Great music, low quality recordings.......2007-04-17

As a DJ of 20 years I was happy to find such a great quantity of extended mixes on one disc. Unfortunately the copy I purchased seemed lacking in sound quality to the point that I could not use it in a professional setting. Although for personal use what a great collection

Disco Nights is a pretty good series, but it always promises Extended Club Play Versions on front, and that's not always the case. You sometimes get 7" versions--and sometimes they even EDIT the 12" versions, which is a shame, because there are a good number of long versions on each volume. This volume gives you:

5 PLUS******STARS! SO MANY GREAT CUTS!.......2005-04-21

I agree with another reviewer that this is probably the creme-de-la-creme of this series. Contains killer dance cuts like Evelyn "Champagne" King's "Shame," one of the absolute hottest 70's dance tracks, if not the all-time greatest. Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," also ranks as one of the very best, and is incredibly moving. Vicky-Sue Robinson's original "Turn The Beat Around," is also one of the all-time high points of 70's dance music. And, great dance classics like Donna Summer's "Last Dance," Alicia Bridges' "I Love The Night Life (Disco Round)," and Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell," are included here, also in their full-length glory. What fun! The remaining tracks are just fine, with absolutely no clunkers. GRAB THIS ONE!

Ah, disco. A music which saw women take center stage on many occasions. I love to put on this collection when I'm biking, it gives me energy to workout and I can sing along. The variety is pretty good, in fact, some of the selections are rather horrible but we can't like everything. This was the second of this series that I purchased and I'm very glad I did. Think I'll go bike and sing "I Will Survive" right now.

Dance Dance Dance the whole time! Great CD!.......2002-09-25

Personally, I feel that this is the best of the Disco Night collection. The best disco artists are on this CD with Donna Summer singing 2 songs. A great start for any disco beginner.

You can't help but toe tap through the entire album. The CD appropriately ends with Donna Summer singing "Last Dance." brings back memories of those last days of disco, eh? Closin' out the place!

I have performed many of these hits on stage and I must say that some of the song choices that some people picked were sad, but that's what makes the world go round and tha's only my opion.
When Heaven Must Be Missin an Angel, or Disco Nights, or Native New Yorker played the entire floor was crowded, when Shake your Grove Thang came on in between sets there wasn't hardly anyone on the floor. ONE MUST GROOVE TO MOVE!!!!!! I can no longer dance but I still groove!!! Holla if ya feel me! PEACE!!!

GREAT SERIES! GREAT COLLECTION!.......2005-04-21

I am a big fan of 70's dance music, a/k/a "disco."
For those of us who love to dance, having contemporary music that was custom-tailored to that activity was something extraordinary and wonderful.

What I really appreciate about this series is that, whenever possible, you're getting the extended versions of the songs, or at least the full-length album cut. [For the record, I have never been able to find an extended version of "Boogie Oogie Oogie" and "Rock The Boat," and believe they simply don't exist. There may be one or two others on this set that weren't available in extended version.]

[I'm betting that some of the reviewers who gave this cd poor marks never purchased--or even listened to--this set, but are from the "disco sucks" clique, and just wanted to make their point. It's OK if you don't care for "disco," but... Folks, you can't fault this record company, as it clearly--in large letters--states that this is DISCO on the cover. You'd be a knucklehead for buying one of these cds if you hate disco.]

Also, this is not watered-down, or overly-pop disco, like what was featured in SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER [I refer specifically to the BeeGees, and BeeGees-produced tracks--nothing against the Gibb brothers, they are great in their own right, but their SNF stuff is definitely not "classic" disco in my book]. Nope, this is the real club stuff, not designed to capitalize on a trend, but which actually helped CREATE the trend. That being said, two highlights from this set WERE featured in SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, and are fine cuts and pretty exciting and dynamic: "Disco Inferno," and "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel."

This set is loaded with dance classics, among my favorites: Chic's "Good Times," and Odyssey's "Native New Yorker," the latter being one of the all-time, smooth, sophisticated 70's club tunes. And for those who like to spell while they dance there's even "Y.M.C.A."

In fact, for a representation of the finest of 70's dance/club music, you'd be hard-pressed to beat this set.

The sound is uniformly good throughout this entire series. Boogie on! Bravo!

JUST PERFECTION!!.......2006-04-08

I have all of Dmitri's recordings and this is my favorite due to the quality of the songs, Dmitri's mastery of all of them and the really lush orchestrations. All of the songs are just gorgeous and his voice so beautiful that I listen to this all day at work on my portable CD player. I recently saw him in concert and purchased the DVD of the "War Songs" which were featured in the second half of his concert. Of course, I recommend the CD and the DVD as really stunning. However, if I could only listen to one of his CD's, this is my favorite. As a former singer who trained for 15 years, I can tell you that Dmitri's vocal technique is perfect, just perfect! The voice comes from heaven! Don't wait to get this one!

Hvorostovsky...........again, magic.......2006-02-14

Moscow Nights - This collection is emotionally draining, sad; the minor keys, the great poets and composers, an era unexpressed to Americans. It is a revelation, tended by one of the most beautiful of Russian voices. Listen to it in pieces, in a quiet space, and ponder. Dmitri commands an opera stage - two visits to Queen of Spades at the Met- can lead to no other conclusion. However, it is his quiet recollections of Russian folk music, Russian sacred music, and Soviet music that arouses his greatest talents. This is a recording to be treasured.

hvorostovsky does it again.......2005-05-01

This is the latest installment of the succesfull Hvorostosky/Orbelian collaboration. In "I met you my love" the spotlight was on the socalled Russian Romances, russian art songs of the 19e century. Then came " Where are you my brothers" a collection of Russian war songs. This title contains a collection of the best post war(50s&60s) songs. If you love melodious songs in minor key this is it.The selection is quiet varied and everybody will have his or her own favourites. For me there was'nt a redundant song. The singing is as always faultless and inspired, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra plays topnotch and the arrangments by Evgeny Stesyuk are as always beautifull. But be warned this cd can have a depressing effect because besides being beautifull this music is also mostly very moving. Buy if you love russian music and good musicianship you can't go wrong with this one.

Great Collection!.......2005-08-12

I have been using Amazon.com for 6 years now, and this is the first product review i am doing.....just goes to show you how much i like this cd. I have been browsing for disco songs for many years, and this is the first time i have my all-time favorites on one disc. "Stomp", "Flashlight", and others to name a few, and classics. I would have paid twice the amount to get that!

Diana Ross ruins it all!!!!!.......2005-06-16

I bought this CD primarily because it contained the hit "Hang On In There Baby" by Johnny Bristol. Nowhere was it mentioned that this was a version that had been ruined by the addition of vocals by Diana Ross!!!!!! I found this to be misleading advertising and I was very disappointed. Had this CD not be saved by a few other good hits(Got to Give It Up for example), I would have thrown it in the trash. I wouldn't even sell it to a second-hand shop as nobody should have to be subjected to the screechings of Ms. Ross. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!

I rated 2 stars and the price is $2.99. "LET IT WHIP" by the Dazz Band, 2nd is " CELEBRATION" by Kool and the Gang, 3rd is the "SHAKE YOUR GROOVE THING" Peaches & Herb. The rest of the songs needs to be replace.

Funky Disco Fun!.......2002-01-20

This is a great CD because it contains the LONG versions of some great all time disco funk classics. ......... Although Disco isn't my favorite type of music per-se, I am a devout rocker with a alternative bent, I LOVE a few cuts here. ......... My first radio on-air job was in the Urban/CHR hits format. "Burn Rubber" from the Gap Band is one of my all-time favorite songs that I fell in love with at that time of my life. It is on here in all it's great funky entirety. A must have song from the brothers Wilson, not featured on any other compliations. ......... Another set of brothers, Johnson that is, do the other must have disco funk classic "Stomp" here. This song isn't featured on any other compilation I searched. I looked high and low at over 200 available CDs here at amazon, and found this cut included as well. ............ There's lots of good material for any disco funkster to boogie down with, like "Jungle Boogie" from Kool & TG, but in a really perfect world, "Take My Heart" would've been included too. Hey, bottom line, this is WELL worth a spot in your CD collections disco section.

The Much Maligned Quiet Nights... It's Pretty Good Really!.......2007-02-13

4.5 stars. I hesitated purchasing this for a long time, I'd heard bad things about it. I don't know why this is so maligned. It's really pretty good, although too short. If memory serves me, this was a project that was never completed and Teo released it anyway, much to Miles' chagrin. However, this is essential for the Miles collector. There is nothing substandard about the music, much of it is terrific. And I love the little quartet number "Summer Nights". The Barracuda's piece is from another project that had nothing to do with Quiet Nights. It doesn't really fit the mood of the rest of the release but it is very interesting.

Don't believe the naysayers.......2004-12-22

I read a bunch of quite negative reviews here which base most of their negativity on details extraneous to the music, like "Miles said this" or "The studio dates that." I've liked Miles for almost twenty years; I have many of his albums, including the officially "good" ones, and Quiet Nights remains one of my favorites of his or of anyone's. It is a project like Sketches of Spain, with a softer, more sensual, and darker (night-time) feel. I have always thought the cover expresses the mood of the album well. I feel as if I've stepped out of a Jobim cocktail party onto a night patio overlooking the lights of Rio de Janeiro when I hear it. Whatever its liner note details, this is an album made by Miles in his prime, and Gil Evans in his prime, and it doesn't matter that it's twenty-seven minutes long (or short) unless you are the kind of person who thinks small paintings are necessarily worse than big ones and short books are worse than long ones. There is no softer or warmer Miles album than this. Don't be afraid of this album. Miles doesn't have to sound "cool" all the time.

Good News and Bad News.....Bad News First.......2004-08-29

In the lengthy Miles Davis discography "Quiet Nights" is an enigma. The mystery is why it was ever released in the first place. Miles blamed producer Teo Macero for messing it up, except Miles did not use the word "messing"; he used a stronger word! When the recording first came out it totaled only 27 minutes of playing time. Only six of the seven cuts on the original recording featured Miles with the Gil Evans orchestra. The seventh cut is a quartet number with Miles, pianist Victor Feldman, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Frank Butler (I suspect it was recorded as part of Miles's "Seven Steps To Heaven" recording session but not included on that wonderful CD.) Adding to the "Quiet Nights" woes is some very shabby editing. OK so that's the bad news. Now here's some good news: I still like this recording. Gil Evans's arranging (what there is of it) is gorgeous and Miles plays with his usual poignant lyricism. The quartet number is moody and touching. And so when I listen to this CD I focus on the positives and try to ignore the negatives.....but oh what a wonderful recording this could have been! The "Quiet Nights" release I am reviewing did not include "The Time of the Barracudas" which I understand is a short suite composed for a play.

For the collector.......2002-02-01

This disc is a toss-up. "Song No.2" and "Corcovado" are beautiful. But overall the disc is short and seems less than satisfying. The listening experience is unfulfilling and feels like a mish-mash of cutting-room-floor material. Hardly essential.

A Tale of Two Albums.......2001-03-21

Ah, the poor lamented 'Quiet Nights.' An album I recently saw referred to as the "wicked step-child" of Miles' output. And here it is, re-mastered and souped up with a beautiful new set of liner notes (which, as it happens, have little nice to say about it). The album that Miles decryed instantly, that sent Gil lamented, that caused Columbia to rethink the strategy of the Miles-Gil teamups. But is it really all that bad?

As it turns out, no. If this album were made by, say, Frank Sanchez and the Red Cloud Rumblers it would be remembered (if it were remembered at all) as a bit too-short middle of the road excursion into Bosso Nova. The problem is that this was the follow up (of sorts) to 'Sketches of Spain' and it was by Miles Davis and Gil Evans, they of 'Miles Ahead' 'Porgy and Bess' and the aforementioned Spanish excursion. So it is a huge letdown, though Miles gets a few good moments. Really though, this shouldn't have been released. Many of the tracks were pieced together by Teo Macero (to Miles' horror) and even then they only had half an album. Columbia let that sit in the vaults for a couple of years, then tacked on "Summer Nights" which Evans had no involvement with whatsoever. Strangely, it is here that the album gets interesting.

The song (6:03 long, by the way, not 3:19 as the cover says...the original cover has it right on the inside jacket!) was a leftover from the brief quartet sessions of April 1963 that produced one half of 'Seven Steps to Heaven' (yes, I said Quartet...the cd gets it wrong again in listing George Coleman as playing). The song is great cool bop, and it's always a joy to hear Miles pull out his mute. Here the original album ended, but now we get the REAL treat.

Admittedly, you probably won't want to put "The Time of the Barracudas" on the same level as 'Miles Ahead' but compared to 'Quiet Nights' it is invigorating. Miles and Gil both sound more into it, and the piece has some wonderful passages, especially early on where the interplay between Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams and Ron Carter is unreal. Williams, in fact, is the central thing that makes this a minor-league gem. His drumming propels, pummels, and even eases throughout the course of this work. One only wishes this group would have spent more time here, and perhaps developed the true album that seems to want to come out.

So in the end you have the tale of two albums: one that shouldn't have been released but was, and one that should have but wasn't. Ultimately I can think of worse ways to spend twelve dollars, and if you're a Miles fan you'll have to have it (just for the last two songs). But most will want to let 'Quiet Nights' simply rest in peace.

I always loved GQ, I've been desperate for getting the original album release on CD. Even though, this release has a high quality sound, still has some short versions of the original tracks. And the Disco Nights version that appears in this compilation is a Remix of the original track. This compilation could be more a Greatest Hits of GQ than a CD release of the Disco Nights album. You win some you lose some... I hope some day, the original 5 minutes version of this song is available with the same quality of sound that this CD has. By the way, I'd like to see booklet with the original pictures...

Well worth the purchase price for the extended full length versions of the Miracles "Love Machine", Diana Ross "Love Hangover", Bonnie Pointer "Heaven must have sent you" and Thelma Houston "Don't leave me this way". These were the tracks that defined disco in the '70s. ...Kill for a copy!

Excellent selection of tracks for Deejays........2005-12-27

I ordered this for the hard to find hit "Livin It Up" by Bell & James, but I was delighted with all of the hits on this one. It's even better because each of these tracks are mastered in a way that can be easily mixed or remixed by deejays. As a long-time deejay this was a real treat.

This one is better than most volume with a handful off actual full length 12" versions, but there are still problems. However, the number ONE reason to get this volume is the EXTREMELY rare extended version of Donna Summer's Heaven Knows, which is actually edited on another volume of Disco Nights! Track times:

HAPPINESS.......2000-12-27

Michael Zager's "Let's All Chant" was THE underground dance classic of 1978, while Teena Marie's Square Biz and the Rick James song are lovely bubbling slabs of funk, In The Navy by Village People is real singalong pop disco, as is the Pointer Sisters track, and Never Can Say Goodbye was of course a huge pop hit. I think this is a great collection from an era when dance music still had style, soul and personality.

UNKNOWNS? I'm not sure how old Larry is, but I'm a 40 year old ex-nightclub disc jockey. ALL of these songs are great. Ollie and Jerry was a huge hit for me, as were Never Can Say Goodbye, Sugar Pie HoneyBunch, Let's All Chant, Square Biz...etc. I'd have to say that anyone who's looking for classic dance tracks would appreciate this cd. Some of the tracks on this cd are a little more familiar than others by title, but you'll remember them all once you listen to them!

Songs that never made it.......2000-01-24

This CD should be named "Songs That Never Made It". Except for 2 tracks (Jump and Heavan Knows),which are available on other volumes, the songs on this CD are all unknowns for a very good reason. It would be interesting to know the names of the DJ's who thought these were their "Favorite Pix".
