5 out of 5 stars The CD I want to lend to everyone . . ........2004-04-27

. . . except that it's the CD I don't want to lend to anyone. As masterful and elegant as anything you'll ever hear, but also highly accessible (in fact I caught my 18-year-old definitely-not-a-baroque-fan brother whistling the first Zelenka aria -- rather spiritedly, too -- after just one incidental hearing). Tafelmusik's playing is a pleasure throughout, for its trademark freshness and immediacy -- I especially enjoy Vivaldi's "String Concerto in C Major" on this disk -- and the arias practically seem to be made for Matthew White. From the lively brilliance of Zelenka, to the gentle "Noli o cara te adorantis" from Vivaldi's "Juditha triumphans" (the words are actually kind of sinister, but could you really cut off the head of anyone who sang to you like this?), to the whole varied set from A. Scarlatti's "Cain" (for pure beauty, just listen to "Miei genitori, addio"), you can only increasingly admire White's unerring musical sense and command -- and of course that stunning, lovely voice.

5 out of 5 stars Great voice; interesting selections.......2007-01-29

The highlight on this album for me is the Handel duet. For people who like Baroque and/or Handel, I think you will like this piece. It is sung in Italian and has a wonderful Baroque/operatic mix. I also liked the Dello Joio piece "Jubilant Song" which is a modern choral chant with piano accompaniment. Samuel Barber wrote some beautiful vocal works and his pieces on this album should be in your music library.

Antonio Caldara was a mainstay at the Hapsburg court of Charles VI, and this large-scale oratorio (almost 80 minutes long) to a text by the renowned Metastasio was premiered at the royal chapel in 1730. It's a series of recitatives, arias, and intermittent choral interjections telling the story of the Passion and meditating on it. The overall mood is devotional, but the attractive music occasionally startles, as in the trombone accompaniment to the soprano aria "Dovunque il guardo." The attractive soloists wrap their voices around sonorous verbal felicities, and Fabio Biondi's fine early-music band plays with verve, making this a welcome exploration of a substantial work by an important contemporary of Vivaldi. --Dan Davis

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The best Caldara recording available........1999-07-11

It's worth noting that Metastasio's Passion text is not neither straight from a Gospel (as Schutz or Lassus) nor a dramatised narrative with reflective elements (as Bach, and the famous Brockes Passion text set by Telemann Handel and others), but rather a very personal dialogue between John, Peter, Mary Magadalene and Joseph of Arimathea.

Nice recording from Biondi. The Marchi recording of Jommelli's 1749 setting of the same text on the K617 label is equally good.

5 out of 5 stars Religious feelings and operatic beauty in one work........1999-06-17

Fabio Biondi has resurrected this wonderful work with his so peculiar sense of rhythm. Of course, the words may seem outdated and even irritate our sense of authenticity (through Bach's Passions in particular) but we should not forget that comments on Christ's sufferings were rather frequent then (description of nails going through His skin...). Here they are sung with such a sense of commitment that we forget their litterary ineffectiveness. The arias (contrary to recitatives which are bad paraphrases from the Bible) enable the artists to express their inner feelings: suffering in the first part, joy and hope in the second part. Just hearing Patricia Petitbon sing "Vorrei dirti", her voice mingled to instruments, full of regrets and pains, is a rare experience to be lived through.
