Customer Reviews:
I must disgaree.......2005-04-10
I must disagree here with the prior review. The music is great but McFadden's performance is stale. It seems like McFadden is sight reading his way through these pieces.
19th century guitar buffs know that Coste's music is far more flamboyant, amazing and beautiful than McFadden allows it to be here. It's such a shame that other music lovers couldn't know this too.
But what a daunting task to record everything here in one go. I don't think theres much point, and the quality of performance enforces this. Even Pavel Steidl's Coste collection is held back (for his high standards).
It's worth it, however, for the reference to the monstrous repertoire here. The playing is solid and technically flawless, and as with every NAXOS guitar title, brilliantly recorded and mixed. But where's the musicality, cheeky sense of humour and flamboyance of the interpretation? No where to be found.
You know, NAXOS should really stop these "complete works of" discs when it comes to 19th century music. It takes real maturity to do these well, something I'm sure mcfadden could do, but not all at once.
It is not just a bore etude!.......2005-01-02
You will know that there are great etudes in the world like Chopin's piano etudes which are over the scale as ordinary etudes, the expression included the songs, beautiful melodies and the chopin's message or history included the songs.. They is just etudes no more. Off course I have known that there are etudes equal to Chopin' etude in the classical guitar world such as Villalo Boss's 12 etudes. His etudes are great songs on the point of the variation or the technique on the playiing etc, needless to say.
On the other hands, I have thought this etudes, Coste's etudes of just ordinary etudes like Sor, Tarrega and Caruli and so on. One day, because not only I am a man loving guitar cd but also I play classical guitars, I bought this Coste's etudes score for improving my guitar technique. When I opened this score book and turned the page, I was very surprised, that is to say, I knew that the score was not just boring etudes at my glance, the beautiful melody lines as like I can feel the atmosphere of Romantic age that the songs were made like Chopin's etudes who had lived in the same age.
Because I met Coste's great world that I have never felt in the guitar etudes world, soon I bought this album. When I listened to the album, I was surprised more, too. The melodies of the etudes was very beautiful and calm. Because each songs have special characters as songs, even if I listen to the album from first to last without stopping, it is never bore and tired. The sweet and sentimental melodies are like just Romantic musics. I know that it is very difficult to play the songs in fact because I have the score and play by myself in fact. But the player on the disc plays with very easy style neverthless the songs are very high great level on the technique. Such playing will be not able to be done if he have not great ability as guitarists.
Anyway, I think that this disk have the value that we can satisfy fully. It is also great point that Naxos offer cd with great price. But Naxos can discover great but unknown players in major music scene, too. I think that by such factors Naxos can offer great and cheap cd.
Thank you for reading poor English

The review after I saw the review of up-reviewer
I am afraid that you objected to my opinion. Certainly, though I am a amateur classical guitarist, guitarist that I have studied by myself, don't go to guitar school or don't be taught from the teacher, the fore I may don't have the precise knowledge about classical guitar on the history or techniques.
But I dare to say, music, especially on etudes, there may be two type opinions generally, that is, there is the value of the player on the prominent techniques as the player play the etudes without including their muses passion for the composer, or the value like the player blow the wind of the new charms to the etudes by being reflected their music passion to the etudes, for instance, exciting talking on Chopin 12 piano etudes cd by Polini in Amazon Japan is breaking, I can understand that the cause will be the listeners have priorility which thinking, that is, as I wrote, the pure techniques, or the expression power with the player's interpretation. I can agree with the both opinions.
The more the works are solemn etudes like Chopin or Beethoven and so on, what the player put their interpretation to their songs may be with risks, that is, by doing them, may distort the music value that the songs have had. But on the other hand, there are good points by daring to do that. Once when Andres Segovia challenged to the arrangement of Bach's violin-Parutita Chaconne, some of violinists criticized him "profanity for Bach". But now the arrangement gets to be the greatest repertory for guitarists.
The players will must touch to the works with their most respects for the composer certainly, on such old age music of 19 century especially. But as my individual opinion, apart from Baroque or Classical music age, in Roman age, I think that the players can play with free-style comparatively.
And though there is many type opinions for music lovers, I think that we should not listen to music with the eyes of ears like critics, touch to music with more comfortable mind. In Japan, younger tend to think classical music of formal and bore sounds.
And certainly I can agree with your opinion that players should not release their cd easily on their young-age without the insights or techniques so that they can get the great mind for the makers of the songs, but when I recall about the philosophy of Naxos record company that the company was founded, the company said such "we want to publish cds so that many genres music fan can enjoy with low price, and want to find unfamous but great "young" player". In such mean, I think that it will be good way that we listen to Naxos cds while we imagine their evolving tehcniques for the future.
