Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Excellent recording.......2007-05-12
If you are a fan of classical guitar than this is a must own set. I enjoy every moment.
Highly Recommended!.......2006-12-23
I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves music--period! Christopher Parkening is unquestionably one of the greatest classical guitarists of all-time. He embodies personal excellence like no other and is a brilliant artist. This CD is a must-have for any classical enthusiast. My favorite pieces include: Tárrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra," "Romance," Bach's "Prelude No. 6," and Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez." There are other versions of these pieces as well, but I always prefer Parkening's renditions, as they are oh so extraordinary--especially the recording of Aranjuez!! Other guitarists never seem to capture the essence of Rodrigo's musical masterpiece (e.g., Göran Söllescher in "Mad About Guitars"). But Parkening did! And the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was a perfect accompaniment.
This CD is definitely worth buying. Included is a CD booklet, which illustrates the history of Parkening's illustrious career, interesting tidbits about all 25 recorded pieces, and several photos of his early life to his "breathtaking performance" at Rodrigo's 90th birthday celebration at the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1992.
Amazing.......2006-05-08
I am not going to go into great detail. I am working on a degree in classical guitar and I can say this is something to strive for. His musical interpretation of the peices represented here are some of the best I've heard. His tone, color, and phrasing is incredible.
A gentleman musical agreement! .......2006-03-16
In guitar ` s playing there have been many renowned performers, gifted of exuberant technique. But curiously the Apollonian playing is not by itself strictly enough. The guitar is the instrument which is closer to heart as any other one. It demands from you passion and sentiment. There have been three well known guitarists, one of them from England and the other one from Spain and the third one from Japan whose sensibility was totally absent in their performances.
But fortunately for us, there have been notable interpreters that have been maintained a desired balance and contrast between brain and heart, achieving great distinction and total acknowledgement around the world. I would name seven primordial names along the instrument `s story. First of all: the mythic soloist Andres Segovia, Regino Sainz de la Maza, John Williams, Alirio Diaz, Manuel Berrueco, Siegfried Behrend and Christopher Parkening, among the most representative ones of a great list.
Christopher Parkening `s career has made a brilliant colorist, an impeccable and sensitive interpreter of this well reduced repertoire. His profound artistic conviction and convincing phrasing has been a perpetual motive of constant invitations and presentations around the world.
Extreme virtuosity.......2005-09-25
CP has become my chief inspiration to improve as a classical guitarist. His performances here are, without exception, phenomenal. He makes the most difficult pieces sound effortless. I prefer CP over John Williams because, while Williams is also unquestionably a master, he sounds a bit robotic to me at times. CP, on the other hand, never sacrifices musicality to precision. He sublimely maintains both.

Customer Reviews:
A good recording as far as it goes.......2000-09-14
Janos Starker is undoubtedly on of the best cellists of our time, and his technique is effortless on all of these virtuoso selections. Not only is his execution flawless, he is one of a few artists who can make their individual styles come out beautifully in a recording. His tone is strong and compelling in all of the selections, never forced but also never obsessed with smoothing over every trace of an individual performance. As a result the recording has a wonderfully spontaneous and solid flavor. Highlights are David Popper's Hungarian Rhapsody and the Falla Danse Rituelle. Unfortunately, it is true that many of these virtuoso pieces simply do not hold the listener time and time again as do, for example, the Brahms cello sonatas or the Dvorak concerto. So though you may listen to this recording many times (and get to love Janos Starker's playing in the process) also buy his recording of the Dvorak.

Customer Reviews:
Liona Boyd.......2007-03-26
It's interesting, I think, to note how Miss Boyd's style and technique seem to polarise the current reviews for her album "The Spanish Album". I certainly wasn't aware that Miss Boyd is regarded as "a light weight" in the classical guitar world.
I can only say that as a humble amateur classical guitarist, I remain an avid admirer of her interpretation of several of the standard classics on this album.
Her virtuosity in Gran Jota has already been referred to: may I also single out the sweet expressiveness of her playing in Capricio Arabe (which I suggest cannot be matched by any other modern recording)as well as the fascinating discords in Asturias.
Liona is the Queen of Classical Guitar Technique?????.......2006-01-20
Yes, and I'm Clark Kent, reporter for a small town daily. Liona Boyd achieved her fame through non musical means. As a musician she leaves a great deal to be desired. Her technique is modest. Her interpretive skills are nonexistent. Proclaiming her "queen of classical guitar technique" is only revealing of one's ignorance. I only wish there was a zero star rating.
If you wish to hear the real McCoy I recommend Martha Masters.
GIMME A BREAK!!.......2005-03-01
"music fan" from rochester--the coward can't even sign his name after he trashes Ms. Boyd's phenomenol talent--where's YOUR latest masterpiece?? "don't waste yer ears"--puh-LEEEZ!! AND "VINCES"--my, aren't we SNOOTY! GIMME A BREAK YOU TWO!! LIONA BOYD KICKS NYLON ASS! BUY THIS CD!
Un-F***ing believable.......2004-09-19
I had never heard of this chick until I started Flamenco lessons. All I can say is WOW!!!
Liona? Please..........2001-06-10
Boyd is, in fact, considered a lightweight in the world of classical guitar. Sure, she's sold recordings, but not anything worth listening to. If you're looking for excellent female classical guitarrists, look for Antigoni Goni and Sharon Isbin. Don't waste your ears on Boyd.

Annoy Your Annoying Neighbors!.......2003-01-23
Come on - you know they're going to hate classical music, so when your annoying upstairs neighbor decides to vacuum at 1 in the morning, take out this CD and blast 'em with track 11: Mars, The Bringer of War!
Seriously, this is a great CD for getting you up and energized in the morning - and they're darned good recordings. Enjoy!
It's a Hoot!.......2000-09-25
This is highway driving music for me. I love cranking it up while I tool down the road. It's also a pick-me-up. Annoyed by the guy in the car next to you playing obnoxious noise that passes for music? Blast him back with this classical baby.
Moshing in the orchestra pit!.......1999-06-11
Let's face it, the composers of the classical era were the rock stars of their time, complete with all-night parties and illegitimate children. This collection of lease-breaking, window-rattling, ground-pounding classical selections will impress even the most hard core metal head (for whom this appears to have been released for). If the 1812 Overture (complete with cannons!) doesn't get you psyched up, nothing will. Highly reccomended for those who love classical music for the sheer thrill of it all, or those who want to make their way from "Stairway to Heaven" to "The Ride of the Valkyries"!
(I've played this at FULL BLAST on my van's stereo with the windows down and got the wildest looks from other drivers at the stop lights!)
Bring down the house!!!.......1999-03-28
Don't feel guilty, this CD really rocks! For the many people who do not listen to classical music because of a perceived boredom, listen to this CD! If you enjoy driving your car at excessive speeds, skydiving, or being shot out of a cannon, then this CD is probably for you. We are NOT kidding. This music will move you, as well as any furniture that is not bolted down!

Brass Players Delight.......2000-10-20
At age 82, a professional musician and brass player since age 12, I consider this as fine an exhibition of trumpet playing as I have ever heard. The music is Bach (i.e., of the master). The orchestra plays well indeed and the recording quality is excellent. And the trumpet playing? It is masterful. Excellent. Simply superb!

Customer Reviews:
"Nothing is more beautiful than a guitar, save perhaps two," ..........2005-10-24
wrote Frederic Chopin. Those who enjoy classical guitar music find special pleasure in duets. The repertoire for duets is less frequently played, yet offers more possibilities for textural and harmonic effects than solo guitar. In such capable hands as Christopher Parkening and David Brandon, few musical experiences could give greater listening pleasure.
This album is, sadly, no longer in print and thus makes it even more collectable. Please buy this CD before you loose the chance to hear some the most beautifully played classical guitar duets ever recorded.
Parkening and Brandon Duo.......2001-12-14
This duo plays very well; however, the best tracks of this CD are on the Parkening "Great Recordings" double CD. Thus buying that CD would get you the best of this CD plus a lot of other good recordings. The duo's performance of "La Vida Breve," "Intermezzo," and "Evening Dance" are my favorites (and are included on the "Great Recordings" CD).

A Great cd!.......2006-12-15
I love it. To me, every note of this sounds gorgeous. There is a really wide variety of songs. Every track is like the title says, a "virtuoso cello encore". Her playing is very expressive and beautiful but also has a flawless, effortless quality. This CD is over 75 minutes long and was recorded in only a couple days. Her concerts must be amazing.

Mike Kenally - Writes And Performs A Symphonic Work Of Art.......2007-07-08
Never one to rest on his Laurels Mike Keneally takes a complete left turn and records this symphonic rock album with Metropole Orkest. This is truly a collaborative symphonic work and not just a guitarist with symphony type of album. Although Keneally guitar and vocals are featured throughout plenty of room is also left for various symphony instruments to take their turn at lead. The percussion section is especially vibrant in several of the sections here. I would think that this disc could appeal to both classical and rock fans. The music and lyrics are based on the children's story and for the most part works fantastically. Kenally, of course throws in some terrific guitar work throughout the disc. The album is divided into 13 different parts, but it is really one 60 minute symphonic work. Kenally's output for me is somewhat inconsistent and I was a bit hesitant buying this one, but it turns out to be a delightful album and another interesting chapter in Keneally's varied career. If you are looking for a true symphony / rock collaboration pick this one up.
Astounding!.......2004-12-27
It started with me finding out that Mike Keneally played with Steve Vai and Frank Zappa. From there I went to his web site and "Radio Free Keneally" where you can hear Mike whenever you'd like. Then I ordered "Dog" and "The Universe Will Provide". I don't usually like to mix rock and classical. In fact, other attempts I've heard don't really mix at all. I don't really know how to describe this. It's classical music with electric guitar or jazz with a fifty piece orchestra jamming full bore. The Metropole Orkest proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that they can get down as much if not more than any rock and roll band. The whole album is just cool and unusual and a rewarding listen every time through. 5 big stars for the best thing I've heard this year.
Not your father's (or anyone else's) "Symphonic Rock".......2004-11-16
This is not Symphonic Rock. This is not a typical "Guitar + Orchestra" thing. This is not a String Quartet Tribute to Keneally. This is a roughly 60 minute composition commisioned by and featuring Holland's Metropole Orkest. I find it tough to describe this album, other than to say that it is simultaneously quite surprising and just what you'd expect if you're a Keneally fan. That is, as you're listening, you'll be astounded, and when you're done, you'll say, "Of COURSE it sounds like that!"
There is variety in emotional tones, in timbre and in texture, yet the composition maintains its feel as a whole work. Rock audiences may find more to love here than classical audiences, as the orchestra features a top-notch rock/jazz rhythm section that is exploited in many pieces; that alone may alienate classical fans by virtue of contextual unfamiliarity. With that said, there are guitar solos, but guitar is not necessarily "the featured instrument" of the piece. Indeed, there are several solos by a variety of instruments throughout, and the melodies are likewise carried by a variety of instruments throughout, not just guitar.
Overall, do not expect the "a few minutes of symphony followed by guitar cadenzas or bands jamming out" format you may have heard in other genre-crossing albums of this nature. This is a fully realized, impeccably recorded composition shining proudly in the Keneally canon.
Special note: the tune "Worrywart Spoonguy" may be among Keneally's best: a triumphant theme, rich layering, wicked banjo, a pretty nifty solo, and that insanely cool recurring arpeggiated riff (often played by wicked banjo). Plus, at the end of the tune, a fully orchestrated visit to "Spoonguy" from the album hat!

A whistling wonder.......2007-01-04
I ordered this cd as inspiration for my African Grey parrot. (no kidding) I adopted him a couple of months ago and his first family taught him some basic tunes. I ask you, how many times do I have to hear the 'wolf whistle'? While he's hopefully absorbing some new, more challenging tunes, I'm enjoying listening to familiar scores whistled, accompanied by a piano.
Terrific Album!.......2002-04-05
Leo Eide will be remembered as one of the greatest whistlers of all time. I cannot recommend this album highly enough.
