His guitar-slinging contributions to the Yardbirds having dwarfed those of Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page, Mrs. Beck's bad boy spent the next several years playing blues-rock (the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart), soul-rock (the second edition of that band), and leading a power trio. Then, he made this all-instrumental album, which was a huge 1975 success. Produced by George Martin, the nine-song session finds Beck fronting a keyboards-bass-drums outfit, augmented by some tastefully unobtrusive string arrangements. Call it a jazz-fusion album at your own risk. While Beck's playing is less in-your-face than his previous efforts, all the fierce attack, thick tone, microtonal bends, distortion, feedback, vibrato, sustain, sonic hoodoo, and rhythmic and harmonic creativity that the man's fans have come to know and love can be heard here. "Freeway Jam" boasts the most memorable melody and thus remains a Classic Rock staple to this day. "Cause We've Ended As Lovers"--written by Stevie Wonder--is Beck's gorgeous tribute to one of his own guitar-heroes, the now-deceased Roy Buchanan. --Don Waller

Against the grain but urgently needed............2007-07-16
While Jeff Beck's offering here as well as his "virtuosity" have been touted by many realms of guitar aficionadom, I can't really say that the album here (or really much of his work) represents the best of the fusion genre or even serves as a mindblowing example of how electric guitar can be played without a pick (something that many Beck devotees point out ad nauseam...ugh). His ideas really don't coalesce all that well particularly here although "Cause We've ended as Lovers" has its moments but one song really doesn't cut it.
Anyway if you really want to delve into fusion from around this time more check out Parliament, Miles Davis ("Bitches Brew Era"), or Santana. For good examples of electric guitarists who axe the pick (no pun intended) check out Mark Knopfler and Lindsey Buckingham.
Fantastic.......2007-07-09
Beck is AWESOME. One of the most underrated guitarists I've heard...ever! He's definitely every bit as good as (and probably better than) Vai, Satriani, or Wylde. Beck has proven throughout the course of his career that he is talented, flexible in his style, and can play just about any type of music...WELL!
This is a "must have" CD for anyone who loves to hear a great guitarist and appreciates the complexities and nuances of what is going on with the instrument during the song, regardless of the type of music. I would also highly recommend Jeff Beck "Guitar Shop" and "You Had it Coming".
'One' of the best guitar master works, ever........2007-06-23
Ok, so after just receiving my long awaited copy of "Blow by Blow", Digitally Remastered, Reissued and Remixed by George Martin my vote is final. This is `one' of the all-time best guitar master works ever. "Scatterbrain", "Cause We've Ended As Lovers", "Freeway Jam" and of course "Diamond Dust" being the highlights. The other trac's are also very worthy grooves on this CD. The playback on a pro rig is incredible but if you have no perks as a professional it also sounds great on my iPod ripped in high-res. :-) Listen to the complete work.
enjoyable for the guitar lovers out there.......2007-05-19
I don't know much about Jeff Beck. I know he's listed as a highly innovative guitarist with a distinct sound, and that Rod Stewart used to be the lead singer in the older version of his band. I also know he's supposedly a hard person to get along with, which explains all the lineup changes over the years. Ritchie Blackmore had the same problem with the band Rainbow. No two Rainbow albums are alike because of that.
Anyway, since I know very little about this underrated guitar genius, I told myself "It's time to buy something... how about Blow By Blow?" Good choice? Yes! I also had friends who helped influence my decision to check out his stuff.
Let's be completely honest- even though "Freeway Jam" and "You Know What I Mean" are the popular songs on the album, you won't hear those songs on regular FM radio. Maybe back in the day, when this album was brand new, those songs would be played. No longer, unfortunately.
Really, my impression of Beck based on this experience was a very guitar-dominated album, with the occasional touches of slow blues, but mostly focusing on lengthy jams. There are some moments of funk and jazz, but those don't happen very often.
It's definitely not a typical guitar instrumental album, because of Beck's talent for throwing in dazzling little touches here and there. I actually love the music though, and repeated listens reveals a very spectacular and worthy album overall.
We know what you mean.......2007-02-13
Blow by Blow (1975) Jeff Beck's fifth studio album.
After a brief but potential stint with Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice in '73 and '74, Jeff finally went out on his own. The 'Jeff Beck Group' was finally at an end, and Beck knew that he would be going solo from now on. The result was a complete turn-around from his normal material, but that didn't bring it down in the slightest. In fact, it helped to develop his sound in a new way; he took on a new genre of music and made it his own. The sound is very distinct, as it is on the follow-up album "Wired". But what happened here in 1975 was nothing short of spectacular, and it stands as one of the finest and best-selling instrumental albums of all time, climbing the charts to hit an incredibly respectable number four.
Though every track here is outstanding, there are a few that absolutely blow you away. The starter, "You Know What I Mean", is a funky, jazz-rooted song that lures you into what this album is all about. Beck doesn't waste time to impress you. Solos sear across this first song which also features some very neat drum work. Three tracks that follow after this, "Constipated Duck", "Air Blower", and "Scatterbrain", are all genius, diving into a mix of rock and fusion, taking the jaziness of it and throwing it all around. All of these appear frequently in the sets that Mr. Beck does live.
The next and most famous track, "Cause We've Ended As Lovers", is Beck's signature song. No one dares to cover this song because they know that they can't do it better than Jeff. He makes his guitar cry. It pleads, weeping and wailing, yet it sighs so softly. It is incredible the amount of control that Beck demonstrates with his Stratocaster on this song. Another standout is "Freeway Jam", which has remained a radio staple for several years. Overall, this album is a must-have to anyone who is considering even looking to play a guitar. Instrumental albums don't get much better than this, and even Beck, in all his greatness, has found it difficult to produce another album of this calibre. Five stars up and away.

Rice is amazing.......2007-02-16
Just incredible, I've never heard anyone as smooth as Rice when it comes to bluegrass guitar pickin'.
A great sampling of Tony Rice guitar.......2007-01-10
As a long-time Tony Rice fan, this CD is a great compilation of some of his best. Very good listening.
Excellent range of bluegrass guitar.......2006-09-05
For anyone interested in the instrumental skills of Tony Rice, this CD presents a large and inspiring overview with selections from a variety of recordings. Of course it could be even larger while still confining itself to just bluegrass but the range is sufficient to give one a good sense of Rice's style which provides a unifying theme even in groups of musicians as disparate as the ones presented here. I am not sure what prompts the order of tracks. They are certainly not chronological but the overall order is quite attractive. Of course Rice's vocal abilities have been just as extraordinary but for anyone interested in a bluegrass instrumentalist who is able to merge seamlessly into any bluegrass setting, this is an excellent recording. The speed at which they play Gold Rush is breathtaking.
Tony Rice is the bluegrass master!.......2005-07-29
Every time I listen to this CD I get chill bumps. Tony Rice can play the guitar like no other and this CD collection of his bluegrass music proves it! I have seem Tony live over 10 times now and this CD covers all I have heard live. Really great stuff. Buy this CD! You will love it.
Tony Rice and "The" Guitar.......2004-12-23
Tony Rice is the greatest acoustic guitarist I've ever heard. His right hand knows what the left hand is doing. The tone and balance in his style haven't been equaled although every flatpicker after him owes him a debt of gratitude. The tunes are fiddle toons for the most part with a fantastic supporting cast which has been the norm for Tony throughout his recording history. This is a great collection spaning much of his career.
The collection showcases the fine instrument the man plays as well. I first heard and saw this guitar in person about 25 years ago and it sounds even better today. It's as legendary as the current owner. The instrument was obscure for it's first 25 years. Then it was purchased in 1960 for Clarence White by his father for a mere $35. Tony Rice purchased it in 1975. The 1935 Martin D28 is the finest guitar of it's kind in the world. And it's no accident that Tony Rice owns and plays it.

Electric Guitarist ~ John McLaughlin.......2006-08-15
Flashback to the 70's, this album is still kicking it in the 21st century. A must have.
Hodge Podge.......2006-06-22
John McLaughlin is an unparalleled guitarist who has played on enthralling albums that sound like the songs featured here, sometimes with the same musicians who appear as guests. Unfortunately, aside from a distracting late-70s studio polish, McLaughlin himself seems to be the only element unifying "Electric Guitarist." The playlist jumps from (1) Mahavishnu-lite to (2) Santana guitar duel to (3) smooth jazz to (4) 70s fusion to (5) Lifetime-style prank to (6) Hendrix tribute before ending with (7) some kind of forerunner to New Age jazz. This album may be a nice portfolio for McLaughlin's work, as the cover promises, and some of the guests manage to add something new (e.g., Carlos Santana, Patrice Rushen, Jack Bruce). But how often will you be in the mood for all of those styles crammed up against each other? Instead, buy the original albums that McLaughlin revisited here.
Plug In, Turn On, Rejoice.......2006-04-17
The title and cover of this CD are hilarious. To call John McLaughlin an Electric Guitarist is to call James Brown funky and the Atlantic Ocean wet. With Hendrix pressed firmly into the pages of history and Clapton nodding off in complacency, McLaughlin has ascended to preeminence with little debate. He has been prolific and mercurial, a constantly restless, evolving prodigy. From the onset he blurred the barrier between rock and jazz, and played a major role in the birth of fusion. Although Miles Davis may have "booked the room," McLaughlin and Tony Williams probably influenced Davis as much as he influenced them. If you are not already familiar with The Tony Williams Lifetime recordings, featuring McLaughlin, do yourself a favor. McLaughlin is simply on fire.
The manic intensity of The Mahavishnu Orchestra, which followed, was at times more technical than musical, but revelatory all the same. My Goal's Beyond, (if you can find it), shows McLaughlin drifting into a love affair with Indian music. As with other virtuoso performers, one is occasionally transfixed by the skill level, losing sight of content in the process. This is always a mistake with McLaughlin, almost equivalent to punishing him for being brilliant. McLaughlin is a soulful artist, never frivolous, always striving to find meaning and share it.
Recording this CD must have been like a college reunion for him, an opportunity to reunite with dear friends. The line-up includes major league hitters like Billy Cobham, Jerry Goodman, Carlos Santana, David Sanborn, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Jack DeJohnette, Jack Bruce, and Tony Williams. Wow. Are You The One? Are You The One? features the dream-team trio of McLaughlin, Bruce, and Williams, a true kicker. Friendship showcases the familiar and pleasing "space patrol" jam phrasing of Carlos Santana. They're all great, but the track that instantly snuck inside me is Do You Hear The Voices That You Left Behind? This tribute to John Coltrane, built on his celebrated composition Giant Steps, evokes a "top-down convertible sound" that might be described as "smooth-jazz" if that wretched term weren't an oxymoron.
In John McLaughlin - Electric Guitarist, you find a master artist in complete control of his instrument and his vision - pure joy.
Wooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-11-22
I am a growing jazz musician and this album is a must have. I am really big on the fusion/electric/acid jazz sound and this album has it all. I am very new to Mclaughlin, but any graduate of the Miles Davis camp is sure to satisfy. Every track is full of beauty and takes you to a far away place. If you do not have this album you need to get it and quick.
Very Rare Artistry!.......2004-06-03
John McLaughlin remains one of the more fascinating Miles Davis
alumni because, like John Coltrane before him, his growth as a
musician, band-leader, innovator and artist (believe me, they
are all separate things!) can easily be traced on record. Also,
like Coltrane, his advancement along those lines is steady and
phenomenal. This particular CD is a landmark because it is here
where all of these qualities first fuse as a complete, satisfying
and prodigious whole.
From his original, startling early work with Miles, to Tony Williams' Lifetime (an overlooked power-trio if ever there was one!) to Mahavishnu Orchestra, to his forays into Eastern music
and mysticism, this is where it all comes together for McLaughlin. It marks the first time that his astounding technical mastery emerges at the service of a highly ordered
musical intelligence, and not the other way around.
With the help of such friends as Billy Cobham, Jean-Luc Ponty,
Carlos Santana, Jack Bruce, Tony Williams, Patrice Rushin, David
Sanborn and others, McLaughlin weaves a program of personal,
astounding and beautiful music. Every tune represents a different marker along McLaughlin's personal musical journey, and each and every one of them is a gem. From the swaggering edge of "New York On My Mind," to the Latin-soul of "Friendship,"
to the exquisite beauty of "Every Tear From Every Eye," each tune
just gets better and better, just as McLaughlin did over the course of his career to this point. This is where we bid adieu
to McLaughlin, the enfant-terrible of jazz guitar and say hello
to McLauhlin the mature artist for the first time. And what an
artist he emerges as!!! This is one of the very few PERFECT jazz
albums ever made! There is no filler, no dead-weight, nothing on it anywhere that isn't of the first and highest order.
Get it!

"Many guitarists dabble in slide guitar, but the number of modern masters can probably be counted on one hand- Roy Rogers is surely one of them..."- Guitar Player Magazine. This Roy Rogers' first ever live CD. Drawing on inspiration and material from a career that spans decades of performing, Roy Rogers is considered one of the world1s leading parishioners of modern slide guitar. This is a Bandlink Enhanced CD which enables you to access new and exclusive Roy Rogers content- instant tour dates, news alerts, bonus music tracks, live video footage and direct chats with the Roy. Nominated for 8 Grammy1s for his production and performing work in the recording industry, Rogers1 has been immersed in the blues and roots scene and performing professionally since the ripe age of 13. This longtime Northern California resident picked up a nomination for the prestigious W.C. Handy Award in the Best Instrumentalist Guitar category last year for his release "Slideways" which hit #3 on the Blues Billboard chart. In addition, Rogers' recently co-wrote the song 3G1Nawin on It1 (on 'Silver Lining') with Bonnie Raitt which was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Female Rock Vocal Performance category. Rogers is currently being featured on OSierra Center Stage1, the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company-sponsored television series which seeks to bring exposure to underexposed American Roots and World musicians. The CD includes special guest performances by pianist Phil Aaberg, harmonica wizard Norton Buffalo, vocalist Shana Morrison and fiddler Tom Rigney. "I am first and foremost a performer and I have been playing with these players for a long time. It's great to lay it down and not have to bother with the added textures of studio polish- but keep it as gritty and fresh as possible. I also wanted to capture the band at this moment in time and I think we did that," adds Rogers.
Customer Reviews:
Ripping Slide Guitar Blues.......2006-02-14
I've always been an admirer of Roy Rogers - and I love slide guitar blues - a few of the current best purveyors being Johnny Winter, Sonny Landreth, Rory Block, John Mooney, Dave Hole, and Robert Randolph (pedal steel). Previously, some of Rogers' studio work has been a bit sterile, and sometimes his vocals can be wearing. However, in this case, Roy Rogers has set the standard in the warm, live setting of the Sierra Nevada Brewery "Big Room". All of the interaction with his longtime partner, Norton Buffalo, and the Delta Rhythm Kings, and the audience getting into it, make for an exciting listen. His slide guitar really shimmers and shakes, and all of the cuts (except for one), which were previously recorded on his other albums, really benefit from this live presentation. The recording quality itself is excellent. If you see this album - Get It!

Maryland's Danny Gatton was best known as a rockabilly cat, the man who put blistering guitar licks behind the likes of Robert Gordon, Billy Hancock and Delbert McClinton. Like his heroes Les Paul, Lenny Breau and Hank Garland, however, Gatton is both a country picker and a solid jazz man; he stole the show on a Blue Note jam session with Joshua Redman and Roy Hargrove on New York Stories in '92. Gatton kept both careers going at once; Cruisin' Deuces (1993) was a rockabilly outing, while his duet album with Philadelphia organist Joey DeFrancesco, "Relentless," is a straightahead jazz project. One pursuit reinforces the other; Gatton's jazz playing brings a harmonic sophistication to his rockabilly work, and his country experience gives his jazz solos a dramatic flair. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Psychobilly Rocker Meets Jazz Organ Monster.......2007-02-23
It's on the second cut, "Broadway," that Danny Gatton realizes what he's gotten into on this date. When you're Danny Gatton, you're used to blowing everybody else away. But Joey DeFrancesco wasn't being blown away by anybody, at least not that day. He takes a supercharged solo, and when Gatton gets it back, you can hear him quoting "I'm Beginning To See The Light." Oh, yeah. No cruising on this date. And, happily enough, the two of them proceed to blast through a program of jazzy blues.
It is clear from listening to this that while Gatton had amazing chops, he really wasn't a jazz player. That didn't stop him from having a whale of a time with Joey D, however. You could make an argument that this is one of the best examples of Gatton's playing, if only because DeFrancesco was such a worthy running-mate. Listen to them laughing on "Blues On The Half Shell"--they're having a great time. And if the idea of rockabilly rubbing up against jazz sounds appealing, you'll have a great time, too.
Realizations.......2006-11-02
Steve Grey hit the nail on the head. Gatton was putting forth a great effort... but his unschooled approach to music is rather glaring in contrast to DeFrancesco's musical prowess. But, It sounds like they were having a great time.
DeFrancesco is so articulate... heads and shoulders above the crowd. Gatton was an icon, to a degree, but when set side by side with a great all around groove doctor... the Gatton image doesn't shine as brightly, but exudes raw energy at a very high level. I personnally think it is raw energy... but a bit unpolished.
Now... I've seen Gatton many times. I'm from DC and a musician to boot. And I love Danny's style and miss him... and understand that when he came back from California after a brief period of session work... he too, recognized his technical limits.... that said; Gatton displays a straight up, off the cuff feel for the groove... Gatton was good, very good, but there were A LOT of musicians who also were and are more polished. This release demonstrates that Danny Gatton had limits. A quick listen to a lot of Gatton material will also reveal a repetitivness that cursory examinations might miss. I'm not faulting him... but laid open with DeFrancesco... those types of limitations are evident.
For a Joey DeFrancesco release... it's great. Joey is the B3 King and proves it! With Danny it still rocks and grooves and works. I still own it and enjoy the release very much.
Just pure energy, style and licks to spare!.......2006-07-05
This is the second version of this CD I have owned I like it that much that I gave one away reluctantly to a pal in England. From the moment this album starts you know you are in for a ride, and what a ride it is. From the beauty of 'The Chess Players' to the sheer intensity of 'Gearheads' , this album just overwhelms the listener with an ever-changing palette of different sounds. Is it country? Is it Jazz, Is it Rockabilly?. This is the kind of music you can't put into a category....simple as that.
One reviewer likes Hank Garland...sure, but that is comparing apples to oranges..for a start, there is NO-ONE like Joey DeFrancesco around...and the sound that these two guys produce is totally unique....it's a pity Danny is no longer with us, another one of these collaborations would have surely been a milestone, if this isn't already.
Unbelievable.......2006-01-12
This is a fantastic set of music. You have to listen to it to believe it.
Holy Chops Batman!!!.......2005-01-20
I was a sound tech for a number of years. I used to have this CD in my intermission rotation. No matter what genre of music the audience came to see, they were all blown away by the smokin' chops displayed by both musicians on this disc.

Album Description
The 7th solo album from singer/songwriter Colin Hay (from Men at Work). This album shows Colin Hay at the top of his game. It is a most compelling work from a brilliant songwriter. The album has a full electric sound with lush string and horn arrangements. Undoubtedly his best album to date.
Customer Reviews:
Colin Hay is awesome!.......2006-05-11
My husband turned me on to Colin Hay as he and his best friend from high school were big "Men at Work" fans and subsequently followed his solo career. "Company of Strangers and "How Long Will It Last?" are beautiful, beautiful songs. I love the strings in "Company of Strangers"; it's a mesmerizing song. Of course, the lyrics on this CD are fantastic, as always, especially in "How Long Will It Last?"
This is my favorite CD right now. Buy it. You will NOT be disappointed. All of the songs are good. (The only one I skip is "Lucky Bastard" because I listen to the CD in the van with my 6-year-old and 4-year-old sons. They love Colin Hay and know the lyrics!
Incidentally, my husband and I were fortunate to have seen Colin Hay in concert at a club in Denver this past year. Colin is an OUTSTANDING performer -- funny, too! I can't wait to see him again!
Colin Hay at Largo In Los Angeles.......2006-04-09
Just saw Colin tonight in the tiny club Largo on Fairfax in Los Angeles where he is a egular since he lives here - He began the set acoustic and then brought on four others, including his wife. The set lasted about 2 hours and was filled with Colin's humor and an absolutely amazing array of his solo work and some MAW singles as well. I hadn't purchased any of his solo work, but after tonight, they are all part of my collection - "Company" being the favorite since he played many of the songs found here -
As Always, Good Stuff.......2005-12-30
You may find this one a bit sleepy at first, but stick with it. It's more mid- and slow-tempo than previous Hay albums like "Looking For Jack," "Wayfaring Sons," and "Topanga." On the first pass, only "Small Town Big Hell," "No Win Situation," "Don't Wait Up," and the haunting title track really jumped out at me. However, if you give it a few tries, songs like "I Got Woken Up," "Dear J," "How Long Will it Last" and the closer really start to grow on you. I started out mildly disappointed and ended up thinking it's among the best work he's ever done. It also features the third recording thus far of "Beautiful World," this one virtually indistinguishable from the version on "Man @ Work." It's a gorgeous song, though, so fine by me. All in all, a very worthy buy for fans of this underrated artist.
I provide the following as a checklist for Colin Completists who are stymied and frustrated by the lack of availability of his solo albums. If you wanna have it all, this is what you gotta get (wherever you can get it):
- LOOKING FOR JACK [1986, not commercially available]
- WAYFARING SONS [1990, not commercially available]
- PEAKS & VALLEYS [1992, available on import]
- TOPANGA [1994, available but expensive]
- TRANSCENDENTAL HIGHWAY [1998, available]
- GOING SOMEWHERE [2000, available]
- COMPANY OF STRANGERS [2002, available]
- MAN @ WORK [2003, available]
Good luck!
Colin Hay is Amazing!.......2005-08-19
There is so much to say about this extremely talented artist, but the other reviews have done such a fine job in doing so. Along with Jeff Lynne (of ELO), Colin Hay is one of the most talented, yet under-appreciated musicians of our time. And, this album is truly one of his finest compilations. Colin is one of the few artists that can bring me to tears with the beauty of his music (in a weak moment). :) Order this CD while you can and try to see Colin in concert. You'll see exactly what I mean.
colin is brilliant.......2004-04-03
well I have seen him twice in Australia in the last 4 years and he is not to be missed. The last time was in Melbourne I flew from Perth Western Australia to see him. I love all of his album but my favs are peaks and valleys , T>Highway and Going somewhere.
There are two sites that fans can visit my page at http//www.downundercom.tripod.com which has photos reviews , articles and mosaiscs on colin hay and men at work and also another site called http//www.menatwork.br.com

Williams guitar.......2007-01-22
I gave this album to my husband for Christmas because he loves Spanish guitar. He loved the album and has downloaded it to his Ipod. The music is wonderful and John Williams plays beautifully.
Williams Truly Inspires........2005-11-26
Out of my 11 John Williams CDs, this is probably my favorite. The moods he portrays through his guitar leave me daydreaming as he plays. Although many styles and periods are represented (giving the listener a wonderful array of Williams' abilities), tracks 4-7 are so intense and well-done they inspire and provoke new ideas and concepts I've never imagined.
I believe this album is his best work.
Guitar at its very best..........2005-04-08
Let me just say, tracks 4-7 are nearly worn out on my copy
of this CD. Koyunbaba as never played before, John lets it
start in dark shadowy moods, then rise and fall until the
almighty final movement which keeps me on the edge of my
seat. As the final notes ring through, I stare sadly down
at my guitar...

Album Description
The Hollywood Blue Flames began life in 1975 as The Hollywood Fats Band, led by guitar phenomenon Michael "Hollywood Fats" Mann, and featuring what was arguably the best traditional blues line-up this side of 1954 - the multi-talented Al Blake on harmonica and vocals, legendary bassist Larry Taylor from Canned Heat, veteran drummer Richard Innes, and featuring Lloyd Glenn protege Fred Kaplan on piano. Sadly, Fats passed away unexpectedly in 1986, and the band members all went on to other successful musical ventures.
Now they've reunited for one of the most anticipated blues releases in years, under the banner The Hollywood Blue Flames - appropriately named, as they both fired and carry the torch of the blues into a new millennium. And to fill the huge musical shoes of Fats, no one could be a better choice than Kirk Fletcher, a young man who was literally raised on the sounds pioneered by the original incarnation of this band. Fletcher plays with the taste and power that truly does justice to not only this band's illustrious legacy but also the blues masters who inspired them.
The Hollywood Blue Flames literally burn their way through a set of fresh originals sprinkled with well-chosen covers on their new CD "Soul Sanctuary." This is blues with both a history and a future - and it's as fresh as today. It doesn't get any better than The Hollywood Blue Flames.

Too Cool West Coast Blues.......2006-09-23
I also stumbled upon this CD and thought I had found the Holy Grail. You can smell the smoke and taste the gin when listening to this disk. The rhythm section is rock solid, the guitar work outstanding and the interplay between the guitar and piano is just mesmerizing to me. I really enjoy the harmonica and vocal stylings too. It's just an outstanding CD and I can't stop listening to it. I would highly recommend you give this a try, the Road to Rio disk and the Hollywood Fats recordings - you won't regret it.
Where have I been?.......2006-09-09
This is another album I luckily stumbled upon. If you want hip hop, this probably is not for you, unless you have finally come to your musical senses. If you've had life experiences they sing about ( within reason, of course...I mean, who has been "born on a mountain, raised in a lion's den"?, it makes the songs more personal and special.
My favorites:
Coco Puffin' ( the sample doesn't include the soul stirring guitar work of Kirk Fletcher...maybe you can listen to the whole song from an online music service)
Flamed
Nit Wit
I'm a Lucky, Lucky Man
Black Cat Bone
Soul Sanctuary
This Is A Great Album!.......2005-05-20
This is a great album in the west coast and Chicago style blues. The band is the late Hollywood Fat's band (Hollywood Fats = Michael Mann) with Kirk Fletcher on guitar. Al Blake on vocals, harmonica & guitar, Richard Innes on drums, Fred Kaplan piano & organ, Larry Taylor bass. Kirk Fletcher is a superb guitar player and this album is a must have if you like guitar players like Ronnie Earl, Dave Specter, Alex Schultz & Steve Freund! The rest of the guys are as good as it can get!

Album Description
The Lap Steel Guitar has been called ..."the most expressive and toneful instrument ever conceived". When you hear this album, you'll know why. Featuring a diverse range of musical styles such as Country, Hawaiian, Folk, Western Swing, Surf 'Noir'and New Age, performed by spectacular musicians from The United States, Canada, Hawaii and Australia. Some of the musicians are legendary, some have played with 'legends'. All are brilliant. Included are some 'classic' songs as well as some new compositions that are pure genius. There are two vocal tracks that show another dimension to the depth and versatility the instrument has to offer. This CD is guranteed to 'steel' your heart.
Customer Reviews:
Good but a bit misleading.......2004-01-07
First-I liked the album. The good things about it included the variety and breadth of musical styles - from Bob Brozman (poster child for all things National Guitar) to Kayton Roberts who does a nice version of Bells of St. Mary's. My only gripe is that much of the music deviates from what is known as the "lap steel guitar" (a relatively small electrified six to 10 string instrument), offering various slide guitar and resonator guitar songs as well. It would be as if they called a record "all about trombones" and only include one or two songs just with trombones and the rest with other instruments. I was not disappointed with the sound, but thought that they could have either called it something else or included more actual lap steel guitars on the record.
