You say your favorite Vivaldi passage is the Four Seasons summer storm? Well, here's a disc for you. Fabio Biondi and the Europa Galante (known to many for their bestselling Seasons disc) focus on concerti con titoli, the titled concertos the Red Priest wrote that are full of inventive drama and expression. Writing for his student orchestra, the composer employed plenty of creativity in his instrumentation, and, as evidenced on a few tracks here, he wasn't beyond recycling motifs from his older works. But just give this exciting disc a listen. The Concerto funebre (RV 579) is sweet, yet somber; the six-movement La notte (RV 439) is weird and ominous; and the stormy seas of La tempesta di mare really come alive in Europa Galante's hands. Biondi and his ensemble never try to steal the show from these works; they let the music speak for itself. Some period-instrument groups sound a little ragged, but this one gets it just right and delivers a knockout, taut performance. A great disc for Baroque lovers. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars HOT RECORDING.......2006-03-27

It has been said that Vivaldi's Violin Concerti can give one the impression that he wrote the same concerto about a 1000 times. Perhaps the reason for the aforesaid impression is that there are many recordings and/or performances that exhibit little imagination in the programming of the concertos or in the playing of same. In other words, they border on being rather boring with a feeling of repeativeness. This recording is the exception. Fabio Biondi and the Europa Galante in this recording perform these concertos in a "hot" and most exciting manner that made me feel that I was hearing them for the very first time. I know that the programming of the disc also had a lot to do with me not getting bored while listening to this recording. Fabio Biondi and the Europa Galante are an "original" instrumental group without even a hint of the astringency usually associated with "original" instruments. Their playing is rather sweet in the slow movements as it is certainly very vigorous in the fast movements with no "mouth puckering" bite! I really loved the concerto for two cellos; it is very richly textured and sonorous; plus Europa Galante plays it splendidly.

Believe me, I found this Vivaldi recording, for once, to be very exciting and a most enjoyable listening experience!

If you want to hear a "hot" recording of some Vivaldi at his best, buy this disc.

5 out of 5 stars lively vivaldi.......2005-11-09

I'm not a baroque expert as some of the other reviewers seem to be. I do listen to a lot of music and have heard much Vivaldi -- most frequently the Four Seasons warhorse from Opus 8. This Vivaldi is quite enjoyable, very bright and very well played, energetic and well-recorded. My personal favorite was the last work for two cellos. The slow movement is absolutely beautiful. RV 270 is also quite excellent. This is a worthwhile purchase. Sometimes when period groups play his music Vivaldi sounds mummified but not here. Recommended.

I know Biondi and Europa Galante since they were playing on the label Opus 111. I am a great fan of Europa galante. But...I was quite disappointed when I heard this CD. Mainly because I did not find Biondi the arrogant. But he can't certainly not played like "a little electric tornado" in the "Concerto funebre". It's the same in Concerto "Per eco in lontano". I particularly hate this music with this boring echo;the same music which is repeated from " outer space". The Concerto "Il riposo.."is perfect to relax with the dog. "L'inquietude" is outstanding. Even better than the Carmignola version on Divox Antiqua (1995). "La tempesta di mare" and La Notte" are enough strange and captivating to be considered as interesting performances. But they not be compared with the fabulous interpretation of Jean-Christophe Spinosi (Ensemble Matheus-2002-Label Naive). Finally the "Concerto for 2 cellos and orchestra" has already been recorded in 1993 by Europa Galante(album "Vivaldi Concerti" (Vol.22. Opus 111)). So no great surprise for me there. A very good CD to someone who want to discover Vivaldi with talentuous musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Biondi rulez..........2002-01-11

I know I have been very negative in my other reviews of Biondi-cds. Actually, I almost take it back!
He is NOT an opera-conductor, period. But he IS a brilliant violinist! His playing in the Vivaldi concertos is just outstanding. The orchestra is also amazing. I really recommends this set of concertos to anyone not familiar with the Biondi legacy!

5 out of 5 stars Vibrant Vivaldi.......2001-06-12

Vivaldi is played with excitement by Europa Galante, a string and woodwind orchestra 13 strong here. Some collections of Vivaldi concertos can sound a bit monotonous, but not this carefully selected group of emotively titled short pieces. Instrumentation is varied, the playing is enthusiastic and energetic as needed, and the strings really bite in the staccato "Sea Tempest," the waves slapping hard on the boat. The 6-movement "Night" is remarkably eerie and ghostly, particularly if you can cleanse your ears of all the chromatic pieces written since and try to listen with 18th century expectations. RV 234 is full of unsettling "Apprehension" no matter what later music you have heard, displaying a harried and rapidly modulated sense of harmonic uncertainty. The brief notes with the CD are a slightly strange mixture of English and untranslated Italiano. Fresh and well worth listening closely.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent cd.......2006-12-30

This is a wonderful Vivaldi selection that does a great job of featuring bassoon. It is classic Vivaldi music and is only made better by the addition of the bassoon solos. For anyone who enjoys the gorgeous energeticness of Vivaldi and wants to hear some bassoon, this is the cd to get.

5 out of 5 stars A Discovery.......2006-08-27

My wife and I were searching for a concert performance piece heard on the radio. Unable to find the exact title, we bought Vivaldi: Complete Basson Concertos, Vol. 1 & 2. We were delighted with both the compositions and the performance. Great music while on long trips. A real discover, depending on your interests.

5 out of 5 stars bassoon playing at its finest.......2005-11-25

This is an excellent set of CDs; the bassoon playing is absolutely superb. It can be hard to find great recordings of Vivaldi bassoon concerti on modern instruments, but Benkocs's playing is refined and technically brilliant. This is definitely one of the best bassoon recordings I've ever heard, on par with Dag Jensen, with whom Benkocs studied. Congrats to Naxos for finding a great bassoonist to do this project!

5 out of 5 stars Thank you!.......2005-05-29

Until this set of recordings was started, all we really had as far as recordings of Vivaldi bassoon concerti were one or two performances of the more popular ones by excellent bassoonists and a load of garbage by a man named Daniel Smith, whose playing is an abomination to both Vivaldi and the bassoon.

(It sickens me that, when we have incredible bassoonists like Dag Jensen and Bernard Garfield and Knut Sönstevold and David McGill and Laurent Lefevré and the late Maurice Allard--perhaps the greatest bassoonist to ever live--and a host of others, all of whom could play circles around Daniel Smith, that the latter's recordings outsell those of the former. He's been called the "James Galway of the bassoon", a pure load of dingo's kidneys by somebody who's obviously never heard even a decent bassoonist in his life. Ridiculous.)

Although Tamás' tone is a little dark for my tastes, it's certainly extremely pleasant to listen to. His phrasing is very beautiful, his technique is spotless, and unlike bassoonists with the initials D.S., he doesn't sound constipated.

Thank you, Tamás. Hopefully, if you complete this set, people will come to their senses.

Buy these discs. You'll like them.

5 out of 5 stars The First of a Series of All of Vivaldi's Bassoon Concerti.......2004-01-24

I don't think I've ever heard a bad recording of a Vivaldi bassoon concerto. That may say more about me than about the recordings, but I don't think so. There is something about these concerti that attracts good players and, let's face it, these are not the most profound compositions ever written; they tend to be virtuosic for the soloist and have fairly simple orchestral accompaniments. They are, however, unfailingly pleasant, falling gracefully on the ear. I have particularly liked the recordings of Klaus Thuneman, Michael McCraw, and William Bennett. Here we have what appears to be the beginning of a new series of Vivaldi Bassoon Concerti featuring a bassoonist heretofore unknown to me, Tamás Benkócs (whose name, I'm informed by a Hungarian friend, is pronounced roughly TAHmahsh BENcoach). He is accompanied by the modern-instrument Nicolaus Esterházy Sinfonia conducted by Béla Drahos, the group and conductor that have made creditable recordings of Beethoven and Haydn symphonies for the Naxos label.

Vivaldi is thought to have written 39 bassoon concerti, of which two or more are incomplete. This CD contains, for those of you who are counting, seven of this number. They are RV 476 in C, 487 in F, 471 in C, 498 in A minor, 480 in C minor, 503 in B flat minor, 493 in G. (RV stands for 'Ryom-Verzeichnis', the catalog made of Vivaldi's works by musicologist Péter Ryom.) I list the specific concerti because Amazon has not done so on this page, or at least they haven't as of this review.

The performances are exemplary. Benkócz's playing is technically flawless as well as being musical. His playing is equally impressive in the dancing fast movements and the more pensive middle movements. He does employ a bit more expressive range than some other players; this possibly accords with more modern scholarship about baroque performance practice. Whether it does or not, it pleased me. Further, his tone is very rich, even in rapid passages. He uses a moderate amount of vibrato, praise be. Tempi are well-chosen.

Pity the poor record label that sets out to record all of Vivaldi's extant concerti for all instruments, something over five hundred. Maybe they'll stop with these bassoon works; I figure they can probably get the bassoon concerti onto about five or six CDs, a number that is not overwhelming. I'll be looking for further issues.

Excellent selection of his music and as usual flawlessly performed by the english consort.

4 out of 5 stars A Little More Vivaldi Please.......2003-12-28

This budget-priced, slim paper-sleeved box set of various Vivaldi Concertos on the DG/Archiv label is quite excellent. Trevor Pinnock, directing from the harpsichord and organ, leads the English Concert (an all-star cast including Roy Goodman and Simon Standage, both of whom have graduated to the podium in recent years) in digital recordings from the late 80s. Since the track information is not abundantly clear above, allow me to mention that the first two discs of this set feature various Concertos, discs 3 & 4 contain the complete "L'estro amonico" op. 3, and CD5 six Flute Concertos op. 10. While I have never been a big fan of period-instrument recordings, there is nothing I can complain about here. The performances are warm, spirited, and thoroughly engaging, and certainly not academic. In fact, my only complaint is that there is not more to listen to. I popped this set in my 5-disc changer over the Holidays, and was disappointed to find it end so soon, being that four of the five CDs log in at the mid-50 minute mark and one only at a whopping 45:08. By my calculations, there is easily room for an additional two hours of material here! Alas, it is the only problem with an otherwise stellar set.

I was surprised to hear this music at first and it took a few minutes to adapt to the sopranino recorder's high pitch.

However, it became quite interesting and satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars Vivaldi: Complete Recorder Concertos ~ Istvan Hartenstein.......2005-06-01

The recorder is a very misunderstood instrument. Many people see it as an instrument for small children and this could be no further from the truth. Vivaldi shows with his compositions for the recorder that it is very beautifull instrument in its own right and should not be dismissed based on olde ideas. I love this kind of music and it is very nice indeed to listen to and Vivaldi has cretaed some amazing recorder music that should be listened to people that love classical music and great music in general.

Another installment in Philips's Set Your Life to Music series (which has included Mozart for Your Mind, Baroque at Bathtime, and Rachmaninoff for Romance, among others), Vivaldi for Valentines is loosely built around the aura of romance that Venice continues to evoke. Vivaldi captured it for all time in his music, inspired by the often melancholy beauty of his native city, one that has been known through the ages as La Serenissima. Along with such ultrafamiliar pieces as the "Winter" largo movement from The Four Seasons (in which the violin sighs a rapturous melody against sounds imitating a crackling, cozy fire) and the Largo of the Guitar Concerto in D--Vivaldi's slow movements, with all their gentle dreaminess, being given the limelight in this compilation--are many gems you've likely not heard before. The list of performers and approaches is too expansive even to mention but predominantly features performances by I Musici. It's hard to believe that Vivaldi's music, having sunk into oblivion, resurfaced again only a few decades ago. This is a pleasant compilation that makes a perfect entrée if you'd like to learn more about classical music--and Vivaldi in particular--than The Four Season. And, as for setting a romantic mood, this will give your mojo all the help it needs. --Thomas May

When it comes to Vivaldi's works, the majority of people usually tend to associate him solely with composing the Four Seasons. However, this particular cd will introduce classical music lovers to other music that he composed for various stringed instruments, including the violin and cello. It does include a section from Winter of the Four Seasons, but the rest is other music that some may not be too familiar with. For a low price, you'll be getting a great selection of music.

I don't really know a lot about classical music even though I listen to a lot of it. All I can say is that every piece on this collection evokes a tremendous amount of peace and happy emotion. I listen to it in my office, and that in combination with my new fountain.... better than Prozac. My favorite piece is "Concerto for Guitar in D major: Largo" (sample #2 above). Highly recommend!

Almost everyone knows Vivaldi's "Four Seasons". If you love that gorgeous piece of music, than I say your next purchase should be this! It is a gorgeous collecton of string quartets along with flutes and very impressive classical guitar. I put it on whenever I need to be taken away from this world, or when I need some artistic inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Best Vivaldi Recording Ever.......2004-03-02

Ok, maybe just one of the top five. Some recorded performances may be perfectly in tune, well-engineered, and perfectly dull. This one breathes liveliness into pieces that are often recorded in a perfunctory manner. I heard this when I was in college, and still own the disk. When I hear other versions of these pieces on the radio, I think, "Why did they bother?" Janigro captured the passion behind the etude-like form of Vivaldi's melodies, and his soloists soared without distancing themselves from the groove of the ensemble.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent addition to the series.......2007-05-13

If you have been collecting the previous volumes of Naxos' complete survey of Antonio Vivaldi's (1678-1741) bassoon concertos, as I have, you are probably expecting good things from Volume Four. Happily, I can report that the playing and sound quality is up to the excellent standard established by the previous entries in this series. And, what of the concertos themselves? Although this may be more subjective, I actually think the six concertos presented here, on average, are the most interesting in this series thus far.

Similar to Volume Three (Vivaldi: Bassoon Concertos 3), this release contains two minor key concertos (RV 481, 499) and four major key concertos (RV 485, 477, 470, 494). Although each of the six concertos recorded here are highly inventive, even by Vivaldi's standards, my personal favorite is RV 477. I find the open movement's slyly simple descending theme in the upper strings to be wholly irresistible (Track 7). This concerto's conclusion is interesting for Vivaldi's simultaneous use of the bass and tenor qualities of the bassoon. Listen to the downbeat bass anchors followed by ornamentations in the tenor register as an example (Track 9). Another favorite is the tempestuous opening ritornello of RV 481 (Track 1), followed by an unforgetable doleful bassoon melody. Throughout this series it should be noted that Benkócs handles all of the wide leaps and rapid figurations with ease (or at least he makes it sound easy), and takes care to provide the appropriate stylistic contrasts called for in these pieces, whether it is through his legato versus staccato articulation or through his clearly discernable pianos and fortes.

In my review of Volume Three of this series, I made some comparisons to ASV's competing set of bassoon concertos. I think those comparisons continue to remain applicable. Namely, the sound engineering and bassoon playing is superior on the Naxos series. While on the other hand, I find the ensemble and continuo playing to be more characteristic on the ASV series. But, the reason to acquire Vivaldi's bassoon concertos is to experience the unbelievable virtuosity it requires to perform these tremendously tricky pieces, and Benkócs surely disappoint. Just listen to the rapid fire sixteenth note precision in the conclusion of RV 494 (Track 18). With that said, the Naxos series is the clear choice here, without even considering Naxos' lower price.

In conclusion, this release is fully and enthusiastically recommended to those collecting this series. If you have yet to begin collecting these fascinating concertos, this volume makes an excellent introduction to Vivaldi's bassoon concertos.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific! Already looking forward to volume four.......2006-07-30

If you haven't already acquired the first two volumes of this series, you are missing out. These are charming works, and the playing by bassoon virtuoso Tamas Benkocs is fantastic.

Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) composed nearly 500 concertos. More than half of these are for violin, while the remaining concertos are scored for a variety instruments. One of the mysteries about Vivaldi concerns why he left 39 bassoon concertos, which is more than the number of concertos Vivaldi left for any other solo instrument, save the violin. If the bassoon concertos were written for a particular virtuoso, the identity of that person is not known to us today. Nevertheless, Vivaldi understood the technical capabilities of the instrument well, and makes dual use of the bassoon, with lyrical tenor lines contrasted against bass note accents.

On this release we are presented with two minor key concertos (RV 495, 500) and four major key concertos (RV 474, 483, 502, 472). The outer movements of the concertos are a display of virtuosity, while the aria second movements are intensely lyrical. The concerto that stands out here is RV 483 in E flat major, with its blazingly fast opening movement. The precise tonguing here really has to be heard to be believed. Another interesting concerto is the RV 472 in C major, with its tricky third movement in which the sixteenth note laden solo part gives Benkocs the opportunity to showcase his ability to jump between the instrument's tenor and bass range and to contrast between legato and staccato sixteenth note runs. Also notable are the lovely minor key concertos, but of course, all of the concertos here are great. After all, this is Vivaldi.

It should be noted that there is a competing set of bassoon concertos on the ASV label (full price) featuring Daniel Smith; however the Naxos series is definitely recommended above that one. First, and most important, Smith's bassoon playing is a very awkward and clumsy compared to Benkocs' superb rendition. To be direct, Benkocs' technique, especially his tonguing, is far superior to Smith's. Further, Smith's technique is such that the clicking of the bassoon keys is often audible, which is rather annoying, especially in the middle movements. Second, Naxos' sound is far more clear and transparent compared to the somewhat fuzzy sound on ASV. Also, the ensemble, especially the continuo, is presented more forwardly on the ASV recording, and often covers up the solo part (probably not what Vivaldi intended). This may not be a bad thing for the ASV recording though, as this is the one thing it has going for it. The ensemble playing on the ASV label is a bit more characteristic, especially the continuo player who takes far more liberties with the part in comparison to the player on the Naxos label. This type of thing may not appeal to those who prefer a strict reading of the continuo part, but I actually prefer this characteristic playing a bit more.

In summary, this is a fantastic release and is highly recommended to those who may be looking to acquire something other than another set of Vivaldi's violin concertos.

5 out of 5 stars This Fine Series Continues.......2006-07-16

I gave a rave review to the first in this series of recordings by Hungarian bassoon virtuoso Tamás Benkócs of Vivaldi's thirty-nine bassoon concerti. You can guess that I am similarly impressed with this third issue in the series. It contains six of the concerti -- RV 495 in G minor, 474 in C major, 483 in E flat major, 502 in B flat major, 472 in C major, and 500 in A minor, in that order -- and is of uniformly high quality. I need add little about Benkócz's abilities, but I was particularly struck by his amazingly virtuosic rapid-fire repeated notes in the opening Presto of R 483. It fair takes your breath away. He is not just a virtuosic showman; he excels in the arioso middle movements of these three-movement concerti. All the accompaniments are for string orchestra, again the Nicolaus Esterházy Sinfonia under Béla Drahos who, I've just learned, formed the orchestra specifically to record for Naxos, which he did in the label's early complete set of Beethoven and Haydn symphonies as well as a quite creditable 'Fidelio.'

You will not be disappointed with this issue. By my calculation there should be another three or four volumes in this series before Benkócs and Drahos can move on to, say, the bassoon concerti of Mozart, Weber and Hummel.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Vivaldi Concerto Style.......2006-10-24

The London Chamber Orchestra led by Christopher Warren-Green who also plays violin on this 2 CD offering gives the listener an excellent collection of concertos of this prolific composer.

Here one has not only the infamous Four Seasons Concerto wonderfully performed, but also concertos for single, two, three and four violins, oboe, cello, bassoon and trumpets. Personally, I truly enjoy the bassoon piece as well as the cello. Wish they would have done the delightful Cello Concerto RV 406 which is absolutely a knockout!
