This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Fantastic.......2006-06-30
First of all anything with Sir Solti's name on is worth purchasing. Solti has such a way with interpreting music! If you like overtures this CD is for you. It has the best overtures here in one collection. With orchestras like chicago, london, and the vienna you cannot argue with the performances. There are a few "weaker" ensembles, but when compared with the other ensembles there are few that will not sound weak. Again any work Solti has done is worth purchasing!

Did not like the way these musical pieces were "interpretted".
Did not like the tempo and in one piece one of the instruments played a portion which I would say they played a flat instead of a natural note. This is based on hearing the same pieces played by someone else, it's just my opinion.
Spectacular.......2003-09-25
Not only does it include some of the most famous overtures, but they are played in such an exciting style, full of life and passion. The Suppe overtures are superior and the Wagner overtures are wonderful as well. There is not a bad point to this recording - highly recommended!

This is an excellent collection of overtures, especially of Von Suppe's overtures. Solti truly brings out life in these pieces.
The best Overture Album !.......2000-02-28
If you like overtures, here is the album. Never have these been performed so musically and with such excitement. The orchestras involved vary in their abilities, yet the Chicago, Vienna, and London Symphony perfom with style. Solti loves this music and it shows.

Favorite Soprano: Gorgeous Dramatic Voice.......2006-11-05
The first time I ever heard Jessye Norman sing was a recording of Dich Teure Halle from Wagner's Tannhauser, and I was immediately enchanted. She has a gorgeous ringing tone and powerful voice. However, she can also bring her voice to a delicate sweetness that other dramatic sopranos find difficult. This album is put together particularly well. I love her Carmen and Isolde here, but I cannot stop listening to the other songs either, the non-operatic ones included. This my favorite CD, and I would definitely reccomend it to anyone considering the purchase.

A MUST HAVE..........2006-02-09
The American soprano Jessye Norman was born in Augusta, Georgia (the segregated South) on September 15, 1945 in a family of amateur musicians; her mother a pianist, her father a singer in a local choir.
Norman received a scholarship to Howard University (a historically black university in Washington, D.C.) -NOT INDIANA-, graduating in 1967 with a degree in music. The following year, she won the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. She made her operatic debut in 1969 as Elisabeth in Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser at the Berlin State Opera, and in subsequent years performed with various German and Italian opera companies. She returned to the US to make her professional concert debut at Lincoln Center in 1973.
Amazing Voice.......2005-07-06
Jessye Norman has possibly the greatest voice I have ever heard. Being a bass/baritone, I usually shy away from higher voices (especially tenors), but I find this soprano to be flooring. For being a classicaly trained vocalist (she attended Indiana University) Ms. Norman has an incredibly versatile voice. In this album alone, she sings broad French arias, light Mozart, spirituals, and Broadway. Each is done superbly. Out of every track, her rendition of "Ave Maria" is my favorite. She sings it so tenderly and intimately, it is like she is singing it directly in front of you. You will be moved, certainly.
I suggest this CD to everyone, a fan of classical music or not. It is important for everyone to have these songs to relax, calm down, or to just listen to. You would not regret it.

Great variety of classical wedding music, great for Prelude........1999-04-18
This is a great album. It really helped me plan the music that I wanted played at my wedding. It has a great varitey of classical wedding music. It gives you many ideas for your Prelude, Processional and Interlude. It has good sound quality from the original artists. And it's great to listen to after the wedding to relive the memories of that day.

Wilhelm Furtwaengler was a poet of the baton, more interested in emotional communication than in the precise discipline favored today. He was likely to make each performance of a work sound different from the last, a quality hard to capture on records, which tend to go on doing the same things in the same way every time you play them. Still, the personality of the conductor comes through in some of his old recordings recently remastered on CD.
The Koch Legacy series has issued a thorough survey of Furtwangler's early recordings with the Berlin Philharmonic, from 1926 to 1937, in two volumes of two CDs each. The first (3-7059-2) has music of Bach (Brandenburg Concerto No. 3), Mozart ("Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" and overtures), Schubert ("Rosamunde"), Beethoven ("Egmont" Overture and Symphony No. 5) and Rossini ("Gazza Ladra" and "Barber of Seville" overtures). The second (3-7073-2) includes theatrical music of Weber, Mendelssohn, Berlioz, Wagner and Johann Strauss Jr., as well as a superb performance of "Till Eulenspiegel" by the other Strauss. There is a special interest in comparing his fine 1926 recording of the "Freischutz" Overture (in the first set) with the more evocative 1935 recording in the second set. These interpretations cannot be called better or worse than their abundant and excellent competition; they are one-of-a-kind and to be treasured for that reason.

An EMI house conductor with a devoted cult following.......2005-11-22
Sometimes one feels that the Great Conductors series is just a convenient way for EMI to push recordings that otherwise wouldn't sell. I don't think there's much market for these performances from the Polish-born, Swiss-naturalized Paul Kletzki. When he died in 1973 Kletzki had had a strong career as a perennial guest condcutor around Europe--he appears on these two CDs with five different orchestras from London to Prague. Kletzki made lots of records for EMI, but none that I've heard really rose to any level of inspiration.
In fact, I would rate this set as one of the poorer compilations in the whole series. The big works here are a live Tchaikovsky Fifth with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra (stereo, 1967) and a less well recorded Brahms Fourth with the Czech Phil. (stereo, 1965). Neither strikes me as anything but ordinary, or worth salvaging, really, despite their honest, sober ways. Neither orchestra sounds at its best. Nor are the minor works, such as a cautious Benevenuto Cellini Over. and a decent enough Mendelssohn Calm Sea and Happy Voyage Over., anything notable.
The happiest item is the Capriccio Italien that wraps up CD 2, a 1958 studio recording with the Philharmonia. It is fresh and lively, without a trace of bombast or fakery. I liked it better than anything else here, but one bright performance can't save the dullness of the rest. Overall, this is a perfect set to keep around in case somebody claims that Kletzki was great just becasue his records are out of print.
Great Conductors of 20th Century= Best Reissues of the 21st.......2003-03-29
It's sad that the "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" reissue series has not gotten more notice on Amazon and in other places, because it has my vote for the best reissue program thus far of the 21st Century. Drawing from the archives of all the major classical labels (EMI, Sony, BMG, DG, Decca, Philips, Supraphon, etc.), EMI and IMG Artists have assembled a wonderful series of affordable two-disc sets by the leading conductors of the last century. And unlike its counterpart, "The Great Pianists of the 20th Century," which are basically compilations of material already available on other CDs, the "Great Conductors" features rare and, for the most part, previously unreleased performances!
This particular CD, Volume 20, features the great Paul Kletzki, a conductor who is woefully underrepresented on CD at the present time. (His wonderful recordings of Sibelius, Prokofiev, Beethoven, and others are currently unavailable -- in fact the only decent recordings of his that are in print is the Chopin Piano Concerto with Pollini, and only a couple of Mahler discs!) As the track information is not abundantly clear above, allow me to mention that these two discs feature memorable stereo performances of Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony and Capriccio Italien, Brahms' 4th Symphony, 3 of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances, an excerpt from Schubert's ballet "Rosamunde," and a Wagner song. There are also two mono performances from the early 50s --Berlioz's "Benvenuto Cellini" Overture and Mendelssohn's "Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage" Overture. Kletzki, who was probably best associated with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Czech Philharmonic, also performs here with Bavarian RSO, Royal Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic, and Orchestre National de la Radiodiffusion Francaise.
Whether you are a serious collector of classical music or a beginner, the "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" has something for everyone. If the prized, rare performances previously unreleased on CD (or ever!) doesn't excite you, then use this as an opportunity to check out one of the greatest conductors ever recorded. Chances are, since stores are offering increasingly homogenized classical music sections, this conductor isn't even in your collection. And that would truly be a shame.

It was unthinkable when I was young that anyone but Toscanini could be synonymous with "maestro," but evolving technology and changing tastes have dimmed his supreme reputation. The rise of Bernstein and Karajan brought new glamur to the podium, and the resurrection of Furtwangler from post-Nazi neglect gave us a musician whose inspiration exceeded Toscanini's. Now, even though the bulk of his recordings are still available, Toscanini stands in the front rank of great historical figures rather than among those whose musicmaking sitll feels fully alive (this is only a gneralization; there are some Toscanini performances that will thrill listeners forever).
This installment in the Great Conductors of the Century series does Toscanini full justice, I think. We hear the passion and razor-sharp precision that so astonished early audiences, but also the tendency to be too strict with the beat, too heated and rushed in phrasing. The highlight of this 2-CD colleciton is a live 1948 Brahms Fourth that collectors consider to be first choice among Toscanini's NBC peformances. I am not a collector, but this reading, despite the expected cramaped, boxy mono sound, is flexible, precise, and clean. Toscanini's Brahms was never musty, and since he actually played for the composer, one feels a strong continuity with the past.
The big work on CD 2 is a familiar Beethhoven Pastorale with the BBC Sym., less hard-driving than his NBC remake but in antique sound, especially annoying since the first oboe is front and center, drowning out half the orchestra. The 1941 Immolation scene with Helen Traubel has good radio sound for its day, with the soloist placed close to the mike. She is stalwart and secure, and Toscanini accompanies with his customary intensity and refusal to revere Wagner. The Francs-Juges Over. is given another alert, lithe performance that shows off Toscanini's approach to Berlioz, rather in the vein of Rossini. Despite the complaints of the reviewer below, these are good-enough transfers, but they fall short of RCA's almost miraculous remastering in their latest Toscanini the Immortal series.
Great conducting; Poor Processing.......2004-08-16
Despite the quality of most of the other sets in this laudable EMI series, this one is disappointing. The pieces are well chosen, but it sounds as though EMI were not able to find good sources for these rarities. The sound is certainly better somewhere else, so we have to listen through the poor recordings to hear Il Maestro. Still worth owning, but they could have done much better with this one.
