Great album.......2005-11-25
Beautiful, soulful playing. Although I have heard these pieces played by other cellists/orchestras, to me these are definitive performances. I had not heard Ofra Harnoy before either but I seem to be able to identify her playing now. As I was listening to a piece by Elgar on my way home from work a few hours ago I was captivated by the cello. I thought to myself "this sounds like Ofra Harnoy". When I got home I checked the radio schedule and it was indeed her. Now I'm listening to music samples of her other recordings on Amazon. I should add that just as Elgar's cello concerto was Jacqueline De Pre's signature piece, Bruch's Kol Nidrei is to me the piece which best expresses the unique qualities of Ofra's playing. Minor keys become her. And for some reason I am always reminded of Hebreic melodies/scales/keys by her playing.
PS: There is someone who has posted several 1 star reviews for Ofra Harnoy's recordings (curious that he totally pans one album and then apparently buys another and says pretty much the same thing about that one). I would recommend that you disregard those reviews.

Very Good To Memorable Recordings of Bernstein's American Composer Recordings.......2007-07-01
This is yet another superb box set of Bernstein's Deutsche Grammophon recordings, emphasizing his strong affinity and interest in the work of such great American composers like Charles Ives, Aaron Copland and William Schuman. The best recordings are those with The New York Philharmonic of Charles Ives's orchestral works and Aaron Copland's Third Symphony, "Quiet City" suite for horn and strings, and the El Salon de Mexico ballet suite. But I also admire Bernstein's recordings with the Los Angeles Philharmonic of Gershwin's great classical/jazz orchestral works like "Rhapsody in Blue" and "An American in Paris", and the recordings of several other Copland scores, most notably, "Appalachian Spring". Like virtually all of the other recordings in Deutsche Grammophon's "Collector's Edition" series of Leonard Bernstein, these were recorded by Deutsche Grammophon in the 1980s, often during live concert performances held in Los Angeles, Tel Aviv, and New York City (Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall). While some may prefer Bernstein's classic recordings of Copland and Ives for CBS Masterworks (now Sony) in the late 1950s and 1960s, these have the benefit of being digital recordings made by Deutsche Grammophon's then state-0f-the-art recording processes. Without question, anyone who is a fan of Copland's, Gershwin's or Ives' scores and of Leonard Bernstein will surely cherish this fine 6 CD box set.

Ancerl & Navarra Strike Gold!.......2005-10-14
The Supraphon label has been doing an excellent job of reissuing large parts of their back catalog over the last few years. Not only are they releasing numerous performances with the Czech Philharmonic and visiting conductors like Kletzki and Matacic (see my reviews), but they have also remastered (in 24/96) many of the recordings of conductor Karel Ancerl in a new series called the "Gold Edition." Volume 27 of this series features Ancerl and the Czech PO performing Bloch's "Schelomo," Schumann's Cello Concerto, and Respighi's "Adagio with Variations" all with the great cellist Andre Navarra in stereo from 1964-65. This is one of my favorite discs in the Ancerl Gold series thus far, and the reason mostly has to do with Navarra. He was a giant of the instrument who unfortunately got less notice in his day than higher profile players like Fournier, Gendron and Starker. But compare his Schumann and it more than holds its own against the aforementioned triumvirate of cellists (see my reviews). The Bloch and Respighi cello pieces are less known but are by no means lesser works, and Navarra & Ancerl turn in memorable performances. With quality discs such as this, I look forward to purchasing (and reviewing) more titles from the "Gold Edition."
