These are delightful compositions, reminiscent of early English MIracle plays in content. The music is straightforward and the entire effect is disingenuously charming. These would be a good background for or introduction to Italian Cantatas and Opera.

    World class musicians performing masterpieces. So many sampler CDs offer mediocre performers, but the musicians here are the cream of the crop. The choice of composers is also inspired. This is a great way to test the waters on choral music and find favorites without having to break the bank. One of my all time favorite CDs.

        "Voyage Of Dreams", produced by Jephté Guillaume, provides a delicate balance between modern rhythms & expressions with the traditional ancestral elements of Jephté's Afro-Hatian-Latin heritage. A musical ambassador for the spiritual messages of both the Haitian revolution-reconstruction & the New York diaspora of today, Jephté embodies in his music the body & soul of Haiti - his songs, all sung in Haitian Kreyol, often take the form of incantations to a superior being (The Prayer) & renew the ancient beliefs of Vodou. This album is a concept album in its theme & structure, awashed in images of displacement, travel & the search for unity and spiritual fufillment. Jephté's songs offer prayers, ask for spiritual guidance from the elders, challenge the madness of oppression & misery, and offer the hope embodied in images of home, family, country & liberation. But anchoring almost all of this is the persistant beat - the groove - to inspire dance. The most powerful influence of Vodou on Jephté's music is the realization that the most profound questions & the most soul-wrenching quests need not be divorced from the joy of dancing.             With so many great recordings of early Baroque music available now, this one seems less interesting in a number of ways.

            The size of the chorus seems awkward, too small for a beautiful blending, too large for individual voices to be heard. Further, occasional imprecisions are heard with ending consonants (for an example, listen to the opening phrases of track 18). The often florid solo lines reveal an uneven approach: sometimes so non-legato as suggest an "H" before each running note, and sometimes connected by an uncharacteristic portamento. These variations might be acceptable for specific expressive effects, but I did not observe that this was the case.

            Vibrato is not used consistently. It is sometimes used as an ornament and other times seems uncontrolled. Overall, the expression seems anachronistic. Rather extreme changes in dynamics, forte-pianos, and swift crescendos seem to set the interpretation perhaps a hundred years after c. 1650 origin of the works.

            These performances would have been acceptable 30 years ago, but they do not exemplify our current understanding of best performance practices for early Baroque music.
