Harris is, to make a long story short, among the half dozen most distinctive voices of the century.
I can see why, or so it is said, the Supremes felt threatened when "A Lover's Concerto" hit the airwaves in the autumn of 1965, and had their songwriters attempt to imitate the successful Toys formula, which to my ears melds together the falsetto and horns sound of the Four Seasons with a gospel "realness." White America, I suppose, felt reassured at hearing that "A Lover's Concerto" took its melody from a Bach piece, as though to reiterate that in a time of seething social change and anger, black people were appreciating the dead white males and their "timeless" music. Anyhow the Supremes hit right back with "I Hear a Symphony" but if you ask me, it's not half as good as the song it seeked to ape. And when the Toys released "Attack" a few months later they launched one of the strangest and most incandescent pop records of all time.
"All's fair in love and war," sing the Toys, and the real message seems to be, "All's fair in pop." Barbara Harris tries to wrap herself around the lilting, twisty, difficult melody, but she's no perfectionist, for I imagine that to properly sing the octave climbing melody of "Attack" you would have to record it one note at a time, the way Dusty Springfield was said to record. Harris attacks the tune as though her life depended on it, and if her hold on some of the notes seems slippery, it's all the more beautiful because you feel something is at risk. Yes, she's straining, and in "It's a Bikini World" even her miming looks uncomfortable, but if you think Tina Turner sang "River Deep Mountain High" with conviction, you're talking pallid imitation of Barbara Harris in ATTACK! River Deep and Attack also share a similar lyrical mise-en-scene, the singer talking about a love that has lasted through childhood, a love that time has made stronger than time itself, a sinewy vine that simply cannot be severed or cleaved. The other Toys provide suitable support, they're lovely, but really the song belongs body and soul to the lead singer, and eternal star, Barbara Harris (not the white actress whom I also like).
How the Girls from the Carolinas became immortal........2000-01-27
You know you've heard it. It starts "How gentle is the rain that fa-alls softly on the me-hed-ows.." to the tune of Bach's Minuet in G...evvy schoolkid's basic piano lesson. Two of the three ladies were originally from North Carolina, the third was found in high school in Jamaica, NY...they got together and did the corner vocals and talent show thing til one day they gathered enuff snuff to strut inta the famous Brill Building, the assembly line factory for many a famous songwriters, producers, teenage acts, etc. Essentially it is where Goffin met King and they wrote tunes for the Sherelles, the Chiffons, et al--songwriters like Lieber/Stoller and producers like Phil Spector marketed teenaged angst on vinyl 45s....Anyway, they somehow got with Bob Crewe and "Working My Way Back To You" writers Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell and lickety split, they came up with "A Lovers Concerto", their biggest hit. But, they did a lot of other jams, too--one, "Can't Get Enough Of You Baby", wound up first on Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons' original "Working My Way Back To You" LP, and here in recent times it has been done by the neo-alternatives Smash Mouth. "Attack" and "May Your Heart Be Cast Unto Stone" were minor hits with that same bouncy pop production. They are aged well with time. Innocent but not insulting...And I remember "See How They Run" as a local favorite....this is a truly rare and classix album.

Customer Reviews:
Satisfactory, though not great........2007-04-07
The previous reviewer complains about Williams' lack of expressiveness, though acknowledging the artist's accurate playing. Well, I kind of feel that way about Williams in general. His skill highlights accuracy, in my opinion. Where I like Williams most is on the couple of CD's on which he and Julian Bream play together. Never-the-less, the cd under review has its merits and I enjoy some its pieces.
My song-by-song review of the master guitarist John Williams.......2005-07-08
1. Sevilla (Sevillanas)
--This popular guitar piece is usually played slow and without a strong direct rhythm, such as Williams plays here. While Segovia was responsible for taking the quite mediocre flamenco song and making it more expressive as a classical guitar piece, Williams improved on all those extra notes Segovia put in, by restoring the original dance rhythym (sevilla means dance).
2. Prelude to the Fourth Lute Suite.
--This piece is extremely complex, full of notes and usually satisfies the average listener because it doesn't repeat phrases as much as the other songs in this set. Beginning classical guitarists will hear this and immediately go get the sheet music or tablature for it to start learning it. They are doomed too. The piece is far too advanced. Williams' version here is popular because of how utterly note-for-note flawless it is, in spite of being so complex and difficult that Segovia even said it was impossible to play on guitar!
3. Andante
--I think Amazon.com has mistitled this piece. It is the exact same song as "Sonata in D minor" on the regular CD. But anyway, again, Williams plays flawlessly a difficult piece, but this one is more mellow than the Prelude.
4. I. Allegro Giusto
5. II. Largo
6. III. Allegro
--I personally thought these three movements sounded slightly "rushed", especially the slower second movement "Largo".
7. Sakura Variations
--Williams plays this traditional popular Japanese song several times, each being a different style of the same tune. Nice way to keep things interesting.
8. Usher Waltz, Op.29 (After Edgar Allan Poe)
--This song appears to be nothing but "smart noise", as I like to say. It requires technical feats of skill, but it seems to just spin it's wheels, and would do little more than draw comical smiles if played at a restaurant or club for an audience.
9. Asturias (Leyenda)
--This is a popular piece that just says "spanish pride" all over it. Those who never heard it before would swear this is a soundtrack to a film about wars in old Mexico. While this version is tight, Williams recorded this song back in the 80's on an album called "Spanish Guitar Music", and this earlier version I feel has more power and gusto, while the version on this Seville Concert Album doesn't quite have that earliers gustoin spite of it's own praiseworthy traits.
10. Sueno En La Floresta
--I am a true dedicated fan of John Williams, and I don't like seeing people say he doesn't play with soul, etc. However, while this advanced virtuosic tremelo piece composed by Barrios is technically perfect, it sounds "rushed"; and those small pauses and breaks that give a piece "soul" are all but absent here. He should have slowed it down just a bit. Did Williams ever play this piece with soul? Yes. In 1978, found on his album "John Williams plays barrios".
11. Adagio
--Otherwise titled "Concerto de Arajaunez", guitar + symphony piece composed by Joquin Rodrigo, and intended to highlight the guitar, by giving it most of the limelight. This is very different from the orchestra concertos in songs 4, 5 and 6 on this same album. Williams gives the guitar true color and expression in each of the solo spots.
12. Torre Bermeja
--Some songs just have a very thick authentic "Mexican" sound to them more so than others, and this would be such one. It was Segovia who popularized the notion that no classical guitarist should play one song the same way all the time. I personally feel that the earlier version Williams recorded back in 1958 when he was 17, despite the lessor quality clarity in the recording, is much more expressive. That was when Williams was fresh out of Segovia school.
13. Granada
--A soft and moving Spanish piece, the one you'd want to have playing when your girlfriend walks in the door to eat the gourmet dinner with you under soft lights. This is the stuff I listen to when everybody is out of the house and I can just sit back with nothing but this album and a six-pack of beer and just *V E G* for a precious 3 minutes. Or I'll put the CD player on repeat and turn it into an hour.
14. Cadiz
--A rather lively swashbuckling piece that didn't do a damn thing for me personally. I am a classical guitarist, and this one will never be in my repetoire.
15. Cordoba
--A very expressive piece with a slow beautiful yet haunting beginning, evoking images of the Mosk in Spain. The main body of the song requires some of the most impossible guitar fingering, and yet Williams brings it out without buzzing strings or squeaks. In the video "The Seville Concert", Williams introduces this piece by saying that Cordoba is his personal favorite.
--
Overall, while the extra songs on this special edition CD are interesting, they are not sufficient to justify the extra price, and IMO it is only Cordoba which justifies the increased price. The average person, whether amatuer guitarist or not should be satisfied with what amounts to a culmination of Williams' unbelievably accurate playing. This album however will not satisfy guitar enthusiasts who prioritize feeling and soul more than technical perfection. He simply just doesn't "take his time" often enough for that crowd of listeners.
If I had produced this album, I would have shelved "Cadiz", and put William's latest recording of "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" on it instead; the famous tremelo piece by Tarrega which is the "most" Spanish sounding piece in all the guitar literature in guitarist majority opinion. Cadiz is simply awful. I never thought any noise could be worse than "Usher Waltz". Boy was i wrong!
