3 out of 5 stars Interested oboe player.......2007-05-13

It is a fine collection of oboe pieces, and I really enjoy listening to them. The only complaint I have is that the case was broken when it got here (I'm not sure if it was before it was shipped or not).

5 out of 5 stars Oboe cd.......2007-01-11

This cd took a little while to be delivered (a few weeks) but it was in excellent condition. I bought it along with another oboe cd so it could be that one of them was out of stock and they waited for that so that both could be shipped at the same time (which was fine with me).

5 out of 5 stars What a great CD for a Great Price.......2007-01-09

I really love the music on this CD.
I just cant stop listening to this. If you enjoy classical music. You will like this CD and if you would like a introduction to classical music than this is the CD for you.
(If you find that you dont like it, you have not spent a lot of money on it).
Enjoy :-)

5 out of 5 stars Good for orchestra studies.......2005-07-24

The record presents the oboe very well. Price can't be beat too. Oboe music is always enjoyable (well, that's somewhat subjective, of course, but if you like oboe, you'll like this collection).

Just a small caution: this is a study aid sort of thing. I find listening to fragments of music -- frequently very familiar music -- somewhat distressful because of this coitus interruptus sorta feeling, kind of like when in the middle of Watermusik the Dying Swan piece suddenly heaves into sight.

In other words, this is a perfect CD for teaching kids the orchestra, but if you simply want some oboe music for pleasure, then I'd recommend to pick something else; for example "The Handel Collection" (a pretty old record), by The City of London Sinfonia (cond. John Rutter), 1990 American Gramaphone Records -- it is a collection too, but not excerpts, pieces are played fully, and the performance is sometimes better. It's just one example; I have it handy so I've mentioned it, that's all. I don't like listening to excerpts, that's what I'm trying to say. But I'm not saying this CD's bad, it's very good for orchestra studies.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-06-15

I really enjoyed this! It was really great for all oboe and classical music lovers! Very Very Nice!

4 out of 5 stars Impressive in places.......2006-11-09

I'm not a Brendel fan. His playing bores me as does his hard-core academic, intellectual, cerebral approach to music. When you're listening to a beautiful melody, do you honestly care whether the performer has researched the original manuscripts in the library of the University of Haden-Baden-Unter-Raden-Kladen? It seems to me that performers who constantly pontificate about the "correct" way to play a piece and the paramount importance of the written note are sort of missing the point and end up turning out lacklustre performances.

So it is in the case of some of the pieces on this CD. La Campanella is technically proficient but utterly uninspiring (compare John Ogdon's recording of it which is full of excitement). But then you do have to take your hat off to some of the performances for their technical brilliance. The Lucia di Lammermoor paraphrase is played magnificently from a technical point of view - great clarity, good tempo, the really difficult left and right hand arpeggios executed perfectly and actually perhaps that is the best way to play this piece. The more "emotional" performances of this piece take liberties with the tempo in order to hide technical weakness. So Brendel does this one justice. He also plays the Norma paraphrase excellently, although this is fundamentally a boring piece. Yes, technically you can't really fault him.

But I still find his playing boring overall. Many people would disagree with me though.

5 out of 5 stars The Italian tenor voice of rare beauty - Gigli in his prime........2001-03-27

There are at least three good reason for recommending this CD. Firstly, the years represented in this CD probably saw Gigli in his prime. Eager to communicate, and aware of the emotional content of each item, he has the Italian tenor voice of rare beauty. Unfortunately, these were also the Depression years, and even a best-selling artist like Gigli was invited into American recording studios on only three occasions in 1930 and never in 1931. Everything he recorded for Victor from 1929 to 1932 is here.

Secondly, the quality of the Mark Obert-Thorn restorations brings these items before us in best possible condition. To collect vintage Gigli recordings is to know that recent reissues have frequently been disappointing. The voice, in these recent reissues, is often both ill-focused and hard-edged. A comfortable listening experience is assured here.

Thirdly, this selection offers several previously unissued takes. Unpublished takes of the Bizet aria and the two Verdi trios are provided. In each case, a first take was unissued.

Combined with these recommendations is the fact that space has been found not only for 78 minutes of singing, and comprehensive notes, but also for a photo showing Gigli, Chaliapin and Tauber in close discussion, linking fingers and hands in front of a 78 metal master original.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing and wonderful.......2006-08-22

Up to now, Hyperion and Leslie Howard have created some milestones in Liszt recordings. Starting with the Liszt at the Opera series Vol. 1 and continuing to Vol. 4, neglected but outstanding Liszt pieces have made their way to the light. Howard continues his quest and gives us a fascinating repertoire with music that overwhelms with virtuosity, conjures heavenly images, and entices with catchy themes and strains of music. The composers and operas here which Liszt promoted with his ingenius transcriptions and fantasies are numerous and even unusual: The typical guys worthy of paraphrases, Bellini, Verdi, Donizetti, and Meyerbeer all make a return. But some others are featured here and prove to have exceptional music as augmented by Liszt: Raff, Auber, and even Mozart.

First up is the titanic Reminiscences des Puritains of Bellini. This epic work closes at roughly 20 minutes and is the first and only recording you'll find anywhere. The reason? Who knows. Ask all the pop pianists out there why they can't at least give these works a try. They are musically attractive and potent, and I don't see why they laid dormant until Howard's unearthing. The Reminiscences des Puritains, admittedly, is not one of Liszt's most striking fantasies. At times it breathes melodious music or storms through exciting Bellini tunes. In between, it drags a bit. Obviously it takes multiple hearings to really appreciate it.

The second piece is piano music from heaven. Liszt does a paraphrase on the "Salve Maria!" aria of Verdi's opera, "I Lombardi" and sweeps the aural sense with its angelic music, truly transcending piano sounds that resonate with a radiance and unique beauty I've not heard anywhere else. Following this is a thrilling transcription of Verdi's "Don Carlos" opera. The opening bars and underlying music is as jovial and uplifting as can be, with a pastorale quality of mellow music thrown in the mix. The surprise comes in the middle of the piece when the "marcia funebre" interrupts; such darkness and foreboding suddenly emits itself in the lower registers of the piano. It's truly a diabolical moment capped with an eerie march, gliding into a nocturne-like melody and then ending with a more positive recapitulation of the "festive chorus" music. It's a fine transcription.

Two Wagner transcriptions are included here, but one has already been issued on a previous Liszt at the Opera recording: the Pilgrim's Chorus from the Tannhauser. Those familiar with that won't really find any new music material. The last notable piece on this first CD is a Donizetti fantasy: Reminiscences de Lucrezia Borgia. Liszt divided this into two parts and so Howard plays them as separate pieces. The first one is the real winner with its operatic drama and intense virtuosity. After you listen to the music, accentuated by Liszt's transcribing abilities, you begin to understand how these opera composers were so popular. Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Meyerbeer: they all have great melodies and themes. Liszt knew this and so he had an infinite source of music to pull from.

The second CD features the best music of this two-disc set. The Reminiscences des Huguenots is a masterful composition; one of Liszt's best fantasies for sure. However, it's not given a great interpretation as I would like. Maybe it's my own preference since I've heard two other pianists play it. I prefer Arnaldo Cohen's fire and violent execution on the Volume 1 of Naxos' Complete Piano Music of Liszt. Regardless, the music is what matters, and it shimmers. A shockingly fine piece follows from a composer I never heard music from: Joachim Raff. Liszt's two transcriptions of his King Alfred opera seem to suit Liszt's romantic tendencies just fine. The Andante, for instance, is as evocative as a Liebestraume, even like his Harmonies du Soir of the Transcendental Etudes. The subsequent march is a little tame for Liszt, but still sparkles and hums its way through delightful music. Following this is a very interesting sidestep into Mozart. Why Liszt chose the "Song of the Two Armed Men" from the Magic Flute is beyond me. Nonetheless, it proves to be an exquisite piece. Its fugue-like tempo combined with somewhat darker sounds from Mozart is sure to please. It's a rarity and a rewarding short piece.

The Auber fantasie or "Tarantelle di bravura" is a blazing and rhythmic joy. Lisztians will love it. It has all the signature aspects of Liszt's virtuosic, extravagant and ultimately arresting piano music. The last two pieces on this second CD are also worth mentioning. The first being the "Introduction and Polonaise" to Bellini's I Puritani opera. Considered a warhorse for pianists of old, it proves to be invigorating and flashy like his Rigoletto paraphrase; it's somewhat satisfying but after overdosing on extensive paraphrases and transcriptions, you may find its 5 minutes just too short.

The last piece is one of the best on here but only because of the middle segment of music that repeats that lovely theme from both Norma and La Sonnambula. Thalberg composed a long fantasy on La Sonnambula, as well. He differed from Liszt because he treated this theme with thunder and overpowering chords; it was still impressive and effective. But Liszt turns the theme into a Chopin-like nocturne of such a sublime quality. Tragedy, pain, love, despair: these are the instant emotions I feel as Liszt soars softly through this slow middle music of unequalled grace. It's hard not to wish it would go on, but Liszt seems like he doesn't want us to lament for too long. So he jumps back into the frollicking main rhythm of music that introduced the piece, making sure we always remember that mournful and haunting interval.

Bottom line: I can't say it enough how fortunate we are, classical music fans, piano lovers, and Lisztians alike, that Howard has revealed these diamonds of music. Simply said, this recording is superb and powerful; the fantasies here the best of the form and possess exactly the kind of grandeur and excellence we can expect from Liszt. Passionately recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Good night at the opera, Liszt style.......2003-01-16

Some long, grand pieces, some shorter ones, some second thoughts, all making for another great set of operatic transcriptions by the great Franz Liszt.

Any anthology that explores the dawn of phonograph recordings promises to be rough going: I can't discern anything meaningful from the primitive recordings by the legendary conductor Arthur Nikisch. However, everything is more clear and vivid after the implementation of the microphone in 1926, and this material occupies four of these five CDs. Still, some artists sound a bit inhibited, and it's frustrating that we're often given only one movement from concertos played by pianist Elly Ney and cellist Enrico Mainardi. However, seasoned collectors will find recordings by Victor de Sabata, Paul Van Kempen, and others that they never even knew existed, plus a great, little-known 1943 performance of Schumann's Symphonic Etudes by Geza Anda. The set is crowned by an emphatic, rugged, deeply felt complete 1941 performance of the Mozart Requiem conducted by Bruno Kittl. The clarity of the remasterings is often amazing. --David Patrick Stearns

4 out of 5 stars Sorry...I heard only fifth disc in this set........2000-12-06

I'm very sorry because I bought only fifth disc in this set. So, I don't review all of CDs. Bruno Kittel(1870-1948) was founder and conductor of his chorus-Bruno-Kittel-Chor. It was one of very highest vocal groups in German-speaking countries. They achieved many contributions. In 1928, Bruno-Kittel-Chor recorded first complete SP of Beethoven's Missa solemnis(with Lotte Leonard, Elenor Schlosshauer-Reynolds, Eugen Transky, Wilhelm Guttman and the Berliner Philharmoniker) in Deutsche Grammophon. Its SPs were imported to Japan, sold over 17000 sets. Its restored CD set were issued by Japan Polygram in 1998(I seeked this set so far but I have not this set because it was issued only Japan.). And they sung many times Beethoven's 9th Symphony with Oskar Fried(1929), Wilhelm Furtwangler(1937 and 1942) and many other conductors. In Third Reich, Kittel was premiered some of 'political' works include Christoph Muller's Deutsches Heldenrequiem-offered to Hitler-and participated concerts held by Nazi. For that reason, Kittel was buried in post-war German musical scene and chorus were disorganized. In World War II, they recorded for Deutsche Grammophon-Bach's Matthaus-Passion(1942. except 18 numbers) and Mozart's Requiem(1941)-twice. It's a last recordings they sung. In this fifth CD contains complete Requiem and final chorus in Matthaus-Passion(St.Matthew Passion). When I heard this recording first, very surprised. Part of Introitus' soprano solo part and Offertorium's last refrain, verses related 'Jewish' were erased and replaced other Latin words(Sion->coelis, Jerusalem->hic in terra, Abrahae->Domini). It's a Nazi's sensorship obviously. What a cruel purges! But they performed very humanistic-added Romantic a little-this last work by Mozart. In solo parts, soloists-Tilla Briem, Gertrud Freimuth, Walther Ludwig and Fred Drissen-sung very moved with rich German accents. And choral parts-especially Dies irae and Lacrimosa, they performed with fear and tears probably. And they sung in Kyrie and Communio's difficult fugue part very superbly. Certainly, they are very highest chorus in German. I think it's a best of pre-war and wartime Requiem recording with Bruno Walter's live recording in 1937. But, final chorus in Matthaus-Passion is 'too' romantic performance. Bach's taste disappeared 'perfectly' in this recording. For that reason, this recording is not re-issue by CD present day. And this CD contains other two small choral works sung by Thomanenchor Leipzig-Brahms' In stiller Nacht conducted by Karl Straube(1930) and Anonymous Christkindleins Wiegenlied. Restoration quality is not bad. But scratch noise remained in part(very high in Introitus' opening and some other parts). I think Deutsche Grammophon's staff were restored like a original SP added frequency.
