5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2006-04-06

This is my favorite Bartoli recording. Her rich mezzo-soprano voice feels custom-made for Rossini. I own this CD-it's my second copy, I wore out the first one!

If you are browsing here in search of your first Cecilia Bartoli CD, this is it. It's one of the CDs I can't live without.

5+ stars!

4 out of 5 stars A fine disk of selections from Rossini operas by one of the premier mezzo-sopranos.......2005-12-30

Bartoli is one of the premier mezzo-sopranos currently singing. This music shows off her vocal flexibility and emotional range quite well. Rossini is the right kind of composer for her musical gifts because he allows the voice to sing beautifully and without pushing it to extremes. Bartoli displays her dynamic range, from a whisper to a full forte while maintaining a singing tone. Her range from low notes to high soprano notes is quite impressive and delights the listeners (as she and the composer fully intend).

Here she sings numbers from various Rossini operas with full orchestral accompaniment and some chorus to provide context. However, the point is much less the drama than the vocal display the selection allows Bartoli.

The notes provided that describe each of the works is very helpful as are the supplied lyrics and English translation.

This is a very pleasurable disk and one you can listen to many times and still find new delights. The only thing that I find the least bit difficult is when Bartoli resorts to aspirating vowels (putting an "h" on each note of the vowel) in runs and melismas. She doesn't do it all the time, but it is jarring for me when she does. It is really a flaw, but a minor one given all her great gifts and talents. It just gets in the way, however.

That being said, I still recommend the disk and say, ENJOY! Learn to love opera and it will enhance your life. Really, it will!

4 out of 5 stars Best CD by Bartoli!.......2001-09-04

The most enjoyable Bartoli CD for me was "Potrait".
Other than that, this is one of the enjoyable CDs from Her.
Money worthy CD with Belcanto Style.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......1999-02-24

Everything about this CD is perfect. The music is great, her singing incredible, the production just right. This one will grow on you and sound fresh or different 5 years down the line. Warning: this recording got me into opera!

5 out of 5 stars This is my favorite Cecilia Bartoli recording........1998-10-11

This artist's voice is hypnotic and compelling, very rich and expressive. I recommend this recording even for those who are not opera fans, as I am not. If you enjoy exquisite sound, you should hear this recording-a treat for the connosseur of any type of vocal music. I am presently on my second copy of this recording-I wore the first one out. My personal favorite is track 3, Giusto Ciel...

Here are two of Rossini's "secular" cantatas: "The Lament of Harmony on the Death of Orpheus" for tenor, male chorus, and orchestra, written when he was a 16-year-old conservatory student, and the far more substantial "Wedding of Thetis and Peleus," one of many such pieces he composed for special occasions, commissioned for the marriage of an Italian princess to a French prince. Both consist of primarily short, separate, contrasting numbers, most of which would be perfectly at home in the opera house.

Indeed, Rossini himself evidently made no distinction between the genres, recycling and adapting arias freely from one to the other. No wonder much of the music here sounds familiar. It is also very beautiful. There are some echoes of Haydn and Mozart, but most is vintage Rossini, full of charm, grace, and beguilingly lovely, celestially floating melodies, as well as exciting sections of high drama. Only the end of the Wedding Cantata gets repetitious, as if Rossini had run out of ideas.

The orchestration is singularly felicitous, with wonderful woodwind passages and horn solos. The vocal parts are extremely difficult, demanding agile coloratura, melting lyricism, and dramatic weight. All are stratospheric, going up to many high B-flats and B's; the tenors have several C's and even a D. The singing ranges from excellent to spectacular; only the soprano is a little shrill at times. Tenors Florez as Peleus and Kelly as Harmony are outstanding, and Cecilia Bartoli, who gets stellar treatment with the only picture in the booklet, also gets every chance to display her strengths in all their glory: the intense, focused voice, pure throughout a huge range; the large palette of colors and timbres; the rippling, immaculately clear coloratura. The orchestra and chorus, led by Riccardo Chailly, are splendid. --Edith Eisler

I never get bored of this CD, everytime I listen to it I just love it more and more everyday. All the songs are very relaxing. I think that everyone will enjoy it, it's just great.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Pleasure.......2001-06-01

This recording of two of Rossini's many cantatas is an abolute delight. Everyone involved communicates the joy of making these early works come alive. Bartoli and Chailly are known qualities, and the former contributes some of the most spectacular vocal pyrotechnics I have ever heard; I don't remember any "superstar" who so fully lives up to his or her hype the way this singer does with every recording. Chailly is a Rossini specialist who works his usual magic with this unfamiliar material. The other four soloists deserve their equal billing with Bartoli, tenor Florez and soprano Scano doing outstanding work. Too bad space could not be found to include their photos along with the mezzo and maestro in the otherwise excellent accompanying booklet. This disc is a gem.

5 out of 5 stars Virtuosic.......2001-05-24

This CD is a rare treat. It combines a light classic "Mozartian" style with a melodic Rossinian belcanto. The vocal performances are very good. Bartoli and the young tenor Juan Diego Florez as the headliners. Juan Diego Florez really stands out on this CD as a vocal force to look out for. He is very young, mid-twenties, but has an extremely beautiful and fluid voice. He exhibits practically no vocal strain. Bartoli's coloratura is stunning as usual. The range she possess is well demonstrated on this disc. Fans of classical music will not be dissapointed by this disc. It is well worth the cost.

3 out of 5 stars MUSIC FOR A ROYAL WEDDING.......2000-09-04

"Le nozze di Teti e di Peleo" (The Marriage of Thetis and Peleus") was first heard in Naples on 24th of April, 1816, and was composed for the wedding of Princess Maria Carolina and the Duke of Berry. This occurred only shortly after the disastrous Roman premiere of "Il barbiere di Siviglia," which was given its first performance on 20th February 1816. Some music from "Il barbiere" shows up in this cantata, as does music from other operas, such as "Il Turco in Italia." Juan Jose Lopera is a light-voiced tenor and sounds a little strained on top at times. His low notes are quite good. Magdalena Schaeffer in the role of Teti, has a nice voice and uses it well for the most part. Tatjana Korovina is probably the star of the recording, as she sings her coloratura well and sounds ravishing in the duet with Giunone. Donald George is a heavier tenor than Lopera and he sings the role of Giove with authority, but, mezzo-soprano Sonia Malta, as Giunone, has a wide vibrato that detracts from her vocal performance. The orchestra and chorus do their work well enough. As a bonus on this recording we get ballet music from the cantata "Omaggio umiliato a Sua Maesta." (This, I believe, was composed in the early 1820's.) This music I find uninteresting, but well-played by I Virtuosi di Praga under the baton of Marc Andrae. (He conducts the same orchestral forces in "Le nozze.") Rossini collectors and buffs will probably be interested in this. There is an English article about the cantata and there is also a libretto.
