What she writes are signposts in that land, or lanterns which led the way home one night.

Childs creates a world where we feel anything could happen--a world that’s primordial in its understanding of humanity.

Album Description
In Parterre transformation works as an almost psychedelic fantasy. In the composition Childs juggles a kaleidoscopic assortment of musical colors that are presented as layer upon layer of energized pulsations. These colors later develop and mutate with a wonderfully rich and warm sense of expansion. Childs creates a world where we feel anything could happen—a truly universal world that's primordial in its understanding of humanity. She would like her listeners to get completely involved in the music and lose themselves. Her aim is to write music that ‘satisfies people but also which surprises them . . . not a huge surprise that shocks people, but something that is just not what they expected at all.

Kilter has the two pianists working out cooperative ventures and independent exercises: their voices may entwine like the laces of a cat's cradle; or they may line up, play off one another, part company altogether. They seem to have decided, in this democratic world of two, to allow for disagreement and embrace it. Chaotic experience isn't the dark side of order, something to be suppressed. To know order is to know and embrace its opposite. And to blur the distinction between the two.

The Capacity of Calm Endurance, a meditation on the rewards and pains of patience (the title is one of the dictionary definitions), was written for pianist Anthony de Mare. They appear to be solo pieces, but the world of Mary Ellen Childs is a little like Wonderland: solo instruments are protean, acting out many roles at once. But her ensemble work Parterre, is a unicycle—eccentric, colorful, full of surprises and an ironic sense of balance, though in the end making its way as one. A "parterre" is an ornamental, patterned garden. I can picture Alice wandering through this one, exploring both its sunny and foreboding regions. If she remembers where she is, she'll also remember that one can't exist without the other.

4 out of 5 stars A very unique musicical form.......2007-04-29

I saw "Off Kilter" at Epcot in late April 07'. First let me say that I hate bagpipes, but, when I rounded the corner and heard what I thought was a rock-fusion band with an alto sax, and then saw the band I was totally impressed. They're sound was mixed very good, and the band was well rehearsed. I video recorded about 6 tunes, the set ranged from trad. Irish, to Jazz, to old Rock & Roll and like the other reviewer, I should have picked up their CD. I even enjoyed the traditional Irish songs because of Jamie Holton's style, and the rhythm section that was really tight. I will be one of the first in line when it's released on Amazon. The only reason for 4-stars is because I reserve 5-stars for near greatness.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band.......2006-12-30

I saw Off Kilter at Epcot/Canada a few weeks ago (Dec 2006). I didn't stop for other bands - but thier music stopped me in my tracks and I settled in for the rest of the show. I am here on Amazon to buy a CD. I should have just bought one while at Epcot. I can't wait to get it.

5 out of 5 stars Long Day at EPCOT.......2006-08-15

Near the end of a long day at Disney's EPCOT park my wife and I heard the sounds of bagpipes and rock music ahead. We got there in time for Off Kilter's last number for that set. We waited and came back for the next (7:30PM) show. They are awesome, not a word I use lightly. So much joy in their music. A must see and buy.

"I was walking through Milwaukees' Irishfest '05' with wife and college aged daughter. In the background was Off Kilter rocking away like no other at the fest. Like a bug to light we wandered over. My daughter said "they are lil to wild for my tast in Irish". I bought all their cd's that night. Pure fun and truly unmatchable. Watch for them live, They are great for the whole clan. They are very collectable. More bands should follow there style. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THEM!.......2006-07-12

I saw Off Kilter in Epcot 2 summers ago, instantly fell in love with them, and bought the CD there. I was just on Amazon today to get the others and have my sister bring them along down to me when she visits (I live in Mexico). Their music is a wonderful mixture of traditional Scottish and Irish tunes with more modern beats, and even some newer songs put to a Celtic tune. I teach EFL and have used their songs in English festivals, song festivals, etc. But be careful, once you start listening, you can't stop!!

This the 8th full length offering from Three Day Stubble finds them in a new direction, ever refining their "skills" at unusual approach to music and drama. The lineup is familiar, Donald - vocals and trumpet, Mr. Hungry and Brently - guitars and effects, Lance - Bass, banjo, Shibbie Dao - beats, although missing Dave Spumoni (Cameron) who graced the last three cds with his beats and percussion silliness. Added to the mix (literally) is their soundman, Kurtsy, who gives this recording a most caring and daring treatment that earned him a position as the shining sun on the cover art. The CD also features many more instuments than mentioned in this review. This is my favorite release since the early 80's cassette tape, Friendly Park Survivors. I have every Stubble release and this one has a special place in my mind and heart. It's complete resignation from any hint of commercial success makes it a more challenging listen and possibly creates even more wide open spaces for Donald to wander in. Note to potential listeners: headphones essential for maximum enjoyment.

Off Kilter is one of a long line of terrific renditions of traditional and original Scotts-Irish music offered up by one of the very best Celtic Groups in the country. The Rogues will get your blood pumping or your eyes tearing (often at the same time). Get this CD, get Made in Texas, and definitely get their new one, Rogue Trip, and you'll burn up your CD Player in a month. They recently did a gig in D.C. as guest performers with the United States Air Force Band and the whole place rocked. These Guys are Good!

      5 out of 5 stars Yut!.......2006-07-31

I saw the Rogues at the Maryland Renn Fest in October 2001. I've always been a fan of the bagpipe, but it was so emotional when they played a medley of songs to include Amazing Grace in rememberance of the lives lost on 9/11, the crowd had hardly a dry eye. Cheers!

5 out of 5 stars Scot Rock?? OH YEAH.......2003-05-28

Now I know alot of people are going to say "Who's Off Kilter and what makes them so good?". Well it depends on whether or not you like bagpipes/scottish-canadian-irish folk songs. Being an irish/scottish (with a few others in there) american, their music just took me back a way. I was lucky enough to see them a few days ago in Orlando, Florida and they blew my mind. Their on-stage performance is fantastic and their personalities truly are apparent in their music. After seeing how good these guys actually are, I had to pikc up their albulms and am glad I did. So all you Scots and irish out there, check this stuff out! You wont be dissapointed

4 out of 5 stars Amazing Folk Performance.......2002-07-02

The Rogues have a wonderful and refreshing style. I saw them perform the first time at the Texas Renaissance Festival several years ago and I have followed their work since. This album is a classic example of their great work. I suggest any of The Rogues albums to anyone who enjoys traditional or modern scottish music.

      5 out of 5 stars Bag with a Beat.......2001-09-18

I had the wonderful priviledge of seeing The Rogues perform live at the Bristol Renaissance Faire in Wisconsin. Their music is so full of life and is so uplifting it touches you. The live performances are amazing. As soon as they did the first 5 seconds of their song on stage I immediately ran to the table and bought two cd's along with my friend. Their personallties come right thorugh their music. The beat is so intoxicating it makes you want to get right up and dance....((I have..though not with much skill)). I urge you to buy this. And if by any chance you are able to run into them anywhere and can see a performance..do!!!

            Album Description

I had heard that Folk music is considered "the people's commentary", I couldn't agree more. There is nowhere to hide in the music. It's usually personal, political and always authentic. There's a certain amount of emotional risk involved when releasing a disc. It is this type of honesty and dare I say passion that makes music matter. I have known Jeff Murray professionally for close to 10 years, and in that time I have been able to appreciate his quiet approach to making music. I enjoy his honest observations and his nimble finger work (he comes across as some sort of bastard offspring to the late John Fahey). In this day and age his work has a sense of urgency. Standpipe combines the DIY ethos of the late 70's to our new realities. To say we are living in interesting times is an understatement. Is Folk music relevant again? You bet your ass it is! Music satisfies our most primitive yearnings, and this Cd will give you some peace of mind. Enjoy…

Annie Lin wrote and recorded Truck Was Struck while enrolled fulltime as a J.D. law student in Houston. The cd is basically a song-suite that imagines a chain of events set in motion by an auto accident, as a metaphor for relationships, kinda like the movie Crash. The title of the cd comes from the concise and slightly awkward or esoteric wording of a description of a car crash in her torts class. Annie managed to tour not infrequently while completing her bar studies and then moved to New York City to further her ambitious dual careers. (She is friendly with lawyer/songstress Elizabeth Elmore of The Reputation/Sarge. Not sure if she knows David Scheltzel of Ocean Blue, another lawyer/rocker, or the lawyer dude from Austin Lounge Lizards, she just may). Annie's work can be compared to her idol Lisa Loeb, and also Dar Williams or Ani DiFranco. She often tours as a duo with hip electric cellist Henna Chou, and/or as part of the Asian-American singer-songwriter movement (cf Mike Park, Jenny Choi, Emm Gryner et al). The cd is pretty consistently listenable, is are her live shows. Not sure if she soaked up any real Texas flavor during her southern sojourn -- the one track where she tries to give voice to a local homeless person is the only misfire on the cd. I for one would kinda like to see her take a sabbatical someday in Mississippi and try to record a John Lee Hooker tribute or something bluesy. She's definitely worth keeping an eye on, so check out this cd out, y'all.
