4 out of 5 stars Mostly Magnificent Menuhin, with a Few Reservations.......2004-01-06

The recent trend toward classical box sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.

As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances for the label number in the hundreds. With so much music from which to choose, this 10-disc set aims "to highlight some of those alternative versions, including recordings that have not been easily available since the days of LP and others that have never previously appeared on CD." Therefore, the obvious mainstream, easily attainable recordings are omitted here -- for example, the Beethoven/Mendelssohn VCs with Furtwangler, the Elgar VC with the composer conducting, and the Bruch/Mendelssohn VCs with Susskind and Kurtz.

However, a lot of this material has been on disc before on titles which the serious collector most likely already owns. Most of the Bach is currently available as part of the Bach "Budget Box Series" title. The Bruch, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vivaldi VCs were all available in the now out-of-print 2CD EMI Seraphim series. The Elgar and the Walton are still available in the "British Composers" series. And perhaps most annoyingly, the previously unpublished Beethoven VC and Tchaikovsky "Serenade melancolique" (available as a single disc), and the Beethoven Romance No. 2 (available on an EMI Encore title) were both reissued just a few months back.

But let's focus on the positive, which are the other rare performances, the most significant being the never before reissued 1954 performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 with John Pritchard and the Philharmonia. Other elusive recordings include Viuextemps and Paganini VCs with Fistoulari, Lalo and Saint-Saens works with Goossens, and excellent Berg and Bartok accounts with Boulez. Though I'm delighted at their inclusion, of lesser importance is a 1965 Bartok VC No. 2 with Dorati -- his mono EMI with Furtwangler and an earlier account with Dorati on Mercury Living Presence are far superior. Also, neither the Sibelius (Boult, 1955) nor Nielsen (Woldike, 1952) Concertos are truly Menuhin's cups of tea.

My last complaint has to do with the packaging. I know I'm being rather trite but it seems that EMI has taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new box of Liszt Orchestral Works by Masur are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves, not to mention the amount of wasted packaging.

Overall though, despite the fact that "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" is not as essential a reissue as its counterparts in the "Original Masters" series, it is a delightful set that most collectors will thoroughly enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Eloquent expression! .......2006-01-21

In this formidable album you will realize Artur Grumiaux is in top form. His lyricism and expressiveness is quite evident since the first bar you listened. He possessed that admirable and inimitable phrasing, supported by the most fervent passion and commitment.

This is a fundamental and excellent selection of his interpretative art. His Lekeu and Debussy violin Sonata do not know about rivals, even the elapsed time. I miss the exclusion of his Häendel works Op. 1 and several violin Sonatas of Mozart (specially the K. 376), but this artistic document well deserves its immediate acquisition.

Grumiaux was -undeniably- the best Belgium violinist after Ysaye, and one of the eternal icons of this instrument.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Recordings Rescued From The Vaults.......2003-06-09

Now that Decca, Philips and Deutsche Grammophon, among others, are all part of Universal, we have seen some interesting things happen, and not all of them bad. What I'm referring to in this case is the new "Original Masters" Limited Edition Box Set series. Finally, the classical music world has taken a page out of the jazz reissue handbook -- put out a quality product featuring rare recordings but make its availability limited, and people will snatch it up. In the "Original Masters" series, first DG and now Decca/Philips have each reissued five box sets, of 4 to 7 CDs each, in distinguished, space-saving slim paper boxes, though the style of packaging is different. The DG sets feature 50s style graphics design on their covers, while the Decca/Philips ones have a distinctive rainbow/spectrum pattern on the spines and banners, and a black-and-white photo of the artist in question on the face of the box.

This particular set features the historical Philips recordings of the great violinist Arthur Grumiaux from 1953-62. As the track information is non-existent above, I will try to be of assistance. The first two discs contain the complete Mozart Violin Concertos, including K271i which is now regarded as doubtful (to be composed by Mozart), with Bernhard Paumgartner and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra (VSO) from 1953-55. It is wonderful to compare these performances to Grumiaux's stereo Mozart VC Cycle on Philips with Colin Davis (see my review). Disc three is all works for violin and piano (with pianist Istvan Hajdu) -- Debussy, Ravel and Faure (No. 1) Sonatas, Ravel's Piece en Forme de Habanera, Faure's Les Berceaux, Saraste's Zigeunerweisen, Fiocco's Allegro, Granados' Andaluza, and Albeniz's Tango (all from 1962). Disc four features shorter works for violin and orchestra -- Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole, Chausson's Poeme, Ravel's Tzigane, Saint-Saens' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, and Havanaise. All are with Jean Fournet conducting the Orchestre des Concerts Lamoureux (OCL) from 1954, except the Capriccioso which is 1956. Lastly, CD Five returns to concertos with the Mendelssohn (Rudolf Moralt/VSO, 1954) and Paganini No. 4 (Franco Gallini/OCL, 1954), and concludes with Paganini's I Palpiti and Le Streghe with pianist Riccardo Castagnone (1958). Despite the fact that the recordings on four of the five discs are in mono (CD3 is in stereo), the first rate performances more than compensate for any audio shortcomings. Well, I guess the consolidation of the music industry isn't so bad after all, as long as I can look forward to more reissues like this.

5 out of 5 stars Best collection of violin playing ever made.......2007-04-12

I am a professional violinist and have long been an admirer of Michael Rabin. His technic is beyond concern. I am familiar with people involved in these recordings. Amazingly, many were single, unedited takes. If you ever buy a violin recording, these are the ones to get.

5 out of 5 stars I really can't add anything to the other reviews..........2007-01-07

...this collection is an absolute necessity to anyone enjoys violin music and a near necessity to anyone who enjoys classical music...what astounds me is the quality of many of the recordings...more often than not violin recordings seem to produce a sound that leaves the impression that you're listening from the back row in a large hall...most of Rabin's recordings, on the other hand, give the impression either he's right in the room with you or else you're in the front row at the concert.

5 out of 5 stars An essential item for any classical collection.......2006-04-20

Rabin is spectacular!!! Just listen to his rendition of Zigeunerwiesen, he has no equal for this piece - not even close! I have been waiting for the re-release of this set for over 5 years, asking EMI if they would ever consider it. My thanks to EMI for listening. This is a re-release they wont regret. I have a collection of classical violin by many artists, but there is something very special about these recordings by Michael Rabin. His interpretations and the gusto of his playing take your breath away.

I cannot imagine any collection of classical music without this set of CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Rabin was INCREDIBLE.......2006-04-14

I have to second Scott68. Rabin was one incredible violinist. I agree, the Paganini Caprices (age 15!) Wieniawski and others were never topped by anyone! This set is guaranteed to drop your jaw.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fitting Tribute To The 20th Century's Greatest Violinist.......2006-04-01

If you don't have these CD's get them, you won't be disappointed, especially if you love the violin as I do. If you're a Rabin fan too then this small investment is money well spent. A better set of recordings of violin classics couldn't be found anywhere. Rabin quite simply was the greatest violinist of the 20th century, rivalling, and in some ways surpassing the venerable Heifetz. He was also known for his phenomenal virtuosity and 'voluptuos' tone somewhat reminiscent of Perlman.

This boxed set includes many of the virtuoso pieces that made him famous as well as more reflective pieces like Bach. Listen to these and judge for yourselves what a truly great violinist was Rabin.

Nice collection of violin pieces by Heifetz.
I wish they had used some filtering method while transfering Original Mono Recording into digital music in order to reduce/eliminate the background noise.

3 out of 5 stars Ruggiero Ricci seriously lacks musical depth..........2006-07-11

All of Ruggiero Ricci's recordings that I've heard have felt like they were seriously lacking of any kind of emotion, seeming more like a robot playing the pieces than a human displaying his feelings through a composers works. And with pieces on this CD such as the "Introduction and Rondo Cappricio" or the "Havanaise", they require much more feeling than he exibits. For example, he chooses overall very quick tempos, and then not taking any time when necessary to make an impactfull phrase, rushing through it as though it was insignificant. His vibrato seems very mechanical, extremely fast and harsh, adding to the robot like effect of his playing. On the plus for this CD however, is that it does supply the consumer with an abundance of recordings very difficult to find. Saint Saens first two violin concertos, and his second cello concerto for example. And Laszlo Varga does an excellent job interpretting the cello pieces, the primary reason i gave this CD 3 stars, where as if it were simply Ricci's playing it would have been a 2.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT COLLECTION FOR SAINT-SAENS COMPLETISTS.......2001-02-06

I've actually owned this disc before when it was first released on CD in the early '90's. Apparently VoxBox decided it needed a makeover--They've repackaged it in a slimmer 2-disc jewel case with a whole new cover art (Amazon has the original cover on the order page--If you order it, it has an outdoor-scene paniting replacing the violin close-up). This is a very reasonably-priced set that features all of Saint-Saens' concertos AND short pieces for violin/orchestra and cello/orchesrta, most of which are pieces that you only find as extras on CD's that feature a concerto that was too short, and for the most part, Saint-Saens' 1st 2 violin concertos are near-impossible to find at all. The CD is very beautifully sequenced with the short pieces interspersed with the concerti, allowing you to just surrender yourself to a full program of violin serenading. Decent renderings of the cello/orchestra works as well! VoxBox is a godsend for being able to put together these collections of otherwise hard-to-find classics, and more often than not they use decent-quality recordings. The quality on this one is subperb. For those of you who are Saint-Saens (or concerti) enthusiasts, and you haven't yet purchased Violin Con. #3, get this and you'll never have to worry about finding the other 2--You'll pretty much have everything.

          Album Description

"The recordings are uniformly clear and rich in detail--truly amazing for their vintage. At Vox's prices, a collection like this one by an estimable violinist like Rosand is well-nigh irresistible. Think of it this way: for almost nothing, you can get one of the best Lalos ever recorded and about an hour and a half of music absolutely free. A phenomenal bargain!" Aaron Rosand's CDs are always cheap - yet he's made some of the greatest recordings of standard literature, and often the ONLY recordings of non-standard literature. This disc is like a miniature treasure trove. It features the Saint Saens concerto #3 and the Lalo - and these two recordings are definitely among the aforementioned best out there. Rosand's sound is like that of a vintage bottle of wine. Although he never became a household name, his playing reveals a polished, refined quality that lends itself especially well to romantic works such as these.
His approach brings out all the sparkling Spanishness of the Lalo. The Saint Saens has many pleasing moments; to mention just one, the section of that closes the second movement is perfectly-paced and the harmonics are crystal clear. So many recordings and performances of this piece are played with an almost brusque "Tchaikovskyan" style; Rosand doesn't go overboard and articulates the lyrical sections especially well.
The Sibelius Humoresques are delightful; these six small pieces are never played on concert programs because they simply don't match up well against a concerto or a symphony. On a less positive note, Rosand's Chausson "Poeme" is probably the longest one I've ever heard, at over 17 minutes. The tempos drag considerably and although Rosand's big tone comes forth nicely, the opening cadenza and ending are just too slow. Like Grumiaux's recording of Ravel's "Tzigane", Rosand's is also very padded and lacking the necessary abandonment. He plays it very straightforwardly, hitting all the notes and never deviating far from the printed page. Berlioz's "Reverie & Caprice" and Saint Saens' "Havanaise" get good readings here. But the Lalo and Saint Saens concerto definitely make this 2-CD set well worth the investment. Four stars.

Aaron Rosand is one of the most overlooked fiddlers of our day. His Sibelius is fresh, with Rosand capturing a musical snapshot of the dark, cool Finnish landscape. The Lalo is stylish and impeccably executed. The remainder of the discs, while well played, does not quite reach the excellence of exalted interpretations by Heifetz in the Havanaise and Rondo Capriccioso, or Oistrakh in the Poeme. Occassionally there is some strain in Rosand's slender tone, some of which may be attributable to the sonic limitations of the recording. Climaxes in the Chausson and Berlioz and hindered by such technological limitations. But beneath such problems is exciting and vibrant playing well worth the unusually affordable price.
