There are many recordings of the Prokofiev but a new Delos release (DE 3247) combines them with the recording premiere of Zurab Nadarejshvili's 1987 and the result is a stunning 72 minutes of Russian chamber music. Drawing upon the never very happy events of Russia's history in this century, the Nadarejshvili work begins with music based on Georgian chants to reflect the feelings of that people under the influence of Stalin and the Second World War. The second movement "echoes the pseudo-folk songs of the 1930s," the last movement mourns the dead. All of this is explained, a bit briefly, in the notes; but music should be absolute and this work speaks for itself. By way of contrast, the producers decided to sandwich that work between the two by Prokofiev, both of which should be fairly familiar to anyone already "into" 20th century Russian music. Suffice it to say here that the St. Petersburg String Quartet certainly plays with the "passion" mentioned in the press release. I leave it to you to judge the "mastery" also mentioned there. For myself, I hear nothing but convincing and dedicated playing.
