"Best Harpsichord Recording".......2005-11-05
I have always loved the sound of the Harpsichord and for many years hearing poorly recorded or played Harpsichord this treasure is a must have. From the fine compositions to the good sound quality this CD is definately a keeper.
Plenty of music for a moderate price as well.
Great.......2005-08-09
This CD is very very good just what I was looking for. I highly recommend this CD if you are planning on purchasing a Harpsicord CD, this one is the best.
a must-have for harpsichord lovers.......2004-04-30
I love the sound of this most unusual instrument, the harpsichord. Especially the fast intricately melodic songs. Very enjoyable. This "Greatest Hits" includes many compositions perfectly suited to this wonderful old predecessor to the piano. There's even a little funny trivia thrown in: on the song sheet is written: Q:"what did the famous conductor Sir Thomas say that the harpsichord sounds like? A: "Like two skeletons screwing on a hot tin roof" :)

keeno.......2001-01-08
This is a fun cd. BYRD, BULL, BACH ETC come through great Scarlatti bits sound like a flock of unhappy cows running of a field of burnt popcorn but those bits generally do unless played on the African Kalimba [or thumb piano] in Africa where I need not hear them.
This is a well engineered CD. Many featuring the harpsichord demand a level of equipment beyond that of any regular person with bills, which means this disk sounds just fine on a boom box. Everybody in the family will like some part of this disk `cept for the 13 year old whose lost to punk rock or hip hop.
The Most Superb Harpsichord Sampler.......2000-07-27
I can't imagine a better sampler of harpsichord 'hits' played by one of the great stereo-era masters. A full complement of emotions is displayed here, from the most delicate and sparing texture to the most rip-roaring martial roar. If you're wondering what the harpsichord is about, or if you're already a fan and want a great sampler to play for your own delight and amusement, you cannot go wrong with this recording.

Refined Rameau.......2007-03-28
After reviewing the recent Angela Hewitt Rameau recording, a fellow reviewer brought this disc to my attention and bestowed enormous praise on it. After repeated listening, the Rameau and especially the Debussy encore leave a bit to be desired and overshadow this beautifully recorded recital, despite its many Ramellian virtues.
Before starting this review let me quote the back of this cd.
Until very recently pianists no longer dared play the French harpsichord repertoire: the pertinence of the "authentic" performances on period instruments by new artists had established their claims - and we had decided once and for all that this music was unsuited to today's pianos... Hence Alexandre Tharaud's approach is both brave and original: this young man is equally indebted to the legendary recordings of Marcelle Mayer and to current interpretations on the harpsichord.
I am sorry, but this is just ridiculous.
a) Musicology is an entirely "soft science". Actually, to use an Oscar Wildism, it has minimal ground to dispel the notion that it is little more than a collection of bad habits. Thus, it ends up being little more than a matter of public opinion. On the one hand public opinion should have no influence whatsoever on artists. They may not end up selling too much, but serve art's purpose of showing all things anew. On the other, having followed the authentic movement for thirty years and having heard the evolution from unbearably poor performances to halfway decent ones that at times approach the professional level, "authentic" should be qualified in a standard fashion as is now du riguer for "organic".
b) Many of us have access to all kind of keyboards, few to expensive and bothersome harpsichords. As such, mandating harpsichord performance would ban the great majority of players from playing and enjoying Rameau and colleagues. This would in fact censor Rameau and equate to cultural elitism.
Up to Tharaud.
Tharaud is a highly skilled pianist. He has made a very good recording of Ravel's complete piano works and a musical, though somewhat romantic and at times unstructured Bach album. His Rameau appears a labor of love involving years of study, a reassessment of the interpretation of the French baroque on the piano and a careful choice of the recording instrument.
Let's start with the discs strengths Tharaud is technically flawless and very musical. Together with the use of the piano that is in many ways superior to the harpsichord his approach results in a highly sophisticated and differentiated performances, that outdo most of his colleagues who play the nail box.
Yet there are some weaknesses. To me Tharaud has not found his own personal solution to playing harpsichord music on the piano, this in contrast to the likes of Gould, Sokolov and Hewitt. What he does here is come as close to the harpsichord as possible, only here and there deviating in right pedaled closing arpeggiated flourishes. Gould, in his video "the choice of instrument" discusses "how much of the piano to use", to me and especially in the light of the great importance of color in Rameau, Tharaud explores his instrument's possibilities too little. Unintentionally, this results in a slightly over-romantic approach, that is fortunately less distracting here than in his Bach disc.
Secondly, and far more importantly is Tharaud's underplay of the counterpoint and drama of these pieces. Counterpoint aims to increase the tension over pure melodic and melody + accompaniment approaches. To me this disc is devoid of drama. This is too bad because a combination of the strengths of this pianist and composer could lead to the Himalayan heights that the likes of Sokolov (Couperin on Live in Paris DVD) and John Williams (Couperin, Les Barricades..., The Baroque Album) have reached.
While I still consider Tharaud's Rameau still in the five star area, his Debussy was a great let down. Here, the pianist's lack of exploring the haunting dialetic between the Image's themes leads to a rather shallow affair. Compare this with the likes of Gieseking, Casadesus and last but not least Michelangeli, that are able to do so much more with this beautiful piece. In addition, the piano of choice may be appropriate for Rameau, but lacks significantly when it comes to Debussy.
In all, a strong disc with a few weaknesses.
Ravishing .......2005-12-11
Rameau is invariably enjoyable, whether on original instruments, modern forces, indeed synthesizer (let's not forget Bob James' fun, respectful and serious work), or, as in this case, M. Tharaud's piano. Like many, I came to Rameau's music as a musically formed adult, one could say "late." However, once I did, it opened windows to so many beauties, instrumental and vocal, that I regret not having its company earlier. Of course, all this happened quite a while back, though one remains thankful to the likes of William Christie, Christophe Rousset, J.E. Gardiner, etc. who have shown us so many facets of Rameau.
The same feeling of a new musical awareness being awakened in me can be ascribed to my response to this miraculous recording of two of Rameau's harpsichord suites by Alexandre Tharaud on a glorious Steinway. Listen to the opening Allemand of the Suite in A, the first track on the CD. The musical lines always stand out, on secure, inner rhythmic momentum, with embelishments truly beautifying the line, and the counterpoint colored throughout by the magic of Mr. Tharaud's touch and pedaling. This is perhaps the most sensual piano recording I own. That it sounds shaped by great intellectual rigor and intense discipline adds to the pleasure. This is a CD to which I return as if to a bottle of exquisite, rich Burgundy, afraid it will run out..... fortunately, it just keeps giving.
M. Tharaud has also successfully recorded Ravel's complete solo piano music, Milhaud, Poulenc, Schubert and now Bach. He ends the Rameau CD with Debussy's "Hommage à Rameau" which makes one wish for a recording of the Preludes not too far in the future.
Overall really good, but lacking in some areas.......2003-02-23
Tharaud's Rameau is for the most part excellent, but I felt that something was lacking. His playing in some places seemed restrained and timid to my ears. This is music that is full of rhythmic vigor, and it doesn't always come through in Tharaud's playing. His ornaments are beautiful and accurate...something that is not altogether easy to transfer from the harpsichord to the piano. I quite enjoyed his 'Gavotte and Six Doubles' (a piece I play, by the way). He does some things I've not heard in other interpretations, which were fairly interesting. If you like Rameau's keyboard music and already have the recordings of Meyer, Sokolov, Casadesus, Cziffra, etc., then this would probably be a welcome addition to your collection. If you are new to his keyboard music, you may want to listen to some of the names mentioned previously before getting this.
more please..........2002-02-20
There are frightfully few recordings of Rameau on the piano. This is one of them, and it is delightful. Mordecai Shehori also has an excellent recording of Rameau music on the piano. If you have enjoyed listening to Bach on the piano, I think you'll enjoy this flavor of Baroque music. The music can be haunting and introspective and interestingly, colors emerge that one might not have thought if you are familiar with the harpsichord incarnation of the music. If you are a pianist, it will probably give you some ideas for new repertoire.
The recording quality is good -- and I find myself easily relistening to this recording.

Rameau: Harpsichord Music (Complete), Vol. 2.......2007-05-25
1. Gilbert Rowland's playing was first-rate on Vol. 2 (as good as Vol. 1)
2. This is the best harpsichord music recording I've heard in quite awhile. (This quality level equals that of Vol. 1)
3. The price ($6/US) was a bonus! (same as Vol. 1)
I rate this five stars!
Joyful and exuberant; Delicate and sensitive delivery.......2002-12-17
This album takes the full range of the harpsichord instrument with all its embellishments. Highly complex composition with the left carrying the bass. The right carrying the melody. Alternating harmonies. All registers explored. It is hardly apparent that the harpsichord has limited dynamic range. This is due to the skill of the composer (Jean-Philippe Rameau) and the skill of the performer (Gilbert Rowland). This particular album contains the breadth and depth of Rameau's mastery of the solo instrument of the mid-1700s (Suite in A minor, Suite in G major, Pieces de Clavecin en Concerts, La Daphine), all written for the harpsichord. Add this album to your valuable collection of 18th century music.

Customer Reviews:
A "Switched-On" gem!.......2004-02-29
There was a time when I first saw this CD in a store. While I looked on back for the listing of the pieces, I read the print on the bottom that mentioned what kinds of instruments did Bob James played. One of them was the Mini-Moog. It also mentioned "Oberheim," "Roland," and "Yamaha." These names made me think they're synthesizers. I suspected this must be inspired by Wendy Carlos' interpretation of Bach. However, I didn't want to waste my money on a full priced CD. I wanted to get it on sale.
Well, one day I was at a flea market looking through CDs. In that box of compact discs was THAT particular one. I got that for about $10! When I first listened to the CD back home, it was very much what I expected. I'm not a jazz fan and I don't have to be. This particular one that Bob James did is not jazz but classical (very much like the way Wendy Carlos did on "Switched-On Bach"). The only non-synthesized instrument I heard is the piano. It blended in very well with the synthesizers. Did you know that Bob James' "Rameau" and Wendy Carlos' Switched-On albums were originally issued by CBS Masterworks? There's something in common besides performing on synthesizers.
Years later (sometime after Y2K), I wonder if amazon.com would list that particular CD. What a discovery! It is listed! But, as you may notice, it's out-of-print and it could be hard to get. In case you wanna know, I still have that CD in mint condition. I'm telling you out there reading this review, if you like the "Switched-On" albums by Wendy Carlos, you may wanna look for this out-of-print CD of Rameau's music. I think this shoud be back in print. Oh yes, also look for "The Scarlatti Dialogues!"
Tres Grand!.......2002-11-02
Bob James' first classical release is a true gem in every sense! It started as a Christmas present for family and friends, but soon expanded into its present form. The charming "Fanfarinette" starts us off. Rameau's most popular keyboard work, "Gavotte with 6 Doubles", is given an intense treatment here. Two contrasting Minuets follow. "La Livri" is given a slightly faster rendering than usual. "L'Arlequinade" is elegant and graceful. "La Timide" are two rondos pieced as one. "L'indescreet, another rondo with it's theme in thirds, ends the first half. The harmonically challenging "La Chasse" starts the second half. "La Nais de Solongne" feature Bob at the acoustic piano along with the synths. "La Soupirs" is as a gentle breeze. "Air Pour L'Esclaves Africans" is a broody piece. "Les Triolets" is soft and quiet. We close with two contrasting tambourins, the first given rubatos and accelerandos throughout. Bob uses synth percussion to great effect here. I would also recommend that the listener find Bob's 1988 recording, THE SCARLATTI DIALOGUES.
Wonderful!.......2001-06-21
This is an absolutely marvellous CD. I am a classical music lover, particularly of the baroque period and preferably with original instruments. But then I heard a snatch of this on the radio and bought it - and was immediately charmed. I'd say that it is definitely NOT for purists - the sometimes odd synthesised sounds, the swapping of the musical strands from one speaker to the other and back again, sometimes rapidly alternating, will probably be regarded by some as tasteless. However, for me, none of this takes away from the beauty of the creations of Jean-Philippe Rameau, one of the great figures of 18th. century French music, and Bob James does him both homage and justice. I simply never tire of listening to it.

Customer Reviews:
A shinning beacon in the middle of a dark night!.......2005-03-21
Nowadays many pianists think -mistakenly- that to fill a big hall, demands to produce an enormous sound amount of sound, hammering the instrument with all their mighty. That conception prevailed during the second half of the XIX Century with that advertised announce: "an authentic keyboard lion". Casadesus was so reliable about the sheerness of the sound that literally astonished the whole world with his apparent simplicity, facing such dissimilar composers as Beethoven and Ravel, and being so famous performer in both at the same time.
He was owner of an illimitable energy and prodigious generosity. From his unique fingers. Chopin's Third Ballade never sounded better. His Ravel's Concerto with Ormandy for the left hand and his Beethoven `s Fourth Piano Concerto with Van Beinum still maintain a status character between the connoseurs. His Scarlatti is played with the same dedication of a filigree builder: the exquisiteness in its major level.
His great musicianship will remain through the years, due it was born from the inner soul. That' s the divine clue of the real artist. He was not a superb French artist. His grandness is far beyond a simple nationality. The actual generation of many extremely self worried by only the technician aspect should search and take their time to listen this outstanding and supreme master.
He will never be forgotten by those who personally admired his craftsmanship and for those music lovers of the future!
The Refined Elegance of Casadesus.......2001-03-23
Dear Readers, I'm sure that this compilation of Mr Casadesus' art is a valuable treasure. Unlike some of the selections from the output of various artists in this collection, these two cd's are the epitome of Mr Casadesus' oeuvre. Every work is wonderfully realized and his masculine approach never borders on being earth bound. Especially wonderful is the Ravel Concerto which has to be heard to be believed. It is dazzling and very riveting. Suspending time is every pianist's ideal. And beautiful playing such as this does.. Strongly recommended.

Puyana y la edad de oro.......2005-11-14
Thanks to this record, I started to love de harpsichord and to know the music of the golden age of this instrument. I remember the little piece My lady's carey dump or something like that. I should be a pleasure to have it again.
Puyana Plays to Perfection.......2004-06-25
Mr Puyana has a sink-your-teeth-into style of playing upon the harpsichord which I find immensely satisfying. He doesn't pussy-foot upon the keys, he attacks them with a flair and a finesse, appearing to thoroughly enjoy himself in the process. I can readily imagine him performing many of these pieces with a smile creasing his face. And why not? These are some delightful compositions, packed with trills and runs and cadenzas and what have you. A harpsichordist's dream, I'll imagine, and a splendid introduction to this instrument for those who might be unfamiliar. The tone of the instrument is wonderful, clear and ringing. A rousing pick-me-up variety here, perfect to play for a gathering of friends, or while pottering about the house. And whilst doing so, you might discover yourself tapping your toes and smiling along! Also recommended is his disc of Fandangos and Tangos, for another bit of whirlwind musical fun.
Top-Drawer Performance, Sound Quality, Music, and Value.......2000-12-23
This is a reissue of a set of Mercury Living Presence LPs recorded in 1962. Mercury's Living Presence series was renowned for its sound quality; even though this is an ADD CD, the sound quality leaves nothing to be desired.
The first track on the CD is an anonymous piece from 1500, which, with its jumping rhythm and melody, is eerily reminiscent of some of Grieg's piano pieces and some of Tchaikovsky's ballet music, composed nearly four-hundred years later. It is the most unusual piece on a CD filled with pieces that are, if not unusual, at least, with the exception of Bach's Concerto in Dm, not well-known at all, frequently by composers who are equally obscure. All too frequently, I find that music remains little-known because it does not deserve to be known better. That is not the case here. Puyana has chosen wisely; the listener, unless he is quite a musicologist, will be hearing many of these pieces for the first time, and, I think, enjoying them immensely.
Puyana uses a firmer touch than most other harpsichordists, yet he is never heavy-handed. His rhythmic drive is strong, yet he pays attention to the nuances of the pieces.
This CD is also an exceptional value, providing nearly seventy-five minutes of great music at mid-price.
