At The Movies by Andre Rieu.......2007-05-20
Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music. Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".
very beautiful.......2007-01-09
This cd is very beautiful. It captures the songs wonderfully. The orchestra does a fine job.
Refreshing Music.......2006-11-03
Andre Rieu presents wonderful songs in a very inspirational way. They are to be enjoyed as "dinner music" or just for times when the TV is off and you need some "quiet time". It is a great grouping of melodies.

Andre Rieu - Music for the masses.......2006-08-10
Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.

Shostakovich Jazz Album.......2006-01-29
An excellent rendition of Shostakovich's two jazz suites plus his Piano Concerto #1. However, I've heard Rostropovich conduct all three in person, and would welcome a recording of his, since he was a great friend of Shostakovich's. It hasn't been done, and until it is, this will suffice as a fine addition to any classical library.
Shostakovich the Jazz Guy.......2005-10-10
If Shostakovich had decided to write in the Russian folk idiom, this CD would probably be the best glimpse into that genre.
Intending to raise the level of Soviet jazz, we now have two jazz suites scored for orchestra, but featuring instruments used in a way we don't normally hear in Shostakovich. Using xylophone, twangy guitar, accordion, harmonica, and saxophones, we are treated to various "dance forms" such as waltzes, polkas, foxtrots, and marches. Shostakovich goes from the militant, to the humorous, to the sensual, each with an engaging and "catchy" Russian melody and unusual orchestration. He also orchestrates the famous "Tea for Two" into a short fantasia, which is rather whimsical.
The 1st piano concerto is a kind of odd fit on this CD in my opinion. More in the vein of what we are used to hearing from mainstream Shostakovich, he is rather melodic and often quotes from other works. The bare bones orchestration of piano, trumpet, and strings gives this work a very transparent feel. The first movement has an ominous opening theme. The slow second movement is very exciting in its own right with its sense of drama, rarely dwelling in lugubriousness, carrying the sense of dread from the first movement. The third movement is a sort of recitative to the last movement. The last movement has an unusual string mode mixture, the piano goes into a dance feel and the trumpet has some fanfare licks. Both piano and trumpet work together very well as separate soloists in this movement. He ends in a fury with piano and string poundings, the piano has some raucous quotes, and the trumpet ends with fanfares.
Overall, the performances are stellar. The jazz suites have natural Russian flair, the slow with great sumptuousness, the fast never taking itself too seriously and never careening out of control. The piano concerto doesn't fit the program in my opinion, but a very fine performance indeed. This CD is a must for any collection and an easy introduction to the lighter side of Shostakovich.
Wonderfully engaging light music from Shostakovich.......2004-12-05
Who knew Shostakovich had such a sense of humor? This disc is delightfully entertaining and sparkles a the turn-of-the century cosmopolitan sound that is simultaneously reminiscent of Milhaud, Gershwin, and Ibert. The result is something supremely different. It's certainly worth a listen or two.
Shostakovich Defies Stalin With "Jazz Music".......2004-08-26
Although he was much better known as a composer of symphonies, fifteen in all (the most of any major composer since Beethoven), many of them large and bold, Dmitri Shostakovich had moments where he could be light-hearted. Given that he worked under the watchful eyes of the Soviet Communist Party and that tyrant of Iron Curtain political correctness Joseph Stalin, this is nothing short of a miracle. This album of "jazz music", all of which was composed in the 1920s and 1930s, demonstrates Shostakovich's more "light-hearted" side.
The works featured here include the composer's First Piano Concerto (with pianist Ronald Brautigam and trumpeter Peter Masseurs), the famous Tahiti Trot, and the two Jazz Suites that Shostakovich composed in 1934 and 1938 respectively. Each of the four works gives us the knowledge that Shostakovich knew how to be wickedly subversive and humorous under severe conditions, though it is not necessarily "jazz music" the way Americans might think. There are twists in these works, as well: for example, the jaunty Foxtrot of the Jazz Suite No. 1 incorporates what sounds like a Dobro (more commonly associated with American bluegrass and country music).
The Jazz Suite No. 2, of course, contains the famous Second Waltz in the key of C Minor that director Stanley Kubrick used for his final film, the psychosexual drama EYES WIDE SHUT, in 1999. In fact, this very recording, by Riccardo Chailly and the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, is the one that Kubrick used. It has a salon feel to it, and has as much in common with Johann Strauss' classic waltz style as it does with Shostakovich's own individualistic approach to things.
Both Brautigam and Masseurs are brilliant in the Concerto, and Chailly and the Concertgebouw demonstrate the kind of orchestral brilliance that serves them as well in this lesser-known Shostakovich collection as it does in their Bruckner and Mahler sojourns. It comes highly recommended as an unusual look into how great music with humor could be created under extreme circumstances.
High spirits from a composer known for melancholy.......2004-06-26
It's too bad that Riccardo Chailly and the Concertgebouw haven't recorded more Shostakovich (perhaps because Haitink did), since this project is pretty winning. As several other reviewers have noted, however, the term "jazz" here is a bit of a misnomer. Some of the music is lighter than usual for the composer, but anyone expecting to find even as much as what Bernstein created in his "jazz moments" is likely to be a bit disappointed.
But never mind, the recording is superb. Shostakovich's "Piano Concerto No. 1," for piano, trumpet and strings, is one of his most wittily engaging works, and Ronald Brautigam (piano) and Peter Masseurs (trumpet) sound wonderful. The final movement is fairly hilarious, despite a somewhat introspective middle movement that precedes it. The second of the two "Jazz Suites" has the dark little waltz made famous by its appearance in Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut." (This is the very recording used in the film.)
As if all this weren't enough, the concert closes with the composer's hilarious take on "Tea for Two" called "Tahiti Trot." Its sparkling insouciance is a gentle reminder that despite the composer's anguish and pain, he still had wit to spare.
Terrific playing, terrific sound, and lovely cover art, too. One of Chailly's best, most imaginative recordings with this orchestra.

Brilliant collection.......2006-03-20
I've highly enjoyed this brilliant collection of Shostakovich. Recommended to every music lover!
And You Thought You Didn't Like Shostakovich!!.......2003-09-17
I'm astonished that no one has reviewed this CD (until now) which came out over a year ago. It is an astonishingly assured set of performances by the youngish cellist turned conductor, Dmitry Yablonsky, and the Russian State Orchestra. (And, even better, there is a DVD-Audio of these same performances that just came out and it is in superb surround sound. Yeehaw!)
This is Shostakovich at his most accessible. It's all jazzy, tuneful, interestingly orchestrated (he does things with the xylophone that he must have picked up from watching cartoons with music by Carl Stallings--do you suppose?). And there are some saxophone licks that couldn't have been composed by anyone but a Russian (although, the idea came to me after imagining in my mind's ear the saxophone solos in Musorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition' and the most familiar orchestration of THAT is by a Frenchman, Ravel--oh, well, the TUNE is Russian).
This is, in fact, music that Shostakovich wrote in imitation of American popular music. [In fact, 'Tahiti Trot' is his take of Vincent Youmans's 'Tea for Two.'] There's even a Sousa march in the first Jazz Suite. And he gets it all almost right and inimitably Shostakovian as well. It's right enough that American listeners will probably be fooled--if they listen to it without knowing the composer--into believingt it had to be by someone like Ferde Grofe or Gershwin or even Leroy Anderson.
My point is this: this is Shostakovich's happiest, bounciest, most accessible music. And on top of that it's beautifully written and performed. I don't know what you're waiting for.
I had my wife waltzing around the listening room just a few days ago to a new recording of waltzes by Lehar. But I grabbed her again when I'd cranked this one up and we waltzed and polka'd and even tango'd. It's impossible to resist.
Recommended heartily. And even more so, if you've got the equipment for it, I recommend the new DVD-Audio version.

Sheer delight musically and sonically.......2007-06-02
I have to admit this is the first time I've heard these delicious Shostakovich works. If you haven't, throw out what you know about his music. The Leningrad Symphony this isn't. Would you believe "Tea for Two?" Would you believe some real tongue-in-cheek, highly listenable music? If not, you should. Fun stuff here.
This is the best sounding recording I've ever heard from Naxos. Great hall ambience (in 7.1) yet never drowning in ambience and with great impact. Glad I bought it.
"Breathtaking".......2005-03-24
Amazing sonics, incredible detail and wide dynamic range encompass this SACD version of Shostakovich`s Jazz suites 1 & 2 et al.
The on the mark "imaging" (details between left and right channels) will blow you away! All the works are grand renditions but the Jazz Suite 1 and the Tahiti trot will bring tears to your eyes!
Another wonderful attribute that Naxos brings to their SACD releases is a different coloring and tint to their booklets.
Glorious!

Electrifying.......2007-02-05
Forget Superman at Six Flags. Get your thrills and chills with Shostakovich, Jansons, and the Philadelphia Orchestra today!
My general problem with most recordings of the 11th Symphony fall into two categories: sound quality and tempo. I feel extremely short-changed if people rush through this work, especially at the most transcendental moments such as the cor anglais solo in the last movement. Shostakovich? Transcendental? Well, maybe not in the spiritual sense, but the despairing wail of the solo cor anglais rises far above the melee and mayhem of the previous 55 minutes or so--utterly heartbreaking on this recording. The other issue is mostly a problem with the LSO Live engineers, who I think don't quite understand how an orchestra should sound.
Jansons has no such problems with either, although my last pet peeve, the short last note and quiet chimes, does happen in this recording, but the whole rest of it makes up for those, I think.
Not just "merely adequate," Jansons goes far above these bare minimum requirements. The brass are terrifying, the strings electric, and the solo cor anglais, as mentioned above, will make you weep, if you're in the right (wrong?) mood. The percussion have good presence most of the time, excepting the last moments in the chimes.
The biggest shock in this recording came when Jansons nearly doubles the tempo at the percussion solo in the 9 Jan. movement. This actually sounded pretty fair to me after my initial shock: sounded like real gunfire, almost. Whatever the case, I don't mind it at all.
Great, and NOT JUST for the symphony.......2006-09-26
I'm not going to try to add anything to the other reviewers on that score.
But the "filler" is also very good. If you're not familiar with this more playful side of Shostakovich, hear him kick up his heels in the Jazz Suite No. 1. Then hear a haunting waltz from Jazz Suite No. 2, something that sounds like it would have played well just before "the lights went out" in August 1914.
Masterpiece Recording!.......2005-11-23
Mariss Jansons takes the listener back in time to that bloody Sunday in 1905 in St. Petersburg!
The contrasting moods between movements and the energy are vividly present in this recording.
A reference recording for anyone wanting to get to know this amazing work. I highly recomend it.
I have listened to many recordings of the 11th, but none come anywhere close to this one! Truly a masterpiece CD!
AMAZING.......2004-09-03
Simply put, this is the best recording of this work I have ever heard. Without being shackled by Wolfgang, the Philadelphia Orchestra sounds just tremendous! The brass are simply incredible and the strings are lush and moving. I second the other guy... stop reading and buy this recording now. This equals the CSO/Bernstein recording of Shostakovich's 7th symphony!
HEART THROBBING!.......2000-06-20
Unbelievable! This recording gave me goose bumps during the entire hour of the 11th symphony. The Philadelphia Orchestra is at its best! Jansons and the orchestra truly make the listener re-live the experience of that cold morning of January 9th, 1905. How Dramatic! Words cannot describe...buy this, now! Stop reading this review and buy it! Five stars is an understatement!

Very Nice.......2006-08-12
I must say I enjoyed pretty much all of the songs on this album. "Victory" by Bond was the only thing they shouldn't have included, since it doesn't quite qualify as "classical" and wasn't what I would call a hit, anyway. True, it was instrumental, but real classical music is of a higher caliber. ("Now We Are Free" isn't quite classical either but it's not 'commercialized' like "Victory.") I really liked "Duel of the Fates," "Maria," "Now We Are Free," and "O Fortuna." Those were my favorites out of a great selection of songs. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't really care for full-blown classical.
Eh... it's okay for the young........2006-02-03
I bought this cd when it first came out, as my first real taste of anything even remotely classical. And for that purpose, it works. For someone getting into classical seriously though, I'd start somewhere else.
Almost perfect..........2005-09-17
aside from the second track (Bond-Victory) and the title track from the movie Braveheart, this is a decent classical album. The Bond-Victory selection is embarrassing commercial crap.
okay.......2002-11-08
This is a perfect album for someone who doesn't like classical music. It's almost like classical crib notes. The mix is great for dinner or party music but I was left wanting more. I'm not sure of it, but it felt like each song was shortened some how.
Almost Perfect!!!!.......2002-01-17
This album contains many of contemporary classic music's finest songs sung by many of the finest singers in the world. Bocelli, Brightman, Fleming, Watson, just to name a few. The problem here is with the opener, where the song is sung by the execrable Charlotte Church. Its a mystery to everyone I know who has heard this CD why this song is not sung by Sarah Brightman who did the original and defining version. The rendition by Church simply demonstrates her lack of vocal control and emotion. Even a cover by Renee Fleming is far superior to that of Church's. The only thing I can think of here is that since the album is put out by Sony, and Charlotte is owned by Sony, they had to find some place for her songs after paying her so much money.
If not for Church poisoning the well on track 1, this album is an absolute 5-star

Listen to the samples, these are poorly reproduced copies. Electronic music especially is extremely hard to reproduce exact "voices" for the notes.
"Dr. Strangelove, The Shining & Spartacus ~ Kubrick".......2005-03-11
One can only thank Silva Screen for releasing a Tribute album "2001: Music from the Films of Stanley Kubrick", featuring just a handful of films and scores from writer/director Stanley Kubrick......but what an impact they have made on audiences everywhere over the years...his shoes are not easy to fill in the world of film making.
Did I mention Peter Sellers manifesting his talent enough for three roles, which included a U.S. President in "DR. STRANGELOVE, OR HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING ABOUT AND LOVE THE BOMB"(1964), besides Sellers we have Sterling Hayden(crazed General) and George C. Scott(gum chewing insanity), but Slim Pickens steals the show with his wild ride on the "bomb"..."THE KILLING" (1956), "PATHS OF GLORY" (1957) and "SPARTACUS" (1960), an original true story of a gladitor(Kirk Douglas) who leads other slaves into rebellion against a powerful Rome in 73 B.C...actor and executive producer Douglas was magnificent in the film, with brilliant Kubrick directing...outstanding score by Alex North..."LOLITA" (1962), "2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY" (1968), "A CLOCKWORK ORANGE" (1971), master film maker Kubrick pulled out all the stops on this one, Malcolm McDowell(sadistic punk is funny fierce psychopath) a cult following with memorable scenes..."BARRY LYNDON" (1975), adventures of an Irish gambler whose transition from innocence into the pit of aristocracy in the 18th Century...Ryan O'Neal stars, never better in a role..."THE SHINING" (1980), we know Jack Nicholson can go off the deep end, but in this film(he's completely off the charts), can think of no other actor that can pull this off..."FULL METAL JACKET" (1987)...quite a line up from one of the industries leaders in film making, and the scores that pulled them off.
Hats off to The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Mark Ayres...Crouch End Festival Chorus, conducted by Bateman...James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reynold da Silva (executive producer)...and the many soloist Tomas Lerst on fiddle, Vaclay Skyora on tin whistle, Zbynka Solcova on celtic harp, Gareth Williams on harpsichord and Jaraslava Eliasova on piano...and a big thank you to Silva Screen for keeping all of us "film-score-buffs" in a happy mood...gotta love it!

Excellent Lesser-Known Shostakovich Fifth.......2004-08-09
This CD features a recording of Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony by Vladmir Ashkenazy and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra that should go down as one of the greats. Throughout, Ashkenazy employs the most perfect tempos imaginable, which is what makes this recording stand out above the rest. The first movement march has never sounded this well-integrated into the rest of the movement, creating an exciting and menacing effect. Ashkenazy doesn't rush through it like Bernstein did in his famous 1959 recording. The scherzo has just the right tempo, again surpassing Bernstein's rush-job. The largo is dramatic, without being overblown, like Bernstein's recording. Most satisfying, the finale comes in at just the right tempo (10:57), sounding triumphant, without removing the edge of irony behind it. The sound quality is solid, but not great for a digital recording, but this shouldn't bother most people. This recording--previously out of print--was given very high praise by Gramophone magazine (www.gramophone.co.uk) and was specifically pointed out as an antidote to Bernstein's overrated performance in their review of the latter.
The remaining short orchestral works are given stunning performances in even better digital sound, proving that Shostakovich knew how to write light, fun music as much as serious symphonies and concertos. Ultimately, this CD is worth it just for the outstanding Fifth Symphony
