Customer Reviews:
masters of classical music.......2007-03-26
A nice collection for the classical listener. Great variety of composers and the music quality of the cds are very good.
A good basic collection.......2006-11-10
With selections from numerous composers, it is an easy way to familiarize oneself with some of the most popular classical works and excerpts. A pleasant listen for the initiated too.
An excellent introduction to classical music.......2006-10-18
This is an excellent introduction to classical music. Well performed and presented.
Very Beautiful!!!!!1.......2006-10-05
If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.
Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22
I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...
My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.
I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!
I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!
Average customer rating:

Customer Reviews:
My experience of this CD.......2007-04-04
My hats off to this CD collection! It was worth it!!! Chopin is a true genius for the piano, on this collection.
Beautiful!.......2006-08-18
This is a beautifully played collection of Chopin's work. It was a birthday gift,
and I listen to bits of it every day. I have yet to find a favorite
CD, as each is so lovely. It is well worth the price.
Well worth the money. Wonderful! Wonderful!.......2006-06-10
I am not a classical music expert but I am an expert when it comes to a great product. I have listened to the works of rubenstein and Horowitz, but nothing is comparable to this great collection of polands favorite son. The nocturnes are dreamy and romantic. The other pieces though not as mesmerizing have plenty of depth and feeling. This is a collection that you will listen to over and over again. Although this music is great anytime, it's especially meaningful during a light rainfall. Go ahead and make this investment. It's only $100.00. For the next 100 days save a dollar and you will have it paid for. I promise you won't be sorry. Excellent! Excellent!
Best investment to make.......2006-05-21
In my opinion, this is the apex of classical music. You will not find a better CD for Chopin or any piano recordings. There may be plenty of comparable CDs, but nothing can claim to surpass this.
Although some pieces are not as good as those by other artists, Ashkenazy's interpretations of Chopin are the best I've ever heard. Add in his amazing technical performance and you've got some sublime music.
Listening to these pieces have immensely helped my own Chopin reportoire. I don't play to mimic Ashkenazy, but I use his insights and apply my own style over that and end up with something exponentially better than what I could produce on my own.
The price is something you have to seriously consider. A hundred bucks. Yeah, that's a lot of money, but that's 48 cents per song. And you'll listen to these songs dozens of times, at least, I guarantee. Plus it's a great deal... if you were to get all the Ashkenazy-Chopin CDs available on Amazon, overlapping pieces as little as possible, you'd pay $30 more and still not have everything.
This is an investment for life and will definitely remain one of my favorite CD sets for decades. Decades. A hundred bucks for decades of amazing music. This stuff is larger than today, larger than life.. music this good is something you can't afford to pass up because of temporary financial difficulties.
A great pianist interpreting the most inspired composer ever !.......2005-09-15
Lets imagine that Chopin himself has recorded his own compositions in a perfectly clear CD. I am sure that some classical music reviewers would say "This is not the way Chopin is meant to be played". These classical music "pundits" are very intolerant.
Interpretation and emotion feeling is also a matter of taste, so that the only one who can give a final answer is Franois (Frederic).
Ashkenazy is gifted with a phenomenal technique, a great pianist. So that this collection is for sure 5 stars. Enjoy it.
Ah, if you like to see piano technique in action, listen to Georgy Cziffra's interpretation of Etude op. 10 no. 4. (Search the album in my reviews.)

Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Customer Reviews:
Little attention to detail and nuance.......2007-04-01
I don't know why Argerich is so adored. Playing everything fast and loud doesn't constitute a great performance. I know the Chopin Preludes inside and out, and although Argerich has a nice intuition and a sense of passion, she pays little attention to the details and nuances that are so superb in Chopin. It seems that she was so eager to display technical mastery that the poetic sensibilities of the music are lost.
Absolutly wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-09
Is she agressive? Is she passionate? Is she out of this world? Yes, she is!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's what makes her different and unique!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wonder what are some customers trying to say when they say "Martha Argerich does not sound like Chopin". Of course she doesn't sound like Chopin, because she is creative, and most important, SHE IS NOOOT CHOPIN, SHE IS MARTHA ARGERICH.
The Preludes as a Lightning Bolt.......2005-04-17
Every pianist knows the Chopin Preludes, which stand even among his rich output as a cycle of unusually outstanding beauty, variety and mastery of chromaticism. They are played badly by so many novices, and indifferently by so many aspirants, that it is easy to make them sound stale. But Argerich's version has stood aside from all of that hubbub. It has been controversial since the beginning, with her most ardent admirers balanced by some equally militant detractors.
Is Argerich really defiling Chopin, as so many might suggest? I don't think so. Actually, I think that she succeeds brilliantly in making these pieces seem like just what they were in their time - groundbreaking.
Chopin experienced the thrill of treading into unknown waters, exploring obscure and uncharted parts of the human psyche, and bringing it all up to the surface with the utmost concision. I cannot imagine how proud Chopin must have felt to have produced such a creation from his own pen. And it is extreme music - extremely rich, extremely stark, extremely happy, extremely sad, extremely advanced, extremely conservative. To Chopin's contemporaries, they seemed to come from nowhere, like a bolt of lightning. A soundscape as blindingly intense as the F-sharp minor Prelude still seems more like the music of another planet (to borrow a comment from Arrau about Debussy). Is it not appropriate, then, for Argerich to play them with the appropriate extremes of volume, of tempo, of warmth and coolness?
Yes, I'm biased. Yes, there are some wrong notes in the B-flat minor Prelude (which certainly don't detract from the seemingly infinite power displayed) and there a few other places where newer editions, the Jan Ekier in particular, have made Chopin's intentions more clear. But the combination of burning, passionate music and burning, passionate pianist is unmatched. When it stops thrilling me, then I'll know I'm dead.
Lixo total.......2004-12-15
Imagine um Chopin onde só o virtuosismo e a "destruição" do teclado é a constante. Im agine um Chopin agressivo e desprovido quase totalmente de rubatos.Francamente, acho que Argerich não tinha a intenção de tocar Chopin.
Sound quality and performance.......2004-09-24
Other reviews here more or less sum up this performance. It is emotive and 'fiery' in its interpretation. It is really a personal matter whether you prefer this or a more laid back approach. The recording has some low level hiss.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful.......2006-05-03
Ohlsson is so technically gifted. Yet, he keeps himself under control with his really beautiful rendition of these most gentle of Chopin's work. He doesn't fool around with tempos either, as so many other pianists (Pollini et. al.) tend to do with Chopin to bring out the emotion. Ohlsson realizes that the work of Chopin is inherently emotional enough as it is, and needs no help. He just plays in a straighforward workman-like manner. As they say: "Play Mozart like Chopin, and Chopin like Mozart". That's what he does, and the effect is mesmerizing.
Having said that he plays in a straightforward manner ... what's with that little flourish in the 15th Prelude? I don't know that it's written that way, but it sounds good nevertheless.
A great record -- beautiful performances of dreamy compositions. You can't go wrong with this one.

Stunning.......2004-06-01
This has to count as the definitive recording of these works. Arrau captures both the outer gentility and the inner power of Chopin's work, and always strikes the perfect balance between the two. These recordings are phenomenal--worth the investment twenty times over.
Essential Chopin at a Price for Everyone.......2003-07-14
I have always been an admirer of Claudio Arrau and his extraordinary pianism. His were the first Beethoven sonatas I ever bought, and the quality and quantity of his overall repertoire is mind-boggling. However, his Chopin has always stood out for me, and I have long treasured his Philips recordings of the Preludes, the Ballades, and the Nocturnes. While I have my fair share of Pollini, Rubinstein, Zimerman, and Ashkenazy, Arrau to me brings an extra dimension of meditative, searching spirituality to Chopin that is utterly unique and unforgettable. To me every Chopin piece tells a story or sketches within the space of a couple of minutes a strikingly vivid image in my mind, and Arrau is so in tune with the emotional tenor of every piece he plays. And of course his technique is such that he handles all the major hurdles that pieces such as the Ballades throw in the way of pianists. While the Nocturnes, the Impromptus, and the Piano Concerti have been available on CD for a long time, the others here (the Waltzes, Scherzi, and most importantly the Ballades and Preludes)have not. I have been eagerly awaiting a release such as this, since my tapes of the Ballades and Preludes are in appalling condition, and this price just can't be beaten. Everything here was recorded in the '70s, when Arrau was still at his best, and Philips always does a superb job of remastering, so one need not worry about the sound quality. Don't forget too that there is also an early EMI recording of Arrau taking on the Etudes, which he didn't record for Philips and is worth having, although I don't think Arrau beats out Pollini's '70s DG interpretation in this department (I do however think that Arrau's Preludes and Ballades are second to none). I also have to say that I prefer Zimerman's early concerti with Giulini and the LA Philarmonic to the concerti here. Overall though, Arrau's achievement with Chopin as exhibited here is remarkable in every department, and whether you're new to Chopin or casting around for another interpretation of pieces you already know, Arrau will win you over. This release is a true bargain too. Thanks Philips!

Excellent.......2000-07-05
As with most of Ashkenazy's recordings, the BEAUTY of the music is very evident, with showmanship left on the back burner. Of course, this is very desirable but sometimes a little more bravura might be desired in some pieces. For instance: take the preludes recorded here: they do not match up to the benchmark Martha Argerich recording for Deutsche Grammophone. This is not to say that Ashkenazy's playing is poor, not at all, but it is less spirited and not as imaginative as Argerich's. However, as if to vindicate my faith in Ashkenazy's ability, the Waltzes supplied here are flawless examples of this great pianist at his best: I was first introduced to the Waltzes through the Naxos pianist Idil Biret, and since hearing Ashkenazy perform them have never gone back to that Naxos CD at all. The scherzos are truly brilliant, though I prefer the earlier recording recently released on the Decca: Legends label - they seem to be fresher and somehow more in tune to the spirit of Chopin. However, I cannot criticise this performance too much: it is a superb CD - a welcome treasure for any Ashkenazy/Chopin fan.
Another excellent performance by an excellent pianist.......2000-03-19
As usual, Ashkenazy's performance of Chopin is extremely good. His interpretation and technique are unmatched by any other pianist.

A genius of poetry.......2005-05-28
Contrary to the bitter reviewer below, I find these collected perormances by Claudio Arrau to be wonderful. His tone and poetic intrepretation are on full display; something that "music lovers" will take full note of. His Debussy is the best!! The three editions of the series are great, and I advise all readers to avoid jaded and biased reviews. i.e. below
The Sublime and The Ridiculous.......2001-11-27
This set is truly a mixed bag. The Chopin Preludes are generally unsatisfactory; at best rather boring, with little invention (although his tone shines through admirably), at worst stodgy and choked. The crowning glory of the record is his rendition of Vallee d'Obermann; the colours, tone and sense of line here are remarkable and it is perfectly organised. The Debussy is not bad - the lack of ideas is compensated for by the man's exceptional richness of tone. When one listens to the Schubert Moments Musicaux as recorded by the aged Arrau, it is difficult to see why Philips continued recording with him. The reading is staid, turgid and plodding, with dreadfully mannered phrasing and articulation. Again, his tone almost comes to the rescue, but it's fighting a lost cause; these performances are nausea inducing and worthy of mockery - they must be avoided at all costs, especially since there are thousands of other superb versions (Richter, for example). If nothing else, they will make you laugh.

Straightforward reading.......2007-01-17
Lately I've been listening to multiple recordings of the preludes again for the umteenth time in as many years. Reading these reviews of Ms. Zayas work, I was salivating to hear her. Well, the pianism is impeccable and tasteful, and she sure does have the chops, but for me, her interpretations are, dare I say, too healthy, too sunny, a little too muscular. This is why I don't care much for Rubinstein's playing. I want more darkness in spots, a bit of morbidezza. If we are on the same page, try Tzimon Barto, who brings something really personal, and in places, exquisitely tender moments; or Argerich, who is, as usual, on fire; or Pogorelich, who, while often over the top and wedded to point making, has some very interesting things to say about the music. For a more mainstream, but also more poetic approach, I like Ivan Moravec. My two cents.
A wonderful disc!.......2005-11-17
Zayas's "Andante Spianato & Grande Polonaise" is for my taste one of the best i've heard. It's performed greatly with a stunning technical and right romantic attitude. Michelangeli's 1962 version is unbelievable but this one is quite similar. I like also John Bingham's 1984 version of this not so much performed piece. In my opinion is one of the best of Chopin.
Another jewel in this recording is the Barcarolle, and it's superfluous to say that Juana Zayas plays it marvellously. Great performance also for the beautiful Préludes op.28, op.45 and op.posth. I know these pieces thanks to Nikolai Lugansky's fantastic recording for Erato/Warner (op.28) and Michelangeli's (op.45) and i believe that they are very difficult to perform well even if they are short miniatures.
A wonderful disc!
So WHO iz Juana ZAyas??? Hmmmm????.......2002-09-17
If you haven't yet heard of sensational Pianist Juana Zayas, finish reading this review, then go immediately to her internet web site: juanazayas.com. Meanwhile, even without background information, you can fast click on whatever shopping site(s) you favor to get her Chopin CD recordings. The Opus 28 (plus) preludes is the topic here. The etudes and sonatas 2-3 are also available. Have you relished the old-school, golden-age-of-pianism recordings by such luminaries as Josef Lhevinne, Ignaz Friedman, Alfred Cortot? Have you found it hard to listen to their recordings transferred from the last century's 78 rpm disc masters, without heartily lamenting the primitive aspects of sound technology at that time? Now, suddenly, ...well not so suddenly it turns out: Ms. Zayas has been living in the west for 30 years, raising her 3 sons, practising like a demon, and expanding her repertoire so that when she could eventually return to the concert stage (i.e., NOW, HERE); she would have depth and breadth of repetoire... now suddenly you can hear Chopin played by someone with heart, mind, fingers, and ... most amazing of all, an elusive quality of open, soulful simplicity. Hers is a most enduring yet special kind of Chopin: she manages to achieve the balance, the poise we associate with Artur Rubinstein's later stereo Chopin recordings, melded intimately with the her own fire and Cuban intellect. Beyond surface glitter, beyond customary wowie-zowie forms of piano mastery, we burn with her in this music, if we let ourselves. I think if you go to one of her concerts, you will notice lots of other very good pianists sitting in the audience, ears wide open, maybe even taking notes. Yes, I know you are thinking: There is no dearth of available Chopin recordings. Yes, I know you are thinking, I don't want to listen to ALL of the etudes, or ALL of the preludes. O posh, O piddle, O fiddlestix. If you have wondered what the etudes/preludes might sound like, played all together as music first and etudes or preludes second; these performances will inspire your confidence. Indeed, I wager that performances by Juana Zayas will quickly become necessary to you. So, stop reading right now, get one of these recordings and return to the sort of Chopin that really does nourish a listener's intangible, peripatetic humanity. Join the club of people who will admit to being astounded that such a lady should be alive in our times to share her unique, even atavistic genius with us. I think the shades of old Cortot, old Friedman, old Lhevinne .... many other old masters... are smiling, perhaps. Chopin himself may even be smiling. I know I am smiling because I am listening to Ms. Zayas play Chopin preludes, right now, as I write this review.
A wonderful new recording of the Preludes.......2000-01-22
This is a wonderful album. I have been a fan of Juana Zayas' playing ever since I heard a radio broadcast in the early 1980s of a scintillating, live, all-Chopin concert. My impression was confirmed by her extraordinary recording of the complete Etudes, Op.10 & 25, made in 1983, originally on LP and now available on CD. This has always been my favorite version of the Etudes. Now Juana Zayes has recorded the Preludes, and this Music & Arts CD shows that she has lost none of the incandescent virtuosity or poetic insight of her earlier playing. Such transcendent technique as exhibited here is rare, and technique put to such compelling musical ends is rarer still. I highly recommend this recording.
A very fine recording.......1999-12-02
Juana Zayas plays these gems like no one else. Not even Martha Argerich plays Chopin as well as Zayas. Both play with heart and clearly have phenomenal technique. But Zayas doesn't sound as impetuous, out of control. Argerich occasionally sounds as if she is coming apart at the seams. As regards the review of "DB" of both this disc and Zayas's Etudes, I find that sort of criticism rather cowardly, to say the least. It sounds to me like someone who harbors a grudge against the pianist and wants others to think that she doesn't play well. Of course, his criticisms are utterly baseless, as anyone who listens to Zayas could testify. What is worse, however, is that his remarks sound more like those of an immature juvenile with an axe to grind than a serious music lover. That's ok, though: all are entitled to express their opinion, no matter how foolish they sound.

Customer Reviews:
A good deal, but a little skimpy.......2001-05-25
This is a good deal for 10 cds, but there are nno complete pieces except for the Four Seasons by vivaldi, and some shorter piano works. The recording quality is a little bit less than perfect, and it doesn't have teh full vollume of other cds i have. Overall, I recomend buying it, there are some nice pieces on it.
