The cynic may question just how many Beach Boys greatest hits albums are enough. Everyone else, however, will appreciate what makes Sounds of Summer unique. This is the first single-disc collection to feature such a large cross section of hits from the group's entire career, spanning 1962's "Surfin' Safari" through 1988's "Kokomo." All 30 tracks, spanning several label changes, were Billboard Top 40 hits and are probably now as identifiable as the national anthem to anyone with radio or TV access. The fact that the tracks aren't in chronological order helps make for a fresh listening experience, as does the crisp digital sound. And yet these songs--even those that are more than four decades old--always sound strangely fresh and will likely remain so as long as there are beaches, young people, and that symbolic season of freedom and dreams. Which is to say that the title here passes the "truth in advertising" test. Perfect for those casual fans not yet ready to spring for the individual albums, Sounds of Summer is in many ways a better representation of this legendary band's art than Elvis' 30 No. 1 Hits and The Beatles 1 were of the King and the Fab Four. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars Summer music is here --- again!.......2007-06-14

These are summer classics and to hear them again is a such a joy! It brings you back to the 60's (for those of us who remember the 60's). I bet the young people of today would get a kick out of listening to a pristine version of Surfin' USA, I Get Around, and some of the other classics.

Don't Worry, Baby is a personal favorite but it's the mono version. However, listening to it on a nice set of speakers makes it sound like it's in stereo. I would have liked "Warmth of the Sun" included in this collection but hey, 30 of the best Beach Boys songs on one CD, I'm not complaining!

5 out of 5 stars The perfect Beach Boys collection for casual fans.......2007-06-14

Casual fans will find this to be the ultimate collection of the Beach Boys music as it contains all of the band's top 40 hits. 30 classic tunes from 1962 all the way to 1988 are here on a single CD with top-notch sound quality, rare photos of the band, and a nice essay inside the CD booklet. All of the early surf classics that everyone knows are presented along with lesser-known later hits that are just as worthy such as "I can hear music", "Do it Again", "Wild Honey", and "Getcha Back".

However, since this CD contains only the band's "top 40 singles", serious fans will find this collection a little less appealing since some of the Beach Boys' best music {including many good recordings after 1966} never made the top 40. Several of these songs such as "Let him run wild", "Catch a Wave", "Warmth of the Sun", and "Girls on the Beach" are not included in this otherwise excellent collection. Much of this worthy lesser-known material has just been reissued on the new highly recommended compilation "The Warmth of the Sun".

This is only a minor issue of course since "Sounds of Summer" is surely one of the most comprehensive greatest hits collections ever released by any band. ALL of the Beach Boys hit singles are here on one disc, which makes this an essential CD for every Beach Boys fan.

5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2007-06-13

If you're not one that already owns every Beach Boy record, this is one that you'll want to pick up. With 30 tracks it's a great survey of the Beach Boys from way back then up until some of there more recent stuff. If you're not familiar with the Beach Boys, you'll probably be amazed at the number of tracks on this CD that you've heard before and are familiar with, but didn't quite make the connection that all that good stuff came from the Beach Boys.

5 out of 5 stars Great Seller.......2007-06-12

Service was excellent and product in excellent condition. Would love to do business with seller again.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sounds!.......2007-06-09

For those of us who remember crusing down the highway with the radio blasting, you can't beat this CD. You just have to sing along. It's a reminder of the times when music was exciting and fun. It's simply great music.

Just a one-disc sampling of Bacharach's definitive three-CD box The Look of Love, this collection nonetheless captures some of the most essential of his writing collaborations with lyricist Hal David. Among them are a half-dozen of the greatest singles the two conjured for Dionne Warwick in the '60s; from the sorrowful "Anyone Who Had a Heart" to the bittersweet "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" and the savvy "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," they're among the best examples of postwar pop. The A-1 quality only flags on the final three lugubrious tracks. The Very Best is a mostly appealing selection, but it's hard not to feel that the title should instead appear on a full platter of Warwick classics. --Rickey Wright

Wonderful CD,every song is good, most are very good, included are great artists he worked with over the years that add to the enjoyment of this music. I would recommend it to anyone who especially enjoys the music of the 60s and 70s.

5 out of 5 stars "Best"? --- Yes!!.......2006-08-17

What a wonderful collection from one of America's true originals.. Mr. Burt Bacharach. Often imitated, but never duplicated, Mr. Bacharach's work shines as much today as when it first came out. My favorite selection is the simple and heart-breaking "Anyone Who Had A Heart" performed by the amazing Dionne Warwick. No other song can communicate heartbreak and yearning like this gem. I agree with another reviewer that a song by The Carpenters would have been nice on this collection...but no matter. These songs still stand as classics. Enjoy!

I think that this music is light, enjoyable , and a source of great pleasure. However I disagree with all the reviewers who say things like Bacharach- David are the best composers of the latter half of the twentieth century. I think the earlier greats Kern, the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Rodgers- Hart, Hammerstein, are simply much above the Bacharach- DAvid team in the quality of what they do. I also think that the Beatles and Dylan just have a dimension of depth that this team does not.
This however does not mean that their music is not a tremendous source of pleasure, especially for young people who truly like to move. I by the way think like most people that their music is best expressed in the renditions of Dionne Warwick. There are also songs of theirs that I dislike as too cutesy. One such song is 'What's New Pussycat?'
Aside from Dionne Warwick's song one piece here I think is outstanding is the Shirelles, 'Baby it's you'.

I can't believe the CD was available. It arrived quickly and in great shape.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding harmonies make this one an absolute joy to listen to.......2005-12-23

While most of the acts from the so-called "British Invasion" enjoyed success on both sides of the "pond", to the best of my knowledge Chad and Jeremy never even appeared on the charts in England. Seems very strange to me because here in America Chad and Jeremy made quite a splash in the years 1964 to 1966. As another reviewer has duly noted Chad and Jeremy produced several
hit records with "harmonies to die for".
"The Very Best of Chad and Jeremy" is yet another superb offering from the Varese Sarabande label. This beautifully remastered disc features all of their familiar hits from their stint at World Artists records as well as some of the best loved tracks from their days at Columbia. Looking for the hits? You will find them all here including "A Summer Song", "Willow Weep For Me" and "Yesterday's Gone". While these tunes are great I am partial to some of the duo's lesser known hits including their rendition of the Lennon-McCartney tune "From A Window", "What Do You Want With Me" and my all-time favorite Chad and Jeremy tune "If I Loved You" from the Rogers and Hammerstein musical "Carousel". I have never heard a better version of that tune! In 1966 Chad and Jeremy moved on to Columbia records with some very ambitious plans. They made a couple of critically acclaimed LP's which for some inexplicable reason never quite caught on with the record buying public. "The Very Best of Chad and Jeremy" offers the 3 singles released from these albums including "Distant Shores", "I Don't Want To Lose You Baby" and the beautiful "Before and After". Talk about great harmony!!! I would also recommend to you a couple of other gems including "The Truth Often Hurts The Heart" and "September In The Rain".
As usual Varese Sarabande has included a thoughtfully done 8 page booklet highlighting the career of Chad and Jeremy. Fans of 1960's pop music will certainly enjoy this one. Chad and Jeremy briefly reunited in the late 1980's to record a new LP. I actually owned a 45 from that album. Time had not diminished the great harmonies one bit. Chad and Jeremy reunited for a PBS special in 2004. Since that time that have made occasional appearances and there are even plans in the works for a new album. Chad and Jeremy are often overlooked and in my mind they are perhaps the most underated act of their day. Check out the "Very Best of Chad and Jeremy" and I bet you will agree. Highly recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars Chad and Jeremy still rock!!.......2005-04-17

I shall admit, looking at the pictures of them in that period is a shocker....they were so YOUNG!! As a wee lassie adoring the fav duo, they seemed so handsome and mature! It's great to see pre-teen idols, still come through on the talent all these years later, though maybe to a slight lesser degree to contemporary artists Peter and Gordon. It's to be noted that Peter Asher was brother to Jane Asher, McCartney's girlfriend at the time, so he wrote with John Lennon several songs for the duo. That gave them a leg up in 'polish' of the songs, as Chad & Jeremy tended to go with a lot of original material. What set Chad and Jeremy apart and made them special, was their perfect blend of voices that create such beautiful harmony.

The album has most of their biggest hits - lacking When I Was Seventeen. They used soft instruments, such as harpsichord, and 12 string guitars rather than electric rock - counter to the British Invasion sounds. It's also to be noted Chad Stuart co-wrote many of their hits, with even Jeremy Clyde writing a bit, too.

The album holds up well, is still great easy listening. The only flaw is ones of omission, not including all the hits.

5 out of 5 stars Harmonies to die for, with plenty of emotion.......2002-10-31

Ch & J were one of two nearly lookalike duos from the early part of the 60's British invasion (the other was Peter and Gordon). Actually, Chad and Jeremy were more like 'immigrants' than 'invaders', since all their considerable chart success came stateside rather than back across the pond. They had absolutely no hits in their native land.

In contrast to Peter and Gordon, Chad Stuart and Jeremy Clyde (which is how they were dubbed on their earliest American singles) at times had a bit of a folkie edge to their sound. Their three neo-folk/pop tunes ["Yesterday's Gone", "What Do You Want With Me?" and Lennon/McCartney's "From a Window"] are marvelous, bouncy little genre pieces, which hearkened back to an earlier #1 chartbuster by the Rooftop Singers, the song "Walk Right In". The song "What Do You Want with Me" was one of the very first to have its mix flavored using a harpsichord instead of the usual acoustic/electric guitar (or piano) for the rhythm parts.

Then again, the duo was most well known for a brace of beautifully arranged (usually backed by a full stringed orchestra), beautifully sung and harmonized new ballads ("A Summer Song", "Distant Shores", Before and After", "I Don't Wanna Lose You, Baby"). Their recordings of a few old standards (e.g. "Willow Weep for Me" and "If I Loved You"), just as well done, were, nevertheless, much less interesting. The songwriters for the newer material, quite frankly, outdid the older writers in their ability to showcase the duo's considerable vocal talents. This is with the exception of one gorgeous, very moving old show tune, "I Have Dreamed", which unfortunately was left out of this compilation. This omission is the only flaw in an otherwise great production.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource - We LOVE This CD!.......2007-07-16

This is a GREAT CD! Both the children and my husband and I love it. We bought it as an introduction to opera for our homeschooled children, and never guessed we'd all enjoy it so much.

All the tunes are ones you will probably recognize - but hearing the words that go with the music and hearing them in *English* is so helpful! It has been really fun to find out what these songs are really about.

My kids and I often catch ourselves singing opera through the day now, which is really neat. It has helped build their understanding of music in many different ways, and has improved my oldest daughter's voice ability as she strives to keep up with the professional singers on the CD.

The music is beautiful, the words are lovely and give meaning, and this whole CD is just exceptionally good entertainment!

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Operas.......2006-10-16

THE WORLD"S VERY BEST OPERA FOR KIDS is a collection of fourteen of the best loved arias in the world. The whole family will enjoy this CD, which is a unique version of these famous arias in that these are all sung in English so your child (and you) can appreciate and imagine the story that it illustrates. It is a wonderful introduction to opera and will have the whole family humming the memorable melodies, which are sung by some of the best of famous voices. You will be inspired to read the storylines of the operas to your children for a wonderful educational and delightful family hour. The CD includes an insert with the words so you can sing along

5 out of 5 stars A Sampler of Greatest Hits and Karaoke, Too.......2006-04-05

It really doesn't get much better than this CD. The primary benefit of the music is that it is a terrific selection of funny and touching arias from the classical genre. I am an opera lover and bought this for myself to memorize the words in English, as prompts when I listen to the pieces untranslated. I started listening to the CD while I was driving, and within a week had bought about a dozen CDs to distribute to family members and friends, with kids (and without). Everyone loves it. And at the end of the CD are several tracks of just the music, so you can sing along, which is a hoot. Your friends and colleagues, who hear you barking along to beats, will think you have taken leave of your senses. The lyrics (in English) are in the liner notes. I would suggest not reading the liner notes while driving.

Second CD benefit. The time you spend listening to this will be the equivalent of an afternoon at the beach or a walk in the mountains. The calming factor is amazing.

4 out of 5 stars World's Very Best Opera for Kids... in English.......2006-01-30

I listen to this with my 3 year old and we both enjoy it. I am not an operatic expert and to my lay ears the performances here sound great, and my daughter likes hearing the words to some of her favorite music ("Play the Torreadores again Mommy!") Its a nice break from some more traditional kids songs that we listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Great for adults too!.......2005-08-15

I never had an interest in opera until I made a trip to Italy and dined in an opera cafe. I appreciate it even more thanks to this CD. Now that I can hear the lyrics in english and read a synopsis of the story, I appreciate and enjoy opera even more.

5 out of 5 stars If you love beautiful voices..........2007-04-30

and passionate singing, you won't be disappointed. While Corelli certainly had his flaws, they are minor in the larger picture of this unique, magnificent force of nature. Then get this set for your friend who thinks Andrea Bocelli is a great tenor.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to know Corelli's art, this is the right CD.......2007-03-10

Franco Corelli had one of the powerful tenor voices of the twentieth century. Think Mario del Monaco with more beauty and grace; think Richard Tucker with a smoother voice. He had annoying touches in his singing, such as those "catches" here and there. But, with Tucker, he is, in my estimation, one of the two most powerful and attention riveting tenors in the past century. Other tenors were more artistic, provided better characterization (think Domingo, Gigli, Pavarotti, Gedda, Caruso, and some others).

But Corelli was a wonder of nature! Some samples: "Ah si, ben mio. . .Di quella pira." If there were an aria made for Corelli, this would be it. His big, rich, powerful voice fits this cut nicely. Not much subtlety here. In "Di quella pira," he hits the high notes in a stentorian manner. There are those mannerisms, but they are so easily forgiven, taking into account that rich, lustrous voice.

"Celeste Aida" is another representative cut. This is a powerful version. Also, note how he goes from forte to piano at the end of this aria. A powerful effect indeed.

Then, there are the twin arias from "Tosca." In "Recondita armonia," his rich voice is well manifest. He exhibits a smooth line in his singing. This is a powerful version of this well known aria. "E lucevan le stele" displays again that rich voice. At one point, he goes from forte to piano in a mesmerizing manner (Who'd have thought it?). His final "la vita" grabs one's attention.

Finally, "Nessun dorma." Well, smoothly, and powerfully sung. The final "vincero" is powerfully rendered, leaving goose bumps on the spine.

This is the very best of Franco Corelli. Those who want to get a sense of the vocal prowess of one of the most powerful tenors of the 20th century should attend to this double CD set.

5 out of 5 stars excellent gift.......2007-02-09

I gave it to my father and he says Its an amazing cd.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Tenor of This Century!.......2007-02-03

Franco Corelli is the greatest tenor of this century. Although there are many fine tenors including Carlo Bergonzi - no tenor comes close to singing with the pure heart and animal magnetism of Franco Corelli. Surprisingly, he was also quite comfortable with bel canto, listen to the incredible "A te o'cara". I've heard "Nessun Dorma" sung by many excellent tenors and hands down, none can touch the sublime beauty of Corelli's version. This 2cd set of his greatest arias is a wonderful gift for any opera fan. "Recondita Armonia" is my personal favorite. His thrilling vocal beauty and intensity of performance is truly unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars Ah... Franco :}.......2007-01-10

Such a pleasing voice. I can't believe the clarity and perfection. He was well before my time and others have become more 'popular' since then, but for some reason his voice seems better than the more current singers. I do not know much about opera so I will have to rely only on my own ears. I happily recommend this double album. I like to have it playing on the 5 CD changer with other opera cds, mixing through them...it is a perfect saturday morning accompaniment. enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Recording Remastered!.......2006-12-28

This CD was released approximately the same time as the four disc box set, but only in Europe. It covers the years of 1967 to 1979 with only the major hits. It's a nice greatest hits CD if you don't want to be bothered with the extraneous minor hits and album cuts of the Box Set. It was already well mixed at the first printing - but this remastered version is amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Ever-reigning Queen of Sopranos.......2007-05-28

Listening through these two discs, one thought kept leaping up to mind: will ever there be another soprano as versatile and accomplished as Lucia Popp? Died in 1994 at the early age of 54, the operatic world hadn't really mourned her enough.
People are still lingering on Maria Callas, the 'star' soprano with all her glamour and legendary life could offer.
Real listeners, however, could not give up the memory of Lucia Popp's terrific artistry and almost supernatural voice.
Her Rusalka, her Solveig, her Susanna, Zerlina, Despina in the da Ponte/Mozart trio, her terrific Queen of the Night (unsurpassed by ANY subsequent sopranos up till now), and ALSO her Pamina in the same opera. In any language you ask her to sing, and she excelled. I marvel at the Letter Scene in Eugene Onegin - only if Lucia had the chance to perform the whole opera during her short life! The joy, the expectation, the emotional tribulations, so vividly captured in girlish and pure timbre. No one will ever beat her; not even Fleming and Netrebko.
"Weird and wonderful" - that's what Elisabeth Schwarzkopf said of Lucia Popp's singing. We today would modify it to 'wonderful and unsurpassable'.
This 2-CD set is an absolute must have, even if you have never heard of Lucia Popp before.

5 out of 5 stars Lucia Popp.......2006-01-12

This is a wonderful album showcasing the very best of Lucia Popp (as the title suggests). Her voice was absolutely beautiful. She could sing the slavic languages like no one else. Her version of Dvorak's Song to the Moon is unbeatable. I dare anyone to find a better performance! Also, the song from Die Zauberflute -Ah Ich fuls (sp?) is outstanding. I've yet to hear a better version. Her diction was fantastic and while she wasn't the highest soprano around - she knew what worked for her voice. This is album is a keeper!

5 out of 5 stars Lucy: The Reigning Queen of Opera.......2004-07-12

Lucia Popp is one of the best sopranos to ever grace the operatic/classical voice stage. This CD compilation shows her progression through lyric Handel to lyric and dramatic Mozart (her Der Holle Rache from Magic Flute is unrivaled) to tender art song and operetta literature. The first disc also showcases her adeptness with 20th Century literature as well as the ability to step out of the traditional four languages of opera. Any avid music fan MUST have this CD compilation.

4 out of 5 stars A great opportunity to reconsider an artist who is largely forgotten today........2006-10-14

While his time in the national spotlight was relatively brief, one can certainly make the argument that Harry Nilsson was among the most influential singer/songwriters of the 1970's. Now more than three decades later RCA has seen fit to release a superb collection of his work.
"Everybody's Talkin': The Best of Harry Nilsson" features 14 of Nilsson finest recordings. Here you will find all 8 of his Top 40 Hits including such gems as "I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City", "Cocoanut", the #1 smash "Without You" as well as the title track of the collection "Everybody's Talkin" which many will recall was his first big hit back in the Fall of 1969. I also enjoyed hearing some of his less well known hits once again. It had been quite a while since I had heard "Me and My Arrow" and I had forgotten all about "Spaceman". What a great song! In fact, I can honestly say that I enjoyed all 14 tracks on this disc. These are the original RCA recordings you heard on the radio and the remastering job is terrific. I do have to admit that I was a little disappointed that Harry's haunting interpretation of the great 1930's standard "As Time Goes By" was not included here. Harry loved to record tunes from that period and I would have hoped that at least one of them would have been included on this disc.
At the end of the day "Everybody's Talkin': The Best of Harry Nilsson" is a solid four star offering. This is certainly a disc you can enjoy again and again. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Nilsson Talks again.......2006-06-26

Harry Nilsson came of age as a songwriter and performer during the infamous Sixties, when anything seemed possible. The advantage for songwriters was that you weren't pigeonholed into a genre, and this collection of vintage Nilsson songs shows the range of a great talent. "One" and "Without Her" are the best pop music has ever offered a too-ravenous public, and "Everybody'sTalkin'" shows Nilsson's ability to sum up the spirit of a movie in a four-minute song. The whimsical "Me and My Arrow" and "The Moonbeam Song" show off another side of this man's talent in reminding us of the rapturous delight of everyday life. He died too young, as many great talents do, and that's a shame. We need his talent and life spark in these bleak days for pop music.

3 out of 5 stars Dig a little deeper and go for Greatest Hits.......2006-06-05

For another 3 bucks (as of this writing), you get 21 songs instead of just 14.

This does have two songs not on GH--"Turn Your Radio On" and "All I Do Is Think About You." For most, these won't compensate for the loss of "1941", "Cuddly Toy", "Girlfriend", "The Puppy Song", "Living Without You", "Good Old Desk", "You're Breakin' My Heart", "Don't Forget Me", and "As Time Goes By". The earliest of these, especially "1941", show why the Beatles raved about Nilsson way back when. "You're Breakin' My Heart" is notable for its free use of the "F" word; funny, but maybe not essential. "As Time Goes By" was a minor hit from a standards album (A Touch of Schmillson in the Night) that was as uncommercial a move then as it is commercial now. Go figure.

This man was brilliant. And that's coming from someone who is not a long-time fan; I only knew his biggest hits before buying GH. Spend a little and get a lot more. You won't regret it.

3 out of 5 stars Too Much Is Missing.......2006-02-02

The opportunity for a killer single disc Bee Gees greatest hits collection has somehow been missed. Other collections focus only on the early (pre disco) period or only the disco period. "1's" misses too many great hits. Only "The Record" has everything, but it's two discs.

This could have been the elusive single disc that collects the very cream of the crop, but it isn't. I can understand one or even two omissions, but consider the songs omitted here: Holiday, I Started A Joke, Lonely Days, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, My World, Fanny, Love So Right, Love You Inside Out. That's an omission of eight of their biggest hits. Most of these were Billboard Top Tens. Instead we get "hits" that didn't crack the Billboard top 40 (except one at # 37) like World, First Of May, Don't Forget To Remember, Saved By The Bell, You Win Again, and Ordinary Lives. If those titles don't ring a bell, trust me, you won't recognize them when you play the CD either.

By replacing the major hits that were omitted with the minor (or non) hits that were included, this really would have been "The Very Best Of The Bee Gees". Since no such single disc collection exists yet, this isn't bad, there's still a lot of good stuff. But if you want all of the big hits, you're only option currently is to spring for the double disc "The Record".

3 out of 5 stars Great cover, bad price.......2004-12-10

This collection is the third of the Very Best of the Bee Gees, and the songs started from the 1969s till 1989s. All songs are greatest hits, and beloved by millions of people. If you are a collector, this is a buy right now CD, and not recommended for normal listeners. Reason1 - Too expensive Reason2 - Not extensive
Recommendation to this collection is Tales From the Brother Gibbs.

5 out of 5 stars Another Greatest Hits Album............2003-04-23

Well worth a listen. All there greatest hits are on this album. All there classic hits. I love Maurice's hit "Don't forget to Remember Me" which is a sad song to hear since Maurice's sudden untimely death. There's not one song of his that I don't like. I will always miss this sweet man. All in all you won't be disappointed if you buy this album. Happy listening.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Recording Remastered To Perfection!.......2003-02-25

This CD was released approximately the same time as the four disc box set, but only in Europe. It covers the years of 1967 to 1979 with only the major hits. It's a nice greatest hits CD if you don't want to be bothered with the extraneous minor hits and album cuts of the Box Set. It was already well mixed at the first printing - but this remastered version is amazing!

5 out of 5 stars GOOD INTRODUCTION!.......2002-08-09

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not his best work, but utterly fascinating nonetheless.......2006-05-13

Scott Walker just may be the oddest, hardest-to-peg figure in the history of rock. His career is utterly schizophrenic, split between the pop crooner of the late sixties and the avant-garde, experimentalist of the nineties and beyond. One bit of lore repeated about him is that he was a major influence on David Bowie's singing style, and it is true that Walker will frequently recall David Bowie--albeit a more vocally gifted Bowie. Comparison is also often made to Bryan Ferry and Nick Cave. There is a similar theatricality in Anthony Johnson and the Johsons. Still, whatever comparisons with other performers, there is a massive difference between Walker's earlier and later work. Someone acquainted with TILT might be horrified listening to these songs. Someone who mainly knows Walker from his sixties work could well have a cardiac arrest listening to TILT.

If you had to describe Walker to someone who had never heard him, you might say that in the sixties he was trying to sings stuff very much like what Nick Cave would be singing in the eighties and nineties, while in the nineties he was singing something that Nick Cave might be singing in 2025. At the same time, he definitely is a throw back. His love of Jacques Brel is well known, and there are few singers in the history of rock who has a voice more suited for caberet. His voice was dramatic in the way that both Tim Buckley and his son Jeff were, though he was and is more polished either (though he lacks their absolutely astonishing range). At other times he recalls Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers.

Still, there is a certain theatricality that Walker was clearly always drawn to. This is found in all of the cuts found here, whether with the Walker Brothers or in the solo cuts. I don't know if Scott Walker had a brother, but if he did he didn't perform as one of the Walker Brothers. This is just one of the host of contradictions that surrounds Walker. Just as the fact that while Walker is American, he has never enjoyed much success here, but was a huge success in Britain. This collection contains many of the Walker Brothers biggest sixties hits. There is a big difference between this collection and the much better BOY CHILD: THE BEST OF SCOTT WALKER 1967-70. The latter emphasized Walker's original compositions and demonstrate his marvelous if quirky gifts as a songwriter. This collection features comparatively few of his own compositions, but instead primarily songs by others he performed, such as Burt Bacharach and Jacques Brel.

If these songs don't reveal Walker's gifts as a song writer, they do put his voice on fine display. Some of these songs I could have donen without. Is this really made a better album by his doing "The Impossible Dream?" On the other hand, his version of Jacque Brel's "If You Go Away" is as lovely as anyone's. The biggest hits on the CD are unquestionably "Make It Easy On Yourself" and "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore." But those are hardly the only great cuts on the disc. Not everything is a gem, but there is still more than enough to justify the cost of the album.

I would, however, urge a prospective listener to try the BOY CHILD anthology before this one. This one has the hits, but I think BOY CHILD collects more interesting music. The truly adventurous should try TILT, which is easily one of the bleakest albums ever recorded.
