Album Description

Dancing at the Gate is a refreshing restorative -- an hour's retreat from the sharp edges of life. It's solo piano, and "contemplative" fits it like a glove. It is gentle, and Cunningham works in small melodic fragments, frequently repeated and developed in small changes of key and dynamic, but aimless it is most definitely not. We don't really have a word for this kind of music... The pieces feel loose and improvisational, but they are hung on a framework that is remarkably firm. This, I suspect is why they remind me so much of Debussy's Images.

However, despite the fact that there is a structure here -- and even momentum, of a sort -- impatient listeners will find these songs as frustrating as trying to pick up mercury with a spoon. They shimmer like light reflected off water onto a wall. They stop, blink out, resume without moving and then trail off when the light -- I mean Ms. Cunningham's muse -- moves on.

Keith Jarrett's massive improvisations do come to mind here, but there's a somewhat eastern feel to Ms. Cunningham's compositions -- their circular progression and intense artlessness... I find contemplation of these pieces an almost guaranteed doorway to an inner peace.

That may not be your idea of what music is all about, and if it is not, I suppose the fault is mine, for I am surely describing clumsily something that is, in fact, quite graceful and, yes, quite lovely. And, while it neither plumbs the passions of a Beethoven sonata nor storms the heights of a late Schubert piano piece, Dancing at the Gate succeeds on its own terms. It is quiet music that encourages quiet contemplation. And that, these days, is priceless.

5 out of 5 stars BBETH.......2004-05-12

I love Dana's album and listen to it all the time. I knew her before she publicized her music and had a tape with some of her older music on it. Unfortunately, I lost this tape and was simply devastated. Now, I am glad to be able to listen to more of her music, and each time I listen to her new album it brings me peace and contentment. Thank you Dana!

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLY UPLIFTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-03-25

This album has been my peace and hope through some very tough times in my life. Dana in this album allows you to feel the presence of GOD and the immense love he has for you-in difficult times AND always. This album is truly in a class all its own. I can hardly wait for her next album.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful.......2003-08-16

This album is incredibly relaxing... wonderful contemplative music that moves the soul to a place of rest and thoughtfulness. I highly recommend this CD for the artistic person, the spiritual person, or simply the person looking for a place of rest in this world. It is wonderfully both inspiring AND relaxing.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have!.......2002-10-24

Dana's music is moving, contemplative, and masterfully composed! There are times when the chords and melodies seem to resonate in my chest, and definitely help me achieve a more relaxed state - her music helps me put aside the day-to-day thoughts and concerns, which is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars as good as George Winston.......2002-10-12

Inspiring magical piano. A true artist. Bravo.
Top Pick for this artist and this album. A must have!

4 out of 5 stars An Impressive Mr.President.......2001-10-20

As previous reviewer Kevin said, "Space Gate" is by far the best album from Mr.President. After several albums, this German dance group has finally done a record in which their true potential comes right through. Trust me, don't bother with the group's other albums....I really wish that I hadn't wasted the money. The "Space Gate" album is a solid work with several excellent tracks. Okay, so their voices may not be that great, but the beats are. Standout songs here are many: SPACE GATE(#2)is a pretty good effort. Bordering on bland, somehow it makes a decent track. ALL I WANNA DO(#3)is a smooth euro-dance/pop track that encompases all the sounds and attitude ot true European music. SIMBALEO(#6)is the best track on this album! It is such a cool song, everyone should hear it. I love everything from the opening notes to the rap to the final beats. They really use the euro-dance sound on this one. I really can't compare this song to any others. It is very unique and completely recommended. Another excellent track is I CAN'T GET ENOUGH(#7). This is a fun, party track - reminds me a little of that Latin boy-band No Mercy(anyone remember them??). F.B.I.(#8)is kind of a James Bond-esque dance song - really nice. CACHITO BANDITO(#10) is the Latin-flavored track that every European album seems to have to have. It is actually good, though. It is not just tacked on to the album like so many of the other novelty Latin songs are. Finally, GIVE A LITTLE LOVE(#11)ties with F.B.I. for second best song here. It is a catchy song that is pure ear-candy. The only real misstep with this album is the ABBA MEDLEY(#15). Why must they be the one billionith group to try their hand at an ABBA cover?? So not worth the effort. Despite a couple of flaws (the ballads and ABBA cover), this is the only Mr.President album worth spending money on. Highly recommended!!

4 out of 5 stars if you own one mr.president album, it should be this one.......1999-10-29

Mr.President's past 3 albums in my opinion have been really poor. Their first album 'up n' away' being the only one to have a few good tracks on it but it sounds very dated now, the follow up 'we see the same sun' was pretty much the singles releases and some other bad tracks and their previous to this 'nightclub' was terrible except 'jojo action' but 1999 see's the release of 'spacegate' and what an improvement it is. Not every track is a winner but most of them are, opens with the usual intro and the track 'spacegate' which is ok, a bit bland though next up is 'all i wanna do' a strong contender for a single i think, very pop even for mr.president. T has always had the most voal input in the past but dani gets too shine on a few tracks on this album although i always thought her voice wasn't too good.'F.B.I' is a really good party track and dani's voice really suits the song.Other stand out's are the single's 'Give A Little Love' and 'Simbaleo' plus 'looking for you','i can't get enough'and'on and on'. Mr.president is not to everybody's taste for sure but if you know them or have heard one of their song's and are looking for an album ,make it 'Spacegate'

5 out of 5 stars Cosmic Gate puts it down unlike any others.......2001-05-04

Cosmic Gate's style of house music is unrivaled; perfectly blending a hint of trance with sick house beats. All of the remixes on this single make it a worthy buy. Cosmic Gate never seems to amaze me.

    Beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars UPLIFTING TRANCE SONG.......2001-04-25

This song is amazing. The breakdown/melody change has a beat that builds up through your spine. The song takes off with one of the most unique melody changes. The Green Court remix is tight too. You also get another outstanding song with this, "Melt to the Ocean", which is on the same level as Exploratoin of Space. Well worth buying single cd for two great trance songs. Both will uplift a whole after-hours party. These two could rate up there with some of the best trance songs. Check out other songs/remixes by Green Court and Cosmic Gate. You can't go wrong. Semper Fi.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite Mr. President album.......2005-06-13

This might be surprising for some of you, but this is actually my favourite Mr. President. Don't get me wrong - I also loved the first 2 european albums "Up'n'away" and "We See The Same Sun" and the US debut album "Mr. President". I was very disappointed with "Night Club" though (check my review for it). But this "Space Gate" is just better (for me) than the others. It has a lot of great tracks. "Space Gate" is one of them. It's a very nice eurodance track with a touch of trance, but it's still remains a eurodance track. With "All I Wanna Do", Mr. President tries to make a bubblegum dance track. And they do it fine, because it is actually my personal favourite. With "Simbaleo" they do another track like "Coco Jamboo" on the self-titled album. It's maybe not as good, but it's still nice. Another great one is "Cachito Bandito". It is very latino-influenced but it is very nice. "Give A Little Love" is yet another great eurodance track. "On And On", "Looking For You", "F.B.I.", "I Can't Get Enough" are also in the same style... very nice. Unfortunately, like all the other albums, this one has also 2 ballads, "When I Fall In Love" and "Love Takes Two", which have nothing to do here. But for the rest, it's very nice stuff and I rate it 5 stars because it's my favourite Mr. President album. If you liked their other albums, you should check this one.

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite What I Was Hoping For..........2004-04-12

Let me just begin by saying that when I first heard "Coco Jamboo' on the radio, I was blown away. They lyrics weren't all that impressive, but the beat was fantastic. Granted the song was only played a few times, I knew that I had to have the album (The self titled album with the white background). The album was amazing, but it seemed like that was the end for Mr. President in the states. When I searched for them on the internet, I found the album "Night Club". Hoping that it would be as good as the first, I bought it without hesitation. However, I was completely mistaken. The songs are no where near the quality that the previous album had delivered, and the songs were very poorly done and had incredibly cheesey lyrics (I would rate it 1 out of 5 stars). But then I came across "Space Gate". I was a little nervous, but I decided to give Mr. President another chance. The sounds of the album were leaning toward their debut album, but it didn't quite take me to the same place. And the song writing is MILES ahead of that of "Night Club" but the soul and meaning just isn't there. It's like they've lost their magic... I only gave it three stars. It isn't a bad album... it's just that there is A LOT of room for improvement. If they make another album, I probably won't buy it after these two.

    So sad really...

    5 out of 5 stars great CD.......2000-08-26
