4 out of 5 stars I'm not a music expert.......2005-08-25

I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.

Now, here's what you'll get in this box set, seeing as Amazon does not give it a description. 40 cds! no joke, you get 40 cds in this box set. It features:
1. Complete symphonies
2. Complete symphonic poems
3. Cello concerto
4. Piano concerto
5. Violin concerto
6. Requiem
7. Stabat Mater
8. Slavonic Dances
9. Complete String quartets
10. Chamber music
11. Piano Works (solo and duet)
12. Rusalka

As far as I can tell, the only things missing are The Spectre's Bride and Jacobin. Seeing as it is 40 cds, i have not had an opportunity to listen to it, however what i have heard i have been quite satisfied with.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Minneapolis Symphony Shines Again.......2005-11-11

This box set of recordings by the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (known today as the Minnesota Orchestra) is a dream come true for anyone who grew up hearing this magnificent group either live or on LP. Listeners cannot help but be impressed by their remarkable clarity, rhythmic vitality, and artful precision (dare I call it the "Minneapolis Sound"?)- especially when you consider that these recordings were made in the 50s and 60s on the stage of Northrup Auditorium at the University of Minnesota.

Antal Dorati had a keen ear for orchestral color, and this collection is a lasting testament to his instincts. Anyone who reveres the old recordings by such conductors as Ormandy, Bernstein, Reiner, Szell, et al., are highly encouraged to check out this collection. The hauntingly exotic "Seven Studies on Themes of Paul Klee" by Gunther Schuller (commissioned by the Orchestra) is an all-too-rare gem that deserves to be heard - a modern-day "Pictures at an Exhibition".

Dorati carried his concepts of color over to his recordings with the London Symphony Orchestra, as the Stravinsky and Prokofiev selections will attest.

I encourage audiophiles to discover one of those "other" orchestras from "back then". I think it will be a "sound" investmment.

5 out of 5 stars Dorati's MLP Gems Are Back!.......2005-10-03

Those familiar with my reviews on Amazon know of my great love for the Mercury Living Presence series. Equally great is my disgust that so many of these brilliant recordings have been deleted in the last few years! Thankfully, some of these legendary performances are resurfacing, and while the single disc SACD Hybrid titles are unfortunately listed at full-price, it is wonderful to see the various multi-disc sets basically being sold at budget line. With this 5CD reissue, some of Antal Dorati's legendary MLP recordings are restored to the catalog, as all of the original single issue CDs of these titles had all gone out-of-print over the last few years. To illustrate how prized these recordings are by collectors, if you wanted to buy these five titles just a few months ago in the Amazon Marketplace it would have cost you four times the price of this new set! Buying this collection for Dorati's accounts of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and Petrouchka alone is worthwhile, as they are two of those works greatest performances. Of course getting memorable recordings of Strauss' Till Eulenspiegel, Don Juan, Death & Transfiguration and the conductor's own Suite from Der Rosenkavalier; Prokofiev's 5th Symphony and Suites from Scythian and Love for Three Oranges; Albeniz' Iberia Suite along with Falla, Moussorgsky and Smetana excerpts; and Gershwin's American in Paris, Copland's Rodeo Dances, and some wild Schuller and Bloch compositions (whew!) is just more to get excited about. Overall, it makes for quite an attractive package -- glorious golden age stereo recordings returned to the catalog at a very reasonable price. Once again, Mercury Living Presence lives!

5 out of 5 stars Listen,Learn, & Grow: Playtime.......2007-05-14

The music is excellent, with high quality sound. Not irritating as some classical music can be. Plus the tempo's are varied which is great depending if you need something fast paced or more slow. Best of all, the kids enjoyed it!

5 out of 5 stars Grandkids love it!.......2007-01-03

How to gently insert a little culture into the grandkids' lives without Mom freaking out.....send this set of CDs for Christmas. Dad's into heavy metal and Mom, although she has a long history of listening to Classical music as a child, is now into Country. Nothing wrong with that, but how are the three little ones going to hear any of the Classics with Grandma living more than 600 miles away? "Play this in the background while they're having creative time," said I, "and see if they don't enjoy it." When I talked with them a week later the 4 year old couldn't wait to tell me how much he liked the "playtime music" I'd sent him. The quality of the recording is good and the variety of rhythms and tempos make it interesting. Yes they're a little trite and you're going to have to explain that the theme to "the Bad News Bears" really is Classical, but that's okay. If they skipped the genius of Mozart as an infant, or even if they teethed to "the Magic Flute", these CDs will give them a taste of a variety of good music and who knows how far into the Classical realm it may send them as they mature?

    3 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2007-06-05

This CD contains several orchestral piece by Dvorak. All are good, but the first, A Hero's Song is the most dramatic and powerful. Unfortunately, its performance is not the best around, and this reviewer has heard more powerful and richer recordings on the radio. The CD sound quality is great though. The number of pieces is OK, and the CD could have included another track.

4 out of 5 stars A Gem for Dvorak Lovers.......2004-10-28

Once again, Naxos does what Naxos does best: producing quality recordings at a budget price. In this collection we have four works of Dvorak, two of which are familiar and two which are not as well known. Each piece is quintessentially Dvorak. The symphonic poem "A Hero's Song" uses a musical style that Dvorak masters. According to the liner notes, some musicologists believe that Dvorak is the hero of the piece, confident in his skills as a musician in spite of obstacles and criticisms, remains loyal to his gift, and is ultimately triumphant. This is perhaps the strongest track of the recording, performed with a power and conviction fitting of such a work. "The Czech Suite" is probably the best known work of the recording. I have two other recordings of this piece, and prefer Antoni Wit's interpretation. He seems to be able to draw out the richness of the score, paces it well, and allows the listener to enjoy the Czech flavor of the music. "The Hussite Overture" and the well known "Festival March complete the recording. Musically these two works are not as sophisticated as the first two tracks, but both are performed well.

As with many Naxos recordings, the conductor and orchestra are not instantly recognizable musicians, but lack of familiarity does not mean mediocrity. Both the conductor (Antoni Wit) and the Orchestra (The Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra) seem at home with the music of Dvorak and the result is a very pleasing recording.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully refined performances throughout........2000-07-05

I found this CD an absolute delight! From opening to closing measure of each piece, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Antoni Wit, give beautifully refined and idiomatic performances. Tempi tend to be little more laid back than in other versions I've heard, but this more than compensated for by the nicely rustic, Slavonic character with which the music is played. The CD's sound is superb throughout, aided greatly by the warm and resonant acoustics of the Concert Hall of the Polish Radio, where this recording was made. Aficionados of Antonin Dvorak's music will find this a most enjoyable listening experience.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable album.......2004-11-07

There are plenty of great recordings of Ma Vlast. Actually, this one (Walter Weller conducting the Israel Philharmonic) is my favorite, even though Kubelik is a close second and Levine is good too. And there's also a choice I'm almost sure you haven't thought of, the superb performance by Igor Ardasev and Renata Ardaseva as a piano duet!

When you get this version, not only do you have an unforgettable Ma Vlast, you get a second CD that includes Antal Dorati conducting the Detroit Symphony in Dvorak's Czech Suite, Nokturno, and Prague Waltzes. Plus, there's Istvan Kertesz conducting the Israeli Philharmonic in some more works by Smetana (Hakon Jarl and the Overture, Polka and Furiant from the Bartered Bride). Of these, the Prague Waltzes and the Czech Suite are my favorites.

    I heartily recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious "Ma Vlast".......2004-06-28

This is a very good czech collection includes Smetana's best known works and Dvorak's less known but all-worth-listening works.

CD 1 includes Smetana's complete symphonic poem cycle "Ma Vlast" (My Fatherland). This cycle based on six movements which, the second is ever-famous "Moldau". This cycle (as in name) tells about Czechoslovakia's historic lands and legends. As you know, Moldau is the famous river.
    The other movements are:
    1. Vysherad is the castle which protect the capital Prague in 13th century.

    3. Sarka is the woman-hero who was lived in 13th century. She was fighted with Frenchs and but their general was fall in love to Sarka. So, she (with her charm) was deceived and then she invited the some of Frenchs for drink wine. Then, all of them (except Sarka) gets drunk and Sarka, secretly was added a poison which make them sleepy. So, all of them sleeps, and then Sarka calls her Czech army with her horn. And gradullay they comes, and all of them kills Frenchs (with their general), while they're sleeping!

    5. Tabor is the army of the country and then 6. Blanik is the contiuation of Tabor. Blanik is the mountain which, the army's shelter, while they're waiting the "war alarm". But, this movement ends with a triumphal finale, which includes the main "Vysherad" and "God's Warriors" chorale. This work is very succesful example of patriotic music and it is to affect nationalism.

The performance of this work is very good. This is may be one of the best recordings of Walter Weller and Israel P O, too. They played this programme with emotion.

CD 2 starts with the overture and polka of Smetana's best known opera "The Bartered Bride". Especially, polka is a very beautiful example of this kind. The performances by Israel P O again, but conductor is Istvan Kertesz, who always a champion in perform Czech music. And then, there is a less known tone poem, Hakon Jarl, based on a Norwegian warrior legend. Conductor is again Walter Weller.

And at last, Dvorak and his beautiful Czech Suite which includes Furiant, Polka, Minuetto and like these dances. And there is a gentle work "Prague Waltzes" and a romantic "Notturno". All of these are digital recording and performed by Detroi S O, conducted by another legendary conductor, Antal Dorati.

This is a very good collection and highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Czech Collection.......2003-11-14

This two-disc set from the "Double Decker" series is a very good, if not definitive, collection of famous and lesser-known Czech orchestral works. Smetana's "Ma Vlast," a work virtually owned by conductors Kubelik and Ancerl (see my review of the latter), is performed well by Walter Weller and the Israel Philharmonic, who return for an encore on disc two with Smetana's "Hakon Jarl." Selections from Smetana's "The Bartered Bride" are done again with the IPO, but this time they are led by one of my favorite conductors, Istvan Kertesz. As much as I enjoy Kertesz, the highlights of this collection for me are the lesser-known pieces by Dvorak. Antal Dorati (another one of my favs) and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra offer us early digital recordings of the Prague Waltzes, Nocturne and Czech Suite. In all, this is a collection that will appeal to the casual fan and serious collector alike.

3 out of 5 stars A gateway drug, nothing more, nothing less. .......2007-03-11

To say that this album constitutes a necessity for the classical music enthusiast would be a great big unarguable lie. It has nothing innovative to offer you as a listener, except for maybe the labelling of melodies such as "My Heart Will Go On" (that god-awful Love Theme from the gruesome film Titanic) as a worthy member of "Best Classics 100". But than again, every collection of things that does not naturally belong together, is bound to have at least one outcast where the connection clearly isn't based on anything but cost and sale-ability.

This might sound like the beginning of a CD-slaughter, or a snobbish review where only the Deutche Grammophone's recordings are meting my standards, but although I am fairly picky when it comes to musical collections, best of albums, and such horrifying destructions of the universality of the works and the intentions of the artist behind it, I am willing to give this collection another chance, since classical music is somewhere between Arabic and wine in degree of unmanageability. It also helps that all the tunes are familiar to almost every one of us, and the fact that the artists' intentions probably got killed by the hundreds of different conductors trying to convey their personal interpretation of the works.

What I am saying is that this CD can be to classical music enthusiast what 'absolute rock' can be to a rock enthusiast, or to someone slightly interested, with no conceptual frames of where to start the search for knowledge. "Best Classics 100" offers nothing except a selection of melodies where there's bound to be one for every taste, but where the album feeling, the entirety or completeness intended by the composer, or conductor, or performer is completely lost in a trade-off made with variety.

The collection is attempted organised by giving each CD a different theme, supposedly to describe the mood of the music, and the labeller succeeds only to a limited extent as we move from themes such as 'uplifting' and 'relaxing' towards 'golden'. I wonder what that golden feeling constitutes. It apparently is to be found in, amongst others, "Jesus Bleibet Meine Freunde", and in "My Heart Will Go On"?

But no matter how I try to describe this CD it will sound worse than it actually is. This because to me it works as a great reference to which I can always turn with my classical music questions. Was it Schumann or Schubert who were the sad one? Of all the -inis, which where which again? Who composed "O Mio Babbino Caro"? The starting point for finding out if you belong to the romantic or the renascence wing, lies within this assemblage, if you look with your ears.

If you feel that classical music is something you like, and you'd like to learn more about it, this is a way to get started. If used together with a book on classical music, or wikipedia, it can be a gateway drug, leading you towards the great different experiences to be found within the different genres of classical music, and within the different periods ranging from the 12th century, maybe even earlier, towards yesterdays and tomorrows spectacular compositions of melodies that conveys a feeling, a state of mind with much more precision than any other musical genre. Expect a fairly alright collection of classical prunes, and you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Selection, But..........2005-04-21

...The Audio Quality is really not great. I bought this CD because I am new to classical, and the price was great! 100 songs for 25 bucks, thats like 25 cents a song, most songs are 1 dollar or more. Now I know why it's cheaper. The audio quality isn't that good. I imported the entire collection to my computer using Apple Lossless, and it sounded fuzzy, not crisp, with background noise, and sounded like compressed music, cutting off the frequency response.
I then played the CD's through my home stereo, with the same results. I plugged in my SHURE E5c headphones and the sound was soft, uninviting, lacking punch, with significant backgound noise (not just from the headphones), which was especially distracting when the music would get softer. I have heard much of the music before, and it was much more dynamic, entertaining, this recording seems too flat.
The music selection is ok, but I was hoping for some more interesting selections from the vast classical genre.
Overall, not that great of a recording, but many might not notice the difference, so if you are new to classical or aren't like an audiophile, get this album because it's a great overview of pop-culture classical, and it's pretty inexpensive.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have classical music set!.......2005-01-06

Classical music is, by far, my favorite type of music. It can make you happy or sad, it can make you laugh or cry, and it can make you want to fall asleep or get up and dance. This 6-disc set is a must-have for and classical music-lover! It has all the great composers like Handel, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bach, and Pachelbel. Some great songs include: Canon In D(Pachelbel), Morning: Peergynt(Grieg), Adagio For Strings(Barber), Cavatina(Myers), and much, much more. Every classical song you can think of is on here and the sound quality is great. So if you're looking for a good classical music CD, this set is all you need. Be prepared to be blown away!

5 out of 5 stars A magisterial concert from Neumann and Czech Philharmonic.......2007-07-22

Vaclav Neumann and the Czech Philharmonic demonstrate again here why they were one of the best combinations in Dvoark's orchestral music. This attractive collection constitutes a 72-minute CD that shows off Dvoraks's dramatic, national and bucolic natures in idiomatic and compelling performances.

Dvorak composed the Czech Suite for orchestra in D major after he had gained some fame for his Slavonic dances and rhapsodies. It was first performed in May 1879, was exceptionally well-recieved, and has been a staple of his repertoire ever since. Its five alternately delightful and playful movements are prelude, polka, minuet, romance and a brilliant finale marked "furiant". I once owned a recording where this was mated to the composer's Wind Serenade; I think it is far better placed kicking off this all-orchestral program.

Dvorak wrote the "Hussite" Overture in 1881 for the occasion a new national theater beign opened. Its Czech topic was a 15th century Christian movement that became a forerunner to the Protestant Reformation. The Hussites have been the subject of numerous Czech composers and Dvorak had previously written about them for the stage. The dramatic 13 1/2 minute overture -- built on a theme that the Hussites are warriors of God -- recalls the symphonies Nos. 7 & 8 in its range of expression and drama.

"My Home" was originally one of nine compositions about the composer's homeland. While the others have passed into obscurity, the overture on national Czech themes, which is of about half the duration of "The Hussites", continues as a mainstay in Dvorak's repertoire and is regulalry recorded. The near 9-minute Notturno in B major, written first as part of a string quartet, is constructed on few themes, is genuinely reflective in nature, and is the earliest composition (1875) on this concert.

Finally, the CD closes with a riveting performance of Dvoark's noble Scherzo Capriccioso Op. 66, a 15 minute episode the composer intended to be a lighthearted break from the drama of his previous composition, the Piano Trio in F minor Op. 65. The notes tell us this: "...but the troubled mood that pervaded Dvorak's spirit at the time eventually surfaced here...evoking expressions of resistance and acceuntuated determination." There's all that and more in this performance.

Recorded variably from 1969-82 and remastered via 24 bit resolution in 2005, the sound on these recordings is always listenable but never up to current 21st century standards. The playing and interpretation, however, is characteristically Dvorakian and rarely bettered. Anyone that's heard the late Dvoark symphonies and perhaps the string or wind serenades and wants to expand their knowledge of the composer could do much worse than acquiring this concert. I find it remarkably entertaining and always sympathetic to Dvorak's varying tunefulness, imagination, and moods.
