Editorial Reviews
Stephen D. Hicken, American Record Guide
"...[these pieces] have in common an attractive underlying serenity, which Svard sensitively communicates without compromising the individuality of the pieces. In addition to Svard's excellent performances, the sound and notes make this an important release for fans of the piano and the inspiration it still gives composers."
Robert Carl, Fanfare
"Both on the basis of adventurous music-making, and for the stunning debut of Gann's sonata, this disc is highly recommended."
Album Description
Other Places is an exploration of Svard's interest in new concepts and ideas in music. The three works on Other Places share the ability to expand the performer's and listener's musical parameters in unique ways. Elodie Lauten's Variations on the Orange Cycle is a richly-textured combination of transcribed improvisation and intentional notation that creates lush, ever-changing tapestries of sound. Jerry Hunt's Trapani (stream) is a contemplative work exploring different facets of sound through a progression of tremolo chords played with a variety of voicings, dynamics and pedalings. Trapani's slowly-changing harmonies are serene in their simplicity, yet mesmerizing in their unfolding. Kyle Gann's Desert Sonata is based on his unique rhythmic language developed from the multi-tempo structures of Conlon Nancarrow and the dances of the Hopi, Zuni and other Pueblo Indians. Gann's juxtaposition of widely divergent musical ideas creates an atmosphere that is both compelling and enchanting.

the most beautiful music in the universe.......2007-06-15
I just listened to this CD a few times the last couple of
days and I think it is the most beautiful music in the universe,
not to forget Marie's voice.
Been listening to this CD since 1992 gets more beautiful with age.
Great CD!.......2007-01-04
I honestly never listened to this CD, but with the way my girlfriend listens to this cd nonstop it must be good
A must for all Roxette fans.......2006-08-19
This one is true blue Roxette albums with their signature style all over it. Calling them classic pop of the 90s would be unfair since their songs are timeless! The live songs are the ones to watch for. It makes you feel as though you were there with them on the stage. All in all a fantastic album and a must have for all Roxette fans!!!!
A true Joyride.......2005-08-31
I hear the songs and they take me back to the early 90's. excelent music
Great all round.......2005-07-13
Like any good album this one really grows on you and it has become one of my all time favourites out of any group. Initially I didn;t like the live versions so much but after awhile they grew on me too. But I particularly love the other songs on this album which I think could have been released as singles and should be listened to by anyone. To me the album has a more folky countryish flavour to it than other Roxette albums but I like that aspect to it. It is a nice mellow album good for listening to on the road. I love the mooing cows on Fingertips, the helicopters on Queen of Rain. I love the nostalgic schoolkid feeling and imagery of Cinnamon Street, and the melancholic melodies of Never Is a Long Time and So Far Away. I love the one two three four, the riff and the Samsonite suitcase of Here Comes the Weekend, the great duo sound of Silver Blue and the quirky edgier lyrics of Keep me Waiting. And I like it when Per sings about the rising sun in Come Back Before You Leave.
Let it grow on you too. A must have

Customer Reviews:
This is what the night sounds like.......1998-08-14
With 'Other Places,' Kenny Barron has given us a record which documents the sounds of solitude, of the night, and of life's mystery. The title track may very well be a masterpiece - - not since 'Blue in Green' has there been a moody reverie-maker like this one. If you're looking for some really smart, quietly simmering tone poems, you've come to the right place. The tracks on the disc hold together like a suite, though they are separately titled and seem intended as discrete entries. I should admit that this is one of my favorite records of the last ten years. The recording is superb, and the playing top-notch, but it's the quality of the songs and Barron's masterful arrangements which put this disc in the realm of the classics. Most have a minor-key tonality, and several are deliberate, but all share a simmering fire which bursts into swing in various places. Make no mistake, there's not much raucous swinging here, and even less indiscrete or gratuitous blowing. This one has no place in your changer at a party, but couldn't be better for a moment of quiet solitude. - - George McCoy

The Best of Many Fine Albums.......2005-11-04
Gary Burton was an early favorite of mine, starting with his controversial --sometimes brilliant, other times flat-- Nashville-jazz cross, Tennessee Firebird. (Listen to the title cut on the album, which features what amounts to a non-stop blistering drum solo by Roy Haynes behind the excellent solos of sax player Steve Marcus and Burton on vibes.)
Duster appeared soon after. It was an uneven album but with exceptional solos by Burton and guitarist Larry Coryell who (in my opinion) never played as brilliantly thereafter, even on Spaces, a fine duet album with John McLaughlin. Duster was the first of several albums showing Burton's unusual rapport with guitarists.
A string of good ones played with him --Coryell, Jerry Hahn, Mick Goodrick, Pat Metheny. Hahn probably received the least notice: he withdrew from straight ahead jazz just when he'd begun to attract notice for his work with Burton and John Handy.
Country Roads is a true ensemble album. Four first class musicians --Burton, Hahn, Steve Swallow (on acoustic as well as electric bass) and Roy Haynes-- play up a storm. The songs incorporate respect for the forms of country music (listen especially to Burton's and Hahn's exchanges on Wichita Breakdown) along with more straight ahead jazz.
My favorite is Green Mountains. Musically, the piece is bright and pulsing, Haynes and Swallow's rock solid rhythm provides a pulsing background to excellent solos by Burton and Hahn. But I have my own reason to love this album and this cut: thirty-five years ago I bought this album, newly released, on the day our son was born. Whenever I hear "Green Mountains," with its sunny melody and sprung rhythms, it conjures up images of our son as a very young child.
I love this album!

On Par with DUSTER.......2001-11-27
I'm not sure why this isn't as celebrated or popular as DUSTER. This '69 date came just two years later with essentially the same band; only Larry Coryell was replaced by Jerry Hahn, who added more of a country & western influence into the music. Not that Hahn turned the group into a heavy country-fusion outfit. The quartet still retains its own unique kind of chamber jazz sound; the influences of contemporary rock and country music are more subtle than some critics and historians like to suggest.
The group interaction on this date is as intuitive as ever before. If you like DUSTER and FAKE ANAGRAM, be sure to pick this up as well. For a few choice samples, try the Ravel Prelude, "Green Mountains," or "Wichita Breakdown."

Customer Reviews:
My first great listening experience of the new year.......2005-01-08
Eyvind Kang and Tucker Martine have known each other for quite a while. In light of the spectacular music they make on this remarkable disc, the only question is this: Why did it take them so long to record together?
Kang, long a member of Bill Frisell's quartet, has a unique approach to his primary instrument, the violin. Not only does he get an astounding variety of sounds from it, he also has a knack for playing it in a faux-naive way that humanizes its sometimes harsh timbre and imbues it with a warmth and eerie beauty uniquely his. With a handful of outrageous solo discs to his credit, including such weirdness as The Sweetness of Sickness and Theater of Mineral NADEs, he has carved out a niche in contemporary improvised music completely his own.
Tucker Martine, long associated with Wayne Horvitz (see esp. their latest, Mylab), but also the production genius behind artists like Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter, Laura Veirs, Down Pilot, and Sanford Arms, as well as heading up the sound collage project Mount Analog, is fast becoming one of the most in-demand sound-sculptors working in the biz today.
Together they've created one of the most beguiling, intriguing, and just plain weird discs out there. Ranging in styles as diverse as demented pop to outré electronica--and nearly everything in between--Orchestra Dim Bridges presents a constantly shifting soundscape of staggering diversity. Yet, strangely, several unifying threads unite these disparate materials: the lads' propensity for purely gorgeous melodies, a wacky world-percussive sensibility, dreamy, ocean floor/blasted heath moods, and the seamless assimilation and appropriation of the wildest assortment of world musics conceivable.
Anyone taken with some of Frisell's latest projects, Mylab, Dhafer Youssef, Critters Buggin, and Garage a Trois should waste no time in picking this up. Others with big ears will also want to give a listen.
Highest recommendation.

Customer Reviews:
great projections into known and unknown realms.......2001-07-31
Elodie Lauten's music is based on the time honored tradition of improvisation, and here the choice of materials, a scale, Mixolydian G,B,C,D,F, actually a chord, depending how one perceives it, this is quite powerful and seemingly endless in the sheer amount of variation one , a pianist or composer or whomever can summon, and coax out of it. Within the confines of Americana it has been widely used, old Terry Riley's 'A Rainbow in Curved Air" and currently from quite a different market concocted perspective John Adams in his 'Lollapolooza'for orchestra, gives this tarnished durable scale a run for its money. Lauten gave Svard a tape of her improvisations, in which she produced the score to perform from. The results are kinda mixed. You sense the rhythmic freedom of improvisation here and also the situation that some moments in the music are bridges, filler moments waiting to see what's around the corner. The frame of variations should have gone through more paces, unless the work is open ended where any performance is simply one realization of a countless number, like entering a labyrinth of expression. That's the price you pay in improvisation. Theodor Adorno said we all pay some price in art, no matter what level of experimentation.Hopefully these 'filler' moments sink into the welter, the beauty of what this chord can summon, or scale can produce. In quite a different context, I've heard this chord as wind chimes-like slowly being caressed with a gentle breeze. La Monte Young's "Well Tuned Piano" an hours( 8 or 9 hour) long work for the piano pummeled through the strictures of 'just intonation', the real way we should be hearing anyway, also has similar like utilizations. 'Phase 1' is the most spirited, uplifting, and clean, later Lauten introduces chromatic intervals, minor timbre, then dance like gestures. But it didn't seem to amount to much after the initial beauty first hits you, much was arbitrary. Perhaps I should hear a live performance.
Jerry Hunt has the pianist here use wrist bells with tremoli, that's where your hand goes, reiterates back 'n forth between either two tones,or three or more, depending on one's strength,or each hand alternating as fast as possible, like beating a drum.Great sheets of sound can be produced this way, which is what happens hear. Hunt has worked in theatre, so the effect is quite spellbinding. Gann's 'Desert Sonata' is a real tour de force. He's been working with the imagery and rituals, the culture of Native American Indians and their music for quite some time. Part Indian himself the work framed in two large movements about ten minutes each, has a dialogue between primitive, primordial like gestures, and for want of a better description "civilized" music, music unfolding itself into patterns as dances.Gann utilizes like a passacaglia from Conlon Nancarrow, from his 'Studies for Player Piano'. So the section here is in 41/16 time.Time seems to be what kills everyone here, for Gann I had wished he would have allowed his quite evocative opening to drift a little longer to summon even more the power of his image of the Desert. The first 'Wind', utilized the mysterious powerful timbre of the lower piano depths, with gentle, delicate interruptions in the tickly upper registers, like some percussion instrument introduced. Erasing the middle register, using not much of it here is great, so we clearly hear the beauty of the bass, making it work its own magical charms. Then also a melody is heard 'Going Home' from a Hopi Elk Dance. It is quite evocative, with these rhythmic punctuations. Gann knows the mysteries of piano timbre quite well, I hear Busoni hovering some place here, more than the apparent frame of Beethoven's Opus 111; pleased with the pure simplicity of the piano timbre and its projection. But Gann has his own voice here.'Night' is simply denser music less expansive, more utilizing rhythmic focus of the Hopi dance again only buried within the texture of things, the lines. Svard, is quite a sensitive player to all this new expressions,or ones where there's not much precedent.
