    Great performances. The sound is very clear. My personal favorite is the partita for solo flute. Though much less well known than the solo cello, solo lute and solo violin works by Bach, this work shows much of the same qualities. Highly recommended

    This is an outstanding performance by flutist Susan Rothholz of Bach's Sonatas. The interpretation is unique, the performance is flawless. Highly recommended.

    I highly recommend this recording for a few reasons. #1 both Cooper and Rotholz are masters of their instruments, playing beautifully, with nuance and energy. #2, this is not your "standard" rendition of the Bach Flute Sonatas. The artists have taken a chance and performed these works with a fresh interpretation and it is not only interesting, but quite convincing and beautiful. #3, it is great to hear new interpretations. Many times artists will perform works with new ideas, but it is rare to hear them record that way because musicians are often afraid to venture far from the printed page! But in Bach's time, they would have ornamented freely!
    A fine album,, Susan Rotholz is a beautiful flutist and Kennth Cooper is one of the finest Keyboardists alive today. Don't miss this unique recording.

    3 out of 5 stars Almost, but not quite..........2004-03-30

    Susan Rotholz and Kenneth Cooper present a unique recording of Bach's flute sonatas, using a fortepiano for accompaniment. The fortepiano is the earliest form of piano, and Bach is believed to have at least played one if not actually owned one himself. The sound of this instrument is much more restrained than a modern piano, but is indeed a piano, being hammered as opposed to being plucked like a harpsichord.

    When Cooper gets a chance to play a few measures alone, the result is brilliant. The opening of the Sciliano in sonata BWV 1031, and the solo sections later in this movement, are bubbling over with energy. Unfortunately, the tone of the flute and the recording itself tend to drown out the fortepiano. The flute is too present and overpowers the fortepiano when they are playing together.

    The liner notes speak of "perhaps a new approach to historically informed music-making", but this is only halfway true. While the choice of the fortepiano is indeed interested - and certainly more justified than using a modern piano - the use of a modern flute gives this recording a sound that just doesn't work. With a wooden flute, the sound would have been so much cozier, so much warmer. But the cold sound of a metal flute with the rich fortepiano just doesn't work.

    This seems a bit better in the B minor sonata, BWV 1030, where the flute, at least in the opening movement, is more hesitant, more interested in playing with the fortepiano, not against it and over it. For that is the real problem with this disc - it does not sound like the two instruments are truly playing together. They seem at odds with each other, rather than being part of the same music. But the closing movement of the same sonata is where the music suddenly works - the rhythm is right, the energy present, and the two instruments finally sound like they are working together. Cooper's brilliant dynamics, coupled with some excellent phrasing by Rotholz, make this movement a joy. A pity the rest of the set does not have this energy.

    This is an interesting experiment, and I would love to hear Kenneth Cooper play some more Bach on this lovely instrument (there is no mention of its pedigree). While there are some excellent moments in this set, the overall impression is not very compelling.

    The Partita for Solo Flute, as played by Susan Rotholz, still resonates after so many hearings. It is played with subdued power and mastery and casts a haunting spell that reminds us why Bach, as no other composer, goes straight from the instrument to the soul... and stays there!

    4 out of 5 stars One Great Performance More Than Makes Up For One Bad One!.......2005-10-21

    This album contains all of the technically challenging sonatas for flute and viola accompanied by the harpsichord. Although I wasn't terribly thrilled by Kuijken's and Cervera's performances on the viola, the flute sonatas are truly a gem worthy of purchase.

    Larrieu and Puyana perform the flute sonatas impeccably. Although it does have some slight limitations, the almost 40-year old recording still sounds very clear and loud. I was extremely disappointed with the viola pieces and all of the musicians there seemed to be out of step from each other. There are actually not many good real viola players out there other than Jordi Savall but he presently has no performance of these works. A good interpretation I've found is on Harmonia Mundi with Paolo Pandolfo and Rinaldo Alessandrini performing: they are more proficient with the instrument and their performance is warm and melodious. They follow the meter well and apply the counterpoint very nicely. It is also a more recent 1995 recording with much better sound quality.

    Overall this album is definitely a keeper as the flute sonatas are magnificently played and I've heard very few played better than here. The viola sonatas are horribly deficient and there are better performances out there that can compensate for it. Despite the defects of the viola performances, I still think this album is worth every penny.

    I have the vinyl version of this album and have listened to it for years. I have heard other flutists renditions of some of these pieces and none of them come close to this. This is by far some of the best-played bach I have heard. I would like to own the CD. It would be nice to hear this minus the pops and skips that occur on the old vinyl.

    Maxene Larrieu is a grgeat flutist. I have playted these sonatas for many years and have heard recordings by over 20 different artists and this is by far my favorite.

    I don't have any other reference recordings to compare this double-disc bargain set to, but I find it to be an immensely pleasurable experience. All the instrumentalists play with clarity, color, and apparant effortlessness. Normally, I have difficulty listening to the harpsichord for over an hour (usually I find the instrument too "grating" for my tastes), but the combination of viola or flute in the pieces really augment the beauty of the keyboard. Again, I don't have a reference recording to compare this set to, but I believe that at such a moderate price, that this double-disc set is definitely worth a try.

    British flautist Lisa Beznosiuk is world-renoun, having played with the whose-who of period ensembles such as The Age of Enlightenment, English Concert and Acadamy of Ancient Music. On this recording, she plays a single-key transverse flute which is quite a feat to come off sounding smooth over such a range of music as Bach's flute sonatas. Ms. Benzosiuk makes it look like child's play here on her ebony Alain Weemaels flute (modeled after a Rottenburgh early 18th century instrument). She is accompanied by her cellist husband, Richard Tunnicliffe and Paul Nicholson on a 1705 Mitke harpsichord.

    Benzosiuk's talent for her unique instrument goes without saying and there is no disappointment on this 2-CD set with her playing or Bach's compositions. What is a disappointment is yet another overly-resonant Hyperion recording which causes to the music to be rather "lost in space." I'm sure the Hyperion engineers had a reason for this, but the net effect is to diminish the clarity and vividness of the sound. In fairness though, one's ears do adjust to the sound after a while if you can get by the initial disappointment. But, at least the balance of flute and continuo is ideal and better than in some other period flute recordings of this music (Janet See which the harpsichord gets lost). Another positive is some 7 pages of quality notes on the history of Bach's writing for flute and some nice cover art. Compositions - 4 stars; Performance - 5 stars; Sound quality - 3.5 stars.

      Yes it is expensive, yes it is a special order item, but sweet Lord is it more than worth the time and money. Stephen Preston, the British baroque flute master and choreographer combines with harpsichord legend Trevor Pinnock to create a Bach flute collection unrivaled in its musicality, virtuosity, and authenticity. Preston and Pinnock play together as if they were joined at the hip. The E-flat Major Sonata is more of a duet between the flute and the harpsichord, and the two play off each other as if they were just 2 appendages of the same body. The meticulous attention paid to technical accuracy while always maintaining a healthy musical line resulted in a CD that should help teach all musicians how to play this music. Bravo, Mr. Preston.
