Amazon.com essential recording

It was inevitable that Strauss's irresistible waltzes (and other musical bits) from Der Rosenkavalier would find an existence independent of the opera; in fact, there are many listeners who prefer taking the work in conveniently small doses. Like a Viennese pastry, too much of a good thing can send you into sugar shock, and you don't have to be a musical diabetic to want to listen to "just a sliver" of Strauss's most highly caloric musical confection. Happily, Ormandy's luscious performance of the suite from the opera is so delicious that it leaves you feeling fully satisfied. Even better, the couplings are equally tempting. The suite from Le Bourgois Gentilhomme features outstanding solo contributions from members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the so-called "symphonic fragments" from Die Liebe der Danae offer a tantalizing glimpse of an unjustly neglected late masterpiece. Snack away! --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars The Lighter side of Richard Strauss .......2007-06-04

I have recently discovered Sony's reissued "Essential Classics", and it is like reliving the golden age of stereo LPs. Many of the performances feature orchestras in their prime, such as Ormandy's Philadelphia and Szell's Cleveland. The Suite to "Der Rosenkavalier" was an early '60s LP favorite of mine; the arrangement includes all the important tunes of the Opera, and the lush strings of the Philadelphia were a consensus champion by all critics of the era. The digital remastering has enhanced what already was sumptuous sound, and Anshel Brusilow, Philly's concertmaster, contributes some gorgeous solo work. Add the budget price and over 68 minutes of music, and this disc is a bargain all around.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Ormandy's best recordings.......1998-11-17

This CD is truely worthwhile to listen. I definetely recommend you to enjoy his Le Bourgeois gentilhomme. I believe the performance is the best of all stereo recordings of this work. This recording proves that Ormandy was one of the best conductors in the 20th. century.

4 out of 5 stars Mehta comes off better the less you know.......2005-10-07

These are lush excerpts from Strauss operas played to the hilt by the Berlin Phil. In the music that everybody knows, the Rosenkavalier waltzes, Mehta is not competitive--his readings are big, generalized, without wit or special interest. But who really knows the music from Der Liebe der Danae or Intermezzo? It's garrulous and unispired compared to Strauss's best, but a nice plunge if you like warm chocolate. The recording isnt the best. Horns are far away, strings very up close, winds buried in a bit of a haze. I think I like Mehta in this musci mostly because I've never heard anybody better--and don't need to.

3 out of 5 stars One of Mehta's better enterprises from his New York years.......2005-08-24

Zubin Mehta the conductor has always reminded me of pro athletes that perform at their greatest when young, hungry and not making much money. Then, when they get that first big contract, they are suddenly mediocre, their drive reduced by instant wealth.

This is the metaphor I have for Mehta, whose outstanding youthful recordings of Mahler's "Resurrection" Symphony, Strauss's "Also Sprach Zarathustra" and "Eine Alpinesymphonie", the Tchaikovsky Symphonies 4 and 5, and Schmidt's Symphony No. 4 were never replicated after he made it to New York and began churning out mediocrity after mediocrity on CD.

While not the final word in Strauss bleeding chunks, this recording is, I believe, one of Mehta's better enterprises from his New York period. The orchestral excerpts from Richard Strauss's operas are all performed with relaxed elan, style and substance and comprise an entertaining hour of music.

No particular work stands out among the entities, which include music from "Rosenkavalier", "The Love of Danae", "Intermezzo" and the symphonic fantasy from "Die Frau ohne Schatten". There are better individual performances of each of these suites but few CDs put them together and perform them as well as here.

The 20-bit technology creates a nice sound circa 1990 that exposes the Berlin Philharmonic's texture. This is not the same orchestra that Karajan had sharpened to a razor's edge when he died a year earlier, but a more generic good that still wears well.

Nothing in this music suggests the profundity of Zarathustra and none of it scales the heights of Alpine. Still, it is enjoyable while reliably played and performed. I enjoy the occasional spin of this disc when I look for less than revelatory or profound Strauss, and I think you will too.

3 out of 5 stars The Klimt cover was the best thing; the music second..........2003-08-30

It is interesting that the Berlin Philharmonic should undertake to record the "Die Frau" Symphonic Fantasy with Mehta. The Fantasy was arranged by Strauss to help address the financial crunch he faced after the WWII defeat of Germany. Ironically enough, the Berlin Philharmonikers had been Karajan-less (due to Tod:) for about a year when they recorded this piece with Mehta. This CD proves that the BPO could reach great intepretive heights in Richard Strauss's music only under the direction of Karajan. However competent he is in other repertoire, Mehta is not a natural Straussian. The Rosenkavalier and Intermezzo extracts are well-played but lack the genial charm and warmth of other rival versions. The BPO sounds oddly mechanical and forced under such leadership!

The two brief fragments from "The Love of Danae" are the best bits of this CD - played with golden tone, (and very possibly the best too because I do not have another recording to make comparisons with!).

Strauss's music when poorly directed can sound like an amateur high-school brass band gone astray. And that is what happens in the "Die Frau" Fantasy. Towards the big climaxes, the brass go off the reins, becoming uncontrollably loud and splashy. You just need to hear the same passages played by Solti and the Vienna PO in the complete opera recording to realize how much more musical these passages can sound when played with great discipline.

An average Strauss CD then, chiefly valuable for the two rare "Danae" pieces. The 20-bit Sony mastering process is perhaps too precise for the music's own good, it sounds clinical and lacks bloom.

    4 out of 5 stars A Pizza a couple of Heinekens please..........2006-06-06

Richard Strauss the carrier of the symphonic poem baton from Liszt and the master of Wagnerian proportion orchestrations needs no further introduction. On an 1886 vacation in Italy the young Richard made musical sketches of places he visited. These later took shape as " Aus Italien" a traditional four movement symphonic fantasy, not the single movement form he was to develop in his later masterpieces. As one would expect with Strauss a colorful Italian landscape is scored. The first movement depicting the sunny Roman countryside. The second nostagically climaxes from the somber ruins to the glories of past triumphs. On the beach of Sorrento nature abounds, gentle wind, bird chirps and the rustle of waves. In the finale Luigi Denza's popular at the time "Funiculi, Funicula", which Strauss mistook for a Neopolitan folksong is interwoven with ideas from the previous three movements. Thought a minor work, everything here is characteristically Strauss, preparing us for the greatness to come.
The "Symphonic fagment" consists of excerpts from the 2nd and 3rd acts strung together by Clemens Krauss an advisor to Strauss. He never took credit for it instead paying homage, as Strauss died before hearing the complete opera " Die Lieb der Danae" performed in 1952. The subject based on King Midas and all he touched turned to gold.
Concluding the disc is the waltz sequence No.2 from "Der Rosenkavalier" derived from the 3rd act. All jolting and hopping along just as Johann Strauss would have loved.
Good NAXOS recording vintage 1990, no need to pay more as Kosler and the Slovak Philharmonic are up to the task.

5 out of 5 stars Super Richard Strauss from NAXOS- great price........2003-09-08

Far from me to be supercritical when it comes to such a terrific bargain as this. A beautifully recorded CD, well detailed sound,
will bring these lesser known works closer to the public.
"Aus Italien" (From Italy), a youthful work, has great inspiration and already shows a major talent. Listen to those tremendous opening chords: later these reappear, quite metamorphosed, in the opening of "Tod und Verklarung" (Death and
Transfiguration)a later and mature tone poem. Influences of Liszt, Mendelssohn and even Brahms are noticeable. The second movement is driven very well and the third, the wonderful Adagio, probably the best part of the work, shimmers with the reflected moonlight over the sea at Sorrento, looking forward to Mahler,
will give you solace. The raucous finale, variations on Funiculi,Funicula,is very amusing, coming from Strauss, and brings the work to a hilarious, frappant conclusion.
The second work,"Die Liebe der Danae" builds beautifully to a real Straussian climax.
The Rosencavalier 2nd Waltz sequence is my favorite. Is so good to hear it in the foreground with a full orchestra, because in the opera these waltzes fade somewhat into the background and make no great impression. Kosler plays them in a good upbeat tempo, but not too fast and still bringing out the beauty of these waltzes.
Zdenek Kosler is perhaps not known in the West, but let me remind you, he is an excellent conductor. He even worked under Leonard Bernstein in New York! He is now a Permanent conductor of
the illustrious Czech Philharmonic in Prague. Some perhaps have seen him on video conducting the Bartered Bride with great verve and gusto.
So all ye Strauss lovers, do not hesitate to by this disc at such a low price. You sure won't regret it.

    3 out of 5 stars A Curious Selection.......2000-06-18

This is an unusual recording, featuring some of Strauss's less well-known work. The most successful work on the CD is the youthful "Aus Italien" and, perhaps because of this, the interpretation is at its best in this work. The other works- the second waltz-sequence from "Der Rosenkavalier", and the symphonic fragment from "Die Liebe der Danae", are also commendably performed, if a little placidly. The recording contains much that is to be commended. There is a sombre, mysterious rendering of the opening to Aus Italien and a worthy attempt at sustaining the momentum in this slightly rambling movement. The third movement, too, is well performed, with an impressionistic sparkle, especially in the opening bars. There is a suitably nostalgic air to the waltz sequence and a very stormy beginning to the fragment from "Die Liebe der Danae". Having said that, Kosler has a tendency to err on the slow side when choosing his tempi. The waltz sequence suffers least in this respect, and Aus Italien is quite good (generally),apart from in the last movement, where the tempo and the interest lag a little. The Symphonic fragment quickly becomes mired in this sluggish tendency after its promising beginning, although some of the blame must surely be laid at the feet of Klemens Kraus for his slightly dull arrangement. In conclusion, the performance is fairly good, especially at this price, and the recorded sound is adequate. There are numerous livelier versions of the Waltz sequence, and Norman del Mar's recording of Aus Italien is also worth a look; for those who are so inclined, Klemens Krauss's version of the compelte "Die Liebe der Danae" is glorious, and a much more rewarding work than the fragment.

Indeed it is a schame that such wondrous historical recording has been neglected for so long...First we do have an awe inspiring Krauss at the helm of the VPO,in a live premiere event, and foremost Paul Schöffler(1897-1977),one of the legendary voices of the post-war Vienna ensemble,a voice that alas cannot be equalled nowadays,no matter the studio wizardry effects.
However the recording has one drawback:Orfeo failed miserably ommiting a full libretto-at the very least in german! And in fact,as far as I know the libretto is unavaliable in the whole WWW...however if you are a devoted Straussian, you will face the challenge, and believe me it's well worth.
