We've listened to this Robert Shaw collection every season since it came out in the 60s. I heard part of it played on PBS this season, so it's in high demand. What Shaw did with these carols is incredible.

A CHRISTMAS FAVORITE.......2005-05-19

Personally, this is an all-time favorite Christmas collection with only a single reservation as to the recording. There are currently two versions available - the earlier one, performed by the NBC Symphony (circa 1963), and the later effort (1990) by The Atlanta Symphony, Robert Shaw's "home" orchestra for a number of years.

The Atlanta Symphony rendering would probably be considered by many to be the more "realistic." It depends, in the end, on personal taste. For me, however, the recording I "grew up with" is the original NBC recording.

On the RCA disc, both the orchestra and (smaller) chorus are more "up front" and immediate, more sharply focused, and the singers - probably hand selected by Shaw - seem crisp and alive, more involved. This, I would guess, has as much to do with the prevailing recording philosophy of the time as it does anything else.

The Atlanta performance, on the other hand, while certainly less suseptable to the manipulated balances of the 60's, seems, as a result, a bit "removed," closer to the more spacious effect of an actual concert hall environment, at least to me. But, again, my preference for the original is based strictly on personal taste. Yet, whichever experience you prefer, this is a marvelous collection featuring the stunning arrangements of Robert Russell Bennett. If you like medleys of contrast and brilliant embellishments, either recording is a must-have.

I purchased this CD in November 1985 at a mall in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. My wife and I were on our honeymoon (she's Canadian) heading to Halifax. So we stopped at this mall in Moncton and started browsing over CD's. Lo and behold I saw this CD of Robert Shaw and the ASO and Chorus. It was the remake of the old reliable 1963 RCA LP with Shaw and the Robert Shaw Chorale with the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra which I have played a million times not counting my home-made taped version. That still applies to this day. As far as the ASO CD version is concerned, it's a winner in some ways but the LP wins PERIOD! What's wrong with the CD? The orchestra. At the beginning of the first track in "Good Christian Men, Rejoice" as the opening bars start rolling out, everything seems right-on--that is, until the trumpet fanfares enter in several bars later. They seem somewhat "sour" or "flat" compared to the old LP version with the RCA SO. Telarc should have done a retake. However, as far as the rest of the music is concerned, the orchestra performed extremely well. The ASO Chorus is first-rate all the way through and so is the Robert Shaw Choral on the LP. But a chorale is no match for a 200-voice chorus!! The bottom line is this: The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra of 1983 is NO MATCH to the ASO of 2002--not by a long shot! I have kept up with this orchestra since the 60's and watched it progress with Shaw, Levi, and now with Spano and Runnicles. Shaw, however, was born with choral singing in his blood. No question, he was the best! That's the reason every time you heard the ASO chorus it was something of magical beauty because of Shaw. Today, every time you hear a first-rate sound/or performance by the ASO, it's mostly because of Levi. So, my plan is to purchase the CD version of the old RCA LP because of it's orchestral superiority and if the sound on the CD is anything like the sound on the LP, that's a plus too!! Oh yes, I forgot, the Telarc CD I purchased in Canada was made in West Germany while other Telarc discs bought at that time was made in Japan. I guess it matters where you buy it!!!

Review of Many Moods of Christmas.......2001-02-07

I bought Many Moods on LP when it was originally released at Christmas 63 and later got the CD version at Christmas 83. (I like the LP version better.) To me, all other recordings of all other Christmas music seriously pale in comparison to this one. I LOVE IT!!! "Many Moods" is an exact title for what's there. My favorite in the collection is the arrangement of "Adeste Fideles." At the end of that song, the orchestra has to "catch up with" the sopranos! Precision in attacks, releases, consonants, vowels, rhythms, . . . all are there in glorious abundance. When I want Christmas music and to be in the "Christmas Spirit," I listen to this for hours on end. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Shaw has given us the essence of Christmas and Easter in this recording. If you have enough money to buy only 1 Christmas recording FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, make it THIS ONE!!! You won't regret it.!!!

One of my faves--highly recommend!.......2000-12-18

We listened to this in my family when I was growing up. It's all medleys, so it moves through quite a few Christmas songs. It can be sublime and quiet--love the O Sanctissima--but it doesn't stay that way for long. It can be crashing and rousing, too--as in I Saw Three Ships. You could say it is a bipolar CD! But it's good! Lovely orchestration and large chorus singing. The instrumental segues, fantasies, and descants are unusual and charming. I have other more strictly classical, jazz, and pop Christmas CD's, and I would say that this is an interesting "classical-pops" medley-fantasia that is unlike anything else. It has a timeless appeal and should be an annual best-seller. This is great music to play while wrapping presents, baking, and decorating the tree--it tugs at your heart-strings. Another reviewer said it is grandiose, and it is, but it is also grand. (Play something mellower for background music at the dinner table, though.)

Zez Confrey (1895-1971) may not be a household name, but his 1921 masterpiece "Kitten on the Keys" certainly is. The Illinois-born composer studied the classics growing up, but somehow the temptation of Vaudeville sneaked its way into his compositions and he found success writing catchy ragtime miniatures with goofy names ("Wise Cracker Suite," "Dizzy Fingers," "Blue Tornado"). Republic of Georgia pianist Eteri Andjaparidze performs 24 of Confrey's works with technical perfection and plenty of spirit--two requirements for these compositions--but sounds a tad robotic on some numbers. Between "Kitten" and 1959's "Fourth Dimension," Confrey explored blues, rags, Latin rhythms, and--of course--jazz, but the real highlight here is a slow number, the four-movement Moods of a New Yorker. In sum, this a great tribute featuring great music, perfect for fans of George Gershwin, Ferde Grofé, Jelly Roll Morton, and Joseph Lamb. --Jason Verlinde

Oh, Kitten...it's a Must Have.......2004-12-29

Hats off to Naxos for releasing this absolutely perfect tribute to Zez Confrey - it was high time, someone had to do it, and Naxos has done Confrey real justice. One would expect caricature of his work, rather than the respectful, honest, accurate renditions of his work featured on this album.

I discovered my love for Confrey thanks to the Aeolian Hall Birth of Rhapsody in Blue album (another of my reviews covers that great one), which featured a small selection of his compositions. The distinct, unique sound of his work snagged me immediately, and so I was thrilled to come upon this little Naxos treat.

Every piece on the album is sheer delight, but several do stand out from the rest. "Kitten on the Keys" (Confrey's most famous composition, here done full justice), "Meandering" (which just glides and lilts along like feathers on a breeze), "Kinda Careless" (a sensuous, seductive little number), "Yokel Opus" (a snappy little foxtrot), "Coaxing the Piano" (which seems almost an homage to 'Twelfth Street Rag', in a skewed way), "Movie Ballet" (which sounds exactly like its title would suggest), and "Rhythm Venture" (so gracefully syncopated, it's practically a marvel).

Any and all Confrey and jazz fans should consider this album as required listening, and well worth owning. The price alone is reason enough - you cannot go wrong with Naxos' rates. But even if it were four times the price, it would still be a bargain.

Almost , Nearly, perfect.......2003-10-25

Wonderful selection of pieces, most of these are lesser-known Confrey and tend to represent his more "Serious" music. Perhaps because of that the pianist (a superb performer) tends to emphasize their concert qualities over their popular music aspects. This is only a tiny complaint. There's a lot of excellect music here, and at Naxos' low price it's a bargan.

Much more than Kitten On the Keys.......2002-05-16

If you thought an album of Zez Confrey music would be track after track like Dizzy Fingers or Kitten On the Keys, you are in a for a pleasant surprise with this superb CD.

The performances of the said party pieces are fast, furious and fun, but there are also some great blues renditions, and some lyrical, reflective pieces.

I would have preferred if the CD had included a few more of the well-known pieces like My Pet, Poor Buttermilk and You Tell 'Em, Ivories, but the many pieces I had never heard of are interesting, and are played beautifully.

Zany yet poetic!.......2000-09-04

Once again, in its "American Classics" series, Naxos has pulled a pleasant surprise rabbit out of the hat. Zez Confrey must be a new name for virtually everyone, unless they are well past my own age, and I don't go back quite that far. The name was certainly new for me, but a few of the pieces on this disc brought memories flooding back, most likely because my parents once had them coupled on an ancient 78 shellac.

Confrey (1895 - 1971) had been relegated pretty much to the dustbin of history before this release. But he did have his days in the sun between the two world wars. Undoubtedly his brightest moment was when he shared billing with George Gershwin and Paul Whiteman on the occasion of the premiere for Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, where Confrey had the stage in the first half of the concert and Gershwin in the second. For the most part, after that February, 1924 "An Experiment in Modern Music" concert of Whiteman's, the paths of Gershwin and Confrey began to diverge; Gershwin was, to put it simply, an overnight success.

All of the music on this album is fun, and virtually all of it demands virtuosic pianistic ability, which Confrey must certainly have possessed. Listening to it is like taking a trip down memory lane, back to the popular music in the first third of the previous century. There are pieces which have clear roots in ragtime, embellished upon and brought forward by a few decades, and at least a selection or two which sound very much like Gershwin preludes in their "bluesy" feel. It's also clear that Confrey was not unaware of the classical music of the period, because a few of the pieces capture the idioms of the piano music of Rachmaninoff and Ravel of that period (although they soon veer off into "Confrey territory"). If you listen carefully, you'll even hear a passing reference or two to Chopin. But, like the Rachmaninoff and Ravel musical allusions, these too are in fact just "passing references."

But most of the album is pure Confrey-style pianistic wizardry: Fleet fingers, crossing hands, syncopations and rhythmic "irregularities" with the colorfully descriptive titles of "Meandering", "Coaxing the Piano" and "Stumbling." And his two most famous pieces (which, probably, many of us have never heard), "Kitten on the Keys" and "Dizzy Fingers." (In fact, it was "Dizzy Fingers" and "Stumbling" which must have been the coupling on that ancient 78, because they were immediately recognizable.)

Eteri Andjaparidze is an excellent technician in this work, which can be very demanding of technique if it is to be pulled off properly. By and large, she does very well by it. In particular, she succeeds in capturing the passing allusions to the classical piano music of the time. If I had my druthers, I might ask for a little more panache, or insouciance, if you like, in the Confrey specialities noted in the previous paragraph. But who can quibble, especially at the Naxos price, without appearing to be a piker?

Neat stuff for a refreshing change of pace, with an opportunity to hear an hour's worth of music by someone who had been ignored for too long. That's a "get it" recommendation!

Brilliant!.......2000-03-22

I have no idea what Jason Verlinde meant by saying that Eteri Andjaparidze sounds "a tad robotic" on certain pieces on her new Zez Confrey album; indeed, the Republic of Georgia pianist sounds absolutely marvelously free in her interpretations. I cannot hear anything "robotic" at all in her playing. She approaches the intricate syncopations of Confrey's music with dazzling style. She is technically proficient enough to take Confrey's tempi at a furious pace, when necessary, in pieces such as "Kitten on the Keys" and "Dizzy Fingers," and to create a sustained, beautiful flow to the music in such "impressionistic" pieces as "Sparkling Waters" and "Mighty Lackawana." The selections which will remind the listener of Art Deco New York in the 1920's and 1930's, are taken at exactly the right tempo, and Ms. Andjaparidze syncopates the rhythms in a sparkling manner. I was utterly amazed at how a pianist, trained in the Republic of Georgia, could evoke the rhythms and style of American music of this type. But she does! In addition, the piano has been recorded beautifully, with sparkling tone at the treble end, and a rich, full bass. I purchased this CD a few hours after reading Frank Behrens' review. It is a wonderful addition to my collection of American music. I urge you to hear this excellent release. Naxos is to be commended for making it available.

A Fabulous Introduction to Igor Stravinsky!!.......2004-05-19

Sony Music's "The Essential Igor Stravinsky" truly lives up to its title. This double-CD set includes nearly every important piece of work (either in part or in whole) by the great Russian composer. The set also presents the pieces in chronological order beginning in 1908 with "Fireworks" and ending in 1966 with his final piece, the short but simple "Owl and The Pussycat". In between, there are excerpts from Stravinsky's most famous works including the first part of "The Rite Of Spring" and highlights from the "Firebird" and "Petrushka" ballets. There are also lesser-known works included as well as his harmonically rearranged version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" (a rendition which caused a stir in the early 1940's). The entire collection concludes with a rare recorded interview with Igor Stravinsky himself in which he remembers the infamous premere of "The Rite Of Spring".
The CD booklet includes detailed liner notes as well as a written tribute by Trey Anastasio of the band Phish. The sound quality of the recordings is amazing (even on the historic 1934 recording of "Piano Rag Music"). All in all, this an excellent collection of works by the great Igor Stravinsky. In a sense, this compilation gives the composer the 'rock musician' treatment. It's a 'greatest hits' album and a career-spanning retrospective that serves as an ideal introduction to Igor's music. Even if your not a fan of Classical music, it isn't difficult to listen to the works of Stravinsky and not be stirred.

Music for Elevators.......2007-05-01

Mantovani has gained a reputation in some quarters for producing "beautiful" orchestral versions of standard pop songs; in others, his arrangements have been compared to "elevaor music" - the kind of material once used in institutional settings like malls, elevators, and dentist's offices. In short, we have lifeless, bloodless cover versions of pop standards that by themselves have been regarded with disdain by many listeners.

This impressive compilation contains a bounty of those sweet violins and voices in a style that has long since passed its usefulness. The best moments are campy and unintentionally funny, as when Mantovani attempts "contemporary" hits by Nillson his ilk. This is orchesetral music for people who have never benefitted from a grounding in the classics. Compared even to outfits like Sounds Orchestral, the sound is drab and musty. It's hard to imagine anybody listening to this kind of thing anymore.

I have been looking for years for great orchestral music that actually moves me and keeps my attention. I am a musician, and I enjoy vareity in timbre (tone color) which orchestras use, however, sometimes I get bored with certain peices because they are not "catchy" enough.
THIS however, is exactly what I have been looking for. Every Song here is absolutely so beautiful, relaxing, and emotional, that I almost want to cry because of how inspiring these cd's are for me, and that is very rare for me to say something like that. I cannot believe I did not find out about this group before. Though I do not have any other cd's by this group, I will say I LOVE this release.
How can you not buy this when you get 3 cd's for the price of 1?

I had some old Mantovani LP's that I loved. This CD set is nice listening, but it sounds like it was recorded with an orchestra half the size of the originals. They are OK, but not what I had hoped for.

Why do another recording? Why not just reissue the LP originals on CD?

I have an original recording C.D. of Mantovani and i expected this to be the same.Good listening but not like the real thing i will be more careful in the future to make sure it is the Maestro

The Greatest Music CD there Ever Was.......2006-05-10

I am a boy who dislikes Romantic Music. I love video game music. But this CD whisked my heart away, and now that I have lost my copy, I have longed deeply for the days--just two years ago--that I listened to this CD endlessly. A beautiful alignment in music will capture you in a trance like now other--from the haunting tones of the Intermezzo, to the forceful Monteques & Capulets. I'm not so keen on what comes after Monteques & Capulets, but nonetheless, this is a CD to end all CDs. I recommend it to anybody who simply likes to listen to music without words! Just listen to it while doing something else; maybe with headphones. Enjoy, relax, and feel the songs travelling through you.
